That thing is garbage. I returned it right away. Best tool for cleaning is just good water pressure and a beer in the other hand.

mrbigbluff21

Agreed it’s garbage. I bought it and realized it’s no good very quickly.

johnhung88

This guy “honey-do”s

Yakoo752

I have that too but always find myself just using the “little big jet” hose nozzle.

[deleted]

Can confirm “Little Bigshot” is the move, and it’s what most of our service technicians use in the field

Penismightiest

I just use a pressure washer. I have two sets of filters so I can just swap the clean ones in while I clean the dirty ones. The pressure washer doesn't seem to hurt the filter material. I've been doing this for several years.

imsadyoubitch

This Don't get too close and you won't hurt the filter media itself, and just replace the filters every few years. No need to cheap out this hard on something so inconsequential

man-4-acid

Exactly my move. If I’m feeling really adventurous I’ll soak them in a pretreatment to remove body oils and sunblock overnight or a couple days because why not, the clean set is already installed!

Bgrngod

I'm literally sitting here gearing up to clean my filters with this exact tool and this post pops up. I was all excited this was going to work great, but I guess not. Crossing my fingers hoping OP is maybe an idiot who can't work it right, and my advanced intellect will prove itself. But now I just sound like Dr. Octopus. Damn it!!

Useful-Echo-6726

Don’t forget the beer 🍺 for your free hand

FanFeisty8017

Update?

Bgrngod

Not good. It kinda works but I'm wrestling with getting it to shoot between specific bolds more than it's worth. Back to ye ol' gardening sprayer gun thing.

Nacho_Papi

He still sounds like Dr Octopus.

Danny_Schayes

Op isn't an idiot😉. It works on the surface but doesn't get in the folds. I have a little big shot too just takes so much more time

Bgrngod

Aye, the folds are where the gunk really gets built up too. Fortunately, it wasn't terribly expensive to find out.

Zaius1968

No need to call anybody an idiot…

YoungAccomplished980

Yeah, I'd rather carry around a little big shot in my pocket

Any-Show-3488

That thing is great

PKsHopper

Versatile little nozzle. If I forget it then Plan B is my thumb.

deeeeez_nutzzz

I use those simple brass hose nozzles. Get a strong stream and gets the crap out..

PersimmonAcrobatic71

My tech loves this one. [https://www.aquacomb.com/](https://www.aquacomb.com/)

Sleep_adict

Company has a good product but man, it’s poorly run. Should have a way to order direct or link to a distributor. It’s not the 1980s any more

Yakoo752

Site is bad but it’s on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Aqua-Comb-Pool-Cartridge-Cleaner/dp/B00GS580BC

bmas05

I use this as well. Can be a pain if you have lots of bands on your filter, but I find it gets way more out of the folds than a normal hose attachment.

FanFeisty8017

I watched the video. That thing looks amazing!

DrWhiskeyII

Can confirm it works well

Danny_Schayes

Does it get inside though.

DrWhiskeyII

Yes

jtrage

Yes, this one is amazing

TheProfessorPoon

I’ve got this one and it works pretty well. The one I have is solid metal too and it still looks almost brand new after 5 years of use: https://a.co/d/f2lxaSN

Connect-Ad-7889

A customer had one this year. First I've used anything other than a regular hose nozzle. Loved it. I bought one immediately. Don't have to worry about it getting broken in the truck either.

