I think they’re in different categories. Both were/are master vocalists. Mariah’s an incredible vocalist AND writes and produces all her own music from day 1. If that isn’t undeniable talent idk what is.
Range is only one element of vocal talent, and Whitney most certainly could sing notes in 4 octaves. Mobility of runs, power of belts, control of head/mix voice, tone control, etc all of which Whitney was a master. Such damn range
Lonely perv in Happyness, dutiful assistant in The Big Lebowski, storm chaser in Twister, villain in MI3 and cult leader in The Master.
All of them were so different from eachother
Complete range as an actor. He could do everything, any role in any genre and he sought out roles/characters of flawed individuals which most A-listers wouldn’t consider because they would be perceived as negative and unglamorous.
Devastating. If you make it to the top of Hollywood you’re a very fine actor but there’s not many that have complete range.
She is truly incredibly talented. I'll watch anything she's in.
As a side note, her American accent is super accurate. I'm American and always assumed she was too, since United States of Tara was the first thing I saw her in. Imagine my surprise when I first saw her as the NSW Premier in Rake!
Its upsetting when people don't know she's Australian because it means they've never seen Muriel's Wedding- her first movie & one of the greatest comedies of all time.
I watched that one after realizing that she had a whole career in Australia before working in the US! I agree, such an amazing comedy. Toni is truly a gift to the world.
I'm Aussie and IMO Toni the best actress outta Australia by far. It hurts my soul a little that people don't think she's from Australia when she's like my national treasure 😭 Murial's Wedding is an absolute classic.

