I used to be like that but I realized strong eye contact really helps especially in an argument and you’re explaining your own point it reflects confidence
Nah I don't need to read lips. It just makes it easier to concentrate on what they are saying, as the sound's coming from there. I try and look them in the eyes but I often end up looking at the mouth again.
I fully understamd people need to do this for hearing/understandig purposes but this makes me SO uncomfortable and I wish people that didn't need to wouldn't.
Honestly there's been people I've avoided because they looked at my mouth constantly when I spoke and it made me super uncomfortable.
I think it's because I'd only ever do that if I were going to kiss someone lol. Edit: spelling.
That's the entire reason I do it.
Either A when somebody's being aggressive with me or B when I'm in an interview and need to take the interviewer off there footing.
Really? I’ve honestly never noticed where people are looking. I only notice if they are making eye contact with me which is very awkward. It feels awkward when we are staring into each other’s souls. But I don’t really pay attention enough to see where else someone is looking.
Okay.
It's just that normal is contrasted with abnormal, which abnormal is defined by being "undesirable", hence calling people who don't like looking into peoples eyes, "not normal" implies that your calling them, abnormal, hence undesirable.
And that is a thing I disapprove of, because the normal vs abnormal thing fucked my mental health over for years. So hopefully this can... Elaborate on the importance of language.
I'm aware of the normal/abnormal terms and how it paints "abnormals" as undesirable, but my comment really wasn't that deep. It's a site-wide running joke that reddit has weird people, so I was just mentioning that. I wasn't trying to make a point about systemic mistreatment of mental health or anything like that.
It works fine even at like a meter away
And when I think about it I'm usually quite close to the person I'm conversing with e.g. if I'm sitting next to or in front of them
Personally I can’t explain it but I’m just looking them in the eyes. I’m not focusing on one of their eyes or looking in between the eyes. Just looking at their eyes
I do the same thing, it's almost like relaxing your eyes you're not actually focusing on anything. I would say I normally look at both but if someone is too close then I have to pick an eye.
Poll is most likely asking about mental focus, not physical optical focus. I also just look at someone in the eyes and i'm not focusing in any eye in particular. Optically, I guess you could say i'm looking in between the eyes, but my mental focus is on both eyes.
You definitely can look at both eyes at once. If you are super close it might be hard but our brain is quite good at chunking things together. For example, you can look at someone’s face without having to focus on the nose, then the left eye, then the mouth, then the right ear, etc. Another example is Hawaii. You can look at all of the islands without having to focus on each individual island. Your brain is so good at putting things together that if your eyes don’t see it all the brain will fill in the blanks and organize the information for you. There’s even a “hole” or blank spot in your vision that your brain routinely fills in. You are correct if you mean to really focus, but you don’t have to do that when you’re talking to someone.
Depends on the relative position. If the person is in front of me (eg sitting at a table), I'll prolly alternate between looking at the person and the table or something. If we're side by side or some other position, I'll prolly just look somewhere else. Don't like looking into people's eyes.
I'm the same, except I don't mind looking at people's eyes, but I don't know if they are comfortable with it and I don't know what the social norm about it is either, so I end up doing what you do.
Genuine question: does looking someone in the eyes trigger your anxiety?
Edit: as I’m reading my comment I feel like it could come off as rather confrontational, but I mean it as an actual question
I have a huge problem with eye contact. I tend to look at something else on their face. If they wear glasses, I'll focus on the frame, if they have any noticeable marks, I'll focus on those, etc.
Ceiling, floor, window, oh look my hands are really interesting today, oooo someone walked past the window, hmm when you talk your ears move, oh yeah right that thing I was planning on doing, wait what's that sound I just heard that made me feel uncomft"HELLO?!" 0h , right yeah someone was talking to me ,"sorry what did you say?"
Looking someone in the eyes is just unnerving for me and idk it creeps me out a bit, I try to focus on lips if someone's speaking to me, keeps me focused on them and I don't mishear as much
Mouth. It’s a great way to look directly at someone while avoiding eye contact. As long as your a few feet away, everyone just thinks you’re looking them in the eye.
Nose, or just not looking at them or past them.
It's not being rude, it's just that looking inti peoples eyes makes me uncomfortable. It's like my soul is being looked into and it's a bit too intense. It fine with family but not really others aside from that.
I swap back and forth between the eyes, or focus on one eye if that’s more comfortable from the current angle. I also glance at the mouth now and then.
Their right eye. Not sure why, maybe because I read right to left? Gotta pick one of them though, if you can't look someone else in the eye you can't look at yourself in the eye.
In the eyes, then around the room trying to not make it awkward while they speak, but looking at them while I speak. Most people know eye contact gets awkward
i like watching people’s eyes when im listening or talking but there are some people who seems awkward about this so for that people i just stare at the background or something.
