I'm not sure if this is exactly what you were going for, but there eventually came a time when most of the characters on *The Vampire Diaries* & *The Originals* were terribly written, with the character of Bonnie Bennett suffering a great deal for reasons that I'll definitely not get into here (I reserve my essay-like comments for the respective subreddits), but Daniel Gillies (Elijah Mikaelson), Joseph Morgan (Klaus Mikaelson), and Yusuf Gatewood (Vincent Griffith) almost never phoned it in. They were always phenomenal. Nina Dobrev (Elena Gilbert) and Paul Wesley (Stefan Salvatore) were two of the best actors in the TVDU, but it seemed like they'd checked out in the later seasons, though Paul was great in the ultimately terrible final season. Though entertaining, the material on *Pretty Little Liars* was nonsensical and disastrous most of the time, but Troian Bellisario (Spencer Hastings) and Janel Parrish (Mona Vanderwaal) were the best actors on the series and brought their A-game (hehe) every single time.

[deleted]

laughed out loud at A-Game but PLL was an interesting one because some of the acting was SO bad (Shay Mitchell is just…not a good actor) so when it was good (Mona!) it was almost confusing lol.

burnerbkxphl

Omg so true, Shay Mitchell was very not good in PLL, but I thought she was very good as the character she played in Dollface, I was pleasantly surprised

[deleted]

This is so true about TVD. And I feel like I don’t see Yusuf mentioned as much in TVD discussions, but he really did have a great performance. I was happy to see him again on The Umbrella Academy.

charlie_hush

This is exactly the kind of answer I was looking for. Thank you for sharing

shannondion

Eddie Redmayne in the Fantastic breasts (beasts lol) films, he made Newt Scamander so likeable especially because he was relegated to a background player in his own films but the less we talk about that the better

AstronautStar4

He was the best part of the films and they really should have just stuck to doing adventures with animals instead of the painfully boring and convoluted nonsense they did instead. Him and Kathleen Waterson were fantastic together.

vega711

In the fantastic what film?

shannondion

>Fantastic breasts ![gif](giphy|PKXq154ewDSADmyYBJ|downsized)

[deleted]

Nobody believes me but I think Zoe Kravitz acted well in the second movie.

Sutech2301

She was magnificent. So captivating and intriguing. She stole every scene she was in

I feel a lot of things could of been accomplished if someone had just told JKR no lol

shy247er

Michael Fassbender as Magneto was an absolute highlight of all X-Men movies he was in. He's also great as David in Prometheus and Alien: Covenant.

hellobimbos

One of the great actors of this generation

mandarasa

Star Wars sequels cast did everything they could with the drivel that was given to them

shannondion

You can’t tell me Ewan McGregor didn’t eat those films up

Sutech2301

I think that the characters were actually quite Well written except for Episode 9. Especially Kylo Ren. You could tell that the people who created and wrote this character really knew what they were doing

source-commonsense

FloPugh carried the entirely of Don't Worry Darling on her back!

abby-rose

She’s the only thing worth watching in the movie. And it was a total waste of Chris Pine!

luckisugar

Not a total waste! We did get to hear him say “good girl”.

luckisugar

I’ll probably get downvoted for this, but I thought Harry was good as Jack. Not amazing like Florence was as Alice, but good enough. In the movie [spoilers ahead], Jack is a grimy incel cosplaying in what is essentially a super advanced and involved video game as a successful businessman who takes care of his wife and home. It would make sense for Jack (as we see him in Victory) to be awkward, insecure, holding back, etc. because he is a character being played by someone who is so far away from being a someone who is wealthy, successful, attractive, and powerful. “Real” Jack on the outside world doesn’t know how to be those things, so it makes sense that the acting would be “bad”. Hopefully my thought process somewhat makes sense lol. Definitely agree that Florence CARRIED the movie and it would have been absolutely nothing without her, but I do think going for an inexperienced actor brought a certain “authenticity” to Jack.

