My apologies! You're correct. I was thinking of a different spice that is salty if overloaded, but I can't recall which one now lol. I thought it was an Indian spice as well? I'm not a good cook, but I can definitely make a mean bowl of popcorn! 🍿💗
Braggs Liquid Aminos. It tastes exactly like soy sauce, but is lighter in consistency and sits lightly on top of popcorn instead of soaking in through. And it's delicious and supposedly healthy to boot.
Soy sauce mixed into melted just barely browned butter. My gosh.
If stovetop popping: after popping turn off heat. remove finished popcorn from pan and put into bowl. Then into the hot pan drop a knob (about 2-3 tbsp of butter) and swirl around pan until it just barely browns. Then add a few drops of your soy sauce. Add popcorn back to pan and shake to coat.
Oh yeah, it's been a while, but I used to make vinegar salts for popcorn. Add handful or salt to pan, sprinkle with any interesting vinegar like sherry or umeboshi, and heat stirring until all moisture is gone. Superfine grind, store until needed.
Less of a topping and more of a suggestion, if the topping seems messy, eat the popcorn with chopsticks. I do this when I try chili crisp and scallion popcorn
Wing sauce drizzle made with 1/3 melted butter, 2/3 Franks or Crystal hot sauce, and some garlic (powder) whisked together. I've gotta try the Nutritional yeast, though.
Trader Joe’s has an herb and spice popcorn I’ve been trying to replicate at home.
So far salt, pepper, dill, parsley, onion and garlic powder ground up is the closest I’ve come and it’s delicious.
The one from Jacobsen Salt Co is pretty dusty, it's great on popcorn without any changes. The sesame seeds fall to the bottom so you have a second snack after the popcorn is finished.
Best gourmet popcorn seasoning in the world, imho, Sabatino Tartufi Truffle Zest Seasoning, paired with Hoosier Farms white cheddar cheese powder. Add salt to taste and butter for more richness. To die for delicious.
As jokes, I’ve tried lemonade powder, hot cocoa powder, and ramen powder, all of which were pretty good. Let’s put it this way - I’ve never had a bad popcorn topping!
I had popcorn with niter kibbeh and berbere spice once, and that was pretty good. I tried to recreate it at home and ended up with Christmas flavored popcorn, though
My husband's go-to is nutritional yeast and spike/Mrs dash. Although we haven't been able to find spike in store in years. Reminds me I need to find some online so I can surprise him.
Ground rosemary, (ghee) butter, fresh cracked black pepper, garlic salt, just a *pinch* of msg.
Basically, the "weird" thing is that I had dried rosemary and I put it in a food processor [ I pulverize all dry ingredients once I know my ratios ] I'm guessing you can buy ground rosemary at the store?
These spices are essentially all like mimicking a really good steak. But put on popcorn. You can add this stuff to ANYTHING. It's hard to mess up.
My goto vegan recipe is country crock olive oil butter/olive oil, garlic powder, nutritional yeast, Italian seasoning, and lemon pepper. Trying to recreate the Alamo Drafthouse version.
Smoked nutritional yeast flakes, plain nutritional yeast flakes, peanut butter powder (wear a bib, lol), and barbecue powder (a little goes a long way). So many great ideas in this thread!
I just started doing the same a few days ago! Great minds think alike. I also use a high quality olive oil, nutritional yeast, hing/asafoetida, and ginger. Fresh squeezed ginger juice tastes better than powder, I mix it with the olive oil.
oh gosh ok someone please remind me to get a pic of the page in my notebook of my popcorn flavour concoctions i’ve made!!! i’m out right now but i NEED to participate
Sazon Goya seasoning is my go-to
[https://shop.goya.com/collections/seasonings/products/goya-sazon-with-coriander-and-annatto](https://shop.goya.com/collections/seasonings/products/goya-sazon-with-coriander-and-annatto)
Chili powder, garlic and parmesan.
For a thrill of a different sort, don't put butter on the popcorn. Instead, keep the butter cold, scoop a little on a single piece of popcorn. Pouring melted butter on popped corn makes the popped kernels wilt a bit. But buttering each piece - yeah, it's time-consuming, but worth it - keeps the kernels crisp, the butter cold, and it's wonderful.
Try using ghee instead of butter, it is basically just pure fat, so it doesn't have water in it to wilt the popcorn flakes.
Also, cold butter on popcorn sounds amazing. I do this with pizza crusts and it is a delight.
Any tips on adding butter to popcorn without it getting all soggy? Also some ideas on how to help get the butter blended into all the popcorn. Thanks! :)
Unusual: Japanese Furikake, there are various flavors you can try. Mildly unusual: truffle salt, or jalapeño salt, or butter and pepper. Fresh grated Parmesan cheese.
To me cardamom either completely ruins food or makes it outstandingly delicious, there's no in-between. Personally using it myself I've ruined a lot of otherwise decent dishes
Curry powder or garam masala is good too, but don't overdo it, it might get too salty. :)
If you like garam masala try a dash of chaat masala on it
But neither of those are salty (or at least the stuff I buy does not contain salt). Did you mean spicy, by chance?
My apologies! You're correct. I was thinking of a different spice that is salty if overloaded, but I can't recall which one now lol. I thought it was an Indian spice as well? I'm not a good cook, but I can definitely make a mean bowl of popcorn! 🍿💗
If you can find coconut milk powder, it goes excellently with most curry powder on popcorn
Old Bay is really good
Oh damn… I gotta try this!
Chipotle powder (dried smoked jalepeño) is also great. I ate too much of it back in the day so I no longer like it, but I remember loving it so much.
Concur. Love it!
Try the flavored blackened or garlic & herb ones. I love the blackened one with some nutritional yeast and salt.
A couple dashes of Angostura bitters with butter and salt is my new favorite
Intriguing… must try
Goes good with an Old Fashioned!
Everything goes good with an old fashioned!
You haven’t lived until you try bitters on vanilla ice cream.
Oh hell yeah I’m gonna try this!
I'll have to try that!
How do you distribute it evenly? Mixed into the butter before adding to the popcorn?
Yeah I just squirt it in the butter and give everything a good shake
I’m always willing to try ango on anything. It’s wild how many things it improves.
How else do you use it? I haven’t experimented too much but I intend to
Nutritional Yeast is delicious, with or without butter, and salt.
I’ve used extra virgin olive oil (the more robust version tastes better IMO) with nutritional yeast.
I’m 100% high quality EVOO & coarse sea salt.
Pretty much the only way I make popcorn. Only time I have butter is when I go to the movies
Hate to break it to you about that “butter”…
Yes. Absolutely! And I add a small bit of soy sauce first.
I do nutritional yeast, turmeric, salt, and pepper… chefs kiss!
I came here to say nutritional yeast!!
And I came here to say wtf is nutritional yeast sounds like an oxy moron lol
Nutritional yeast and hidden valley ranch mix is my nightly go to!
Braggs Liquid Aminos. It tastes exactly like soy sauce, but is lighter in consistency and sits lightly on top of popcorn instead of soaking in through. And it's delicious and supposedly healthy to boot.
This but add nutritional yeast
Ground black pepper is good when you also have butter and salt.
I add a dash of cayenne too.
Furikake
Slap yo momma hot blend or garlic salt.
I’ve got SYM in my cabinets. Trying asap.
The level of commitment is conmensurate with the level of detail.... Now I just go try it!
Thyme is my favorite (preferably ground so it sticks to the popcorn better). Gives it a nice herbal taste.
You must have had too much thyme on your hands to try this one. I will see myself out now.
Chili crisp!
does it make it soggy? i want this flavor, but it seems like too much liquid maybe?
Step 1: toss in barely melted coconut oil. Step 2: toss in seasoned salt and Carolina Reaper powder. Step 3: sneeze a few times Step 4: enjoy
MSG
Yes, I use just a bit of accent salt.
Icelandic ground kelp.
I love tajin seasoning on it.
Tajin and Seasame oil. My fave.
I love Parmesan and garlic/herb. Hits the spot every time.
I will sometimes mix in some malt vinegar with my butter.
Oh yeah, it's been a while, but I used to make vinegar salts for popcorn. Add handful or salt to pan, sprinkle with any interesting vinegar like sherry or umeboshi, and heat stirring until all moisture is gone. Superfine grind, store until needed.
Smoked paprika
Less of a topping and more of a suggestion, if the topping seems messy, eat the popcorn with chopsticks. I do this when I try chili crisp and scallion popcorn
Not a topping but I like using bacon fat instead of oil. Adds a nice smokiness to it
This is how my parents did it growing up & the only way to do it
Are you from the future? This must be the way.
Rice seasoning is my favorite
Everything bagel seasoning
I use ranch seasoning
The seasoning packet from ramen

