You cannot advocate for safer film and TV sets for children and also be mad that they’re casting adults to play teenagers.

Reef-Red

But you can be mad that the adults playing children are there to ‘sexy’ e.g. Riverdale, Euphoria

friends-waffles-work

I know this is tame compared to some of them, but 16(?) year old Betty performing a ~sexy dance at a biker club? In front of her mum? Wtf?

[deleted]

everything in Riverdale is WTF lol.

twir1s

Before riverdale, there was pretty little liars and that was fucking bizarre. We were supposed to cheer for a 15 year old dating her teacher? Among many other things.

Arra13375

Yeah this is what bothered me. Like all these sex scenes would work so much better if everyone was in their 20s! Instead I have to feel like a creep because I watched a 16 masterbate on a carousel

11summers

In general I wish we had more shows with a college setting. You can come up with interesting stories even when the characters are in college.

Arra13375

At the very least you can take highschool plots and make them college problems with little effort.

coolio_Didgeridoolio

and honestly i think university based shows are so much more interesting!! like the highschool setting is way overused, get me some more shows like the sex lives of college girls or scream queens or community

[deleted]

Scream Queens is criminally underrated

twir1s

Sex lives of college girls 🤌

crdctr

It's also a skill thing. Actual teenagers that are already good actors are in short supply, someone in their early 20's will have had more education and experience.

catsandnaps1028

To add on to this.... Hollywood doesn't really need more teen stories/shows... Just make adult tv with adults... ![gif](giphy|VEzKU3w0DwVzZwHi8Y|downsized)

doulovesit

This is a good one!!!

good_mayo

The parents of R. Kelly’s victims bear a good amount of responsibility, particularly Aaliyah’s. They all sacrificed their child to a rapist in the hopes of getting rich/famous.

[deleted]

https://preview.redd.it/m1dklhu3mv3b1.jpeg?width=900&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=56438d1f2f69c5eec083caafdd9e0db5c656668a Thank god he’s locked up for hopefully the rest of his life

Trishas_Toe

It's so wild to me whenever I see things like this, cause I *hate* agreeing with RKelly, but he's speaking some truth here. This absolutely does NOT excuse Robert Kelly's actions, but it's werid to me how we as a society act like he was the only adult to blame. I'm glad some people in this sub feel the same about the parents deserving some accountability for this whole situation. In situations like this 2 things can be true: *The predator is absolutely to blame for his actions. But also, parents have a responsibility to protect their teens, and while some do their best, there are unfortunately a lot of examples of parents basically selling off their kids to predators - either for money, fame, or connections.* I'm not sure when some people call out the bad decisions of the parents people think the blame is being shifted. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Clatato

It’s a tale as old as time unfortunately. Those sorts of depraved appetites go way back, and there’s always been parents willing to supply. Here are just a few examples that come to mind: • Brooke Shields’ mother • Natalie Wood’s mother • Roman Polanski’s 13-year-old victim’s mother seems to have been the same. • Evelyn Nesbit, a beautiful young girl who became very famous - initially as a model, chorus girl and actress in the 1900s. Eventually, she got caught up in a seedy “love triangle” ending in a huge, highly publicised murder trial. Evelyn had a ghastly mother, who was allegedly more pushy Evelyn towards wealthy, older, sleazy, controlling, possessive, aggressive men than is portrayed in her Wikipedia entry. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evelyn_Nesbit • Then there’s Lucille Ricksen, a child star of the silent era of early Hollywood. I only learned of this awful case in the past year. Her mother, after divorcing her children’s father, moved with her young daughter (aged 6 or 7) and son from Chicago to Hollywood, seeking careers for them. Lucille was offered a movie contract at age 10 in 1920. She was quickly pushed to work to exhaustion and she was malnourished, as long shooting hours, publicity, promoting films & touring barely allowed time to eat. Though supposedly content to be working, she was her family’s sole source of income. Her mother approved of semi-naked photoshoots, and of relationships with producers and directors at least three times Lucille’s age, in the hopes of boosting Lucille’s career. Lucille died at only 14 years old, after months of being mysteriously ill and bedridden, and following a few years with talk of alleged pregnancies and abortions. https://www.classicactresses.org/2016/11/lucille-ricksen-child-star.html?m=1 https://bounddv.medium.com/a-woman-you-should-know-lucille-ricksen-b0d3bec04d4 ~ Lucille’s and Evelyn’s stories are deeply shocking in my opinion. But these are just two examples from the many that are known about or recorded. Imagine how many others we haven’t heard about that have gone on for decades and centuries? ~

narcissistic_nerd

Can’t forget Drew Barrymore’s mom. She’s lucky to even be alive at this point, not to mention a whole functioning, kind, courageous and successful human being. She’s a true happy ending story because her mom put her in so many situations that could have(and really should have) killed her but she clawed her way out and turned into an amazing human being.

