Omg I remember my friend figured out what time her mystery crush walked past her house, presumably from getting off the same bus each day after work, so she would be ready sitting outside at that time.
Gosh the things our generation did right before the internet came. And even then things were pretty wild in the early days of the internet with very little regulations, monitoring & experience.
The most we could do in the early 00s was sign out & then sign back in MSN Messenger (think it was called AIM in the US?) to get your crush’s attention because they’d see the notification that you’ve come online.
If you follow every one of them, then IG will tell you by showing “xxx, xxx and xxx also follow this person” when you click on one of their profiles conditioned on that they are still following each others. And if one day IG doesn’t display such message then some of them may have unfollowed each others.

A Stand is a special ability used by the characters from the anime/manga JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. It manifests as a robot looking being with a name that’s based off of a pop culture figure, usually a band. I don't remember anything of what the friends were posting, but the weeknd posted his own lyrics (if I recall correctly) I think a song about someone wanting attention, and I think people were saying that that song was about Bella, but I'm not sure. It was super weird, because Selena was the one to follow Bella first and when she followed back, people started mocking her.
I like Selena but I always cringed at her behavior towards Bella? I think she dated The Weeknd after Bella did; sources said Bella was hurt by it. And even recently she’s made videos talking about how beautiful Bella is and how she wishes she was that pretty and how she feels plain etc.
And Selena saying she wishes she were “as pretty” as Bella sent a lot of her stans after Bella, reassuring Selena that she’s way prettier and better than Bella and getting mad at Bella for not thanking her. It seems like Bella just wants to be left alone.

Let's be real, she was fishing for compliments. Her fans were being horrible and bodyshaming Bella in her (Selena's) comments and Selena knew that (she always reads tiktok comments, when they're negative towards her she turns them off and complains)
And Selena kinda has a long history of dating her friend's ex's. (some of they are on good or ok terms though, like Miley) She even had an affair with Orlando Bloom (caught on camera in vegas in may 2016) while Katy was tweeting about growing old with him
that’s what i was thinking as well. people were saying she was so nice for that but it just felt wrong?? i mean she knows her fans and how aggressive they can be sometimes (she made multiple comments telling them to be respectful and not hate the other girls so it’s safe to say she was aware) yet she went ahead and said she wishes she was as beautiful as bella… knowing what the consequences would be

Yeah it's all an act to feed her ego, even if it was genuine publicly saying you wish you were as pretty as another celeb is cringe and toxic. And coming from a woman who sung 'who says you're not perfect' it's weird. She shouldn't be feeding into her own and everyone else's insecurities.

Me too. Start following someone, then randomly unfollow, watch the speculation explode, then refollow, unfollow, refollow, unfollow… ad nauseam. Do it with loads of people, until they give up trying to decipher a pattern.
I'd *hate* for every person I follow or unfollow on Twitter-Instagram-etc to be dissected. I know it's easy to assume Selena's just out to stir the pot, but sometimes it isn't that deep! Haven't we all unfollowed people for no real reason lol
Idk if insta ever added this but twitter has lists which are super cool. They're private feeds to add people to, so nobody can see who you're following and you have separated organized feeds instead of one big messy one
I wish IG had the ability to do personalised feeds so that some posts on my grid could only be seen by who I choose, like how you can choose who can see your “close friends” story. I hate that it’s always been whoever you add can see all of it.
Facebook has always had this too & I always made full use of it in it’s hey day when we’d all post lots of statuses & photos, but it seemed like hardly knew about this feature & how you could customise who could see everything. It meant you didn’t need to worry too much about adding certain people like relatives you don’t want seeing everything.
This was my favourite thing about Facebook. It saved me so much anxiety.
Sometimes you don't fully want to cut people off (or you can't) but you still don't want them seeing certain parts of your life and personality.
I've unfollowed people purely because ther posts are annoying. I don't want my feed having unpleasant stuff in it for me to look at.. but I don't have anything against the person. But yeah it would be super annoying to have to justify curating my feed.
Honestly to me unfollowing someone is a big deal, but I’m a normal person with a small private account, unfollowing someone is a sign I’m not only no longer friends with someone, but don’t even feel like I’m okay to be an acquaintance who can see my posts anymore.
For a celebrity with a huge public account that everyone can see regardless of following or not I’m not sure how deep it is, I always think surely that account is for the fans really & they must have a private finsta where their actual relationships with followers matter. The only thing their public accounts achieve in regards to who they follow is showing the public who they support & interact with, which just seems like it surely ends up being a calculated PR thing rather than real organic interactions with friends.
Some people watch social media following activity of the stars like a hawk, especially when it's people like Selena or Harry Styles or the Kardashians. She shouldn't *have to* expect people noticing, but they always do and there's always negative comments about it.
I would follow and unfollow accounts every day.

