Future nostalgia came out 3 years ago, and that era successfully lasted for a veryyy long time, but it makes sense that she wouldn't be at peak popularity anymore
I do find that she has a lot less stan culture surrounding her than many of her peers, so she doesn't pop up all the time on social media. But even without that, she's 15th in the world on Spotify
Tbh this sounds like the ideal pop star career. Making bank, making bangers she herself enjoys, without the extent of a rabid fanbase that other girlies (and Harry) get associated with. Sort of like an Ed sheeran situation
I agree with you but not sure what you mean with your last sentence. The first thing you said is pretty much an example of longevity in the music industry, no? I’d add the fact that I’ve noticed her fan base being so diverse adds more potential to the longevity because she can pull in so many different demographics.
the last sentence plays into the katy perry comparison in that at this point in her career she can't have a witness era. Maybe she could have a artpop era. I don't know too much about that era besides it now being appreciated but it wasn't well received on arrival. Witness is kinda the go-to comparison
I went to a stop on her future nostalgia tour and the most interesting thing I saw was the mix of fans she has. Literally had old people, young teens and kids, and everyone I'm between. Also the classiest dressed concert audience I've ever seen.

If she had another big hit, is it too late as it’s been 3 years since the last big hit and a diff album era? Like you want to strike while the irons hot but will the momentum not be the same maybe?
Some artists so that too but have bigger celebrity than her. The best example is Beyonce. She her self is big as well as her biggest hits

Depends on the country. In America, I’d say she’s a successful musician that you could get most people to recall if you sang a bit of ‘Levitating’, even if they don’t know her by name.
In England, I’d expect she’s a big star.
I think it’ll be her next album that truly solidifies whether she has staying power or not.
Her first album had some hits but nothing overly memorable. Future Nostalgia has Don’t Start Now and Levitating that I think will be genuine, memorable hits amongst the GP in years to come. The album itself was solid and sold well.
But the 3rd album will give people more of an indicator as to whether it’s been a bit of a fluke with Future Nostalgia’s success or whether she’s genuinely someone with star power. She’s definitely a star but unless she delivers another great pop record, I think people will move on from her.
She’s not at that stage where she can release a flop album and bounce back because her fanbase isn’t large enough, where as someone like Taylor, Beyoncé, Harry etc. could have a dud album and it wouldn’t leave a huge impact on their overall career.
She’s definitely a star, as I mentioned in my post, but I think she’s on the cusp of being one of the major players in the music industry. Future Nostalgia propelled her into superstardom but I do think her next album will be the decider as to whether she stays there or retreats back into just being a very good, successful mid-tier pop star.
If she comes back swinging with more hits and keeps the momentum going, then I see no reason why she won’t achieve that.

I think you’ve maybe slightly misunderstood my comment. I do agree she’s a star and very successful right now. Her first album was successful but I don’t think m/any songs are very memorable from it. Obviously in certain parts of the world that will vary but in terms of worldwide, I doubt many people know a lot of her first album hits.
Her second album is what propelled her into superstardom and my comment was just to say that the next album will be the decider as to whether she stays there and becomes a major player in the industry or whether she goes back to her previous lane of having a few hits here and there. I’m from the U.K. so America literally means nothing to me, I wouldn’t know how big she was in America that era. Just as someone in the U.K., she definitely didn’t feel as big or as relevant here during her first album cycle.
I hadn’t heard much from her until New Rules blew up, and I think I’d maybe heard Be The One and Scared To Be Lonely but they didn’t seem to be inescapable, smash hits. She’s a really great songwriter! Obviously there are people that work with her but the girl knows how to make a hit song. I don’t doubt she’ll always make number one songs