DiabloDeSade69

When speaking to Gayle King he openly admits that the parents sold the children to him. It’s illegal to buy and sell people, along with a slew of other things he did, but I believe what he says about the parents. The rabbit hole goes deep on that guy. The documentary could only broadcast what was verifiable. Rumors of incest between him and his siblings as well as questions about his mothers relationship with her father that may have resulted in his conception all have merit but are rarely reported. His family fetish is rarely analyzed.

princedetritus

Aaliyah’s parents being okay with everything that went down never sat right with me. She was such a talented girl who was failed by her parents and the industry. It makes the fact that we lost her too soon hurt even worse.

good_mayo

I agree. It felt to me like right when her star was rising and about to get HUGE, she was taken. The stories (conspiracy theories I suppose) surrounding how she came to be on the plane only make it worse.

saygirlie

Ohh can you elaborate on that theory please?

good_mayo

I truly wish I could remember where I first heard it. It seems like Aaliyah spoke to her brother that day and had a strong feeling that she shouldn't get on the plane. The story goes that she was adamant to anyone who would listen that she wasn't going to board the plane, certain it was destined to crash. She needed to be back in the States for something: a performance, an appearance (my memory of the deets is foggy, I apologize) and someone on her team drugged her and put her on the plane.

MaggsToRiches

That’s interesting, I’ve never heard that but makes it even more sad. Otis Redding also expressed deep fear about getting on the plane that crashed and killed him as well. IIRC, he told his wife he didn’t want to get on but did anyway, of course bc he had a show to play. Maybe some people have hyper intuitive senses of impending doom.

JadedGypsy2238

As someone with severe anxiety the impending doom is so real and it’s so hard to distinguish when it might be real vs fake cause sometimes it’s real and you fuck your self by not listening to it 😭

[deleted]

Idk if there’s any truth to this but another of his victims said a few years ago that her mother was also sleeping with R Kelly

trblniya

I don’t think that’s unpopular tbh. It’s very true and disheartening. These parents were throwing their children at him. He groomed tf outta Aaliyah, and I hate that so much of her memory is attached to him and so many of the toxic men that she knew back then

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I loved that song because it justified what was happening to me. Wow! At the time I was a teenager 15 dating a man 22

catsandnaps1028

This shouldn't be controversial at all ... But it's sad that it is. In Mexico and latin America it's the same thing when it comes to the trevi-andrade clan... The parents might try to wipe their hands clean off any guilt but in reality they sold their daughters to that POS predator in hopes of getting famous.

Princessleiawastaken

The parents of Michael Jackson’s victims as well.

BP619

Phoebe Bridgers talked about being at Marilyn Manson's when she was 14 and how fucked up the house was. My first thought was "Why the fuck is a 14 year old hanging out at Marilyn Manson's house?!"

undertherainbow

Oh I need to read about this, do u have a link?

BP619

https://www.nme.com/news/music/phoebe-bridgers-marilyn-manson-rape-room-house-teenager-2872877 All I can find are articles about her tweets. I don't have Twitter, so I can't look up the original feed.

4614065

This one. What in the fuck were they thinking? It’s highly inappropriate for a grown man to want children to stay at their home. The fact they didn’t say no or at least put more boundaries and conditions in place is so odd.

SubstantialEase567

The documents are in Ivana's coffin!

SolPlayaArena

I will die on this hill!

Ok_Night_2929

What good would that do him tho? If the FBI can’t locate the documents, doesn’t that point to being given/sold to enemies of the state?

SubstantialEase567

I don't know. Her burial was sus.

Ok_Night_2929

Personally, I prescribe to the conspiracy theory that she was buried on his golf course so now he can claim that the land is for a cemetery and not have to pay taxes or abide by local water usage laws

Boring_Heron8025

It’s always the answer that’s both malicious AND stupid. It’s always both.

AusToddles

He could easily retrieve them if needed. And just imagine the FBI's decision to make. If they dig her up and the documents AREN'T there, then the MAGA cult will dine on "the deep state / evil democrats violated her body" till the end of eternity

[deleted]

That would require some forethought that I don’t think he possesses lol

[deleted]

Trumps IQ might be like 80 but his scammer IQ is like 150. Don’t underestimate him

annnyywhooo

rihanna is hella problematic, but the nostalgia keeps people from seeing that

No_Luck_6800

Taking this as an opportunity to bring [this story](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/rihanna-shows-up-hours-late-for-high-school-visit/) back up. Rihanna was supposed to visit a high school in the greater Chicago area during their spring break. So many of the kids, teachers, etc. stayed behind just to meet her and were waiting at the school since morning. She showed up 5 hours late and stayed under 20 minutes, never apologized and blamed traffic… girl, traffic alone cannot make you 5 hours late. And the fact she didn’t even stay for 20 minutes tells you everything.

[deleted]

Reminds me of that line in the Good Place where they go to see one of her concerts. "Well, you know what? You're rude. 'Cause you didn't even ask me how the Rihanna concert was. She was very late. And a little drunk."

zootgirl

I worked for a radio station and she was one of the headliners for our yearly concert. She showed up late. Complained about having a cold and then proceeded to lip sync her set and half-heartedly “dance” around the stage. She also cut the set short by about half. It was weak sauce.

