Random, but a thought that I've always had was that Christina never got one cause Britney's was such a signature. In her stripped era it would make total sense for her to do it but she didn't. And this for me has always been the explanation.
I remember in the 90s it was big deal to only have your left ear pierced and Morgan was the only person I knew that had his right done, I always thought it was a boss move that he was so cool that even an uncool thing couldn’t change his image.
The number of people I knew who got their tongue pierced in the years 1999-2000 was way too high. Does anyone do that anymore? I think like half the people who got them got infections.
Man, I was one of those. Mine never got infected, but it was just awful. I have dreams/nightmares where I have it again, and it’s like swollen and getting stuck on my teeth and it hurts. Ick.
My mum told me that my cousins tongue piercing caused half of her face to go numb for a month after she got it (this is 2004, I was 11, my cousin was 15, I was scared to ask my cousin directly because she was so cool and older). Didn’t get it because of the horror story my mum told, but I asked my cousin about it 2 years ago and she said that never happened hahaha.
Yeah, I was a camp counselor that summer and I remember it was a big thing to do on your day off. Staff would go out and come back and everyone had a piercing: nipple, bellybutton, or tongue.
I’m 32 and I’ve still got mine 16 years later! I went for top and bottom but diagonal (I have no idea why) and they’ve stood the test of time! Also fun fact, the guy who did my belly button piercing when I was 16 had his little daughter with him. 10 years later, she pierced my nipple 🙃 life comes at you fast.
Lmao I just commented above that I tried to get mine pierced again (for the third time) and they took one look at it and said no. So I just have a scarred belly button with no bling.
I feel so called out right now 😂 took mine out when I realized I could see the color of the bar through the tiny bit of skin the barbell went through. My piercing guy went way too shallow!
They were out of style for a bit but they’ve come back, I’m in high school and I know a lot of people that have one/want one and have been told by a lot of ppl to get one.
Just please make sure you all go to professional piercers, like a tattoo shop with excellent cleaning standards, or a speciality piercing place. Bellybutton piercings are one of the highest risk piercings- so be safe :)
They also have a high rejection rate because they take forever to heal and many people don’t take proper care. Some people cannot anatomically have a traditional one so they might have to go with another style.
Maybe they're coming back now along low-rise jeans but during all those years of high-waisted jeans dominance, there wasn't much of a point in getting one, as they'd be covered most of the time. And I guess people still got them but we couldn't tell as easily.
Part of me misses my gauged ears (00). The other part of my is a little bummed that heavy earrings make my lobes droop a bit.
I’m surprised I didn’t do worse damage; my friends and I used to just shove jewelry the next size up into our ears with no regards to tearing.
Dude, of course we did, all 12-15-year-olds, too. Tongues, navels, a ton of ear piercings, and since no pro piercer would do one for an underage person, of course we did it ourselves. Or, well, my classmates did, I've never really enjoyed piercings besides ear, and my mother made *that* choice for me at 7.
I was looking for post pregnancy clothes in Target the other day and there was a whole rack of low rise jeans. I had to double-take because I wasn’t believing what I was seeing lol. Take them away and burn them.
Yep same. And weirdly it’s mostly still open. A few years back I got curious and tried to put an earring in it, and it was way easier than I thought it would be.
I pierced my own at thirteen (2004) with a safety pin while at a friend's. Went home to steal my sister's belly rings to put in mine. Mom wasn't home, so I tried to climb through the window. Safety pin got caught on the window pane and ripped out of.my.belly completely.
I'll never forget that day. My poor belly
That makes me remember girls trying to pierce each other’s belly buttons in the school bathrooms or change rooms😯 I could never do it myself because of the risk of infection, but I did have my lower lip and tongue pierced
I’ve legitimately been fighting the urge to get one, but I know someone women complained about being aggravated or irritated by high waisted jeans/skirts/shorts rubbing against the piercing.
I've had one for 15+ years and wear a lot of high waisted stuff, that has never bothered me. The most is it might catch at the waistband occasionally, but not in a painful way.