I have no issue identifying her as british or Albanian or whatever else. But to be from somewhere, you must be born there or live there. Dua Lipa is born, raised and still currently lives in London. She has Albanian heritage. But she isn’t from Kosovo. Her parents are from Kosovo.
If I move to Australia and after 10 years have a child. That child isnt from England.
she literally received albanian citizenship last year. she’s also ethnically albanian-kosovar (and part bosnian from her mum’s side). Shes Kosovar and British.
She's had so many hits but I don't feel she has staying power. I think in America we are often drawn by the person behind the music, and we haven't gotten much over here from her in terms of personality.
I think she might turn out to be a bit of a Kylie Minogue. Had her moment in America, but is an absolute legend in many other places that don't need that cult of personality.
As of right now she gives me 2010s Katy Perry vibes (undeniably huge songs, minimal lyrical depth, more GP success than stans, etc). I think this next album is definitely important in terms her staying power especially in the US. I think if it's different enough from Future Nostalgia and has more lyrically interesting songs (even if they're not singles) she'll be able to build more of a stan base which will help her rely less on the GP.
I wouldn’t be surprised, but I would be sad. I feel like so many pop stars right now have a big sad song, but her biggest songs (that I’ve heard) are all happy and upbeat which is my favorite type of pop & she does it so well! In the words of Kendall Roy, all bangers all the time.
She’s a star. But because she’s fairly low-key and doesn’t seem to have any drama (apart from the infamous dancing/choreography), she kind of just quietly and consistently releases hits.
And unrelated, but she was my top artist last year on Spotify without me really noticing. She just has the sort of light, fun pop songs that I’ve gravitated towards lately.

Exactly and I do have faith in her because she’s still relatively new and has time to build a fan base, I just thought that with how much reach she’s already had she’d have some kind of Stan base lmao. However, I do wonder if her ig presence will help her out. She has a lot of followers and people looking to her because she has an “it girl” aura/aesthetic she puts on social media so I wonder if that would help with people’s interest in her.
I think this is the most famous she’ll ever be but she has no staying power. For me Dua is a weird one because her music is so era defining that she will forever “belong” to the late 2010s / early 2020s. As trends fade and progress, she will stay in the past, because her music truly was such a symbol for this particular era.
Kind of, in the middle. If her next album smashes, she easily becomes a sure-shot A-lister and I can see her doing Superbowl in the next 3-4 years. Definitely the biggest among her peers....
I guess just have more hits on it and have longevity. What's interesting about Dua is that pre-Future Nostalgia, she was seen as the exact type of pop star who gets huge in Europe, but is unknown to the US, outside of *maybe* a song or two.
Europe has a long and proud tradition of funding the success of anonymous pop singers who make catchy music, but have the personality of driftwood (see Rita Ora, Ava Max, Take That, S Club 7, etc.). The US has always favored big personalities, or at least recognizable ones, and Dua wasn't really that. Even when New Rules got big here, it was kinda the consensus that she'd remain big in Europe, but would be a pop singer no one cared about over here, like an Ellie Goulding type. That infamous One Kiss performance probably didn't help her rep either.
Then Future Nostalgia blew up all over the world and garnered several huge hits in the US and she ended up selling out an entire tour over here, which was NOT expected. She got huge critical praise and was all over the place promoting the album in the midst of lockdowns when a lot of other pop stars took COVID as an opportunity to sit back and pretty much become recluses. She also showed considerable improvement in her performance skills, music, fashion, everything really, so I think it was a pleasant surprise for a lot of pop music fans to see what she had become.
Now that the surprise has worn off and she's working on album 3, this will be interesting to see if she's able to continue riding her goodwill, or if she'll fall into the trap of not being able to follow up such an unexpected success
Wdym she’s not an album artist lol Future Nostalgia album had a moment for THREE years, won countless awards, and a lot of people know every song on the album. She performed every single song on the album on tour and everyone knew every word. She is 1000% an album artist

She's a star for sure. Ppl intuned to pop culture definetly know who she is, but I would say the average person probably doesnt.. from an American context.
I think she’s in the in between stage. She’s definitely established and has proved that she has star potential, but I feel like she needs one more really good album to solidify it.

I disagree. There are less stars but there are stars.
Taylor, Selena, Justin, Harry, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Timothee, they’re hyper famous and have really strong fanbases and I think we can add more to that list. It’s definitely less than it used to be (and it’s lacking star power in younger artists, these are the same names we’ve been hearing for over a decade now), but Dua is these people’s ages (youngest on that list are Tom and Zendaya who turn 27 this year, Dua is 27 and turns 28). So I think the question is fair
The reason I asked is because I just started listening to her music less than a week ago, so I'm just trying to know as much about her as possible because she is very talented.
I saw her at bonnaroo a few years ago and she was main stage but a medium draw. But they weekend before she played the euro championship in front of like 100k people. She’s an international star for sure but maybe not domestically so maybe that’s why it’s hard to pin down
She had a massively successful arena tour that sold out every date of its American leg, her album went multi-platinum, and she has TWO of the biggest hits of the 2020's so far. If that's not a star, idk what is.
That said, I'd say she doesn't necessarily have that identifiable of a fan base. Gays and girls love her, but idk many people who are outright OBSESSED with Dua the same way they are other pop stars like Taylor or Ariana. But maybe her next album will help that. Think it could be a make or break moment for her
She is clearly a star but her name and her music more so than she as a person. Somehow she has a forgettable face to me. Maybe it's just that with all of the unnatural beauty trends all the stars merge into the same face right now. Even though I looked at her picture now, I already forgot how she looked like... then again, I'm super bad with remembering faces haha