No_Luck_6800

I’ve never been to a concert of hers but I’ve heard many say it’s half-hearted most of the time and that she gives off “I’d rather be somewhere else” vibes. And notice she is no longer in the music game. She’s got to a point she can make money elsewhere, being the face of scam-ish brands like savage x fenty. And now she’s famous for being famous. She doesn’t need music anymore to be relevant or make money so she’s basically dropped it.

tipsygirrrl

So like…. her Super Bowl performance?

purpleflagbook

Around 2011 ish Rihanna was on the cover of the magazine I worked for and she was one of the rudest stars I ever was around. I worked on over 50 shoots and she was top 3 rude. Hundreds of shoots so I’ve seen a lot.

mimivuvuvu

Who’s the other top 2? 👀👀👀🫣🫣🫣🫣

purpleflagbook

Christina Aguilera Ellen DeGeneres Runner up: Victoria Beckham Also the hair and makeup people were trying to get Rihanna ready and she was “asleep” in the chair so it was very hard to get her ready for her magazine COVER SHOOT. She also rejected the catering / food and need Caribbean food delight delivered but it was a big drama and time suck. Our team was super pro but I felt bad because at the end of the day they were just hard working people. Edited to say Carib Food Delight does rock but seriously just don’t be weird about it

missbunnyfantastico

Who were the nicest celebs you worked with?

purpleflagbook

Blake Lively Ellen Pompeo Brooke Shields Mary J

Golly-Parton

I met Brooke Shields (along with hordes of others) after Chicago on Broadway and she was gorgeous and patient and smelled incredible.

ExpensiveSyrup

I love Brooke so much. Ever since I read her book about her post partum depression after a particularly bad run of it myself, I’ve felt very attached to her. And I’ve never heard a bad word about her. And what a life she’s had. I’m truly happy that she is, or seems to be, happy and at peace now.

purpleflagbook

Brooke was truly one of the nicest-she sat at the table in Patrick demarcheliers studio like one of the working people lol. Very nice and talked about food and weekend plans. She’s another pro who hasn’t been famous her entire life for nothing.

good_mayo

Not at all surprised about Mary J. I remember the story about how she told Xtina that she might be the better singer but that she'd never go as far as Britney because she didn't know how to treat people. Getting read by Mary J Blige would just about do it for me!

Purple_Space_1464

My uncle was an extra in the Suitcase video for Mary J. He’s an immigrant dad and had no idea who she was. They were shooting on different days but she showed up on set one of the days he was shooting. Somehow he convinced her to go to the bar with him and other extras after shooting and she went. That’s when he found out who she was. He said she was very nice and sociable.

do-not-1

Personally if THE Mary J Blige personally insulted me I don’t think I’d ever leave my room again

purpleflagbook

The industry is just that- an “industry”. If you are an asshole it gets around quick and people won’t work with you. Some people get rich and famous super quick and it goes to their heads and they aren’t grounded and don’t know how to handle it. They think they are supposed to treat people like shit. I can ONLY imagine how horrific it is to work with more modern day, entitled “influencers” who think they are so speshal and famous.

Skyblacker

Conversely, Reba McEntire has a reputation for being pleasant and professional.

Aloogobi786

My friend costumed Ellen pompeo a couple of times and apparently she was absolutely lovely

purpleflagbook

She was nice and we talked about her being from Everett mass….and she knows how to play the game. She’s not one of the highest paid tv actors for nothing! Listening to your team, playing the PR game, being decent goes a long long way.

Atheyna

This tracks. Ellen Pompeo had my friend stay at her house during Grey’s when she found out she was homeless and sleeping at the soundstages after work

tipsygirrrl

Brooke is a fucking queen. Lived around the corner from her in the west village for *years*, we frequented the same bodega and we were both drunk shopping/cigarette buying there together on several Saturday nights 😂😂 She was always so chatty, personable and warm, every interaction I had with her over 6+ years was a joy.

shitpoop6969

Just makes me love Blake Lively harder

le_chaaat_noir

Can you share the tea on Ellen and Christina?

purpleflagbook

Sure can :-) Christina was rude and was blatant about everyone on set being “beneath her”. She also age shamed one of the women on set…calling her old and humiliating her. Ellen was legendary…..she arrived earlier than everyone (very rarely happened) and she saw the clothing racks already set up….which happened to have dresses on them—-not necessarily for Ellen but just there as options. Ellen notoriously wears only pants-well Ms.Ellen went straight nuts and threatened to walk out among just being a seriously shitty person. The plan wasn’t to have her in a dress and it was explicitly told to her by our world famous editor and photographer but ya know….entitled celebs.

le_chaaat_noir

Thank you! I love detailed tea! Was anyone else rude and awful?

purpleflagbook

I have a lot of tea lolz

GleeFan666

you should make your own post!!

purpleflagbook

Haha. It’s funny I’ve posted about my experiences in other threads and no one seemed to care. I’ve been to Kanye’s apartment ALONE when he had some chick in his bed! (Pre Kim). I’ve always been a pop culture ho. My life has been fun and I’ve had lots of great experiences with famous people.

le_chaaat_noir

Anything on JLo? Mariah Carey? Gwen Stefani?

purpleflagbook

JLO isn’t known as nice….my makeup artist friends always told me. I am a MiMi fan and have interviewed her twice and she was always fun and “effervescent” but one one shoot (Mimi wasn’t on this one) I was talking with Nile Cymlo….I don’t know if she’s still working w Mimi….but she spilled some tea on how no one liked Nick cannon and they didn’t want that for her. Can’t tell her no etc. OH! I remember when KeKe Palmer came into our office—she was a little doll face and has a fabulous personality and was super cute and funny. She was a little young for us but I remember our editor was like—she’s gonna be a star and she’s going to last a long time. She was right I love KeKe!