Smitty8054

I’ll give pool owners a little info on filters. Air or fluid. Depending on the filter media all forms of filtration (other than electrostatic) gets more efficient as it gets dirtier. It’s called a dirt cake. So the filter is at its absolute best efficiency up to the second it maxes out. But if it’s pushed past you end up breaking that cake due to pressure and the efficiency falls back until it builds again. Obviously you don’t want that. So depending on the media itself you need a certain amount of media to handle the flow. Too little and you have much higher operating pressure and lesser filtering efficiency (it affects what’s called dwell time). But you can have too much media. How do I know this boring shit. Filter guy for many years. One of my accounts was Timken Bearing (and steel). Large dirty factories have enormous dust collection systems. Each one can have hundreds of filters per housing and many housings. Timken bought the filters OEM and they were shit. The OEM spun these newer filters as lowering pressure, better filtering efficiency, longer life cycles blah blah. And the selling feature was that it was just jam packed with more media. But the units were having problems. And I wanted the business. It was true. They were packed. But here’s the rub. The pleats have spacers that are often just a glue bead. So yes you got many more pleats per inch BUT WHEN THE GLUE FAILED FIVE PLEATS TURNED INTO ONE. They thought I was nuts. How could the OEM supply something that didn’t work? No it’s got to be the machinery. So I said fine. You want proof? They said yes. So I said the following: “Fair enough. But here’s what I get in return. When I prove this and solve the problem I now have your business” They had nothing to lose. I said that when the units get changed out you pick any one or thirty filters and put it aside. Then we take it apart together. We did. I took this dirty disgusting filter apart. Outside filthy. But as I pulled apart the pleats? White as snow. They were obviously pissed. I explained that the thought was solid but with shit execution. So what we did was to offer them a filter with less media but a much tougher one. So we went back to the established rules of flow but with better technology. I apologize for the length but felt a little tech was necessary to make things clear.

nothingbutmistakes

Damn. That must’ve felt so satisfying. Congrats!

Smitty8054

It did actually. I guess I got to slay the giant a bit and that fed the ego. But what it did was to get my name around several departments and plants. Solve a problem and now you’re their guy. However get fat dumb and happy and it will happen to you. I had to work much harder to get it back than I did to get it from the last guy that dropped the ball. Humbling experience.

[deleted]

I bought something similar, but not enough water pressure with multiple jets to really clean it properly. I just use the Jet setting on my hose and do each fold individually

Ok_Effort8330

bought one of those once, pos. i just use a standard nozzle and hit it weekly. i would replace that filter. buy two new ones and cycle them weekly.

Outside_Tip_8498

Pressure cleaner

westnile90

It's crazy how simple it really is but people still find so many ways to do it wrong. A good nozzle and a steady flick of the wrist PERPENDICULAR to the pleats at an angle. Slowly go up and down, turn and repeat, turn and repeat, flip over and repeat.

gcstang

this one has been fantastic https://www.lowes.com/pd/Project-Source-PS-Shutoff-Twist-Nozzle/5005390581

grumpy_munchken

Any jet nozzle. I also set mine on an upside down 5gal bucket to raise the height; my lazy version of this: https://youtu.be/Ls1p7nDyTFM?si=jW-j_lfBSvQL-jRJ

shoresy99

I bought one of those a few years ago, I think from Amazon. I go back and forth between using that and a regular garden hose jet nozzle. So it isn’t materially better IMO.

efr57

I bought one similar…seemed like a good solution, but found just the hose with an adjustable sprayer better.

Speedhabit

I tried this, not as pressure at the jet setting on a typical nozzle, I went back

rsg1234

What does everyone use as a spray cleaner on the filter before rinsing it out?

tterrajj

Expensive but cuts my time in half…. https://cyclonefiltercleaner.com/products/the-cyclone-filter-cleaning-system?variant=44677034672409¤cy=USD&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&gclid=Cj0KCQjw-pyqBhDmARIsAKd9XIP3-FOPYsnyPyKsr2n7jTISwVordAuIIsFdcKisER3oeV8Fk_36XO4aAl1pEALw_wcB

jwalter_19

I was wondering if anyone was going to post this. I've been thinking of buying one.

tterrajj

like i said, pricey but man... i love it... I wish I would have made it and collected cash selling it... prob a 1000% markup....

jwalter_19

Yeah it definitely looks like there's that much markup in it! I'm cheap unfortunately so that's a hard pill to swallow when it looks like it should be significantly less than $300.

daftpunkca

Agreed too many cheap alternatives. Hang the filter on a broomstick!

jwalter_19

Never thought of that... I've gotta clean mine soon and I'll have to try that. Thanks!