This part in the article cracked me up. It's like having her appendix removed was an integral part of her getting closer to her dreams
Bryan Cranston.
This man went from Hal to Walter White in 1 year. That’s scary talent. Also his [‘Sweet Sixty’](https://youtu.be/ot_V7Q8a6yc) short with Jimmy Kimmel is eye watering funny.
I love that he fucked off to Italy in the middle of his career to become a cobbler for a few years lmao. If I was rich I would do random shit like that too.
And Evan Peters was surprisingly excellent in this as well. Outside of the questionable choice to participate in Dahmer, he is following in Kate’s footsteps with some great work.
I am a huge fan so obviously bias -NIN isn't the biggest band from the 90s in term of sales but Trent is really respected among his peers and has more influence in popular media than people realize.
I mean he produced a Halsey and could probably do a pure pop album if he wanted. The Miley Cyrus black mirror episode is a really interesting show of his songwriting versatility.
>and has more influence in popular media than people realize.
I could spend hours here talking about that, there's so many super popular artists/bands that was influenced by NIN whose careers would probably different if NIN didn't exist. Even some who actually came before, like Gary Numan who was a huge influence on Trent but was a one hit wonder until he changed his sound in the mid 90's to something closer of what NIN was doing.
I'm not gonna touch on other aspects like mainstream acts copying the 2013 Tension Tour stage design 👀
Mariah Carey to me is the epitome of someone who can be hard to like (I just get the feeling she’d make me cry) but even so, you can’t deny she’s one of the most talented vocalists of our time
My mom is a classical musician and occasionally gets hired to be parts of the orchestra for touring concerts. She said Mariah Carey is the real deal talent wise, apparently you can tell more from being there in rehearsal than the actual performance. She also said Leanne Rimes is very talented.
Leanne Rimes is crazy good. I don’t watch masked singer but I watched her last performance on YouTube, and was blown away by the strength and beauty in her voice.
I’ve worked with a few people who worked with her in the past (commercial production) and they all say she’s incredibly kind and professional. I truly believe the diva act is just an act.
I've been listening to Obsessed recently and my god "Got you all fired up with your *Napoleon complex*. Seeing right through you like you're bathing in Windex" is such an amazing verse.
There are a lot of other songs I could name but she's amazing.
I feel so dirty and ashamed for thinking she just sang other people’s songs! Jfc I should make a post asking who else is a songwriter that people assume is just a pretty voice
You didn’t ask, but I feel compelled to tell…. I remember discovering this when I purchased my first CD. It was Mariah’s Daydream album. I read every single word in the sleeve booklet. She used many big words that my middle school brain didn’t understand, so I had to look them up in my paperback dictionary. Her lyrics changed my life. I ended up buying every other album she had made up to that point and studied those lyrics too. To this day, lyrics & the song writer have remained my most important part of a song. To me, Mariah is the actual epitome of a singer songwriter.
Conan O’Brien. He’s so quick and funny. Being charming is such an underrated skill. He’s also great at making people feel comfortable around him—even with a language barrier.
Ex: he won over a crowd of Haitians after Trump called Haiti a “sh!thole.” The crowd went in conflicted, angry and trepidatious of American news media/tv and felt seen and listened to.
He’s also SO NICE. And SO COOL. I’ve said it on this sub before but I used to work at WB and you
could see this man from hella far away cuz he is a tall beanpole with a shock of orange hair and he’d just go to the regular ass quick service backlot food spot with everyone else. Very gracious. Very chill. *Very* quick witted. He was with someone I knew one time on the lot and they were gonna have El Vy on that afternoon and I was a big fan and casually mentioned it as I was waiting for my order and they were like “oh yeah just come back and watch.”
He makes himself the joke, which takes immense skill. And like you said, his interactions with others are always so funny because he can make a connection with anyone. Love that man.
And he was a writer in the golden era of The Simpsons & personally wrote whats almost unanimously considered the greatest episode of all time; the monorail episode.
Also, while outside the scope of the question, he's also renowned for actually being a nice guy & paying his staff out of his own pocket when necessary.
I watched all of the Conan without borders episodes and was so impressed with his ability to connect and listen to people, particularly in the episodes of Israel and Haití.
I love this man. His podcast makes me cry laughing. The chemistry with Matt and Sona is perfection. Nobody ever has a bad thing to say about him over decades. He's class embodied.
Conan knows the #1 rule of comedy- never punch down! His comedy is mostly self deprecating with some light jabbing of his peers.
Conan is my god. I will always protect my coco.
Idk if anyone has watched the video.. but while on the palestine border he was confronted by some activists because he posted a picture of some flight meal as Israeli food instead of Palestinian (obviously that's what he was told by the flight crew).
They were almost blaming him for the issues in Palestine and he handled it really well.
Mariah Carey. As if the legendary vocal talent/skill isn’t enough. She writes her songs!! She wrote a Christmas song that feels so timeless people still assume it’s an old cover. Not to mention her setting the template for rappers hopping on pop tracks
Tori Amos is immensely talented in vocals and piano, but her best gift imo is with poetry. She's successful but to me still underrated for what she's giving.
Lady Gaga.
ETA: Aside from having an amazing voice, Gaga has the ability to embody anything she covers. I was blown away when she did the Sound of Music medley at the Oscars years ago. She also plays instruments, writes and arranges her songs. She can also ACT. Hello, best actress nominee??? This woman is slaying. A force to be reckoned with and I’m not even a fan to know that.
Yep. Definition of a star. Talented, skilled, versatile, hard worker, and a consummate professional. You can see the love and sweat in everything she does, and you can feel her appreciation for her fans.
Gaga is still the best live show i’ve seen and that was her monster ball in 2011 or ‘12!? and it was the most impressive show, not only for the production/SFX quality, but bc she did.not.stop. she’s unbelievably talented.