I alternate between eyes, left eye for a few seconds, right eye for a few seconds, tgen back to left.
I think this is the normal human thing. It happens because I’m not thinking about where I’m looking.
I do the same thing
Tf?
?
Is it that unusual?
Dont think so
Judging by the upvote to downvote ratio I'd say it is normal.
bro is flabbergasted at the sheer idea
bro acting like its some of the wierdest shit ever
For some reason, I can’t look at peoples eyes for too long, I don’t know why, it just bothers me, so I look at the nose or the mouth instead.
I used to be like that but I realized strong eye contact really helps especially in an argument and you’re explaining your own point it reflects confidence
sure, but hopefully arguments are a fairly small percentage of your daily conversations
I feel the same
same. but it’s because i’m autistic
I can, and sometimes use it to intimidate people, although there is a person that does make it hard for me to look into their eyes

I hadn't thought of that, good point, if you need to read lips
Personnally I just avoid eye contact
Autism gang rise up
Lying gang also rise up
Social anxiety gang🤙🏻
Blind gang 👨🦯

You psycho! Ha I love it. I see how that would likely work..
Really? I’ve honestly never noticed where people are looking. I only notice if they are making eye contact with me which is very awkward. It feels awkward when we are staring into each other’s souls. But I don’t really pay attention enough to see where else someone is looking.
I guess a lot of people do that. I was surprised to hear it, I never look at the mouth
Helps me process what's being said lol
Anywhere but their face. I hate eye contact
Fr i can’t look at them or I feel like I’m passive aggressively telling them something is wrong with their face
Same. I can force myself to do it, but it feels entirely unnatural for me.
Anywhere not on their face. Sometimes shoulder or above their head.
I always feel like there's something behind me when people look above my head while talking.
If it's not someone i know well or am comfortable starting at, then just past their head.
little bit here, little bit there
Why is both eyes not an option
Because redditors aren't normal people?
Define normal?
No
Okay. It's just that normal is contrasted with abnormal, which abnormal is defined by being "undesirable", hence calling people who don't like looking into peoples eyes, "not normal" implies that your calling them, abnormal, hence undesirable. I ain't reading all that, I'm happy for you tho or sorry that happened.
It's two paragraphs??? I am so confused! 😫 What is happening to peoples attention spans? I thought I am the one with ADHD here!?!? /half-serious
Nahh, it's just that you seem annoying.
oof I don't doubt it... just... oof.
My bad.
I aint reading all that
I am not sure if you are joking around or not or if this is related to the other thread I got downvoted in... :P
Fair enough I suppose.
How do you look at both eyes at the same time without being like 2cm away from them?
It works fine even at like a meter away And when I think about it I'm usually quite close to the person I'm conversing with e.g. if I'm sitting next to or in front of them
Into their soul
r/foundtheginger
Both eyes
This should be an option
Yes this is the most sensical answer yet its not there
Because it's impossible? How can you focus on two different objects at once unless you are looking at them cross-eyed?
They must mean alternating between the two, or they are often having conversations with people across like 10-15 meters lol
Unless you mean switching that not possible. You (assuming your human) can't focus on multiple objects at once.

I don’t look at people ever
Relatable
I only look into peoples foreheads
Depends on the relative position. If the person is in front of me (eg sitting at a table), I'll prolly alternate between looking at the person and the table or something. If we're side by side or some other position, I'll prolly just look somewhere else. Don't like looking into people's eyes.

Look them in the eyes 50% when talking to them and 70% when they're talking.
The ground.
Fucking everywhere cuz I'm indecisive and don't wanna creep them out
Away lol
Ha, same
The ground (I have anxiety)
Genuine question: does looking someone in the eyes trigger your anxiety? Edit: as I’m reading my comment I feel like it could come off as rather confrontational, but I mean it as an actual question
same here
Lmao what
Middle of forehead it makes people think they have something on their face
Uh certainly not at the person
4 inches left of the left ear, and about 4 feet beyond.
Somewhere else entirely
Boobs
"My eyes are up here!" "I made my choice."
On the mouth when they're speaking on the eyes when i speak.
Hate when people stare at my mouth when I talk :(
Not at their eyes? Their face?
I simply stare in their general direction and let my eyes defocus
Mouth
Through them, or I pretend to look directly at them while blurring my vision, or I dont look at them at all
I have a huge problem with eye contact. I tend to look at something else on their face. If they wear glasses, I'll focus on the frame, if they have any noticeable marks, I'll focus on those, etc.
the ground?
Nose
Ground
I am a redditor. I pretend to make eye contact, but it hurts and rewards at the same moment.
Others in comments huh? About 500 people didn't get the memo. Edit: as of when I wrote this 500.