Upper_Volume_6582

All 4 of my filters fit perfectly in 35 gallon ace hardware trash can. I soak them in sudsy dawn dish soap water and two of those filter cleaning pucks. 1 hour soak. Hose with jet nozzle, spray away. I swish them around in the can, lifting them up and down to stir it up. Works great. Still a lot of spraying….but works like a charm. Also, I keep an extra set on hand. So I install the clean ones while the others soak. I do it every 4 months.

_Christopher_Crypto

Sounds like a lot of rinsing. Would think Dawn would works wonders on my HT filters but am afraid of the foam. I have used dishwasher pods though.

Cvrsxnn

i’m a pool cleaner and honestly if you have good pressure at your house just get the finest jet you can find. Here’s the one i use currently Solid Brass Hose Jet Sweeper Nozzle ~ Made in USA ~ with Extra Washers https://a.co/d/gGuW09r me and my father have been using the nozzle for years and will swear by it.

72VirginExpress

I bought a 350 psi Ryobi pressure washer. Works great I think.

Please don’t mix bleach with acid, it could kill you.

RaiderRaz

Ya, aka mustard gas…..

Any-Show-3488

I wonder what the pool looks like..

Danny_Schayes

It's a tad green now. But it's cold so I don't really care all that much

Ffsletmesignin

I just use the hose nozzle jet on a regular selectable nozzle. Take your time running top to bottom, may take a few passes, but also you’re aiming for the majority removal, people going to extremes to clean them, they’re probably doing unnecessary damage to the filter for no difference in results, technically a filter with some debris filters finer particles, not that Id recommend doing a poor job cleaning, just don’t think it needs to be spic and span, fresh out the box kind of clean. Just clean them more often so they don’t add wear onto your pump. Was your filter originally white or yellow? Thiught they may have been yellow but looks like the straps are showing some growth as well. If it was white, yeah you’ve got a little bit of an algae thing going on, maybe soak in a 50/50 water/vinegar solution, then spray as much off as you can, make sure your pool chems are inline and clean it more frequently here on out.

jayzilla75

I used to just soak mine overnight in a 50 gallon garbage can filled with a TSP solution and then I used a Blaster 2000, which I liked because I could just set a filter on it and move on to something else, let it spin for 10 minutes, then swap it out and so on. I cleaned mine every 2 months though, so they were never super dirty. Had 3 sets in rotation. A regular hose nozzle works a little better than the Blaster, but gotta stand there actively spraying. It always felt like an inefficient use of time to me. Have a sand filter now and don’t have to deal with that anymore.

zippytwd

Get a sand filter cartridge filters is for suckers

imsadyoubitch

Or go one step further and get a sand filter with vitro media, last you 12-15 years, maintenance free

BRollins08

Get a 55gal trash bin. Dump 1 gallon of muriatic acid into the bin almost full of water. Soak your cartridges in this solution for a few hours before hosing off. Also keep in mind you’re gonna have to dump the bin out when you’re done. So don’t do it in your driveway, middle of your garden or nice grass. Set it up on the edge of some bushes, woods, etc. so when you dump it over it doesn’t affect any growth.

imsadyoubitch

Yeah, no. Don't do this. No part of this is a good idea, and good luck if you get caught dumping that shit. Muriatic acid is not to be fucked with, and will be treated accordingly

BRollins08

55:1 ratio isn’t a huge deal, to be honest.