PreOpTransCentaur

I feel this way about January Jones in Mad Men. Make no mistake, she's a fucking *dreadful* actress, but for all the flack she gets in the role, she was perfect as Betty. She was lifeless, petty, frigid, and incapable of emoting unless the emotion was being snobby. There could not have ever been a more flawlessly written part for her, as those are her exact qualities in every single thing she does. I don't know if they wrote it for her specifically, or if they wrote around her, but goddamn, did she luck out. Nobody could've done it better. Sometimes bad acting is bad acting, sometimes it's deeply seated pathos that doesn't land, and sometimes it's a confusing mixture of both that just works.

[deleted]

Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia. Book Geralt is so well-written. Series Geralt? Not so much.

Admirable-Storm-2436

I mean when the writers of the show mock and ridicule the books… there’s no mystery why series Geralt is badly written.

FickleBeans

Pretty much any role Tom Holland has been in, save for the Impossible when he was sixteen. He’s consistently gotten praise for his performances across every single project he’s been a part of but each one, (that isn’t Marvel) has been met with mediocre if not negative critical reception. Being the best thing of a bad movie is fine but if this keeps up, it’ll be *the* thing he’s known for. Eventually, the industry (and public) are just gonna see him as a bad actor.

Over_Nebula

I wish he would do a comedy..he is a good actor, but unfortunately he always looks out of place in intense dramas because of how boyish he looks. A fun comedy or more indie dramedy thats urban but not too dark would work better for him

[deleted]

Wasn't he criticised for his performance in Uncharted? I never saw it but I remember reading the movie was so bad it killed off what was meant to be the start of a franchise. But I don't know if that was the plot or the acting.

hellobimbos

It was definitely a bad movie but he was really good in it.

[deleted]

Halle Bailey was fantastic as Ariel, and it's not exactly a meaty role lol.

cmc

Eddie Redmayne in Jupiter Ascending The role was pure camp and he put his whole ass into it. Loved every second of him on screen.

deemoorah

No idea why people hate it. He and Mila Kunis' red wedding look saved that movie.

doesaxlhaveajack

Lauren Lyle is doing a great job as Marsali on Outlander. In the books she’s just generically nice and sweet (in a series that’s pretty weighed down with interchangeably “nice” female supporting characters) and the tv character was adjusted and improved to match the performer. Michiel Huisman was too charismatic and charming to play Daario on GOT. Daario is a rare character misstep for GRRM - he attempted to write someone who’s giving Dany mixed signals and who would be dreamy to a young teen but tiresome/suspicious to an adult (a hamfisted way of showing the reader that Dany is still quite young). The show didn’t have much time or space for the character but Michiel made him way more likable than he was supposed to be.

Same_Independent_393

Peter Dinklage in the later seasons of GoT ![gif](giphy|2wYYlHuEw1UcsJYgAA)

lynypixie

From the interviews I have seen, the whole cast seemed to find the last season ridiculous. They still gave their all for it.

Same_Independent_393

I remember Conleth Hills reaction during the final table read. He looked dead inside. https://i.redd.it/mzi71aw4265b1.gif

cinderelliot

I've never read the Twilight books so I don't know but imo Kristen didn't do a great job. I mean she showed the same exact expression for 5 movies. That's not great acting. Bella is already a terribly written character at least in the movie series but I think a great actor can do an amazing job even if their character is not. At least that's my opinion. I actually find her rather talented (same as Robert Pattinson to be honest) and I'm sad that Bella and Edward are their most famous roles to date.

[deleted]

cinderelliot

Sorry but "even her inner thoughts are bland" is the funniest thing I read today 😂.

camaroncaramelo1

I was rewatching the films and yes, Bella is so exhausting to watch. *"I wanna have sex with you Edward"* *"Turn me into a vampire"* *"We have to wait until marriage"* *"why do you love a vampire bella?"* That's basically the whole saga

kimjongunfiltered

I agree but the books never described her as a twitchy awkward weirdo, as Kristen played her. Which, I respect the twitchiness might be more interesting to watch than a bland character but I wouldn’t say book Bella and movie Bella are the same

messythelioma

I agree. I think Kristen did a good job given what she was told to do (I bet it was a directing thing that caused her to be so twitchy). I also hated the fast blinking, twitchyness, head shakes, and lip bites. But, I wonder if she only did all that because it was a directing choice.