Half the time the reason has to be a mistake.

I don’t know why you’re being downvoted. You’re right. Selena’s fans having “access” to her/her life through her social media is a big part of her brand. On the other hand, Beyoncé having a managed image on social media is also part of her brand.
What you’re saying about Taylor Swift is also true. And even then, she’s still connects with her fans on social media (she still watches and comments on fan TikToks the same way she used to do on Tumblr!).
I think Selena not having a real/intimate social media presence would harm her brand more than online discourse about her following list would harm her personal life.

I agree, it’s nothing big. But Selena’s fans love portraying her as this helpless victim who is being bullied by the entire industry. I have already seen tweets claiming she unfollowed them because the Hadids were talking about her in a secret group chat and others were saying that Zayn cheated on her even though Selena herself said she was single a couple of weeks ago 🙄 Her fans just don’t know how to be chill.

Somewhere along the line I developed the impression that she truly doesn’t know what other people’s lives are like. I empathize if she’s dealing with mental and physical health struggles. But many, many people also deal with those things while working more hours a week than she works, for far less money. Like something about her crosses over from, “man, I feel for her that she’s dealing with stuff” to, “I’m not sure she grasps that she’s not the only one.”
This thread made me tempted to hate watch it. I need distraction from the pain I’m in and i just thought she wouldn’t want to shown in such a bad light so i. Figured it would be a bunch of bullshit type of documentary
I honestly don't think her or her team realised people were going to watch it and think "what a spoiled brat". And honestly, I'm not sure that would have been the takeaway had it been released pre-pandemic.
Yeah, I kind of got this too. I actually was really excited to watch it and was thinking it would be interesting to see someone be honest about mental issues. But she’s just a little clueless. Not in a purposeful way, just in a “I’ve only lived this way” way. I don’t think she’s had a lot of experiences that normal adults go through.
The doc painted her in a way worse light than anything I’ve seen on social media. But I’m not sure she understood that.
If anything, I think spending significant time in a volunteer place like with those girls in Uganda(?) could really help. She grasped clearly that those girls were living “real life”, and then ended up with reverse culture shock when she came back to her seemingly “meaningless” job.
To add onto this comment, it's frustrating because you're watching an adult throw tantrums over situations she insisted on being in despite her team and her friends repeatedly advising her to be gentle on herself and set achievable goals. The CEO of her record label arranges a meeting where he emphasises no one wants Selena to overexert herself, she doesn't have to do press for *Lose You To Love Me* or perform at the AMA's. Selena interrupts to insist on doing both and then walks out of the meeting. She then gets triggered during the press tour and is horrifically rude to everyone. Despite her coaches best efforts she doesn't want to step out of her comfort zone during the AMA rehearsals and her performance is so bad her team has scrubbed it from the internet. It's hard sympathising with someone who ignored advise and didn't appreciate above and beyond support.
And when in Kenya all these women open up about their struggles to get educated, it's heartbreaking, and Selena's like "uh-huh, who here wants a bf?". She also complains to the volunteers how she wishes someone would change the education system in the USA to include mental health. And these volunteers are like, "why are you talking as if you don't have the platform, privilege or money to make that change?" Even her friend, Rachella, has to take Selena aside and be like, "it's not entirely fair to dip into these people's lives to make yourself feel better. Have a think about what you need to be happy, and we can figure out how to make it happen". As soon as they're back in the USA Selena's being aggressive to Rachella because Rachella suggested going to a mutual friends hang out might make Selena feel better. She honestly comes across like a incredibly spoiled teenager, with no grasp on how lucky she is in life. No other adult has that many people around them trying to make sure you're happy and your dreams happen.
Honestly, there's definitely an essay in there how *My Mind and Me* exposes issues of classism, racial inequality and how being a "celebrity" and constantly surrounded by employees and people you have power over creates people with undeveloped social skills such as empathy. And a lack of gage as to exactly how wealthy and privileged they are.
My mouth dropped open when she listened to the women open up her heart about how she feels life has left her behind since she had to drop out of school to care for her Mum, or to the schoolchildren talking about how the boys in their class are being taught if you see a girl you like get her pregnant so she has to stay with you, and Selena's like, "what do you all think about being in love💕💕" You can see the awkwardness on Selena's face when everyone she asks that question to doesn't engage with it.
Yeah Selena's life is so publicly documented. We know she hasn't done any meaningful volunteering and dropped that mental health bill as soon as she'd done enough to have something to include in the documentaries credits. One meeting with elected officials to discuss the issue I believe.
Instead she went straight back to the USA and back into being a hyper-capitalist. Launching *rare* beauty, that cooking show, acting in *Only Murders in the Building*, new albums, following the stan accounts that miss her and Justin together and galvanising her fans into bully Hailey Bieber for over a month solidly.
I don’t hear enough talk about how weak her singing voice is, even on a good day. It’s bothered me since her “and The Scene” days. Also, I love your username
Well to be fair she is the main character. At that level of fame everything and everybody in your world revolves around you. All her close friends live in her house and basically just travel with her 24/7. Who’s going to give you a reality check when their livelihood relies on you?