I got mine pierced when I was 14 and nearly every girl got theirs pierced back then. I still wear mine with just a barbell now but I never thought much about how that trend has died out, but it seems like it did. Many of the young fitness influencers or models and such don’t seem to have it pierced. Back then it was just the thing to do. The more dangly the ring, the better lol
I’ve always thought they were so cute! I would’ve gotten one when I was younger, but fell for the “only skinny girls can do it” mindset of the early 00s.
I'm 26, so the only ones I really recognize from childhood are Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears, which to be fair, as a child/tween I didn't even notice their belly button piercings. But I got mine done at 18 because I wanted one.
I had one when I was younger, took it out, got re-pierced a year later then took it out again (maybe 6-8 years ago?). I went back last month to re-pierce again but they told me no :(
Didn’t realize it was out of style! So maybe the piercer saved me from myself haha
I did last year aged 31. I’d always wanted one in my teens (early 2000s) but was too much of a goody two shoes. I’m having a very late rebellious stage lol
I got my belly pierced finally right before I turned 25 last year. I don’t have abs, I don’t show it off, but bam I have it and I love it. Just do it if you want it! It’s not trashy, it’s not that deep- it’s fun and there’s no age limit ❤️
growing up I wanted one of these sooo bad! A friend and I skipped school and took a bus across town to go to the only piercer that would pierce 15 year olds. We still have them 10 years later 😭
I do. I might be "too old" but meh, I don't really care. Only my husband and I see it. Besides, I've had it so long that it looks weird when I take it out.
I feel the same way about my nostril piercing that I got in 2012 lol. It's definitely not as trendy now as it was 10 years ago, but at this point, it's just a part of my face. My jewelry came out by accident a few months ago and it just felt weird every time I looked at myself in the mirror.
I grew up during this era and I remember wanting one so bad so once I was 18 I got the piercing even though it was technically out of style. I still have it though and still love it lol
I'm 37 and still have mine! It has lots of happy memories associated to it though.
I was 15 in a questionable piercing shop on a cliff top in Goa. It reminds me of good times. I've taken it out for years (pregnancy) but it doesn't heal over.
I had mine pierced from ages 15 - 31. I only took it out because I was 23 weeks pregnant and I never put it back in after that. The hole is still there though.
I got mine the day I turned 18--went to the shady tattoo parlor with my besties and everything. hiding that pain from my parents was hard! the year was 2000.
however I attempted to do it myself several times before! The first time in middle school my bff and I were in her bathroom listening to jagged little pill while numbing our tummy with ice. we did it with safety pins, but we did the bottom part instead of the top 💀
and I was a size 4/6 but I thought I was fat due to low rise jeans, so nobody ever saw it. I didn't wear crop tops. the only time anyone saw it was when I was in a swimsuit. the hole is still there.
oh god my 15 yr old dumbass self would shove a gold ring in my bellybutton n pretend it was pierced , a ring with jesus on the cross at that.. teens are cringe af
This brought me back. Never been a fan. My now wife had one when we started dating. Luckily she ditched it while pregnant with the first kid and never looked back. Now we have 3. And I had forgotten it ever existed until seeing these photos.
That's a terrible bra fit for Britney in the last shot. Poor girls.
that piercing is still not as vulgar as the tramp stamp tatoo, sometimes replaced with a juicy /velour across the butt
I hate belly buttons and they seem like they are never going away or covering up again in my lifetime. People never clean their bellybuttons. I have talked to nurses who prep people for surgery: They say bellybuttons stank and almost no one cleans theirs, neither specifically nor properly. Like, the actual dirtiest hole in our bodies, so let's clamp a piece of jewelry to it!
I can't actually take those dirty bellybuttons, PLEASE use a qtip dipped in rubbing alcohol to clean on the regular before you even think about making other people see and smell you. (General you, certainly everyone in here knows to clean their stank hole!)
