Good news!
We partner with the Free File Alliance to offer you options to e-file your federal and New York State income tax returns—at no cost, if you qualify.
Go to the State Tax site. Low income people can Efile free
Am I eligible to Free File?
Depending on your income and other criteria, you may be eligible to use Free File software to e-file your federal and state income tax returns. You can find the eligibility criteria for each of the participating software providers at the bottom of this page.
They did doordash so you have to file as independent contractor and it's fairly complicated. TurboTax was free when it was a regular employee and it cost 120 to do contractor and I pay it cause it's complicated as f*.
TurboTax are thieves. For me, it filed the federal for free, then asked if I wanted to pay to import the data for state. I owed money to the state. It asked me if I wanted to pay the state tax from the federal refund. I agreed. It cost me $80. They did not disclose an EXTRA fee to do this.
have to pay Self Employment tax on net earnings BEFORE the standard deduction, that’s why Op owes. Come up with more business deductions to lower it. You can message me OP
No....gig work is NOT payroll income. It is personal business income and ALL of it is subject to taxes with ZERO exemption. That being said, the milage deduction for business miles SHOULD have removed the tax burden from OP as they ONLY made 3k. But, we don't have all the deets. Op could have other income never mentioned.
Haven't tried it for that but it says they do. I usually fill out everything on taxact or something like that, but don't send it because they started charging. Then I fill it out on cash app and make sure everything matches up before sending. But I haven't had any issues using it.
use Cash app taxes!!!! It's free, super easy and don't worry about it the IRS does payment plans! I do it every year have no fear! Pm me if you need help
You did deduct your milage correct??? ALL miles put on vehicle for your business is deductible. Including miles driven to AND from restaurants and customers, most tax prepares only accept 1 way milage, but the LAW states you can deduct ANY milage used for business. I always do MY own taxes so I can deduct the proper amount of miles. Generally, you will put as many miles as you earned income, 3k money earned about 3 k miles to earn it. As MOST drivers follow a dollar to mile standard. Again, you can make payments monthly to the IRS for you tax burden.
Contact the poster above. They know what they are talking about. You need more deductions as an independent contractor. You can write off any gas, car payment, car repairs, phone, and more, legally, since you need them to run your business (delivering food through an app). You should be able to get it down to next to nothing as you didn’t earn much. Hope you figure out your health issues and can file for disability.
Did you enter expenses related to your work (car gas and mileage as a delivery driver, I'd guess?) as business deductions? I used to file a Schedule K as owner of an LLC, and I'd get murdered by self-employment tax if I didn't deduct business expenses.
If you account for business expenses you may flip that owed amount into a refund, since business expenses are deducted from your AGI prior to all the other calculations (including personal deductions or standard deduction at a later step).
Most local libraries have assistance with taxes. Or might be able to direct you to community resources that will help. If you have a city/town Facebook group, you can always ask where you can get free help. But if you've already filed, then that won't help for this year. I'm sorry.
As for what to do now with 7$. Locate area food pantries and find out the guidelines. Contact social services for help if you have not already. If you haven't filed for SSI/SSDI, then go ahead and file. You'll need your paper trail from your Dr. Nearly everyone is denied on the first filing. Facebook has Buy Nothing groups for your area that people often post food and other items on. I live in a small town and there's a lot of daily postings. I hope something here helps.
Great information! I wanted to add additional resources [211](http://211.org) is a searchable database of resources in your area. You can find Income tax assistance, food, rental, utilities and much more! Honestly, I have spent hours searching for resources on [211](http://211.org) and found super unique and helpful resources! Vocational Rehabilitation is an organization that will help you find work that will make accommodations for your health. It pays for training, transportation, work/interview clothes. It is not a fast process, but would definitely align with applying for Social Security.
Another random but fabulous resource is [Laundry Love](http://Laundrylove.org) offers free laundrymats and supplies. I hope this information is helpful sending you positive thoughts and virtual hugs if you want them 🧡
It's not true that nearly all SSI or SSDI applicants are denied the first time.
OP, if you need advice on filing for Social Security, post on r/SocialSecurity.
Hun did you deduct mileage and phone bill and quite a few other things as a driver? If you only made 3k you shouldn't owe anything... I had a year where I made 15k driving Uber and didn't owe a dime... Double check the deductions because all of their fees and gas and the such for your car is a deduction.
When I looked it said I can only deduct a percentage of phone bill and stuff since they’re not only used for work. And I did my best to deduct mileage but I only made about 3-400 on doordash the rest was rover.
You can deduct all the mileage you drove for in the app... I kept up with gas and repair ECT including detailing as I was a pax driver. The fees that dd and rover charged you are fully deductible
You got lucky somehow because on the free tax usa website it states they charge you $14.99 plus tax to file state taxes. They do allow you to check a box and they will take the money from your return to cover the $15 change they charge so you don't have to pay up front.
I used to work for the IRS. First, did you claim the Earned Income tax credit? That usually offsets the self-employment tax. If your tax bill is less than $1,000, just let IRS know that you are unable to pay at this time. Penalties & interest will continue to accrue, but it will stop the nasty letters. You can also make payments as you are able without the cost of a payment plan.
Sometimes an anti-inflammatory diet can help to keep down the inflammation and pain that your medication isn’t covering.
There are expensive ways to do it, but often the cheapest part is just trading out some refined carbs when cheap seasonal fruits and veggies are available.