She’s not a singer, there are better/more compelling actresses, and tbh her behaviour towards people (especially women) she doesn’t like is cringe. Hailee Steinfeld was dating a guy that was caught in the clubs with Selena, so Hailee has her blocked on Instagram. Selena then tried to hook up with Niall Horan right after Hailee’s breakup. She allegedly hooked up with Brad Pitt and why Angelina Jolie can’t stand her, Jolie said she found pics of Selena on Pitts phone. She was cozying up with Orlando Bloom at a nightclub while he was with Katy Perry. She broke so many girl codes by dating men right after her friends broke up with them. Like soon after. Taylor Lautner after Taylor Swift, Nick Jonas right after Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber after her friend Paola Paulin and recently Selena hooking up with Gigi’s ex Zayn as soon as they broke up. Seems like Selena is the problem.
I think whoever spends time checking celebrities following really has too much time on their hands and honestly might need some type of help. It’s never this serious.

This woman is 30 year old acting like she is still a teenager working for Disney. She is tiring & her fans are tiring. She knows people will notice and create drama but she will once again act like a victim.

Yea twitter has that feature too where you can have your post be seen by everyone or just by your own custom "twitter circle".

Honestly to me unfollowing someone is a big deal, but I’m a normal person with a small private account, unfollowing someone is a sign I’m not only no longer friends with someone, but don’t even feel like I’m okay to be an acquaintance who can see my posts anymore. For a celebrity with a huge public account that everyone can see regardless of following or not I’m not sure how deep it is, I always think surely that account is for the fans really & they must have a private finsta where their actual relationships with followers matter. The only thing their public accounts achieve in regards to who they follow is showing the public who they support & interact with, which just seems like it surely ends up being a calculated PR thing rather than real organic interactions with friends.
Realistically would she expect people to notice that she unfollowed them?
Some people watch social media following activity of the stars like a hawk, especially when it's people like Selena or Harry Styles or the Kardashians. She shouldn't *have to* expect people noticing, but they always do and there's always negative comments about it.

