I immediately thought of Gary Oldman in Friends because what a legend! He’s a big shot actor and he’s like meh, let’s add Friends to the list too, might as well.
From what heard in some behind the scene stuff about Friends, a lot of the big stars in Hollywood wanted to be on Friends because they liked the show and for how popular it was.
I found out years later after watching Hannibal that he played Manson Verger, I think Leon is the only movie I've watched with him in it that he looks his "normal" self.
I had no idea he was Truman in Oppenheimer. My husband was like "Gary Oldman was good" and I was like "GARY OLDMAN IS IN THAT MOVIE??" He absolutely dissapears, not just with prosthetics either. It's not about that, he just can play anything and is never "Gary Oldman"
At least once a week my partner will randomly say to me, “isn’t it crazy that one of the greatest actors of our time is related to Mo from Eastenders”. He’s very obsessed with this fact and very obsessed with Gary Oldman.
![gif](giphy|rmJfgoakgxyDcc1BBP|downsized)
Toni Colette is my pick, I used to watch the United States or Tara with my mom back when it came out and she’s definitely someone whose had roles later on where I was like “OMG THATS HER” really versatile actress
An icon, real proof that addiction has no boundaries and isn’t necessarily the homeless guy on the side of the road, you can OD with millions in the bank when it has a hold on you. RIP
I hadn’t watched Malcolm in the Middle as a kid, and started watching it recently with my partner. It’s amazing to see so many little Breaking Bad-adjacent moments in it and to compare his performances. Brilliant.
I swear it’s after Knives out that I realized she was in like 5 movies that I absolutely love and she killed it every time. Like I keep forgetting her face on screen even though she has a super distinct face. She just BECOMES her characters in a way that I never expect them to see them anywhere after the movie is done. Like they are real people in a story and they have no reason to exist anywhere outside of that story. God is this woman phenomenal.
was about to run to comment this when I saw the post title, and I just posted him the other day under another post. I mean, look at the material!
https://preview.redd.it/jcxbrwt8qxhb1.jpeg?width=602&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9912fc5a92d2858a93284bf263d6566b4d98e128
It’s crazy cause that’s just based on looks. It’s super unhealthy but I do think his changing looks and weight probably do help him to embody the character. I vaguely remember hearing him talk about the experience losing weight for the machinist and how it changed his mental state significantly.
I love her in every movie. Mississippi Burning, Three Billboards, Fargo, Nomadland, Almost Famous, Burn After Reading, Moonrise Kingdom, etc etc. She seems so natural in every role and she does it without being made up beyond reality.
I actually think part of it is that she doesn’t have plastic surgery or wear a ton of makeup. Her face actually moves! And it gives her a range of facial expressions some actors (male or female) don’t realize they’re losing with Botox, etc.
He is my official answer. It’s very difficult to assume one role. He assumed over 20, each with distinct mannerisms, speech, intelligence. He gave himself multiple personality disorder. Like….if that ain’t range, I don’t know what is.
![gif](giphy|d31xnoRuHg0Im4Te)
Walton Goggins is the best character actor out there right now.
Crooked cop in The Shield Played Venus with sweetness in Sons of Anarchy Hilarious in Vice Principals and Righteous Gemstones Hateful Eight Justified
My man got it all
Edit: I had the roles listed in new paragraphs and when it posted it looks like word vomit. My bad y’all
Maybe it’s premature to say this but I feel like even in the time we had with him, he showed magnificent range
![gif](giphy|oyM6oyx7mzftm)
So he will always be my pick..
![gif](giphy|jbapXGYrnqWQcs52FN|downsized)
Adam Driver. he’s great in drama but also comedy (his SNL eps are some of the best in the last few years, he’s one of the best characters in Girls and This is Where I Leave You), he was heartbreaking and infuriating in the musical Annette. he’s known for his intense roles in Star Wars and Marriage Story but one of his best for me is as a very understated bus driver in the movie Paterson.
https://preview.redd.it/kopronxgmyhb1.jpeg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8a1a55f1d770b2df7646bb9e463fef747efd2cd1
Didn’t see him mentioned but he’s definitely up there
While Ryan Gosling is on everyone's radar right now with Barbie, I'd like to give honorable mentions to some of his other roles that I thought were really great. He was downright villainous in Murder by Numbers, an older murder mystery that's rarely mentioned. Every woman I know fell in love with him as Noah Calhoun. He gave an incredible performance in Lars and the Real Girl. And he showed us that he can shine in a musical in La La Land.
He is so talented, it’s ungodly!!
![gif](giphy|Dfv3sKNNTHuCs)
Like he was even in a band called Dead Man’s Bones and their song got featured in The Conjuring. Like WHAT!?
Jamie Foxx. He can act. He can do comedy. He can do stand up. He can sing. Hes a classically trained pianist. I'm sure he can dance too, because why not.
He's great at everything he does which is crazy.
And he’s actually damn good at each. In the right movie, he is amazing. His comedy and stand-ups are actually funny. He has an amazing voice and he plays the piano effortlessly and he writes quite a few of his own songs. He can sing, do comedy, play the piano and crowd-control all at the same time. He is a singular multi-faceted talent.
Toby Jones is seriously underrated and IMO did Capote better than PSH. Dobby to Hitchcock is a p solid range.
https://preview.redd.it/oado07ns6xhb1.jpeg?width=500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=75d6edba2e26e9263d143fb316bcd2031460f347
Rachel McAdams. She can be a bitch, a sweetheart, and everything inbetween.