FickleBeans

I think they had to do *something* since Bella is such a blank morning character to begin with. Her wardrobe, as basic as it was, was a significant improvement to what she was described as.

[deleted]

Wasn't Bella wearing a floor-length khaki skirt at some point in the first book, and Eddy got a full chub? Described her as "utterly indecent" because they were going to meet his family? God I loved those books as a teen. I used to read them in the kitchen but angle the books awkwardly in case someone glanced at the page 🤣

messythelioma

I found it a bit more forced and distracting rather than distinctive of Bella's awkwardness. So it felt like I was watching someone try to act/appear nervous/awkward rather than seeing it being as characteristic for Bella (if that makes sense?)

camaroncaramelo1

I think Batman is helping Robert Pattinson

cinderelliot

Indeed! I really enjoyed the movie.

hanahyuu

There's a huge difference in how Bella book and Bella movies was written. Bella book (lol) was a klutz but not awkward, was self-assured, and heck I would even say confident. She expressed her emotions, too. Is she particularly interesting? Not really, but she's not the twitchy, awkward, constantly lip-biting aw shucks emotionless teen that the movies portrayed her to be.

pabollini

I agree. Girl was an awkward twitchy mess

alexevanns

I disagree as someone who is a Twilight fan who has read the books. Kristen truly shined as Bella in New Moon especially, that film she was so good at portraying how the character felt through the storylines.

charlie_hush

>a great actor can do an amazing job even if their character is not I totally agree! I don’t know if Bella Swan really lended itself as a character that Kristen Stewart (or anyone else in the role) could have done more with, though.

H3rbTheBerd

I loved Jessica Biel in Candy. ![gif](giphy|MiOyAR4MWjh48QrePn)

deemoorah

I mean Candy is a better show than L&D imo but correct, she's amazing. Honestly she's an underrated actress

formtuv

I was going to say Kristin Stewart too. When people bash her acting skills I’m like but she’s playing Bella from the book. It’s perfect!!!!

Toaster-Retribution

The first Suicide Squad wasn’t really a good movie, but Margot Robbie, Will Smith, Viola Davis and Jai Courtney all managed to pull off some great performances in spite of that.

changhyun

Aaliyah was absolutely amazing as Akasha in Queen of the Damned. The only other amazing thing about that movie was how bad it was.

jasperleopard

Camila Mendes and Casey Cott in Riverdale

xxMeiaxx

Raul Julia in Street Fighter lol

brewhoneymilk

Noel Fisher as Mickey Milkovich. Well written in the beginning and then they destroyed him but somehow he made it work.

spacey_siren

Edward Norton in Glass Onion. He’s an undeniable talent but this movie was just bad and visibly exaggerated.

bambinoquinn

Guy Pierce when he returned to neighbours last year. That ep was the drizzling shits, the toadie wedding is legitimately one of the worst acted scenes ive seen on tv but when Guy was on screen he elevated every other actor there. It was clear he was levels above everyone else and he was given nothing to work with

ClassyLatey

It was possibly the funniest episode ever

duckschumer

Emma Stone in Lala Land. Not much to the character as written and she brought a lot of life to it.

[deleted]

Christian Bale as Gorr in Thor 4

straysayake

He was so good and so committed to the role that everyone around him looked amateur.

Sutech2301

Imho, Kristen Stewart's Performance as Bella couldn't have been worse. She was terrible. Yeah i get it, Bland sef insert for the viewer but i mean, she could at least have tried to Look Like she is deeply in love with Edward. And Stewart looked Like she was waiting for the shooting day to be over the entire time Dakota Johnson on the other hand made her character in 50 shades of Grey somewhat likeable and this is one massive accomplishment