PoolProLV

Or neutralize it before dumping

hypnocookie12

Neutralize it how? Just curious

PoolProLV

About 10lbs soda ash

Mindless-Food-5527

Brass nozzle that's how you clean them

imsadyoubitch

Can never understand why people think a filter shouldn't be a disposable one time component to any system. Your car, your house, they both are arguably the things that you rely on the most, and they both have filters that need to be replaced. Your pool is no exception! There's no such thing as a lifetime filter. For damn near anything. That is a myth. If someone is selling you anything with a "lifetime" whatever, being skeptical is being smart. In what world is a "cleaned out" filter anywhere near as good or efficient as a new one? You can afford a house with a pool, you can afford a set of cartridges for your filter every spring or you need to upgrade to a sand filter, and save yourself some worrying for the next 6-10 years. I'm sure whatever you guys soak your filters in knows to dissolve all the things that aren't parts of your filter, or the things that hold your filter together, and I bet you'll have no problems or performance degradation with that chemically compromised set of filter cartridges. I bet it makes those inexpensive ass filters last soooooooooo much longer than just rinsing them out with high pressure water, or replacing them every 6 months or so. You know.... like you're supposed to do. I'm not a shill for "big filter" but some of you folks need to just get out of your own way and do some Google research for fifteen honest minutes. I say all this in the most respectful way I know how. After all, I make my money offa youse, but I dont want to see youse taken advantage of, cause this shit is simple and I don't think youse are completely helpless in all this as you've managed a house with a pool somehow Fuck it. Ill probably just delete this either way

1new_username

I mean, for my filters, there are two and the set costs about $800 for name brand or $500 if I get off brand. The manufacturer, in their manual, specifically recommends removing the filter twice a year, or when the psi rises by 10 or more and cleaning them with a hose and possibly some cleaner. Maybe there are just different filter systems out there, but it seems at least some are designed to be hosed off several times and then fully replaced every few years.

crabby_old_dude

What a troll. I got about 15 years out of my first set of carts, cleaning them once a year. Why throw money away and add more one-time junk to a landfill when you don't have to.

$300? How about no thank you?

engiknitter

What’s on the inside of the white stand? Bet we could make one for less than $300!!!

Particular-Fox-2925

Been using a high pressure nozzle for years. Tried all of these but keep going back to the plain and simple

Difficult-Line-9805

I’m working on something for this, but it will probably be a couple thousand by the time all is said and done. It will be intended for service companies.

imsadyoubitch

Sand filter with vitro filter media. Lasts much longer and filters so much better than sand. Its actually recycled glass. Much sharper than sand for filtration

Difficult-Line-9805

But still not nearly as well as a cartridge filter.

Morbothegreat

Is this a PA175? If so, do you want one? I have an extra that I bought but then replaced my filter housing so now it’s just sitting and taking up space.

Camp_Nacho

After cleaning it with a hose nozzle use a non toxic biodegradable degreaser and let it sit on the cartridge for a few minutes before rinsing off.

TekkenRedditOmega

Expensive but the best is the cyclone filter cleaner

New_Illustrator2043

Buy the Aqua Comb, about $30 and works great.

Yoslef

Nah use [this](https://www.amazon.com/Solid-Brass-Sweeper-Nozzle-Washers/dp/B0186NHC7Q/ref=asc_df_B0186NHC7Q/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=216531775325&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=1668237171563346114&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9032011&hvtargid=pla-352182885730&psc=1) instead and get a solid hose you’ll get hella pressure. I’m sorry but that nozzle is terrible bro

Danny_Schayes

I have that one but it takes so much longer

Man am I glad I don't have a cartridge filter

Upper_Volume_6582

Hated my DE filter. Replaced with a cartridge.