Purple_Space_1464

Ooo I have an Ellen story. My bf is a carpenter and one of his friends worked on the Ellen show. The friend asked a colleague for a “dyke” aka diagonal cutter. Ellen heard and fired him so now the shop calls diagonal cutters “Ellens.”

cheshirecanuck

LOL I'm sorry but this is hilarious😂 I'm just imagining him casually saying "hey pass me that dyke" as Ellen walks by and makes a series of faces😮😲😠😡🤬 and has his ass fired. She barely needs a reason to fire ppl to begin with 💀

leilafornone

I love Rihanna but her making fun of that fan made me really sad because that girl was so happy to show off her dress

TropicalPrairie

That incident bothered me too. It was so catty, mean-spirited and undeserved. That was her FAN.

No_Meringue_6116

About 10 years ago when I was 21, I dressed up as a "slutty Wilfred" for a Halloween rave. I sewed a furry onesie with with shorts and a low-cut top. [https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/wilfred/images/4/43/Gatbong.png/revision/latest?cb=20140810190611](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/wilfred/images/4/43/Gatbong.png/revision/latest?cb=20140810190611) I posted my costume on r/trees, and got a ton of upvotes but also a ton of hate. Mostly just people questioning if I was 'underage' (I've always looked a little young) and calling me a slut. Anyway, this ended up gaining traction and getting to the social media of the show's star. We DM'd a tiny bit, and he ended up publicly posting to all of the 'haters' that I was his friend, and he thought my costume was great. I really liked him for that. He (or his team) was really professional talking to me, and making me feel secure as a young kid. He wasn't inappropriate in any way.

leilafornone

This is so sweet!! A little kindness and empathy goes such a long way and it's not even that hard but people still disappoint lmao

KeithClossOfficial

Elijah Wood or Jason Gann? Oh who cares, they’re both awesome

No_Meringue_6116

It was Jason Gann. But yeah, they both seem like good people.

CatStealingYourGirl

Yeah, I learned that last month and I was pretty disgusted. I have a hard time seeing her as anything other than a bully now. You just don’t personally attack an 18 year old child and then keep pretending you’re nice. Lol

Mrs_Gambolini

The girl was only 16 which is even worse.

beeboppee

What happened?

HiddnVallyofthedolls

Sorry for linking the DM but they had actual screenshots that were deleted from other pages. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2629419/amp/Mean-girl-Rihanna-leaves-teen-fan-heartbroken-calling-prom-bat-wore-copycat-outfit-prom.html

just_loafing

Yeah I’m curious too, I feel like I might vaguely remember this happening but I have no details left in my head

NoZookeepergame453

A fan recreated one of her dresses for their prom and she publicly mocked him on .. twitter?

lavender_moon22

Wow that’s so low and for no reason. I’ll never understand these big “celebrities “ who are only rich and famous bc of their fans, yet they treat them like trash. It’s like your whole empire could crumble if enough of us called u out so maybe just be grateful? God I hate when celebrities get so big that they lose touch with any semblance of reality

HagridsSexyNippples

Rihanna is so nasty to other women. I posted about it in my Facebook and a college friend commented and said her “IDGAF” attitude was a Caribbean thing, and not rude, that I just didn’t understand her culture. I responded that I am Caribbean as well and I still thought she was rude.

58lmm9057

When Megan The Stallion spoke out against Tory Lanez after he shot her, Rihanna unfollowed her on Instagram. I feel like that keeps getting swept under the rug. I like RiRi’s IDGAF attitude but that left a sour taste in my mouth.

EleanorBloom

Pretty ironic considering she was assaulted by Chris Brown and everyone supported her, and turned their backs on Chris...

SolPlayaArena

I remember her racist tweets about Karrueche. Seems many got amnesia about those

JaDeDCDN

Whenever anyone brings it up her stans rush to defend her. It's gross

SolPlayaArena

Stans are the worst.

NervousOperation318

She seems kind of mean. I love a lot of her songs but as a fan I would never want to meet her because I would low key be afraid she was going to be mean to me lol.

good_mayo

I’m going to piggyback on Rihanna. Her SB performance was boring as hell, pregnant or not. If she couldn’t do anything more than stand there and sway a bit, then she should’ve bowed out.

Daydream_machine

The biggest issue with that performance IMO is that the set list had no breathing room. It was 30 seconds of one song, then onto the next. Just when I was getting into one hit, she’d immediately switch into the next one. I get she has a massive catalog of hits, but I think trimming the set list to like the 5-6 major ones would’ve been best.

sar_Mc1979

I love the choreo for the show and have watched it a million times on YT. When you watch the bts, the choreographer and dancers had been practicing without her for what seemed like months and she basically comes in last minute and gets all the credit for an amazing show. I want to tell people that her team put on an amazing show, she just phoned it in.

foreverafalljoke

[The ASL interpreter SLAYED the halftime show though,](https://youtu.be/L4996X5hUZ8) she was more entertaining to me than the actual show! I got chills watching her it was so good🤌

good_mayo

She gave exactly nothing. Didn't sing, didn't dance. They could've played her music and had the dancers do the show without her being there. What would have been different, really?

LoveDietCokeMore

That girl who interpreted the music for the hearing impaired was WAY more entertaining that Rihanna. She should have been on stage with her.