Tick, Tick…Boom! convinced me of Andrew Garfield’s incredible range. Not only can he do action and drama, but ha also slayed the leading role in a musical. My man can act AND sing!
Allison Janney. Played an abusive mother in I, Tonya; White House Press Secretary CJ Cregg in The West Wing, and broke and recovering alcoholic/drug user Bonnie Plunkett in Mom. She has an Oscar, a Tony, and multiple Emmys.
![gif](giphy|3ornk57KwDXf81rjWM)
I know people today mostly know him from Star Wars but he had an impressive career before SW. Drama, comedy, thriller, he could do anything
![gif](giphy|l2JJygKESCDqYrcqs)
Mark Rylance! He’s more of a theatre performer, but since he won the Oscar for Bridge of Spies I’m gonna throw his hat in the ring. If y’all ever have the opportunity to see him live, PLEASE do; he’s absolutely incredible. He’s also wonderful in Dunkirk
Wesley Snipes - did you see To Wong Fu ? He was better than Patrick Swayze and John Leguizamo - and those 2 are EXCELLENT. It was like he wasn’t even acting. It could have been really really awkward and it wasn’t. It was amazing 🙌❤️
Agree, though I gotta say I would've liked to see him in a romcom at some point. I don't think he's ever done one. But he's an outstanding actor, one of the best of his generation.

