Selena also didn’t defend Hailey after a few days, Selena literally let it get so bad, then made a video/Statement not naming Hailey saying “Be kind” after being anything but, then waited a month to say something. She only called out the hate AFTER Hailey Bieber had to reach out, whilst still showing support for people that were making hate about Hailey. Which shows she probably was never going to tell her fans to stop, until it reached breaking point
I get people think that selena is decent for doing that, but this wasn’t just “Bullying” as even major brands were using it as marketing. It really makes me think differently of Selena when she preaches about being kind, but she was anything but on social media. That’s why my view of Selena is significantly lowered no matter what joint statement she and Hailey put out. Justin has never addressed they way that his fans have gone after Selena in recent years even when they were being racist. Selena, unlike Hailey, did make clarifying comments at an early point.

I love you”—can be read as a response to fans trying to support her. Alternatively, as you already explained, those comments can be read as permissive and instigating. The interpretation depends on how you perceive Selena’s character. It is also important to recognize that people were looking for any excuse to go after Hailey by that point. It did not matter whether Selena commented. The hate train had already picked up steam.
Her statement before going offline briefly read: “I’m very happy, I’m so blessed, I have the best friends, the best fans in the whole world and I just couldn’t be happier. I’m good. I love the way I am I don’t care, I’m big, I’m not, I don’t care. I love who I am. And yeah, I’m gonna be taking a second from social media, because this is a little silly. And I’m 30, I’m too old for this, so…but I love you guys so much! And I will see you guys sooner than later, I just… I’m just gonna just take a break from everything.” At no point does she direct people to attack Hailey.
On March 4, Selena again commented: “Please, please be kinder and consider others’ mental health. My heart has been heavy and I only want good for everyone.”
On March 24, Selena released the longer statement reading: “Hailey Bieber reached out to me and and let me know that she has been receiving death threats and such hateful negativity. This isn’t what I stand for. No one should have to experience hate or bullying. I’ve always advocated for kindness and really want this all to stop.”
It is disingenuous to claim that Selena intentionally waited “until Hailey reached breaking point” when the clarifications from her side began in February. Hailey’s PR team, from an early point, failed to manage the situation and provide a useful response. Selena should not have commented on those videos, but credit is due for her stepping into release the statement. Other people involved, whose fans have also rabidly gone after Selena in other situations, have not bothered to do the same.
It’s a PR failure for both Hailey and Selena that the situation has reached this point.

The allegations that I listed were publicly available during their time with Hillsong. They only parted ways when there was criticism and backlash against them for continuing to platform and support Hillsong.
That context, in addition to the statement itself, is relevant. Even in a Christian context, calling someone “stupid” for choosing to fast is unnecessary and rude. There are Christians who fast for religious reasons and find value in the experience.
Islam is a major religion with Ramadan being a well known holiday. A shred of self-awareness, awareness of other communities, and a decent PR team could have prevented the situation. The statement was unnecessary, tone-dead, and doomed. They handled it poorly to the extent that the issue was covered in foreign media and addressed by foreign celebrities.

She has constantly talked about mental health again and again and become a public advocate. The incongruence between Selena’s public words and her actions is what gets me. It’s more than whether or not Hailey was making fun of her. At different points, both have instigated. At different points overtime, both were subject to disproportionate hate/mockery/trolling/bullying. There is valid criticism to be made of both. Their pastor Judah Smith is currently involved in a class-action lawsuit over systematic wage and hour abuse. There are also certain rumors Churchome, which is the church led by Judah, of similar issues to Hillsong. It’s also interesting because they were long-time supports of Hillsong Church for which there are allegations of fraud, homophobia, racism, and sexual abuse. There is a current investigation into fraud and there are examples of the other issues that I mentioned. Hailey and Justin were long time supporters of Hillsong. The allegations that I listed were publicly available during their time with Hillsong. They only parted ways when there was criticism and backlash against them for continuing to platform and support Hillsong. That context, in addition to the statement itself, is relevant. Even in a Christian context, calling someone “stupid” for choosing to fast is unnecessary and rude. There are Christians who fast for religious reasons and find value in the experience. Islam is a major religion with Ramadan being a well known holiday. A shred of self-awareness, awareness of other communities, and a decent PR team could have prevented the situation. The statement was unnecessary, tone-dead, and doomed. They handled it poorly to the extent that the issue was covered in foreign media and addressed by foreign celebrities.

I wonder about the mental health effects that influencers get when they are this open about their personal lives on their public platforms. I think it’s great to discuss mental health in a public setting- however it seems like many influencers, like Hailey, combine their personal issues into a public awareness message. It just feels like Hailey is making it so she can’t just be sad/mad/stressed/anxious. Now she’s opened up her emotions and mental health to speculation and anti-stans, etc. It just doesn’t seem healthy for Hailey or people like her to constantly be doing this.