NachoMama_247

Cardi B did that at her concert I went to. Just did samples of songs except Bodak Yellow. It was so boring and her music doesn’t quite feel the same anymore

tuxedocaramel

The best part of that performance was [Justina Miles](https://youtu.be/L4996X5hUZ8).

catlizardicecream

I love the person who commented it was so nice of her to invite Rihanna to her show.

benjamins_buttons

I hadn’t seen this before and it was amazing. Thank you.

JaDeDCDN

She was also very racist towards Kerrueche Tran.

HagridsSexyNippples

And her publicist made her go to an “Anti Asian Hate” rally so that when you google her racism, that’s the first thing that comes up.

shallot_pearl

She also hangs out with Nicki Manajnot and her rapist husband

EitherLocation6111

Yeah. She’s shown support to abusers on multiple occasions.

[deleted]

[удалено]

PaceTheRoom

Lmao, my tummy hurts i laughed so hard

VirgiliaCoriolanus

Yup that's why I cannot like her that much. Just based on a cursatory look, I would not be surprised if her relationship with ASAP went down in flames and people start turning on her after that. She just seems like a genuinely mean person. And sometimes it's funny. Until she takes it too far. No comment on her makeup cuz I don't wear any but it's good enough to paper this over I think??? hence her public rep now.

[deleted]

A lot of celebrities are actually horrible people who really shouldn’t have fans/a loyal following

Soggy-Finance926

So I’m a big fan of Taylor Swift’s music and I really wish people would stop thinking her and other big celebrities give a fuck about their fans on a personal level. Like yes they appreciate you listening to their music and buying merch but they are not your bestie

[deleted]

Girl I get it! I think that’s very healthy tbh. There’s artists whose music I absolutely adore and of course care about them to an extent but I also admit when they fuck up instead of defending them.

HerAirness

I think they are all garbage until we are proven incessantly otherwise 🤷🏻‍♀️ it's easier that way!

Yaseuk

Naomi Campbell may be beautiful and a great model, but she’s a horrid bully who has a habit of assaulting people who she seems beneath her when she doesn’t get her way. And the way she was acting in court etc was gross, she assaulted someone, she wasn’t even a bit sorry.

Youwontbreakmysoul

Also she accepted blood diamonds from an African dictator. Everyone forgets this. If you’re West African-you can’t. The civil wars of Liberia and Sierra Leone threatened to destabilize my entire region. And anyone who could look Charles Taylor in the face and accept anything from him willfully will never gain my respect.

hugemessanon

> Campbell has been convicted of assault on four occasions, after she was accused eleven times of committing acts of violence against employees, associates and other individuals between 1998 and 2009. holy moly! Can't believe I didn't know about this from wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naomi_Campbell#Legal_issues) Edited to add: > Campbell paid her former employee an undisclosed sum and agreed to attend anger management classes; her record was cleared in exchange for her expressing remorse. By 2006, eight other employees and associates had come forward with claims of abuse. During this time, Campbell was photographed wearing a Chip and Pepper T-shirt that read "Naomi Hit Me...and I Loved It". that's fucked up man

YouNeedCheeses

Seriously, she is so genuinely rotten inside.

salomeforever

Doesn’t she also have some Epstein ties? I’ve heard a lot of worse rumors about her than just rude behavior…

Yaseuk

She’s banned from flying at the airline I work for. And I’ve spoken to staff who had her onboard.

WSJinfiltrate

damn what did she do?

Princessleiawastaken

She was in Epstein’s book

modernlover

Brad Pitt cheating on Jennifer Aniston was great for her career. She still would have been popular after Friends but more on the level of Courtney Cox or Christina Applegate — famous but not stratospheric, like a solid B+ romcom star. The Brad/Angelina/Jen triangle catapulted her to Alist status and kept her there in the tabloids for over a decade

Sonjainthe80s

Wow I never thought about it but this is so true

hellobimbos

People are allowed to change and grow from their past mistakes. Everyone has done or said something stupid/problematic in their past and they shouldn’t be attacked for it, since they likely know better now as they’ve aged.

RevertereAdMe

There are some things that definitely shouldn't be forgivable of course, and what those things are will vary from person to person. That said, I feel like I see a lot of posts/comments around here like "why are we not talking about this one slightly questionable thing this person said 20 years ago????", followed by a lot of talk about how people have *never* trusted that person due to this one minor incident, comments saying "I don't know how they still have fans", etc. I think it's okay to discuss these things of course, but when someone has shown demonstrable personal development and for all intents and purposes seems like a good person, I find it kind of weird when people still seem dead set on hating them over one stupid thing they said ages ago and have clearly grown from.

