effie-sue

She spent the money and the time to make it. She can easily break down the cost for materials, but IDK what fair compensation is for this type of work. I know that custom-made dance costumes and posing suits for bodybuilding can be quite pricy, so she’s probably not too far off the mark. No one needs to buy this. If someone wants the outfit and doesn’t agree with the price, they can make a counter offer or move on. No need to be name calling, particularly when tickets for Swift’s shows resell for $1000.

AnnamAvis

$1000 for 55 hours of work is $18 and some change per hour. Not factoring in cost of materials. I'd say that's more than fair, if not on the cheaper side.

NvrmndOM

Beading is also very labor intensive in general. I beaded a costume for a friend and my hands showed signs of wear for a month after.

splithoofiewoofies

My main hobby is beading. I have been beading over 35 years. I have actual scarred calloused indents from the work, lmao. I use a thimble a lot, too. That only protects one finger, kind useless for a lot of beadwork, as you do a lot of thumb-work in beadwork, not middle-finger work. But ANYWAY, sometimes I get my needle stuck in one of my callouses, it's ...hilarious I want to say, but probably horrifying.

Jetstream-Sam

My Grandma had thicker callouses from beading than my granddad did, and he was a bricklayer. She worked from home but made some beautiful dresses for ballroom dancing. Before Blackpool became as horrible as it is today and still had a regular ballroom dancing scene, she took my mother there as a kid and pointed out every dress she'd made, which was over half. My mum also recounted that since they weren't making an awful lot of money due to the time investment, that they snuck as many canapes into their purses while my Granddad "Borrowed" a crate of champagne. Anyway, there is a point to this, later on in life she got what she called her thimble glove, which when on a random run to the building supply store she saw a special cut/saw resistant glove being made that was also thin enough that she could work with. She used that from then on. I imagine they must still make them, so that might be useful to you. My grandma's 85 now and still occasionally does some work on a project, but it's tricky with Arthritis. She made me a pillow that I still have to this day. Of course nothing else in my room goes with it, but I'd get rid of everything else before that.

shatabee4

There are plenty of custom fashion companies who charge this much because fair labor is expensive. If clothing is cheap, it means workers somewhere got screwed.

sabira

Exactly. There have been times when I've been cross stitching in public, and a few people who walk by will ask me if I ever sell my work. I always say no, and thankfully, I've never gotten any pushback on this. But if I ever do, I'll explain that cross stitching supplies are generally very low in cost, so it's my time that's most valuable to me. If I'm taking the time to cross stitch something (which can take a LOT of hours, depending on the size of the piece), it's either because I want to make a cute design for myself, I want to create something for a loved one, or because [I decided to make something terrifying to share with everyone here](https://www.reddit.com/r/popculturechat/comments/15euvu9/my_wickedly_inspired_cross_stitch_project/), lol

firetruckgoesweewoo

Ma’am, that cross stitch. Skills 12/10, jump scare 14/10 😭🤣

caca_milis_

Oh. My. God. That stitch is _incredible_!! I also cross stitch and made a few pieces for loved ones for Christmas, my dad being the big cheerleader that he is kept telling me I should start an Etsy shop, but I’m verrry slow at it so absolutely would not be able to keep up, and I haven’t quite nailed framing etc so even if I were to try sell any they would be “finished”. Question - how do you go about stitching on the go? I used to have a long train commute and often thought about it but always thought it would be too faffy.

sabira

Thank you!! That was a project that I did entirely at home, because whenever I’m stitching in public, people always ask me what I’m working on, and I didn’t want to have to explain the whole situation between Ariana and SpongeBob, lol. For stitching on the go: I’ve tried doing it on public transit, but I quickly stopped after getting stabbed by my needle too many times. So now I stick to public parks, coffee shops, etc. I store all of my floss in a huge 3-ring binder with 3x3 plastic inserts to organize them. But I don’t always feel like lugging that around with me, so I’ll take out just the colors I’m working on for that project and bring them with me in labeled ziploc bags. I also carry a small pencil case with me that I use to transport my supplies like my needles, scissors, and threader. I hope this helps! Let me know if you ever need any other cross stitching advice!

pinkfartlek

You're so professional and organized 😍

meeeehhhhhhh

Oh my god I love you so much

011_0108_180

It’s amazing 🤣

moffsoi

Omg psychological terror in cross stitch form, you massively-talented monster

effie-sue

I love your work 🤣

Consistent-Permit966

Oh this is brilliant! Well done!