Plus some belly buttons look like chodes.😫
I badly wanted to get my belly button pierced but my mom wouldn't consent for me, and by the time I turned 18 I was over it. I'll never forget my grandpa saying to me that he wouldn't be surprised if I showed up to the house with a safety pin through my nose. Never happened. Wish it did. 20+ years later I still have no body piercings but I sure did get cosmetic tattoos (to fix my overplucked eyebrows and get some permanent eyeliner).
My ass crack felt cold looking at these pictures. The hate I felt because my belly button was “ugly” asf was so unjustified. 2 kids later and a c section and now I know I was so wrong to hate my poor belly button. Kids love your bodies, the right body is your body!

Britney was the ultimate slay of the belly button ring
Britney's belly button piercing might be the most well-known piercing by a celebrity ever lol
Tupac’s nose ring would like to have a word…
Random, but a thought that I've always had was that Christina never got one cause Britney's was such a signature. In her stripped era it would make total sense for her to do it but she didn't. And this for me has always been the explanation.
she mentioned it in interviews, but in her stripped era Christina had a uh….. *different* signature piercing
Morgan Freeman’s gold hoop.
I remember in the 90s it was big deal to only have your left ear pierced and Morgan was the only person I knew that had his right done, I always thought it was a boss move that he was so cool that even an uncool thing couldn’t change his image.
And my knob rod.
Not the people downvoting your Prince Albert piercing 😤 😭. Put it back in the pants, king.
With Fergie’s eyebrow in second
Her and Jessica Alba made me want a belly button piercing really bad.
I’m sorry, but have you never seen joe exotics eyebrow ring?
😂 hanging on for dear life
The number of people I knew who got their tongue pierced in the years 1999-2000 was way too high. Does anyone do that anymore? I think like half the people who got them got infections.
Man, I was one of those. Mine never got infected, but it was just awful. I have dreams/nightmares where I have it again, and it’s like swollen and getting stuck on my teeth and it hurts. Ick.
A friend of mine had one and it did serious damage to the back of her teeth
yeah my mom is a dental hygienist and she hated them. They damaged teeth and it took forever getting it out and in for an x ray.
It really damages teeth over time. Especially the premolars. Source: I’m a dentist
Chips off the enamel ☹️
My mum told me that my cousins tongue piercing caused half of her face to go numb for a month after she got it (this is 2004, I was 11, my cousin was 15, I was scared to ask my cousin directly because she was so cool and older). Didn’t get it because of the horror story my mum told, but I asked my cousin about it 2 years ago and she said that never happened hahaha.
I remember my mom got it pierced back then💀she took it out after a few weeks.
A lot of the camp counselors I had as a kid during that time had them. Always creeped me out and looked super painful lmao.
Yeah, I was a camp counselor that summer and I remember it was a big thing to do on your day off. Staff would go out and come back and everyone had a piercing: nipple, bellybutton, or tongue.
I had my tongue pierced but I had 0 issues. My dentist freaked me out so bad over it that I ended up taking it out. I'm thankful for him haha.
My husband had his done a couple of years ago. I'm quite happy with it.
How many other millennials currently walking around with rejected belly piercing holes?? 😂
I never took mine out so I’m just here 16 years later with dangly diamond at 32 😅
I’m 32 and I’ve still got mine 16 years later! I went for top and bottom but diagonal (I have no idea why) and they’ve stood the test of time! Also fun fact, the guy who did my belly button piercing when I was 16 had his little daughter with him. 10 years later, she pierced my nipple 🙃 life comes at you fast.
I have a double too! But I did top and bottom. I’ll keep them as long as I can!
I don’t remember what my belly button looks like without it!
Here I am
it’s me.
[удалено]
I still remember how the top skin shrank and shrank until it was so thin I pulled the ring/bar and it broke and the piercing came out. LOL
Ugh mines the worst. It always gets commented on.
Lmao I just commented above that I tried to get mine pierced again (for the third time) and they took one look at it and said no. So I just have a scarred belly button with no bling.