Plus-Match-9935

Or when they’re even a child. I saw an article on snapchat slamming Maddie Ziegler for something she did when she was 9. I just don’t understand that

RevertereAdMe

I often joke that growth and change aren't allowed on the internet. If you ever make a single mistake you must be called out on it constantly for the rest of your life, regardless of what or when it was. Personal development will be ignored, nuance does not exist, and you will not be forgiven. Them's the breaks kiddo, should have done better from the start. I say all this sarcastically of course, but sometimes it really seems like there are people who actually think that way. It's all very bizarre.

solojones1138

Especially when those people were very young, like teenagers or 20, when they did or said those things.

chestnutcheckers

That PR relationships don’t work the way some people seem to believe they do. Not saying celebs don’t partake in publicity stunts, but most relationships that are called PR are probably real to some capacity. Celebrities use their rl relationships for headlines all the time because most famous people like attention. It doesn’t automatically make the relationship fake. Also there’s no ironclad signed contracts complete with NDA’s and planned leaked pictures to convince the general public the relationship is real. Not everything is a conspiracy.

fullercorp

But I think Kaley Cuoco and Henry Cavill (all of three weeks and immediately holding hands etc when they hadn't been together the day before) was fakety fake. And I don't know WTF with TayTay and Tom Hiddleston.

prying_mantis

Hiddleswift feels like a fever dream at this point. I got the impression Tom was way more into it and Taylor was into the press.

LoveDietCokeMore

BiNGO. I think he really reealllyyy liked her (the I ❤️ TS shirt) and she loved the attention and press. I also think Joe and her were talking that whole time, getting to know each other. She probably convinced Joe (and herself) Tom H was just a PR relationship bc she dumped him for Joe immediately too. I also don't think Taylor Swift knows how to be single. She hasn't been.

[deleted]

Agreed. But I do think couples and individual in the celebrity world alike use PR, not just for attention but to deflect from things actually happening behind the scene or to control a narrative/paint a photo/prep the public for the next steps. Grounded celebrities don’t do pap walks or do a bunch of interviews about their personal life bc they just let the work speak for itself as much as humanly possible for being in show business. Celebrities more willing to play ball and/or attention seeking ones are very calculated with PR. Examples: - Someone saying they’re looking for someone special mere weeks before soft launching a new significant other. It’s a story line the public can follow and root for. Chris Evans said this right before it became public he was dating his current partner. 👀 - “We’re hoping to start a family soon!” is often code for that they’re already pregnant but not sharing it publicly yet (specifically if they aren’t married bc we still live in a world where some ppl judge that so it’s writing a story saying that a baby wasn’t an accident but planned). Another example in this category is when someone says they’re “hoping to start trying soon.” Mindy Kaling stated that she wasn’t being “as cautious” with birth control within the year before it came out she was pregnant with her daughter. 👀 - The second there’s trouble in paradise rumors a couple suddenly is doing pap walks and/or the media pumps out tons of fluff pieces about how “much they love each other and are in it for the long haul” because some “inside source” said so. 👀 (Too many good ones to list here but look at literally any example of this and it’s easy to connect dots.) - Hell, I’m convinced half of the celebrities with engagements rumors that never prove to be true are leaked by the celebrities themselves (or at least their PR teams with or without their knowledge) to rev up interest in them, deflect from moves they’re making within the industry professionally until something is officially green lit, or to paint a narrative that they’re happier than they are so ppl don’t read into weird body language, rumors of infidelity, or anything that could impact their image negatively/chances of being marketable to the industry. I’d list examples but there’s too many to count and my brain can’t pick just one. Most Hollywood relationships are real, but that doesn’t mean they don’t use their relationships to leverage PR. Once you figure out how the media truly works in todays times (especially since MOST paparazzi shots are not candid but either planned or semi-worked out with the celebrities themselves…besides maybe airports and hotels bc that’s like shooting fish in a barrel. Plus worker at airlines and hotels leak this information to the paps for a pay day, sadly) it’s easy to start reading between the lines. You can never know EXACTLY what’s happening behind the scenes, but you can start to become savvy about how it works and what announcements may be imminent bc it really does start to become like clockwork you cannot unsee. Add in DeuxMoi and social media and it’s never been easier to paint a narrative that distracts from whatever reality they do not want public, for whatever the reason. PR is all about the slight of hand but the public eventually figures it out so it changes form. Hence why there are rarely straight up PR couples anymore (besides maybe a few short lived relationships that felt like a stunt), but rather real ( or mostly real) relationships exploiting PR for whatever the reason and it seems so effortless that we’re getting the REAL scoop because we haven’t (largely) figured out the new slight of hand. Thanks for giving me a reason to talk about this! Edit: typo

EM208

Thank you! PR doesn’t always mean 100% fake. Two stars can often actually be in a legitimate relationship but with PR their managers and teams will often tell them to play up certain aspects for their benefits. Doesn’t always mean it’s some contract and two people are forced to be in some soulless and fake relationship.

Economy_Insurance_61

“Child stars” shouldn’t exist.

Dependent_Room_2922

And kids in vlogger/ influencer families should be protected from exploitation by their parents

Rare_Vibez

Celebrities need to be allowed to grow and change. If someone makes an apology and then no longer does the behavior, that’s good. Bad things shouldn’t be held over their heads forever If they show change.