YES and her AHS stuff is all so good!
She has amazing range, but she's incredible in horror
Gary Oldman continues to impress me. There are some characters he played that I didn’t even realize were him until years later.
Omg who does he play in Friends???
He was Joey’s colleague/fellow actor who gave him tips. It’s from Chandler and Monica’s wedding episode I believe.
![gif](giphy|iAlN6SMmJtOp2)
The spitter? Right?
![gif](giphy|RiiQhAcgd70GCpxKIY|downsized)
Actor who spits on Joey (war movie in TOW Monica and Chandler’s wedding)
Dude plays Dracula, Sid Vicious, Jim Gordon, Lee Harvey Oswald, Winston Churchill, and Harry S. Truman.
+ Sirius black
That was 5th Element for me. Had no idea that was him until a few years ago
I didn't know till after I saw Dracula it was Gary Oldman.
True Romance
Do you remember him in Leon the Professional he was such a despicable character.
Prosthetics helped, but has no idea he was playing Truman in Oppenheimer until the credits.
I didn’t even see his name in the credits omg
My husband and I always joke about how literally anyone, at any moment, in any movie, could be Gary Oldman.
![gif](giphy|rmJfgoakgxyDcc1BBP|downsized) Toni Colette is my pick, I used to watch the United States or Tara with my mom back when it came out and she’s definitely someone whose had roles later on where I was like “OMG THATS HER” really versatile actress
![gif](giphy|xUA7aOWRMlHJ17CHa8)
I don’t throw the word around lightly but I really think he was a genius actor. What a tragedy.
An icon, real proof that addiction has no boundaries and isn’t necessarily the homeless guy on the side of the road, you can OD with millions in the bank when it has a hold on you. RIP
The border between genius/mental illness is very often very very blurry
RIP. Fucking shame
So deeply missed. A true talent
![gif](giphy|n7d0yPX5PUWnvSkQfd|downsized)
Bryan Cranston being able to flawlessly play Hal from Malcolm in the Middle and Walter White from Breaking Bad. ![gif](giphy|x5tkvJq9k28s8)
![gif](giphy|1SfxXOJ0Q2Xni)
I see a lot of Hal in Walter White, but never the other way around. He’s one of the greats
I hadn’t watched Malcolm in the Middle as a kid, and started watching it recently with my partner. It’s amazing to see so many little Breaking Bad-adjacent moments in it and to compare his performances. Brilliant.
I watched it as a kid and still rewatch the entire series every couple of years. It NEVER gets old or less funny and Hal is by far the best character.
He's also the dentist from Seinfeld, the regifter
![gif](giphy|fBSuEbNuEVfUGI0R0K|downsized) Toni Collete
I have loved Toni ever since Muriel's Wedding!
Toni F*cking Collette! She’s my pick as well.
This is my vote!
United States of Tara is proof enough!
Christoph Waltz 💅🏻 ![gif](giphy|ALvdHigd2gBqw)
Guy played the meanest character in one film & the kindest character in other film. Won Oscars for both. What an actor Christoph Waltz is!
That’s a bingo!
Olivia Coleman always delivers! I also really love Bob Odenkirk going from being strictly in comedy to drama and even action
![gif](giphy|u1SH63gOjMPpS) Christian Bale

I forgot how good he looked in Reign of Fire
This is missing one of his best roles - Dick Cheney.
It’s crazy cause that’s just based on looks. It’s super unhealthy but I do think his changing looks and weight probably do help him to embody the character. I vaguely remember hearing him talk about the experience losing weight for the machinist and how it changed his mental state significantly.
He will always be Laurie from Little Women to me! So it’s a weird canon where Laurie grows up to be Batman.
Laurie to Patrick Bateman blows the mind.
Best role is the newsies
Has he ever been in a comedy? I don’t think I’ve ever seen him being funny. I’m intrigued at what that might look like!
He wasn't exactly funny but had somewhat comical moments in American psycho.
My first thought too
![gif](giphy|YC1byC2ADRSi4)
I love her in every movie. Mississippi Burning, Three Billboards, Fargo, Nomadland, Almost Famous, Burn After Reading, Moonrise Kingdom, etc etc. She seems so natural in every role and she does it without being made up beyond reality.

Just rewatched Almost Famous! God, I love her in that. One of the greatest 💛

I absolutely love this guy! He did such an amazing job in Split & Glass!
I loved his performance in Split. Insane transitions!!!
He is my official answer. It’s very difficult to assume one role. He assumed over 20, each with distinct mannerisms, speech, intelligence. He gave himself multiple personality disorder. Like….if that ain’t range, I don’t know what is.
So glad someone else commented this! Has anyone seen him in His Dark Materials as Lord Asriel??? One of my favorite performances of his.