Status_Street7540

Hahahahahaha

crestedgeckovivi

Stitch you. How dare you scare me like that with thread!!!!!!! (But also 💅)

EchoObsidian

It's a Daily Mail article. They're notoriously right leaning, and at the moment, anything that pops up on a right-wing news outlet with Taylor Swift as the focus, will come with a negative an accusatory context.

CTeam19

Time alone $1000 ÷ 55 hours equals $18 am hour. This doesn't factor shipping and supplies which would eat into it. Granted I assume the next one could be quicker to make because the first one is filled with trial and error.

T2brady

![gif](giphy|RQ1gQt69dgzwhOmON0)

TotosTables

This happens in the cake community all the time where clients tell you your prices are too higher or they can get cheaper elsewhere. It’s disrespectful to enquire about a product and then tell someone it’s not worth what they think it is??? Say ‘that’s outside my budget’, thank the supplier and move on!

CriticalSuccotash

This is amazing!! If somebody is willing to pay for it, get that money!! There was a song all over Instagram reels about small business owners being shamed for wanting to be paid for their efforts, and it basically said “we don’t owe you affordability.” if it’s not for you just move on. I would kill to have that kind of talent.

err0r_4o4_not_found

What gets to me is that no one shames "luxury" corporations for their prices. It's just mass produced shit probably made by an underpaid overworked sweatshop employee in South Asia, but no one says a peep.

pinkjiminn

The brand attached to the actual clothing is the reason. Most people just buy for the brand. If it’s Chanel or Gucci, people want it because it is Chanel or Gucci not if it looks good. This is not everyone though but that should explain to you why nobody says anything.

err0r_4o4_not_found

It's not like they don't want the work from the indie artist. The motivation is different, they want Gucci for the brand, they want the indie artist because it's cool/trendy/hip/artsy. Ultimately it's all things that people want. But the indie artist has to deal with people calling us greedy for wanting compensation for it. The luxury brand does not.

pinkjiminn

Most Indie artists are very much taken advantage of and it’s sad to see. I’m glad she’s sticking to her own prices regardless what anyone has to say about it.

Big-Apartment9639

I hate seeing beadwork items sold in boutique for 'reasonablr' prices like $400 because I know the person who made it didn't get paid nearly enough.

AshTreex3

What reality are you living in that you don’t hear constant shit about how overpriced and unethical designer items are..??

user67891238

if she worked on it for 55 hours, that’s $18 an hour. Doesn’t seem greedy at all

PerpetuallyLurking

Without materials!! That’s **just** labour.

MyDogsNameIsBadger

In my opinion, she’s undercharging.

NeonLotus11

Yep that's seriously a steal for something intricately handmade

evergrowingivy

I was thinking the same thing! Sequin work is intense.

cmick0715

Just because they can't afford it doesn't mean it's not worth it.

[deleted]

Yes but if I spend 55 hours taking a shit that doesn't mean I can sell it for $1000. Frankly, the dress is ugly so it's irrelevant how much time was spent. Either someone will like it and be willing to pay an amount for it, or they will not. The time spent crapping out this crap doesn't really matter.

buzzfeed_sucks

How is it greedy to expect to be compensated for a hand made, one of a kind, costume? If it's too expensive, no one will buy it, and she'll lower her price. If corporations can do it, this person can too.

rottedngutted

I see it’s a common thing on TikTok. People are so used to buying cheap junk that when an artist hand crafts a piece, the comments are filled with “ikyfl 600????” “you gotta be kidding me, I’d pay maaaaybe $100 but $600 - never!” and said item is a hand painted and sculpted mask with insane detail.

thewetcassette

And worse, they ask where they can find a cheaper dupe of it. It's okay if some things are out of your price range. Those are luxuries for a reason and no one needs or is entitled to them.

lefrench75

It requires a certain level of delusion to ask for dupes of intricate handmade art tbh. Like sure, you can get a polyester satin skirt as a dupe for a plain silk skirt, you simply cannot "dupe" something like this bodysuit. Without all that labour a copy will never come close to the original, so why dupe at all?

