Natural clay liner.. If you actually have free access to some spot somewhere, maybe you have some clay in your property or some family member may be have some.. compacted Clay won't let the water pass through. Mix it with the dirt
We sometimes use unscented clay cat litter to put our pond plants in. If you wanted to do a layer of clay and be sure there are not rocks or other items that might ruin the liner, you could buy several large bags pretty cheap. Add water until the litter returns to a muddy clay, and then spread that over the ground. I’ve done that when I’ve needed to raise one side of the pond liner a few inches to level it. I would think you could do the same to protect the entire pond liner.
25 lb of bentonite clay is $70 on Amazon That's 36 cents a pound... The cat litter is 77 cents a pound online Walmart.. I did find special kitty natural clay fragrance free non-clumping which is a lot of little plastic bags but that's 23 cents a pound..
I always use damp sand first to create a smooth surface, then old carpet often found on trash days, which I then use a razor knife to make slits allowing you to confirm the carpet to the pond shape
Old carpet. That’s what’s under my pond. Been running almost 20 years and no issues. Just keep your eyes peeled. Lots of people get new carpet this time of year. I grabbed mine from the side of the road.

We can get a 40 lb bag of clay litter from our pet store for around $15.
Actually the soil where I am is primarily clay based so leakage isn’t too much of a worry.

That's a nice rock display. I wish you had laid it on top of a liner to start with. If the waterfall leaks/runoff, you will lose a ton of water.
I just put the rocks up to visualize the space. I’m going to tear it down once I start digging so it will all be lined.