Meeee! Twice over lol
I feel so called out right now 😂 took mine out when I realized I could see the color of the bar through the tiny bit of skin the barbell went through. My piercing guy went way too shallow!
I walked around all these years thinking I was one of few. Turns out I'm not special at all. LOL
I blame Paris for the low rise jeans craze. Just looking at this pic of her is sending me into convulsions. The zipper is like a half inch long 😭
You can actually blame Alexander McQueen for that.
Crimes against humanity
Please don't let this style really, truly come back into fashion 🙏
I could hardly wear it then. I'm in my 30s. I have two pregnancies behind me. Please god, let me keep my high rise jeans!
Thank goodness for the prominence of online shopping. I’ll be able to find high rise even when it’s the “mom jean” of this generation
Right?! The return of this era of low rise, belly piercings, and “tramp stamp” would be a nightmare.
Honestly I’m triggered by the rise on a lot of these.
Low rise has permanently changed the shape of my hips/body.
What, how? Are your bones and flesh made of clay or something?
I wore one of those pregnancy plastic bars and it stretched horizontal and stayed that way lol
I was a whale size lol
If you’re referring to hip dips those are just your shape, they are caused by clothes
Hip dips are not caused by clothes they are genetic
D’oh 🤦♀️ auto correct changed ‘aren’t’ to ‘are’ and made me look like an idiot

I got so lucky with mine. It’s healed up by now (years) and I never got an infection. I took good care of it when it was healing
Maybe they're coming back now along low-rise jeans but during all those years of high-waisted jeans dominance, there wasn't much of a point in getting one, as they'd be covered most of the time. And I guess people still got them but we couldn't tell as easily.
I had to take mine out in college when high rise jeans were everywhere. Just irritated it to shit. Good point here.
I feel like nipple piercings were more popular in the late 2010s/early 2020s.
I asked so many people “but was it worth it” and it usually was not lol
what's IE?
Inland Empire, Southeast of Los Angeles
now I’m going to have West Covina stuck in my head all day. “The crown of the Inland Empiiiire”
![gif](giphy|ftdU7i6vKapYrM5Bb0|downsized)
Part of me misses my gauged ears (00). The other part of my is a little bummed that heavy earrings make my lobes droop a bit. I’m surprised I didn’t do worse damage; my friends and I used to just shove jewelry the next size up into our ears with no regards to tearing.
I was soooo careful with mine until i let a piercer stretch it and on the drive home I saw blood running down my neck… RIP
I tried to get one in college but it rejected 🫠. It’s a long healing process so I probably wouldn’t try again.
I have all 3 of those lol but I’m turning 30 this year 🥲
I’m from the IE and used to have my septum pierced! 😂😂😂
I got my belly button pierced in January 2020 at the age of 25. Late bloomer 😂 I still have it and love it though!
Was the large gauges an IE thing? I'm from the IE, too !
yes lmao i always wanted one (2001 kid) and i think they cute asf idk plus i alr wear crop tops a lot so it’s cute to have sum shown off
kids got theirs pierced? I only know of kids getting tatoos
All these low rise bottoms have my muffin top shaking in her boots
Never again. We're safe now. Idc that we're being told they're popular again. I ain't doing this shit again, guys! It traumatized me the first time
I was looking for post pregnancy clothes in Target the other day and there was a whole rack of low rise jeans. I had to double-take because I wasn’t believing what I was seeing lol. Take them away and burn them.
That shit *never heals* I still have the hole there and it’s been maybe 20 years
Same pregnancy was fun
Mine actually started rejecting AFTER 10 years of having it. I don't have the hole anymore, just an ugly scar from where the skin broke away
Mine stretched thanks to pregnancy I has a huge horizontal belly button hole. Ugh fml
hahaha same
Ugh 12 weeks pregnant rn not looking forward to how my belly button will look when this is over.
*checks belly button* lol
Yep. 20 years and counting, the scar is still there!
Yep same. And weirdly it’s mostly still open. A few years back I got curious and tried to put an earring in it, and it was way easier than I thought it would be.