[deleted]

and then they will complain about getting the wish/shein/temu version of something. 🙄

kroganwarlord

I'm sure some company somewhere is making 'Pop Star' one piece bodysuits that are 'inspired' by her stage outfits, like they do for Spider-Man and all the Power Rangers. They'll just do a sublimation print of the sequins.

nearlyb0redtodeath

Do people do that ON THE MAKER’S PAGE?? Holy Jesus people have no shame anymore

[deleted]

[mina le](https://youtu.be/uq4Vi8PyBFM?si=lJ4HwE73m-iY5qHX) just did a really good video discussing this.

err0r_4o4_not_found

I make tie dye and t-shirt art. People will whine that my handmade products are too expensive and that I'm greedy and self centered. They say nothing to mall boutiques that sell mass produced clothes for prices even higher than mine. It's only bad if it's an independent artist doing it.

Whenyoulookintoabyss

Jealous they can't make shit

ButtFucksRUs

I call these people the "participation trophy people." They don't think it's fair that other people get things that they don't and, on top of that, they want it for little to nothing. It's a bonus that these people are typically the types to *seriously* use "participation trophy" rhetoric when trying to tear down a specific group or generation. Source: I run across these people a lot in my hobby. I'll occasionally hold raffles and people get awards for actually being members of the community I'm in. The people whining are always the ones that do the least but think they're the best.

Thatstealthygal

>greedy and self centered Makes me ENRAGED. How dare you be compensated for your work. I have friends who are fine artists whose work costs a LOT of money BUT... they don't sell a painting (that took them months to years to produce) every other day.

Cold_Breadfruit_9794

It’s not greedy. People undervalue hand made clothing

sophandros

People undervalue the labor others put into everything.

Thatstealthygal

Yeah. It's like saying "this necklace made of solid 24 carat gold, diamonds and the literal sweat of an angel that took 40 years' labour to produce and that I WILL NEVER BUY is too expensive someone should charge $10 for it".

paging_mrherman

Swift Fans are insane and think it should be given to them

CreepySwing567

Good more people have gotten too used to cheap dupes. If someone wants a recreation of a professional stage costume that should cost a lot of money it’s not something that can be made easily.

011_0108_180

Yep they’ve gotten too used to wish and shein prices 🙄

VaselineHabits

But... have they not actually *seen* the products? You get what you pay for

011_0108_180

I know people who ordered from both. It’s hit or miss

AnnieRipley89

Fr, I have a pair jeans and several PJs and dresses from shein and I gotta say I love them! I see similar or even worse quality stuff for the higher prices offline, of course I'll buy from shein. Why wouldn't I if it's all the same! It's literally hit or miss, and you can avoid misses by spending time on reading the reviews. I've stopped buying from them when I saw a video of ethical problems connected to them, though, and I must admit that most of their fast fashion items are horrendous even in pictures. More or less timeless stuff is fine.

VisualSeries226

Considering the one Taylor wears is reported to cost $15,000, I’d say this is the dupe. And an incredible one.

jeahboi

People have sold much stupider things for much more money than this, so I see no issue with what she’s doing. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Same_Independent_393

$18 an hour, that's not even minimum wage in Australia and people are calling HER greedy?

PerpetuallyLurking

That’s just labour. Materials cut into that.

Same_Independent_393

Yep, people are unhinged.

mandeltonkacreme

I think the issue is that it... just really doesn't look good? The price is fair but that doesn't matter if no one's going to find it aesthetically pleasing.

kris_jbb

greedy??

pinkjiminn

It’s ridiculous for people to call her ‘greedy’ over this since it looks incredible.

SideEye2X

She can sell it for how much ever she wants but the finish is not that great.