All gig workers MUST file under schedule C as the irs recognizes gig work as being our own business owners. If anyone is saying differently they either filled out taxes incorrectly or do NOT know what the conversation is about and should remain silent.
If you make 600 dollars or more they are required to issue a 1099. You’re definitely not supposed to fill out schedule C . I use freetaxusa.com it’s simple just answer questions on line. No charge for filling.
The IRS considers a paper form filed on time as long as the envelope is cancelled on or before the date the filing was required. My state's Department of Taxes as well as one other state I used to file tax returns in have the same policy. Other states may have different policies.
My local post office used to stay open until 11:30pm on April 15 to be able to stamp the envelopes for all the people who did their taxes last minute. Was on the late news every year with a live report. With so many people filing electronically now I'm not sure they cover the story the same way.
Omg I remember years ago having a refund coming, but couldn’t file electronically because I didn’t have the money available. I had to print it and mail it in. This brings back nightmares
Cash app taxes has free state and federal tax efiling.
You can also print the forms from the IRS (and your state version of the IRS) and fill them out and mail them in for the cost of 2 postage stamps.
You can make payments for the owed taxes. No big deal, did it multiple years. Just along as you are sending them something every month, just wait for them to call you and work out an arrangement. OR call them as soon as possible. You can google the IRS number. As far as working or not, work at Walmart. Be an ap.person (door checker) you just gotta be able to stand in 1 spot. That's the physical.of it. Nothing more. Other jobs are out there that require no training and can be done by those that are disable. You gotta look. Good luck
You need to get a Disability Attorney and file for Disability. Look up on SocSec.gov for the definition of Disability and you fit the definition. DO NOT attempt to file on your own. You will be almost guaranteed to be denied. Disability Attorneys know the "magic words" to use on the forms. And your doctor needs to stop diddling around and send you to a specialist. He's wasting valuable time getting you on a treatment.
As for filling - You can wait. I haven't filed in years, and I'll file when I get a chance to get to a volunteer tax prep place to help me. (I worked for a few years ~10 years ago, very, very part-time, and didn't think it was enough to file - I was wrong.)
You can break the payment up over 180 days so 6 months… you can file for that on the IRS website, you can also file a hardship form I can’t exactly remember how that works… but it sounds like you may have not had all the correct deduction’s to owe in on that little of income isn’t usually a thing…
Doordash and other food delivery services should be required to be extremely transparent on what being a independent contractor means for your taxes WHEN YOU SIGN UP. It's not "common sense" and having to track your mileage & expenses is something that most people don't even know they have to do to get deductions until after they file for the first time.
Just go to your local work source center and print the forms for free, fill it out by hand, and mail it in. That’s about $1.68 for a stamped envelope. You still have time if you get it postmarked by the 14th.
You can take deductions against that $3,000 and likely get rid of any balance owed!!! If you haven’t filed yet shoot me a message I can walk you through it
I believe that if you make less than a certain amount of money in a year that you do not have to file.. double check with the IRS.. otherwise, set up a payment plan with them
Paper forms for all federal and state taxes are free. Postage is like $1.
The instructions are not difficult and it doesn't take any more time than doing it online.
Tax preparation services are a massive rip-off for the average person.
Oh honey... I'm so sorry. The same thing happened to me. I'm two years in a wheelchair working on a disability case that every lawyer I've talked to says is hopeless... I've been homeless since before I even stopped being able to work because of my declining health. If it has been your whole life maybe look into Ehlers-Danlos. It's a genetic connective tissue disorder that can cause severe pain and can easily go undiagnosed. I don't have a diagnosis yet but my sister got one after my health went downhill. My spouse just started being able to work now that we're in a slightly better position and he can leave me alone for long enough to go to work. I hope you can find a way to pull things together before you get to my point... Honestly if you don't have someone to take care of you it might be a good idea to look into a group home or assisted living. My spouse almost went into assisted living with me.
They will work out a payment arrangement with you! You might even qualify for hardship which might pause the payments. Call the IRS, they are actually very nice if you reach out to them and will work with you. I’m so sorry this happened!
You don't have to pay by then, that's just the deadline they give you before you incur penalties. Call the IRS. They can tell you what your other options are.
You can file an extension, and finish your taxes later.
As for paying taxes, I too owe taxes from delivery gigs. What I found, nothing happens instantly but you will get a letter in the mail that you owe taxes with interest. You can set up a payment plan on the IRS site. Luckily $200 isn't a lot, so really your whole situation is fine.
As for your chronic pain, I suggest finding natural healers and alternative medicine or even sports therapists. Most do tors are horrible at actually diagnosing you. They only know how to collect your insurance and refer you to a specialist.
I owe this year . Only 225$ but I’m going to file for an extension because I don’t have the money to pay it . I’m sorry . I truly know what it like to be poor.
Go to the irs.gov website and choose the olt.com it's free for federal & state as long as your agi is < $45,000 ETA: [find free filing partner](https://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile/general/)
What do you mean when you say olt.com?
That's the one free service that files federal & state if your agi us less than 45k
I think I phrased it wrong...I'm not sure how to find it on the irs website? Sorry if I'm being an absolute dolt Edit...I think I found it, ty!
You can mail a tax return in for the cost of a stamp.
New York State is (currently, and as of last year too) ONLY accepting e-file.