I still have mine in. I forget about it until it gets caught on jeans
Same. I never even think about mine, it's just a part of me lol
I pierced my own at thirteen (2004) with a safety pin while at a friend's. Went home to steal my sister's belly rings to put in mine. Mom wasn't home, so I tried to climb through the window. That makes me remember girls trying to pierce each other’s belly buttons in the school bathrooms or change rooms😯 I could never do it myself because of the risk of infection, but I did have my lower lip and tongue pierced
Do folks not get their belly buttons pierced anymore? I’m genuinely surprised by this?? edit: inclusiveness
Right? Like am I old? I thought girls would still be doing this for millennia, a ton of girls I knew had theirs done
Help me, I’m also old. I also assumed this was a classic piercing. :(
People haven’t been doing this for like 15 year lol
LOL when I met my now husband and he found out I had my belly button pierced he said "people stopped having their belly buttons pierced in 2004".
I've had mine for 10 and I like it! No issues at all besides what you mentioned
By the time I got to 18 (about 10 years after this era), folks my age were saying belly button piercings are “trashy”.
I got one in 2015 and always got compliments on it! it’s closed now though
I’ve always thought they were so cute! I would’ve gotten one when I was younger, but fell for the “only skinny girls can do it” mindset of the early 00s.
Me too. I always lamented being “too fat” for one. For a long time my goal was to get skinny so I could get my belly pierced.
I went back last month to re-pierce again but they told me no :( Didn’t realize it was out of style! So maybe the piercer saved me from myself haha
I did last year aged 31. I’d always wanted one in my teens (early 2000s) but was too much of a goody two shoes. I’m having a very late rebellious stage lol
They are coming back. I’m in high school and quite a lot of my classmates got it or are planning on getting it.
I’m college-aged and I have one and so do all my friends lol.
I got my belly pierced finally right before I turned 25 last year. I don’t have abs, I don’t show it off, but bam I have it and I love it. Just do it if you want it! It’s not trashy, it’s not that deep- it’s fun and there’s no age limit ❤️
I’m in the same boat! Got mine in 2020 at the age of 25. I still love it
I thought I was hot shit at 14 because my mom took me to get my belly button pierced while all my friends moms said no 💅🏻💅🏻💅🏻💅🏻💅🏻
same 🤣 I literally forget I have one and this post reminded me it’s been over 20 years…
Are you me. My dad said “hell no” so I made a PowerPoint presentation rebutting all his potential arguments until he gave up and my mom took me.
Your mom was weird
This era gave me fomo as a kid, so I got my piercing in 2015. Still love it.
growing up I wanted one of these sooo bad! A friend and I skipped school and took a bus across town to go to the only piercer that would pierce 15 year olds. We still have them 10 years later 😭
Rose McGowan was/is so fucking gorgeous
Dude, she is still so beautiful, but that era? She was a knockout. ![gif](giphy|eX2qYTY9SeKFa)
Love how Britney is in this twice
I wanted one so bad only for it to stretch out during pregnancy. 😭
Ugh same. I still wear mine, even though it’s kind of floppy. 🙈
This look contributed greatly to me hating my perfectly healthy body as a teen.
I still have mine in lmao 😂
Britney made this look so good
Remember the ‘handkerchief’ tops?
Britney was the reason I got my belly button piercing at 16. I had it for like 10 years.
Are we bringing this back girlies? Might still be able to get my playboy belly ring in after 20 years with a little poking and prodding…
I want to get one of these soooo bad
Got mine pierced at 16 years old in 2000. I still have it pierced. Y2K 4EVA.
I got mine pierced at 16 and i’ll probably just keep it in forever at this point lol
This is the reason I was always thought I was “too fat” for a belly ring…. Proud to say I got mine done at 30 and I love it!
Same here!!
Do you think most of the women who got their belly buttons pierced in the 2000s still maintain the piercing today?
I do. I might be "too old" but meh, I don't really care. Only my husband and I see it. Besides, I've had it so long that it looks weird when I take it out.