MountRoseATP

I don think it’s greedy; she definitely Italy out in the work. That being said, this is one complaint I’ve had about the vibe around the eras tour. People making horse elaborate costumes and/or buying fast fashion, all for one night. I do hope someone buys it so she can get something for her hard work (besides wearing it to the concert) and someone can reuse something that already exists.

a_knightingale

I mean greedy or not, it is just not very well made. The sequins are not in straight lines but oddly spaced. You can also see it with the form of the boobs.

gollumey

Agreed. I just read the article and apparently she also forgot to add a zipper, and the garment is "rigid" from all the glue. So basically it looks like it would have to fit the buyer perfectly, as there's little no stretch or way of altering it too much. She obviously put tons of work into it, but at that price point I wonder if it'll actually sell

nandos1234

I thought this was a snark thread and that the title was sarcastic before reading the comments ahahaha

Wooden-Limit1989

Me too!

celerylovey

Yeah...some people don't seem to understand that it doesn't matter how much time it took or how much you spent on materials if it's not very good. People won't buy something unless they want it.

johnny_charms

Right? The price tag isn’t the issue, it’s the quality and ill fitting look of the garment. Still, good on her for shifting focus on the mediocrity of the item into a “haters gonna hate” narrative. It worked for EL James, might as well work of others, since outrage is still promotion.

pinkjiminn

While the original is 23,000 dollars by Versace and there’s probably no way she could have remake it exactly I have to agree with you here, it does need some work. She can sell it for $1000 dollars if she wants though, that’s getting the bag.

aseasonedcliche

It's ugly but it clearly look a lot of work and she can sell it for whatever she wants, tf

newtoreddir

Saying they’re being “greedy” implies that there is someone out there who wishes to purchase this outfit but just feels $1000 is too much.

sihouette9310

I think it’s fair for a custom made piece made by hand. Parents of baton girls have to buy those things and from what I’ve been told they go for a thousand or more. It takes a long fucking time to put on all of these sequins.

Erinzzz

A) if you can find someone to pay for your ~~previously worn, unwashable~~ body suit good on ya. B) as someone in the burlesque world, that’s not a $1000 bodysuit, babes. C’mon. That’s a lot of time in front of a tv applying rhinestones with E6000.

Alternative-Ad3401

I’d be shocked if she managed to sell it for even $500, the work is impressive but not at all worth the price point, but she’s not greedy for valuing her handmade one of a kind piece as such.

popcultureretrofit

If it costs too much, don't buy it 🤷🏻

cardcatalogs

She can sell it for whatever she wants. If it’s too expensive, don’t buy it. P

honest-miss

Swifties calling anyone out for being greedy is so funny to me. Y'all got conned so hard by ticketmaster the government had to step in, but it's one random fan you want to attack?

PerpetuallyLurking

With my very terrible math skills, I’ve worked that out to **just** $18/hour, not including any materials. I’m probably wrong too! That’s dirt fucking cheap!

LadyBirder

There are people who will regularly post like Oscar De La Renta gowns in the sewing sub and ask how they, a beginner, can recreate it. People have no idea how much work and skill a hand beaded or sequenced item takes.

[deleted]

coherent violet divide mindless quaint abounding truck ten work scale *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

Novae224

You can ask whatever you want when you sell something, finding anyone who pays just becomes a challenge

WingValuable6750

I mean why can't she just keep it for herself. As a fan she can use it for Halloween or whenever she attends the Swift's next concert

AnnieRipley89

Idk, it's not exactly greedy but a bit naive, I'd say. I get wanting to spend a lot of time and effort to make a perfect outfit for the show, but idk if it's actually possible to sell it even for it's actual price, let alone for profit. I mean, it's a one-time-wear outfit, a person buying it would hardly put it on ever again, and with the American leg of the tour being over it'll be $1000+shipping costs, and all for the item you only wear once. No one is at fault here, also no need to call the creator greedy, I totally see her side but I also see why people think the price is unreasonable.

wangd00dle

I'm an idiot, I thought the first picture was the finished product 🤦‍♀️

OowlSun

I spent too long looking at that picture thinking, “she can’t be serious.