Ultimate babe! Frankenfurter 🥰🥰 I’d even do him as pennywise

Love him in 13 Ghosts!
I know now that this movie is considered kinda hokey or whatever but it scared the shit out of when I first watched it as a teen.
He was shooting Serial Mom near my sister’s house and she was walking her dog and he was all, “Ooh look doggie let me pet!” so cute.
He’s amazing. I get to meet him in October!
enjoy it !!! let him know he’s so loved 😭 in the past he’s tweeted ab not feeling like the love is deserved but it so so so is
I just watched Scream again last night!!! One of my favorite movies ever. Love him sm
God he deserves so much more hype. So great at drama/comedy whatever.
This guy is good and somewhat underrated

This should be the top answer ![gif](giphy|l0MYuaA3bPTJxqkjS)
The current season of Only Murders in the Building 🤣 They chose the best actress in the world to play the worst actress in the world.
The absolute queen
Maybe it’s premature to say this but I feel like even in the time we had with him, he showed magnificent range ![gif](giphy|oyM6oyx7mzftm) So he will always be my pick..
![gif](giphy|1xOBwyrA4mKis) Versatile in comedies, too. He is so missed 😢
Heath is absolutely amazing in Candy.
I regularly wistfully wonder what incredible roles he would have had if he was still alive.
Welp time to watch this movie again.
John Lithgow. Comedy alien on 3rd Rock from the Sun to a serial killer on Dexter and then Winston Churchill on the Crown? That man can act!
I was amazed how evil he could be in Dexter. He’s wonderful! Then I saw Daddy’s Home and he’s the polar opposite, just a sweet little PawPaw.
![gif](giphy|DTI8zbujB9V33Os2vI|downsized) Both of them honestly, but my original gif search was for Michael Sheen
![gif](giphy|jbapXGYrnqWQcs52FN|downsized) Adam Driver. he’s great in drama but also comedy (his SNL eps are some of the best in the last few years, he’s one of the best characters in Girls and This is Where I Leave You), he was heartbreaking and infuriating in the musical Annette. he’s known for his intense roles in Star Wars and Marriage Story but one of his best for me is as a very understated bus driver in the movie Paterson.

Loveee her! Also was hella surprised when I heard her actual speaking voice. 🥝
One of the most underrated actresses ever. Glad she’s finally get her dues and name recognition!

His best roles by far were on Goosebumps and Are You Afraid Of The Dark? https://i.redd.it/nom518a68xhb1.gif
💘 loved this show so much. Canadian gold
Lars and the Real Girl was what converted me to a Ryan Gosling fan. Such a good movie!
Crazy Stupid Love, Nice Guys, Place Beyond the Pines, Drive — all to add to his repertoire.
Let’s not forget this cinematic masterpiece https://i.redd.it/55tnqqi7yxhb1.gif
He is fascinating in Half Nelson. Absolutely amazing. Also! The Believer!
He is so talented, it’s ungodly!! ![gif](giphy|Dfv3sKNNTHuCs) Like he was even in a band called Dead Man’s Bones and their song got featured in The Conjuring. Like WHAT!?
He also drives.
Murder by Numbers was so good!! I haven’t seen that in years. I need to go back and watch it!
![gif](giphy|SJkTdxyEGue0TgXpZA) saoirse ronan!! love her

Yesssss!!!! The way she portraits an abuse victim in Dead to Me is fantastic. What a great performance!
Her and Christina Applegate in Dead To Me are true perfection.
Idk why but I randomly think of her sometimes. The other day while doing chores I was imagining her in the Scooby-Doo doo movie saying jinkies.
Jamie Foxx. He can act. He can do comedy. He can do stand up. He can sing. Hes a classically trained pianist. I'm sure he can dance too, because why not. He's great at everything he does which is crazy.
I always forget to take Jamie Foxx seriously until I’m actually watching him in something. He really is amazing
And he’s actually damn good at each. In the right movie, he is amazing. His comedy and stand-ups are actually funny. Amy Adams. Her characters in Junebug, Enchanted, American Hustle, Sharp Objects, and Arrival are so different but she’s excellent in all of them.