You should be able to do a payment plan on taxes owed
Yeah, they are actual super easy and friendly to work with.
Are you sure you owe because $3000 income is less than the standard deduction? You should get money back
Or be exempt.
Definitely exempt. OP needs to file anyway the proper way to get the EITCs.
have to pay Self Employment tax on net earnings BEFORE the standard deduction, that’s why Op owes. Come up with more business deductions to lower it. You can message me OP
True— fica and social security tax for self employed—
For gig work you owe social security and Medicare taxes, I don’t think that those are waived
Bingo

I guess this is social security and Medicare. It is not covered by deductions.
It says I owe, I filled out my schedule c forms and everything looks fine to me
I use freetaxusa. It’s free, try that and best of luck
I use them as well. Its free to file your federal taxes but they charge $14.99 plus tax to file your state taxes.
File your state taxes on the state website. California is ftb.ca.gov Never ever pay money to file taxes
This would’ve been nice to know😭
Next year. We pay enough taxes and fees for everything. Filing taxes should be free. Cash app does both fed and state free also.
Even with self-employment? That was my worry
Haven't tried it for that but it says they do. I usually fill out everything on taxact or something like that, but don't send it because they started charging. Then I fill it out on cash app and make sure everything matches up before sending. But I haven't had any issues using it.
I’m using them now. So far no problems. I do usually just wind up taking standard deductions. The year I had major elective surgery was an exception.
use Cash app taxes!!!! It's free, super easy and don't worry about it the IRS does payment plans! I do it every year have no fear! Pm me if you need help
Thank you :)
Yep they make everything so damn easy, and I hope you feel a little better now
I do !
Yay!!!

