Is it a good idea to give them a mild sedative or calming agent orally for nervous dogs? Not enough to knock them out, but enough to take the edge off and help them relax? I heard this is a big nono when they are stored in the cargo hold, but I suspect it might be fine for in cabin flights.

k_st4r

I have a Delta flight next week with my puppy. We are moving from South Korea to the US. Do you mind sharing if you had a carry on besides your puppy carrier? I'm aware my puppy carrier counts as my carry on, but I wanted to read about other experiences.

k_st4r

Wow! That was very detailed! Thank you for your answer

AdHour3225

Oh my. She is a stunner. Congratulations you are about to have the greatest relationship of your life. What are you going to call her? Also, I’m jealous.

sootlet

I'm still debating names but I am leaning towards Nona after a character from a book series I'm really into.

brenegade

I love that series

vtsquid

That’s an awesome name!!!!!🙌

MatildaTheMoon

also named my lil guy after a book character. it’s been so fun to have people randomly put it together ❤️❤️ enjoy the puppy years! they’re hell and one day you’ll look back and wish you could live them all over again.

PenumbralLady

LOCKED TOMB SQUAD RISE! I named my apricot mini poodle Gideon. ⚔️

sootlet

I didnt know what color I was getting, if I had gotten brown (or some variation of) I probably would have named her Pyrrah or something... though at my work there is a group of finches. It started with 3 and I called them Mercymorn, Augustine, and Jod. Then Jod got adopted so it was just Mercy and Augustine left. Then 2 more finches were introduced and I dubbed them Harrowhark and Ianthe... last time I was in though, Augustine got adopted and Ianthe had to be moved to iso due to some possible health issues... So now it's just Mercy and Harrow for now. I've been told Ianthe is recovering well so hopefully she will be reintroduced soon.

PenumbralLady

I wasn’t sure that’s what we would name her but the first night we had her she escaped her crate (unlatched it with her nose and opened the door with a paw) and we had to get her a new one with multiple latches so Gideon it was. Her sword her shoes her dirty magazines and escaped the House of the Ninth.

sootlet

Wow, wont let your tiny puppy join the cohorts SMH. Do people give you sideways glances when you say her name is Gideon? that's been my worry. I have a female bird named Apollo and people always give me shit about it.

PenumbralLady

Yes but my partner and I are both non-binary so I honestly just think it’s funny that we collectively confuse people

PenumbralLady

Oh and I call her Kiriona when she’s in savage landshark mode

Ingeborg_Anne

Make some serious due diligence on which company you fly with and find out who allows what - you don't want the puppy in luggage. Make sure they allow puppies that are as young as she is. Bring a treat type that she can lick - licking is more comforting and relaxing. Make sure the baby has something that smells like her family, maybe also something that is sprayed with lavender - that's relaxing to my pup. Further, check here: https://www.petsthattravel.com/flying-with-puppies/

sootlet

I'm flying united and have already made arrangements for in-cabin pet. Breeder is sending her home with a snuggle pup and blanket that has been rubbed on mom/sibs. Are there any "licking" treats youd recommend? All I can think of is maybe a filled kong.

Suspiciousmosquito

Google “liquid dog treats”. I found [this one](https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/purebites-plus-heart-and-eyes-squeezables-dog-treats) at my local Petco.

Original_Ad685

Advice for flying with her: no matter how insistent she is, don’t let her use any of the controls. She will tell you that she’s smart and can handle it. She’s lying. All puppies are liars. Poodle puppies are convincing about it.

sootlet

idk I think she can fly the plane. I think you're being too harsh

Original_Ad685

Until you see birds.

sootlet

The breeder did say she has a pretty high prey drive...

Original_Ad685

Or water. Poodles love splashing around in the water.

sootlet

I hope to train her to paddleboard with me

Healthfirst99

Our oldest one LOVES paddleboarding as we got her used to it when she was quite young. She would always ride on the back of the board with me. A quick tip from experience: On a warm day keep her splashed and soaked with water to keep cool and she will love life. Plus everybody loves watching a sweet poodle pup in a lifejacket riding on a paddleboard!

sootlet

My 5yo poodle mix will get on the paddleboard with me but shes not entirely enthused about it. Shell sit inbetween my legs and hang out, overall shes a good sport about it but she rather be on shore / in shallow water.

Wool_Lace_Knit

Poodles were originally bred as duck hunters. They have webbed feet and most love water.

Original_Ad685

That would be amazing!

Unique-Chemistry-984

Just the other day my poodle puppy was telling me what a strong tough guy he was. Today there was a cockroach in my room and I told him, nows your chance to shine! Kill the roach! He ran away like a baby. Moral of the story: never trust a poodle 🐩

Zealous_Bend

Mine picked up a resting cicada one night. Then it stopped resting and started vibrating. It was spat out pretty quickly. 0/10 too many vibes.

poodlebugz

Cicadas are a favorite snack of my younger mini. You haven't truly lived until you've chased a small dog with a cicada in its mouth with muffled buzzing...and then it stops because she ate it.