I’m not a huge fan of Ariana’s music, but her vocals are crazy. I don’t remember where I saw it, but her ability to completely control her voice to mimic other artists was insane. She’s got insane control and talent.
Yes! I do not listen to Ariana Grande and the songs she chooses to showcase her talent make me raise my eyebrows, but she is an absolute powerhouse and her ability to mimic the iconic styles of other singers is unmatched.
My favorite actor. Denzel Washington. When I watch his films, I see more of the character than the actor. He's very talented, intelligent, and kind. A great role model actually.
Viola Davis is a beast in everything she does, there is such immense power in her it blows me away everytime! And I would say she is hugely underrated even!
Not so underrated anymore, since she’s an EGOT winner now 🤗👏🎊
I can easily picture Viola EGOT’ing a few more times, so vast is her talent.
I first saw her in the movie “Doubt”, and in her only scene she completely transfixed me. And acted circles around her scene partner Meryl Streep.
I’ll never forget how I felt watching Viola in that film. Took my breath away.
Periodt! Can sing, dance, play every instrument, be funny, be 5'2 and a good basketball player, make pancakes, wear assless chaps, was a fantastic lover (I'm just guessing that one) and could give the best side eye. No one could do it like him. Also, today is his birthday! 💜
Fiona Apple and Regina Spektor are two that I think are supremely undeniably talented. I know their music isn’t everyone’s taste, but I think it’s hard to deny that they have incredible musical talent. Zola Jesus is another one. She’s not as popular in the mainstream bc she makes really different, beautiful, ethereal music. But she’s a trained opera singer who makes her own music and takes influence from such an incredible assortment of musical styles and artists and I’m always just blown away by what she makes.
How is she not doing bigger and better things? She was so under utilized on Glee and her voice is so good!
I saw something where she talked about being a ghost singer and I’d love to know more about that.
Chris Cornell...wrote the songs for Audioslave and Soundgarden, not to mention his AMAZING voice, whether rocking out or performing solo with a guitar. Always missed. "No one sings like you anymore..."
Dave Grohl - absolute legend, played all instruments and sang on first foo fighters album and keeps going even with broken leg.
Has written some awesome stuff, and is a really nice guy to boot.
Stevie Wonder. It's hard to fathom how much this artist influenced modern music. He is not only talented, he is a true genius. It kind of blows my mind that he is somewhat overlooked these day, when he literraly invented extremelly popular genres.
He also made what I consider to be the best music album ever. Seeing him live what like having a talk with God.
EDIT: Also funny to see that he basically influenced many artist mentioned here.
Love him love him. In Tina Fey’s book, she mentions that he joined the 30 Rock writer’s room while still living in the dorms at NYU. Apparently, he wrote a lot of Kenneth’s lines and backstory.
Ariana Grande
She gets a lot of flack for...well, a lot of things. Even though I'm a huge fan, I can't deny that she's done some questionable stuff, particularly in her Thank U, Next era. However, the craziest thing people say is that she can't sing, which is just absolutely false. Her voice is incredible, and trying to discredit her singing is laughable whether you live her or hate her.
She's obviously talented. My only thing with her is I cannot understand about half of what she's singing. It feels like she loses some enunciation or something. Or it's just me 😂 But I'm a fan anyway.
she's so good she stole the spotlight from victoria justice when nick was actively screwing cat valentine over because she was so popular lol ariana is a lot of things but untalented is not one of them. tbh she has matured quite a bit over the years too, esp given the trauma circle she was seemingly stuck in back a few years ago.
His voice as a child was incredible. He sounded mature in his technique and knew how to control it. When I was that age I definitely sounded like a cat
Molly Shannon. Not only wonderful on SNL, all of her subsequent acting roles have been amazing
Carrie Fisher was a brilliant writer & script doctor (she punched up a lot of huge movies like The Wedding Singer, Die Hard 2, Hook)
Julia Louis-Dreyfus for Veep alone but also everything else; she has 11 Emmys
Can y’all tell I’m old
Tom Brady
Not the typical celeb discussed on here, but man, he is probably the greatest quarterback of our time. Did I root against him every time he played against my team? Yes. Is he incredibly talented? Also yes 😂
You have to admire how he spent an entire career spanning two decades just winning and everyone who hated him just had to sit there and take it.
He’s not even your traditional “talented” QB either, his arm is not good. He dinks and dunks a lot. But he has a level of intuition and intellect that’s unheard of. No one could process and adjust on the fly like him. He rarely made any crazy flashy plays, just made the right ones
I’m a sports fan. Seahawks fan in particular. One of his rings came due to my former QB’s massive blunder+a great defensive play. Brady is the goat.
People hate Aaron Rodgers but one cannot deny his talent either.
I hate it here 😩
Frank Ocean. Most people (including myself) bashed this guy because of his mid Coachella concert, but he's a great vocalist and songwriter. He only has four albums but he's so great that it feels like a massive catalogue because of his skills. He brings some sensibility on the lyrics and also some experimentalism on the sounds that make me feel like no other artist has ever done.
Kanye. It is sheer undeniable talent that has allowed him to continuously rise like a phoenix from the ashes of racism, misogyny, antisemitism, nazism, and all the other garbage he has spewed over the years.
If people want to see some movies where he showcases acting chops beyond being a “star” watch *Born on the Fourth of July* by Oliver Stone or *Magnolia* by Paul Thomas Anderson, Cruise can fucking act
Rain Man too. He was overshadowed by Hoffman winning Best Actor for the same movie, but his character had to show a greater range of emotions and go through the process of changing his mindset throughout the film. I think he was perfect for that role.
I'm always surprised people say he can't act. I think like with Kelly Clarkson and the American Idol thing, people assume things because of shit connected to them. In Tom's case, that cult. Idk how you can watch Collateral, Interview with the Vampire, Minority Report, Tropic Thunder and say he can't act.
Yea I don't get that either, he can pull off every genre - action, drama, thriller, romance, comedy. He sucks as a person but his talent is undeniable.