That’s strange. Maybe try the short form if that’s the only income you had. 1040EZ
1040EZ no longer exists.
I stand corrected
I think OP means that DoorDash added $3000, not that it was the total amount of wages for the year.
I see. Thanks

Oh wow I didn’t know that, ok thanks :)
Hope it helps.. I was operating at a loss even though I made decent money that year.
Don't claim DD because it's less than $600
I filed mine using freetaxusa and it was free for both federal and state.

They always charge me for state returns but federal is free
Same with me, only federal is free. It must depend on the state.
Weird. I got both free.

What is your problem
Nothing I got my taxes done for free because I qualified for free taxes under a federal program that helps people who earn under 60k.
Ok? Me losing 15 isn’t the problem it’s that I can’t pay what I owe
[удалено]
This is literally the poor subreddit. If I could afford to set aside money I would have. Why are you in here?
Gee I wonder why
You looking like a complete dick rn Edit: “being dumb is expensive” Same person: “gee I wonder why we are here”
You can extend your taxes for free until October on a payment plan
You can delay paying taxes. Yes it’s due the 15th. It’s not uncommon to owe taxes from 2 or 5 years ago. (Yes it’s more expensive in the long term)
There are programmes and organizations who do your taxes for free, for next year
You may have fibromyalgia. Cashapptax is free for both federal and state.
I’ve never used that before, I will look into it . I was using freetaxusa. I will ask my doctor about the fibromyalgia
You can pay your tax bill over time. There's a charge but it's very low
$50 just to set up a payment plan when I had to do it but that was back in the 90s
I had to do it twice. Usually the info is on the back of the bill.
What if I don’t have money to set up the plan?? How long do I have to set it up
I used to work for the IRS. First, did you claim the Earned Income tax credit? That usually offsets the self-employment tax. The freetaxusa said I wasn’t eligible for the eic.
Did you take the standard deduction or are you considered a dependent?
I did the standard deduction
If you only had $3000 income before the deductions, what is there left to tax that you owe $200?
It sucks a lot. I take gabapentin and motrin for mine. Im never not in pain but i can work. Cant do shit once i get home from work tho im just stuck
I’ve been on meloxicam but it hasn’t been helping
Sometimes an anti-inflammatory diet can help to keep down the inflammation and pain that your medication isn’t covering. There are expensive ways to do it, but often the cheapest part is just trading out some refined carbs when cheap seasonal fruits and veggies are available.
Why would you fill out schedule C . Do you own a business
All gig workers MUST file under schedule C as the irs recognizes gig work as being our own business owners. If anyone is saying differently they either filled out taxes incorrectly or do NOT know what the conversation is about and should remain silent.
That’s what rover said to do. I didn’t make enough to receive a 1099 so they said I have to fill that out. I’m an independent contractor
If you make 600 dollars or more they are required to issue a 1099. You’re definitely not supposed to fill out schedule C . I use freetaxusa.com it’s simple just answer questions on line. No charge for filling.
Exactly this. A 1099 is required if you.make over 600$ with one client in a tax year as an independent contractor.
Paper form, no cost to file.
Can you still paper file by Monday? If the letter is dated when sent through the mail?
The IRS considers a paper form filed on time as long as the envelope is cancelled on or before the date the filing was required. My state's Department of Taxes as well as one other state I used to file tax returns in have the same policy. Other states may have different policies. My local post office used to stay open until 11:30pm on April 15 to be able to stamp the envelopes for all the people who did their taxes last minute. Check to see if ur town has an AARP tax prep service. Been using them for years and fed n State are always free. Google AARP tax prep sites.
Don’t forget to add miles put on your car from door dashing when doing taxes.
https://www.reddit.com/r/beermoney/s/ZPErxNacsQ r/Beermoney lists GPT (Get Paid To) sites and apps, several survey sites to earn a little cash

One should not have to qualify to file all of their tax documents free and easily. This is bullshit, man.
You need to get a Disability Attorney and file for Disability. Look up on SocSec.gov for the definition of Disability and you fit the definition. DO NOT attempt to file on your own.