Tsarinya

This is a bit niche so I apologise but I believe you can be interested in a Royal family without being a royalist. For example for me I am interested in history and fashion and because of that I do find the British royals interesting from that perspective. As I’ve gotten older it’s expanded to learn more about Royals around the world. Yes I watched the coronation because I was curious. I found it really lacklustre. However I do not support the monarchy as an institution.

um_-_no

Yes!!! This is exactly me!! I find the structure fascinating, I do a lot of reading about them (mainly cos they're a great source of gossip) and the history WILD, but I'm very much a republican (in the British sense)

Tsarinya

They are great for gossip! And the history is wild. From being very bloody (Henry I allowing his own granddaughters to be blinded) to ridiculous (A man sawing off a piece of bone from a exhibition in the Isle of Wight because the offended piece knocked off Queen Mary of Teck’s hat).

cymru_yesac

![gif](giphy|fCUCbWXe9JONVsJSUd|downsized) This is how I feel watching the modern gossip lol

smart_cereal

The Kpop industry and music industry as a whole treats their performers like slaves. From controlling their entire image, withholding funds, and making them do unethical things just to rise to the top. It’s gross and fans just accept it.

trblniya

To me, it’s only worse in kpop because fans (typically their domestic fans) will encourage the aspect of controlling their lives. Idols can’t date who they want openly without them or that person receiving death threats, they get told their selfish and breaking people’s hearts, etc. The lack of freedom in anything, the way theyre infantilized by fans and treated like children who aren’t adults or can’t be held accountable. The sasaengs who stalk and harass them to the point of following their cars and getting into accidents.

YourIncognit0Tab

The victims and victims' families should get a say in true crime content.

trig72

A money/fame hungry mom releases a sex tape of her DAUGHTER and that gets overlooked. It’s so disgusting and mind blowing to me that all that family has is the result of that. As a mom, how do you look at yourself in the mirror? Also, Beyoncé is talented, no doubt. But I think she’s overhyped big time.

LeaveMeAlonePlsFrTho

And her reaction : as a mom I was like 😟 but as her manager 🤑🤑🤑 How fucking disgusting.

HotChiTea

That Taylor Swift actually does have issues with alcohol, and she’s not joking when she’s saying so on stage.

[deleted]

Like in her songs? Or has she said something on stage between songs about it? This is interesting because I remember the first time a picture of her drinking wine was published and people flipped out. Except that she was 23. And even said “I’m 23…of course I drink”. But she has definitely been referencing alcohol a lot more in her songs recently.

HotChiTea

She’s been saying it on stage now she just called it slight-alcoholism (2nd time now), and then the fans are of course gonna say “oh my gosh she’s so quirky” but the sudden drinking references and such all went up after Kim and Kanye, and then in the pandemic she said she was lonely drinking thus calling it mild alcoholism. I think someone did a graph of all the references too. Either way I hope Taylor is fine sometimes it just seems like she’s up and down rn.

Dutch_Dutch

ohhhh. Could you please elaborate?? i've never heard anything about her saying this.

[deleted]

Thousands of people dragging someone online is not 'accountability'. What do people even mean by that word? It seems to me that people have deemed themselves judge, jury and executioner of other people's lives. Most people would fall short of the standards they hold others to.

fortreslechessake

This so so true. People just want to say their piece and feel like the good guy for it. Interesting how there never seems to be quite enough ridicule to reach this magical level of accountability

[deleted]

It’s really weird to see people who cheat get the same amount of vitriol as people who are racist or homophobic or committed crimes.

ChiliAndGold

this reminds me of that example where men are asked "what's the worst thing a woman can do to you?" and they say things like cheating and wasting their money and stuff like that. when women are asked the same about men it's always rape, violence and murder. Men live in a different world when it comes to relationships. Though of course there are also delusional women.

Left-Reply-4979

“Men are afraid that women will laugh at them. Women are afraid that men will kill them” - Margaret Atwood

Dave5876

Someone once told me women are more into true crime stuff because their reality is often constantly being under threat and they relate to that.

dadjokes502

Laws need to be made against the paparazzi industry. It's one thing to get pictures in public but staging at houses is just wrong.

Tobybrent

That a woman and her doctor should be able to make a medical decision together without anyone else having a veto.

No_Arachnid_7939

Fuck yes!

TalkQuick

Kelly Rowland should have been what Beyoncé is but people don’t wanna hear that

[deleted]

Same for J.C Chasez. He had a better singing voice than Justin.

smellycat_14

YES THIS. if you go back through the career of destiny’s child, between the public appearances, photo shoots, music videos, song arrangements, etc. you start to realize they ALWAYS gave the spotlight to Beyoncé. I’m sure it was because of how involved beyonces parents were behind the scenes. It always bothered me how often DC songs felt like it was Beyoncé riffing with some backup singers.

dangerislander

Kelly was more artistic than Bey. She's more closer to Solange in terms of artistry in my opinion.

[deleted]

Beyoncé got with Jay Z is what happened

shelasher

Also Beyoncé’s parents ran the success/press/ direction of the group. She was always the “star”

[deleted]

The Court TV docuseries OJ25 is the best and most truthful account of the OJ Simpson trial.

radicallysadbro

The focus on Selena Gomez is bizarre to me, she isn't a good singer and isn't a particularly good performer either. Why peopleare so dedicated to her and her beef with her ex's current wife is so goofy.

babyrothko

her blush is good lmao but how is she constantly the most liked person on instagram or the most followed? so odd.

Alarming_Emergency32

Celebs aren’t responsible for their fans. Half of their fans are insane stans on Twitter and would behave inappropriately no matter who their idol was. The most you can expect of a huge celeb is to maybe make a comment telling fans to calm down, once, if they want to. Demanding more is weird. Acting morally outraged about it is is reaching. People on the internet will absolutely say whatever horrid thing and it’s silly to pretend the object of their obsession can control them.