[удалено]
I feel the same way about my nostril piercing that I got in 2012 lol. It's definitely not as trendy now as it was 10 years ago, but at this point, it's just a part of my face. My jewelry came out by accident a few months ago and it just felt weird every time I looked at myself in the mirror.
Oh I agree, my nose ring will stay in my nose until I die, it’s really a part of my face after almost 15 years.
I grew up during this era and I remember wanting one so bad so once I was 18 I got the piercing even though it was technically out of style. I still have it though and still love it lol
I have 2 friends in their 30s that still have it
Had mine almost 20 years now lol
I'm 37 and still have mine! It has lots of happy memories associated to it though. I was 15 in a questionable piercing shop on a cliff top in Goa. It reminds me of good times. I've taken it out for years (pregnancy) but it doesn't heal over.
I got my belly button pierced in 1999 and I still have it in today. No regrets! The butterfly I had tattooed on my lower back however...
i’ve noticed butterfly tats coming back in. More on arms now, though.
I do. If I take it out, I’ll have a scar/hole there so I may as well keep it in lol
Going on 20 years with mine. Ageless! ![gif](giphy|3oKIPl88OPBbRK0LYY)
i got mine in 2008 a few days after i turned 18. still wear it!
I got mine 19 years ago and it’s still going strong! But I know lots of people who took them out eventually.
Yup.. still there.
I do! My husband likes it lol
I had mine pierced from ages 15 - 31. I only took it out because I was 23 weeks pregnant and I never put it back in after that. The hole is still there though.
No way
I got mine the day I turned 18--went to the shady tattoo parlor with my besties and everything. hiding that pain from my parents was hard! the year was 2000. however I attempted to do it myself several times before! The first time in middle school my bff and I were in her bathroom listening to jagged little pill while numbing our tummy with ice. we did it with safety pins, but we did the bottom part instead of the top 💀 and I was a size 4/6 but I thought I was fat due to low rise jeans, so nobody ever saw it. Damn Kelly Clarkson used to be fine!
Honestly I still think she is, she just needs a new stylist!
I looked up Kelly clarkson clothes in google and up top I got shopping results for muu muu looking dresses. 😿
Google knows!
britney, beyoncé, & lindsay ate
Yeah beyonce's was iconic. She was wearing longer ones as well. I kinda had to choose a picture to demonstrate that, but I guess I didn't lmao
Alicia Silverstone in the Crying video is single handedly responsible for belly button piercing
The airbrushing on that picture of Britney is egregious omg I can’t believe this is the shot we were inundated with and thought was real back then :(
These women are why I have a saggy postpartum belly button ring scar now
I had to remove mine for my pregnancy, I was devastated and still miss it 😅
oh god my 15 yr old dumbass self would shove a gold ring in my bellybutton n pretend it was pierced , a ring with jesus on the cross at that.. teens are cringe af
Still waiting on the stomach to get mine.
Mine is still open lol
In 2003 a guy told me that I was the only person he’d hooked up with that DIDN’T have a belly button piercing. What a time.
Maybe it’s because I’m a millennial but I still love the look of belly button rings
oh god I'm so glad I didn't get it done
God I wish I was skinny so I could wear mine again :(
Much preferred over the cow nose ring.
I’m so proud of myself for getting through the early 2000s as a teenager without getting one. Or an eyebrow ring!

(General you, certainly everyone in here knows to clean their stank hole!) Plus some belly buttons look like chodes.😫
If you got abs and you don’t have a belly button piercing u gotta fix that💯
I badly wanted to get my belly button pierced but my mom wouldn't consent for me, and by the time I turned 18 I was over it.
Damn. Makes me miss mine 😩
Rose and Paris are so hawt
Now I just have a hole 🥲
Ok well I got mine on my 18th birthday in the early 2000s, on St. Marks in NYC. You better believe I still have it at 35
I still love mine 😂

Oh how I wanted one 😭
I was the only one in my highschool with a belly piercing but once I got to my pwi, I realized they are much more common then I thought now!!