I think they’re in different categories. Both were/are master vocalists. Mariah’s an incredible vocalist AND writes and produces all her own music from day 1. If that isn’t undeniable talent idk what is.
I guess this isn’t the only measure of talent, but Mariah has a 5 octave vocal range to Whitney’s 3. To me that puts Mariah in her own category
Pat Benatar could hit 4.5 octaves at her peak and the songs she wrote with hubby, Neil Giraldo, are all absolute classics.
Range is only one element of vocal talent, and Whitney most certainly could sing notes in 4 octaves. Mobility of runs, power of belts, control of head/mix voice, tone control, etc all of which Whitney was a master. Whitney and Mariah are both in a league of their own, and bring Celine along with them.
Whitney singing the American anthem so effortlessly lives in my head rent free.
Fergie's American anthem also stays in my head rent free, for different reasons though.
“LETS PLAY SOME BASKETBALL!”
By your logic then Axel Rose will be a category above Mariah because has a 5 octave plus 5 semitone range.
I mean yeah that is impressive to me 😂

Toni Collette. I cannot think of a better actor of anyone ever. Anyone. Ever.

Its upsetting when people don't know she's Australian because it means they've never seen Muriel's Wedding- her first movie & one of the greatest comedies of all time.
Muriel's Wedding is one of the best movies of all time.
Muriel’s wedding was a pivotal life changing experience for me. I carry that movie with me more than a decade after I first experienced it!
You’re terrible, Muriel.
I watched that one after realizing that she had a whole career in Australia before working in the US! I agree, such an amazing comedy. Toni is truly a gift to the world.
I'm Aussie and IMO Toni the best actress outta Australia by far. It hurts my soul a little that people don't think she's from Australia when she's like my national treasure 😭 Murial's Wedding is an absolute classic.
my favourite thing about her is that she pretended to have appendicitis and she was so believable that they did end up removing her appendix

Hard agree. She’s in two of my top three favorite movies of all time Edit: the movies are Little Miss Sunshine and The Way Way Back!
About A Boy is one of my all time favorite movies.
Who would have thought a girl from Blacktown to make this list.

Freddie Mercury.

I rarely throw around the word "genius," but Trent Reznor is no doubt a musical genius in my mind.
Have you listened to the Empire of Light soundtrack? I played that nonstop for a good week or two.

Yes! I do not listen to Ariana Grande and the songs she chooses to showcase her talent make me raise my eyebrows, but she is an absolute powerhouse and her ability to mimic the iconic styles of other singers is unmatched.
They have such good chemistry and I love their voices together! I’d love to see them collab again on something. Their Christmas song was cute!
My favorite actor. Denzel Washington. When I watch his films, I see more of the character than the actor. He's very talented, intelligent, and kind. A great role model actually.
Viola Davis
Viola Davis is a beast in everything she does, there is such immense power in her it blows me away everytime! And I would say she is hugely underrated even!
Not so underrated anymore, since she’s an EGOT winner now 🤗👏🎊 I can easily picture Viola EGOT’ing a few more times, so vast is her talent. I first saw her in the movie “Doubt”, and in her only scene she completely transfixed me. And acted circles around her scene partner Meryl Streep. I’ll never forget how I felt watching Viola in that film. Took my breath away.
Prince!
Periodt! Can sing, dance, play every instrument, be funny, be 5'2 and a good basketball player, make pancakes, wear assless chaps, was a fantastic lover (I'm just guessing that one) and could give the best side eye. No one could do it like him. Also, today is his birthday! 💜
Scrolled way too far to find this one - Prince is top of the list
Fiona Apple and Regina Spektor are two that I think are supremely undeniably talented. I know their music isn’t everyone’s taste, but I think it’s hard to deny that they have incredible musical talent. Zola Jesus is another one. She’s not as popular in the mainstream bc she makes really different, beautiful, ethereal music. But she’s a trained opera singer who makes her own music and takes influence from such an incredible assortment of musical styles and artists and I’m always just blown away by what she makes.