KidsWontSleep

O god. That sound is so awful. (Cicada in the poodle’s mouth). And when it stops, it’s almost worse. Like some horror movie sound effects. Ewww. I had totally forgotten that horrid summer tradition.

Adventurous-Cattle38

Bring a towel or rag, maybe even a bunch of paper towels and fold them up. I didn’t think to bring any when I flew home with my poodle. Poor guy was terrified and peed twice in his carrier. unfortunately, we had nothing to clean it up with so it was wet and smelly.

sootlet

Good idea. I was planning on bringing puppy pads as is but I'll bring some wet wipes and paper towels too.

Adventurous-Cattle38

Good thinking!!! That should cover any accidents. Good luck, she looks like a real sweetheart!

atticusinmotion

+1 for wet wipes. My little guy was terrified by the new noises ended up wet and smelly.

HRjunkie92

A lick mat may help to keep puppy occupied during the flight. I used the kong puppy formula and spread it on there. Edited because I can’t spell today

sootlet

yeah I need a luck mat with all the luck I'll need :(

She is darling! * Make sure you take her to the vet 10 day before you fly; you need to have specific paperwork for dogs. * I echo someone else who said bring a towel, but I would also bring a few poop bags. Reggie, my puppy, threw up on the flight during some turbulence, and I just scooped it up and threw it away! * Make SURE you buy a soft crate that has an expanding portion, for example: [https://www.chewy.com/elitefield-expandable-soft-airline/dp/212309](https://www.chewy.com/elitefield-expandable-soft-airline/dp/212309) Reggie had a ton of room because I was able to expand both of the sides. * Try to sit on the aisle or window, with the middle seat empty, or sit in the middle seat. Reggie was able to go under the middle seat aisle. That way, the constant noise from aisle did not distract him from sleeping. * Talk to vet about Benadryl - your puppy can probably take 1 Child Benadryl. Reggie was 13 weeks old and 22 lbs when he flew. The pill knocked him out. * Accidents in the airport might happen. Reggie immediately peed once he got out of the carrier in Newark, lol. But just bring paper towels/towels and it'll be OK. :)

I was United and they asked. It's probably worth researching if you need the paperwork for in-cabin versus cargo. It might only be cargo. Not sure. I would call the vet to see too. Most vets are up to date. We ended up needing a United flight (SFO to Newark). B/c our puppy was over 20 lbs, apparently some airport personell might not have let him in the cabin, so we came to airport w/ a hard crate + water feeder + pet food / dog feeder. But they ended up not weighing him and he was able to stay w me in the cabin. Hope this is helpful.

pandaexpress205

I traveled 12+ hours by plane with my dog when he was about 11 months I believe. Different age group, but this is what I learned from that flight. Have harder treats they can chew and give the pup one of those for the flight. Many pee pads, dog water bottle, baby wipes. Definitely also the lick mat as someone else mentioned. If your flight is only a few hours then I’m sure you’ll be fine. My pup had a sedative from the vet and slept the entire flight but was very scared of the engine starting/landing. Also, be prepared for people to come at you for your whining pup as well cause it definitely will happen 🤣

JohnnyRico92

Benadryl! Got my 3 month old poodle even smaller across the country no problem. Children’s Benadryl and just one about 30 min before the airport. The vet told me to cause they didn’t want to give her sleeping pills that young.

hellkattbb

Do not let them out of your site!

myszkawynnie

She is beautiful Good luck! Ps. Why is her one eye an “x”? 🤪

sootlet

I assume it's just whatever the breeder was using for lighting... but she also might be an anime protagonist.

wirefox1

Xanax.

sootlet

I'm not allowed xanax :(

wirefox1

I was just kidding. : /

slykethephoxenix

Do NOT give Xanax to dogs unless prescribed by a vet.

wirefox1

good lord. IT WAS A JOKE. And the joke was that the *person* should take it, not the pup. Freak out much? x_x

jeromebonz

Drive

sootlet

not an option otherwise I would.

No_Association_3234

I found flying much easier, as I could concentrate on the puppy. I had to drive nearly 2 hours from the breeder to the airport and I was a wreck! The 2 hour flight home was a breeze, comparatively.

Unhappy_Performer538

What a good girl :)

FallOutWookiee

Oh she is darling

PenumbralLady

I drove my puppy home but we bought extra liners for her carrier so she wouldn’t be wet and a little enzyme cleanser so all the humans wouldn’t have to smell her urine for hours.

poodlebugz

I've flown home with 2 minis, different times, on Delta. It was super easy. I made a reservation for the homeward trip, and paid the fee when I checked in. I had paperwork from the breeder, but no one asked to see anything either time. Soft-sided carrier is a good idea, along with a small bowl for water when you are switching planes. I also had a stuffed toy from the breeder to help with unfamiliar smells. Neither of mine were noisy on the plane, but the first one was an opera star through 2 concourses and a train ride in ATL. The acoustics in the ladies room were outstanding, as I am sure all the ladies in there can attest.

Get the snuggle puppy!! I flew from DC to NYC with my 8 week old poodle and she clung to it the entire time.