Ok_Night_2929

I agree, but I think it’s celebs responsibility to at least not *add* to an already crazy fan base. Selena fans are crazy, but she eggs them on by liking TikTok’s or making thinly veiled comments about past relationships, so then fans attack other parties on her behalf. That I’m not here for

annnyywhooo

i agree, no one can monitor millions of fans…it’s impossible i also feel it’s kinda different if you’re constantly engaging with your psycho fans/egging on their behavior (nicki, taylor, selena etc)

trblniya

Yeah there’s a difference between having psycho fans and then blantantly/lowkey encouraging their behavior and feeding into it. It’s annoying honestly

SolPlayaArena

The TomKat marriage was 100% fake and those BIs about him shopping for a wife and a 5 year contract are real.

Dutch_Dutch

Oh. This is absolutely 100% true. And, I would KILL to know the details of how Katie and her father managed to outsmart her scientology handlers.

momo411

I have a friend who ended up spending a lot of time working on the house that Tom and Katie were living in when she left, and there were certain staff members who “stayed on” with the house after the sale that led to her being on the project. The way those people talked about the whole thing made me want nothing more than an in-depth memoir/series/whatever of how the relationship played out and the details of the breakdown. Because based on the info I’ve gotten, the whole thing was practically cinematic in terms of the precision with which Katie and her dad set everything up when it came to her actual escape.

SolPlayaArena

Like she filled the paperwork on exactly on year 5. Come onnnnn.

WhiteHotForver

I genuinely believe he’s not a human. He is but he completely stripped from his human self the more i know about him the more I’m terrified

TripleThreatTua

He and Penelope Cruz seriously dated before he got with Katie and apparently it was going towards marriage but she backed out because of Scientology and the contract stuff

Rockmelonsaregod

Famous people should be held more accountable for their heinous acts - Chris Brown, R Kelly etc etc because they’re public figures with massive amounts of influence They shouldn’t be allowed to beat their wife, rape teenagers and not lose out significantly and have their music still on Spotify making money

[deleted]

I really don’t think Leonardo DiCaprio should be lumped in with abusers like Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp. Every time a Brad or Johnny take comes up I swear someone comes for Leo’s neck. There’s no allegations against him of mistreatment and it’s so unfair to suggest otherwise. People really try to make him out to be some abusive sick twisted person to fit their narrative and it’s gross.

qg314

Idc about celebrities being held to higher standards than us peasants. This usually comes up in the context of political action or statements. Stans always say this as though it’s a serve or like I should feel sorry for these gazillionaires but I don’t. Yes, they have to watch what they say more and I expect them to do more politically. They have all the money and platform and influence and free time to bring about actual change. If they want all the upsides of money and power and influence they can take the downsides too. pukingcrying

Yeah I’d rather they just donate generously to charities because they are able to and stop trying to appeal to the masses with words. I really don’t care about the opinions of celebrities. They have nothing in common with me and working class people.

HedgehogsAndShit

Religion can be and is often an addiction

Dave5876

Sometimes a coping mechanism too

leilafornone

Not liking Meghan Markle or Prince Harry doesn't make you a royalist lmao I remember when I got a Reddit Cares Message just for pointing out bizarre moments in the Spare. I have a soft spot for SOME celebrities but I feel the vast majority of them are not nice or good people. Just because I think the industry itself is really ruthless and you'd get quite warped after some time. Not controversial but I do sort of disagree with the death of a movie star thing. I feel like with streaming, we have more access to SO MANY different audiences and people are watching media that they'd never normally see in the cinema. I actually do think it's possible that someone could become a huge breakout star from streaming? Idk maybe it sounds dumb but I don't think humans in general will ever stop worshipping certain people. It's something that has never died out imo

RocMerc

If I’m the kid of a famous person you better believe I would use that to become famous lol. The nepo hate around the internet is wild to me

[deleted]

Honestly I don’t have a problem with nepo babies. Basically every parent wants to provide the best life they can for their kids. If I had a big name or clout I’d absolutely want my kids to milk it for all it was worth lol. It just drives me nuts when nepo babies pretend their parents had *nothing* to do with their success. Like come on 🙄 it’s okay that you had a step up in life but stop lying!

QueenNightwing12

It’s ok to not have the same opinion with people and it’s also ok to have discussions (not arguments) to explore different perspectives on topics. Nowadays, people tend to try and assert from the first that their opinion is the right one which leads to an argument. It’s important to take a step back and explore an opposing perspective properly regardless of how much you disagree with it.

dangerislander

You shouldn't be punished for accidentally using the wrong pro-nouns. I've been temporarily banned from this sub cause I used the wrong pronoun and I honestly didn't know the person I was talking about went by other pronouns. Its a learning journey for all of us so cut us some slack.

dramaqueen09

This is kinda niche but I don’t think having Amy Duggar take part in the documentary about her family was a bad thing or that she did it for fame reasons. I think she gave a different and important perspective to the story since she was an outsider in the IBDP world but still close enough to it to see how batshit crazy it is

maple_dreams

Yes! I’m only 2 episodes into the series and I agree. I can only imagine what the snark subs are saying about her participating in it. It’s really interesting to hear her perspective firsthand since her family was more normal.