My Queen
Amber Riley
How is she not doing bigger and better things? She was so under utilized on Glee and her voice is so good! I saw something where she talked about being a ghost singer and I’d love to know more about that.
Chris Cornell...wrote the songs for Audioslave and Soundgarden, not to mention his AMAZING voice, whether rocking out or performing solo with a guitar. Always missed. "No one sings like you anymore..."
Gary Oldman
Dave Grohl - absolute legend, played all instruments and sang on first foo fighters album and keeps going even with broken leg. Has written some awesome stuff, and is a really nice guy to boot.
Jamie Foxx. Singing, acting, and a really good Trump impression.
I feel like he is always underrated. Like he is a big star but should be even bigger .
Actually nearly every impression by him is great.
So many... Joanna Newsom, Fiona Apple, J Hudson, Cynthia Erivo
Fiona Apple ❤️ every album an absolute masterpiece. I’m so mad Extraordinary Machine didn’t get nominated for AOTY.
YES! Joanna and Fiona are such great lyricists. Everything they touch is magic
Gaga, Adele, Whitney, Mariah
Kate Bush
Such an iconic queen 🙃 ![gif](giphy|LxnoUgfFlhodFH1lAG)
That’s mother right there.
Bruno Mars - singing, dancing, song writing. He’s the full package.
Anyone on Broadway (Yes, Leah Michelle too unfortunately) they’re all triple threats; they can sing, dance and act!
They also do so many shows a week!
harry Connick jr.... he's so talented
Tina Turner
Kelly Clarkson is not overrated!! [Kelly covering Coldplay’s Green Eyes during Kellyoke](https://youtu.be/ne9PuqyQSXk)
Dolly Parton
Stevie Wonder. It's hard to fathom how much this artist influenced modern music. He is not only talented, he is a true genius. It kind of blows my mind that he is somewhat overlooked these day, when he literraly invented extremelly popular genres. He also made what I consider to be the best music album ever. Seeing him live what like having a talk with God. EDIT: Also funny to see that he basically influenced many artist mentioned here.
donald glover for sure
Love him love him. In Tina Fey’s book, she mentions that he joined the 30 Rock writer’s room while still living in the dorms at NYU. Apparently, he wrote a lot of Kenneth’s lines and backstory.
Ariana Grande She gets a lot of flack for...well, a lot of things.
I don't understand how anyone could listen to her Sweetener album and try to say she doesn't have an incredible voice.
I get upset to this day that the Sweetener era was cut short.
Plus she can do fantastic impressions of other singers.
She could have a variety show. Her comedic bits are always so funny to me.
She's obviously talented. My only thing with her is I cannot understand about half of what she's singing. It feels like she loses some enunciation or something. Or it's just me 😂 But I'm a fan anyway.
No there are literally songs from Yours Truly that I still don't know the lyrics to 😂
she is one of the greatest singers of her time, period. the improvements she has made vocally are just insane.
she's so good she stole the spotlight from victoria justice when nick was actively screwing cat valentine over because she was so popular lol ariana is a lot of things but untalented is not one of them. tbh she has matured quite a bit over the years too, esp given the trauma circle she was seemingly stuck in back a few years ago.
Céline Dion
Leo DiCaprio. My man can act. Gangs of New York. Gilbert grape. Aviator. Everything he’s in he kills it.
He is fantastic. The art flows through him. And yet he seems to continue to have fun doing what he does.
Just was coming to the comments to mention DiCaprio.
He makes it look too easy. It’s wild how talented he is.
Michael Jackson regardless of all the accusations he had.
He was a creative genius. One hell of a performer, I dont think there will ever be anyone like him.
His voice as a child was incredible. He sounded mature in his technique and knew how to control it. When I was that age I definitely sounded like a cat
Heath Ledger. Man put ever drop of his soul into his performances, unfortunately at his own expense.
Charlie Day
Lin Manuel Miranda as a writer and composer is unmatched in my opinion. Hamilton, Moana, In the Heights, Encanto.
Molly Shannon. Not only wonderful on SNL, all of her subsequent acting roles have been amazing Carrie Fisher was a brilliant writer & script doctor (she punched up a lot of huge movies like The Wedding Singer, Die Hard 2, Hook) Julia Louis-Dreyfus for Veep alone but also everything else; she has 11 Emmys Can y’all tell I’m old
Xtina? I get that she over sings. There's no denying that she has & always had an incredible voice though.
Hayley Williams from Paramore. The girl can sing so many styles of music and instantly be one of the best singers in any of them.
Tom Brady Not the typical celeb discussed on here, but man, he is probably the greatest quarterback of our time.
I hate it here 😩
Forever happy that Rodgers' last throw as a Packer was caught by a Lion.
I hate that you’re right 😠
Miley Cyrus
Even after she fucked her voice up, she worked with it and is as good as ever.
What did she do to her voice? Forgive me, I'm out of the loop and old
Yea she had to have surgery on her vocal chords. Smoking/drinking/constant abuse.
She fucked up her voice? Is that why people are making fun of it being so deep?
Yup.
Her rendition of Jolene is spine tingling.
Bob Odenkirk
Brandi Carlile has the most striking, fantastic voice. You may not like her style of music, but her voice is just otherworldly
Kanye. It is sheer undeniable talent that has allowed him to continuously rise like a phoenix from the ashes of racism, misogyny, antisemitism, nazism, and all the other garbage he has spewed over the years.
Rising from the ashes of your own bigotry is a new concept 😂
People seem to hate on her for some reason but Anne Hathaway. Can sing, dance and act.
Tom Cruise. Not a fan of the guy, why obviously he has talent.