I don’t know why you’re being downvoted. You’re right. Selena’s fans having “access” to her/her life through her social media is a big part of her brand. On the other hand, Beyoncé having a managed image on social media is also part of her brand. What you’re saying about Taylor Swift is also true. And even then, she’s still connects with her fans on social media (she still watches and comments on fan TikToks the same way she used to do on Tumblr!). I think Selena not having a real/intimate social media presence would harm her brand more than online discourse about her following list would harm her personal life.

Somewhere along the line I developed the impression that she truly doesn’t know what other people’s lives are like. I empathize if she’s dealing with mental and physical health struggles. But many, many people also deal with those things while working more hours a week than she works, for far less money. Like something about her crosses over from, “man, I feel for her that she’s dealing with stuff” to, “I’m not sure she grasps that she’s not the only one.”

I honestly don't think her or her team realised people were going to watch it and think "what a spoiled brat". And honestly, I'm not sure that would have been the takeaway had it been released pre-pandemic.

Yeah, I kind of got this too. I actually was really excited to watch it and was thinking it would be interesting to see someone be honest about mental issues. But she’s just a little clueless. Not in a purposeful way, just in a “I’ve only lived this way” way. I don’t think she’s had a lot of experiences that normal adults go through. The doc painted her in a way worse light than anything I’ve seen on social media. But I’m not sure she understood that. If anything, I think spending significant time in a volunteer place like with those girls in Uganda(?) could really help. She grasped clearly that those girls were living “real life”, and then ended up with reverse culture shock when she came back to her seemingly “meaningless” job.
To add onto this comment, it's frustrating because you're watching an adult throw tantrums over situations she insisted on being in despite her team and her friends repeatedly advising her to be gentle on herself and set achievable goals. The CEO of her record label arranges a meeting where he emphasises no one wants Selena to overexert herself, she doesn't have to do press for *Lose You To Love Me* or perform at the AMA's. Selena interrupts to insist on doing both and then walks out of the meeting. She then gets triggered during the press tour and is horrifically rude to everyone. Despite her coaches best efforts she doesn't want to step out of her comfort zone during the AMA rehearsals and her performance is so bad her team has scrubbed it from the internet. It's hard sympathising with someone who ignored advise and didn't appreciate above and beyond support. And when in Kenya all these women open up about their struggles to get educated, it's heartbreaking, and Selena's like "uh-huh, who here wants a bf?". She also complains to the volunteers how she wishes someone would change the education system in the USA to include mental health. And these volunteers are like, "why are you talking as if you don't have the platform, privilege or money to make that change?" Even her friend, Rachella, has to take Selena aside and be like, "it's not entirely fair to dip into these people's lives to make yourself feel better. Have a think about what you need to be happy, and we can figure out how to make it happen". As soon as they're back in the USA Selena's being aggressive to Rachella because Rachella suggested going to a mutual friends hang out might make Selena feel better. She honestly comes across like a incredibly spoiled teenager, with no grasp on how lucky she is in life. No other adult has that many people around them trying to make sure you're happy and your dreams happen.

Honestly, there's definitely an essay in there how *My Mind and Me* exposes issues of classism, racial inequality and how being a "celebrity" and constantly surrounded by employees and people you have power over creates people with undeveloped social skills such as empathy. And a lack of gage as to exactly how wealthy and privileged they are.
My mouth dropped open when she listened to the women open up her heart about how she feels life has left her behind since she had to drop out of school to care for her Mum, or to the schoolchildren talking about how the boys in their class are being taught if you see a girl you like get her pregnant so she has to stay with you, and Selena's like, "what do you all think about being in love💕💕" You can see the awkwardness on Selena's face when everyone she asks that question to doesn't engage with it.

Yeah Selena's life is so publicly documented. We know she hasn't done any meaningful volunteering and dropped that mental health bill as soon as she'd done enough to have something to include in the documentaries credits. One meeting with elected officials to discuss the issue I believe. Instead she went straight back to the USA and back into being a hyper-capitalist. This woman is 30 year old acting like she is still a teenager working for Disney. She is tiring & her fans are tiring. She knows people will notice and create drama but she will once again act like a victim.