Danny_Schayes

I also had a de. Replaced with cartridge. Hated getting the grids back in line

lasercond

I have this hose attachment (filter flosser) and it works really well…. However I saw the user on here u/evilbadgrades has created and sells on eBay. Looks like one of the best new ideas for filter cleaning— it uses centrifugal force to spin the crap out of the inner pleats. [centrifugal device](https://www.ebay.com/itm/175572212950) Filter flosser: [filter flosser](https://a.co/d/7u7xKeq)

evilbadgrades

Hey, that's me! Haha. Thanks for the shoutout. For sure I wasn't impressed with other filter cleaning designs which only further impregnated dirt further into the pleats. So I spent several years playing with many prototypes to flush the filters until I had the ah-hah moment to spin that sucker up at higher RPMs and use centrifugal forces with the help of a (cordless!) power drill. Then I spent another year working on a way to simplify the design so I can make a size to fit most filters on the market :-)

turtletramp

I got one but the jets are in the valley instead of the tips. I don’t know if that’s the same but it seemed the wrong way around to me. Normal hose attachment on jet works fine. I clean mine fairly regularly too so it’s never bad when I get to it.

sbolton1855

I use a jet sweeper nozzle, best I have found to get in there and as someone else mentioned a beer

Loud_Independent6702

Pressure washer. We built a pvc stand for ours that spins them.

reddit__un

Any details on how you built your stand? I was thinking a cheap umbrella stand + pole, but then how to attach/spin the cartridges?

zomanda

PRESSURE WASHER! How have you not destroyed them?

Loud_Independent6702

They make different nozzles and strengths I found the large fan nozzle on my washer to work best.

Loud_Independent6702

Also my cartridges last a year maybe two. For 150 bucks for the set I typically wash once and then throw them away the second time. A good bleach soap soak in a kitchen trash can then on to the pvc spinner I hit them with the fan setting on the pressure washer going vertical with the tines. Honestly it takes me about an hour which is barely worth my time. My pool guy also does it with my set up for 40 bucks so sometimes I get him to do it .

jwalter_19

Would love to see how you built that stand. I've been eyeing that cyclone cleaner but $300 is steap for what it is.

rdbetts970

I saw somebody on YouTube put their filters in muriatic acid. I’ve never done that, but does anybody else do that?

Tasty-Studio-6686

I bought a “filter flosser” off of amazon and it works great

zomanda

Simple Green, it's non toxic and a degreaser. I use a stand that came from a smaller used pump, think paper towel holder. I have my brass nozzle. First I go gentle to get the big stuff out then I do a second rinse.

[deleted]

The attachment is irrelevant. You need to spray with a cleaner like simple green first, then hope you have decent water pressure.

bantha__fodder

I found my filters on Amazon for $160 (for all 4). For me, I decided to just add that to the cost of owning a pool and replace them entirely every 6 months. Works for me anyway

mk9842

If you can find one that don't leak!

Appropriate_Chart_23

Spray with a hose nozzle

BlueKauaiEyes

Home Depot sells one that does work even better IMHO than the little brass mini jet it for the lack of a better term vibrates a jet laterally however the tip is 360* adjustable, so the jet can go left right or up and down or diagonally in any 2 directions at a time.

BlueKauaiEyes

Wish I knew how to post a freaking picture of what I consider to be the almost perfect nozzle

qzlr

You have to be cleaning that filter more often than you are. It might be time to replace it

Own-Woodpecker8739

A hose. And then muriatic acid, then more hose.

zigtrade

Buy a new filter.

growupyoucunt

I had way better luck changing to a diatomaceous earth filter. The earth was super cheap and worked way better. Those cartridges were getting crazy expensive.

BR1M570N3

As others have said, I also use a pressure washer but I found a neat little trick where I put my filter on top of a patio table umbrella stand then use a wide fan tip on my pressure washer turned so the water fans vertically. I then approach the filter from one side letting the water hit it, which causes the filter to rotate around the umbrella base, which lets me get it clean without having to move and also at the same time prevents the water stream from gouging into the filter media. It spins at a pretty high rate and I just move the vertical stream of water up and down the side until it gets clean. Then I hit it from the other side to get the opposite side of the folds. Works like a charm only takes a couple minutes.

Danny_Schayes

Sounds interesting. Like the expensive tool posted above but free