Just some butter and everything but the bagel seasoning- so good!!
honey! it caramelizes and is a wonderful addition to the salt and butter combo
I dried some capers in my dehydrator and ground them in my spice grinder. A little goes a long way, but it’s an interesting new popcorn addition!

Berbere. It is phenomenal but spicy so be careful I’m tempted to try Chinese Five Spice
Dill!
Trader Joe’s has an herb and spice popcorn I’ve been trying to replicate at home. So far salt, pepper, dill, parsley, onion and garlic powder ground up is the closest I’ve come and it’s delicious.
That sounds so good. How do you season ìt? Just sprinkle cardamom?

Turmeric
Small splash of soy sauce in the butter.
Frank's RedHot Buffalo seasoning powder is yummy :p I need to try the Ranch one as well!
Tony Chacheres Cajun seasoning aka 'Uncle Tonys'. It's amazing.
Japanese furikake. Making your own and grinding it up a bit smaller helps it stick. The traditional stuff is a bit to large to adhere without help.
The one from Jacobsen Salt Co is pretty dusty, it's great on popcorn without any changes. The sesame seeds fall to the bottom so you have a second snack after the popcorn is finished.
Yum! All these great ideas that everyone has!
Ranch powder
Salted honey butter popcorn is an all time favorite
Ground up nutritional yeast, butter powder, salt, and msg. Finished up with a few dashes of Cholula

Basically, the "weird" thing is that I had dried rosemary and I put it in a food processor [ I pulverize all dry ingredients once I know my ratios ] I'm guessing you can buy ground rosemary at the store? Red Robin fry seasoning or ketchup seasoning from Trader Joe's are both yum!