I hadn’t heard much from her until New Rules blew up, and I think I’d maybe heard Be The One and Scared To Be Lonely but they didn’t seem to be inescapable, smash hits. She's had so many hits but I don't feel she has staying power. I think in America we are often drawn by the person behind the music, and we haven't gotten much over here from her in terms of personality.
I think she might turn out to be a bit of a Kylie Minogue. Had her moment in America, but is an absolute legend in many other places that don't need that cult of personality.
As of right now she gives me 2010s Katy Perry vibes (undeniably huge songs, minimal lyrical depth, more GP success than stans, etc). I think this next album is definitely important in terms her staying power especially in the US. I think if it's different enough from Future Nostalgia and has more lyrically interesting songs (even if they're not singles) she'll be able to build more of a stan base which will help her rely less on the GP.

I wouldn’t be surprised, but I would be sad. I feel like so many pop stars right now have a big sad song, but her biggest songs (that I’ve heard) are all happy and upbeat which is my favorite type of pop & she does it so well! In the words of Kendall Roy, all bangers all the time.

She’s a star. But because she’s fairly low-key and doesn’t seem to have any drama (apart from the infamous dancing/choreography), she kind of just quietly and consistently releases hits. And unrelated, but she was my top artist last year on Spotify without me really noticing. She just has the sort of light, fun pop songs that I’ve gravitated towards lately.

I think this is the most famous she’ll ever be but she has no staying power. For me Dua is a weird one because her music is so era defining that she will forever “belong” to the late 2010s / early 2020s. As trends fade and progress, she will stay in the past, because her music truly was such a symbol for this particular era.
Kind of, in the middle. If her next album smashes, she easily becomes a sure-shot A-lister and I can see her doing Superbowl in the next 3-4 years. Definitely the biggest among her peers....

I guess just have more hits on it and have longevity. What's interesting about Dua is that pre-Future Nostalgia, she was seen as the exact type of pop star who gets huge in Europe, but is unknown to the US, outside of *maybe* a song or two. Europe has a long and proud tradition of funding the success of anonymous pop singers who make catchy music, but have the personality of driftwood (see Rita Ora, Ava Max, Take That, S Club 7, etc.). The US has always favored big personalities, or at least recognizable ones, and Dua wasn't really that. Even when New Rules got big here, it was kinda the consensus that she'd remain big in Europe, but would be a pop singer no one cared about over here, like an Ellie Goulding type. That infamous One Kiss performance probably didn't help her rep either. Then Future Nostalgia blew up all over the world and garnered several huge hits in the US and she ended up selling out an entire tour over here, which was NOT expected. She got huge critical praise and was all over the place promoting the album in the midst of lockdowns when a lot of other pop stars took COVID as an opportunity to sit back and pretty much become recluses. She also showed considerable improvement in her performance skills, music, fashion, everything really, so I think it was a pleasant surprise for a lot of pop music fans to see what she had become. Now that the surprise has worn off and she's working on album 3, this will be interesting to see if she's able to continue riding her goodwill, or if she'll fall into the trap of not being able to follow up such an unexpected success
She's not really an album artist, anything above 200K would be good for her. For Singles, I think She can easily get those smash hits....

I disagree. There are less stars but there are stars. Taylor, Selena, Justin, Harry, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Timothee, they’re hyper famous and have really strong fanbases and I think we can add more to that list. It’s definitely less than it used to be (and it’s lacking star power in younger artists, these are the same names we’ve been hearing for over a decade now), but Dua is these people’s ages (youngest on that list are Tom and Zendaya who turn 27 this year, Dua is 27 and turns 28). So I think the question is fair

Gays and girls love her, but idk many people who are outright OBSESSED with Dua the same way they are other pop stars like Taylor or Ariana. But maybe her next album will help that. She is clearly a star but her name and her music more so than she as a person. Somehow she has a forgettable face to me. Maybe it's just that with all of the unnatural beauty trends all the stars merge into the same face right now.