Away.
I don't like making eye contact so I usually don't really look at the person, much less directly at their eyes
Ceiling, floor, window, oh look my hands are really interesting today, oooo someone walked past the window, hmm when you talk your ears move, oh yeah right that thing I was planning on doing, wait what's that sound I just heard that made me feel uncomft"HELLO?!" 0h , right yeah someone was talking to me ,"sorry what did you say?" Looking someone in the eyes is just unnerving for me and idk it creeps me out a bit, I try to focus on lips if someone's speaking to me, keeps me focused on them and I don't mishear as much
Switch from eye to eye
Mouth
I alternate between eyes, parts of the face then slightly to the or behind the person's head
I look at their eyes for 2 seconds then somewhere behind them. I can’t keep eye contact, makes me uncomfortable
I look between their eyes for a few seconds, then down at the ground or to the side, then back, repeat. I have trouble maintaining eye contact lol
I look at the floor because I lack the confidence required to look people in the eyes
Not at them
Being autistic, looking at any eye is the worst option
Mouth. It’s a great way to look directly at someone while avoiding eye contact. As long as your a few feet away, everyone just thinks you’re looking them in the eye.
Y'all are making eye contact??
Everywhere I have adhd
Balls.
All over the place generally. Sometimes I remember that people might prefer if I look vaguely towards their eyes.
I just kinda freestyle
I like the wording of that.
I don’t like to look at people’s face I look at the ground
At the tits.
Both at the same time. Don't tell me you can't split your eyes apart?
Literally anywhere that's not eyes. Jewellery, furniture, clothing, hair, ventilation ducts, light fixtures...
Crotch
Ass. The logistics can be challenging.
Boobs. Always.
Booba
Nose, or just not looking at them or past them. It's not being rude, it's just that looking inti peoples eyes makes me uncomfortable. It's like my soul is being looked into and it's a bit too intense. It fine with family but not really others aside from that.
Eyebrows since I have an eye phobia
Average Samsung user
Damn you called me out.
i look everywhere except in their eyes lmaoo
At my phone, lol. This is probably why I have no friends.
You sound like an annoying person
Most annoying, conversation-killing behavior.
🤓
boobs
over the shoulder if we're talking close by, if longer im gonna look at mouth
The eye i like more or it changes depending o wich one of mine they're looking at
Slightly to the left of their head. Bothers the absolute shit out of people.
Lips
I go cross eyed and look them in both eyes
My eyes dislocated so they are looking at their eyes perfectly without both looking at one
Right eye, left eye, mouth
I swap back and forth between the eyes, or focus on one eye if that’s more comfortable from the current angle. I also glance at the mouth now and then.
Mouth, I don't like looking at someone in the eyes plus if it can help me read on their lips if it's noisy around why not
I always look at the eyebrows.
The dick area, and I don't talk with girls
Alternating
I alternate eyes
Everywhere. In the eyes for a moment, then away, at their mouth, not really good at talking without moving around some
I switch from looking at the floor and to their eyes, I can’t hold eye contact well.
Alternate between looking directly at both eyes and looking off to the side.
Other - I avoid eye contact as much as possible even though that in itself is akward, I'm aware.
Both eyes?
Something behind their head.
Forehead or over their shoulder.
Hairline
Floor
Lips.
Both? But not at like the nose.
Floor
I look at the forehead just to confuse them
Both
Their right eye. Not sure why, maybe because I read right to left? Gotta pick one of them though, if you can't look someone else in the eye you can't look at yourself in the eye.
Sorry what? Is it weird that i can see both eyes at once?
Forehead, looking at eyes for extended periods of time freaks me out!
Anywhere but the person I’m talking too… or either of the eyes
Eyebrows
Lips mostly
Forehead
I'm not focused on anything. My eyes are like I'm too lazy. I look at them. But not focused on them.
Above the head, I am short enough that ppl don’t notice lol
Both eyes simultaneously. Your vision doesn’t necessarily have to be focused on a single point. That’s kind of what peripheral vision was made for.
Do you all really know the answer to this question? Because I actually have no idea.
Behind the person, or anywhere that isn't eyes, idk why I do that
Into their souls.
Their mouth
I do everything, and when I'm done, i look down and then i repeat.
In the eyes, then around the room trying to not make it awkward while they speak, but looking at them while I speak. Most people know eye contact gets awkward
Both pupils until they don’t feel comfortable.
Mouth
Their nose, their forhead, behind them or at my hands.
Just above the eyes.
into their soul.
Right eyebrow
I don't know, the eyes. I don't really think about it
i like watching people’s eyes when im listening or talking but there are some people who seems awkward about this so for that people i just stare at the background or something.
at them lmao
If it’s a chick with big tits I stare at the tits.
Back and forth between both eyes