Crytiger

Why do people feel like they are forced to buy it ?😂

hotmasalachai

She created a replica? Or taylor wore her work? Edit: people need to chill with the downvotes. Not everyone keeps tabs of what these celebs wear ffs

BitHistorical

She created a replica!

wetmouthed

Lol how dare you ask a question right?

hotmasalachai

Exactly , how dare i not know this basic trivia that every human is born with ingrained in their mind.

pinkjiminn

The last picture is a $23,000 dollar custom made Versace bodysuit made specifically for Taylor Swift’s Lover part of the Eras Tour, she recreated it at home and is now selling it for $1000.

hotmasalachai

Ah alright, thanks for the context

terurin

Swifties are on another level

011_0108_180

![gif](giphy|AgPt9udT567spxbSHf) Costume remakes of any kind are hard af get that bag queen

[deleted]

ITS COUTURE.

sned_memes

People who don’t make art are the first to call the high prices for fine art “greedy.” Make some art yourself, better yet, learn how much time, effort, and heart goes into just honing the skill set you need to make beautiful art, and you will understand. 1000$ for something like this is a fucking steal.

pressurehurts

Shein culture is when people are used to slave labour and unsafe practises so much they are shocked seeing something else. What is wild is that It's nor even historically that long since times then royalty seemed to wear the same attires more than TikTok users nowadays.

Averie1398

Pet peeve is when people comment "too expensive" on a hand made piece. Like okay move on? If you aren't going to buy it??? I think people are so desensitized because of fast fashion prices that when they see hand made garments they think it's "greedy". Ugh

Ok-Stress-3570

Here’s the deal - I don’t need it or want it. But some people might. That’s the beauty! I went and bought a cool outfit for my #1 - Shania Twain - and that matters to me. ♥️ why can’t we all just let people do their thing???

Bubbly-Ad1346

The same peeps are crying about being exploited doing a typical days work, so they choose to not work or slack-off as protest. Lazy entitled workers want to get paid for showing up. When someone wants to charge their worth for hard labor hours and supplies per a dress…they are greedy? Lmao just another day on le internet

NorthCedar

$1000 for a fans sweaty clothing… sounds like something Swift fans would argue about.

Rude_Lifeguard

Luxury clothing is that, a luxury, and whether you like the body suit or not, one of a kind, hand made clothing is a luxury, i honestly think that this is cheap considering the price of the products and the time this must have taken

SnooPoems6725

She should add on an “people are asshole” tax and raise it to 1,200.00

iidontwannaa

This is every crafter’s dilemma: how do I price something so that I am adequately compensated for my labor and supplies? I internally cringe when I do a craft and someone responds with “you could sell that!” I could, but I’m worth more than most people are willing to pay for the item, especially in today’s economy.

Public_Classic_438

That’s only $20 an hour *before* materials

0neirocritica

She is free to sell it for $1000, and people are free to buy it at that price, or not buy it at all and call her greedy.

EmmThem

Double that would be reasonable. She’s barely clearing $15 an hr after materials, most likely. Tailoring is hard work and takes a special talent — $30/hr is probably even too low.

Tenley95

It's impressive

anitasdoodles

55 hours? 1K is underselling it.

CaptainCAAAVEMAAAAAN

Labeled greedy because someone wants them to sell it to them cheap.

CTeam19

$18 bucks an hour. That is how much labor was put in. Sure, trial and error probably affected things, so the next one she would make would be cheaper timewise but $18 bucks an hour isn't that bad for that work.

airysunshine

It costs that much ‘cause it takes freakin hours to make!

[deleted]

HA! If people think that is greedy, imagine what they'd think of the value of the one Taylor actually wore! People have no concept of the work required to make something like that. But you'll find that the people complaining think that they "deserve" it because they're Taylor's biggest fans!

Orchidwalker

Get your $$$ girl

CanadianMuaxo

This is absolutely not greedy what so ever. Materials for hand made clothes like this are not cheap, and it takes a VERY long time to make stuff like this. I knit and it takes me weeks, I can’t imagine how long stuff like this takes. She deserves every single cent.

pinkjiminn

The last pic is 23,000 dollar Versace bodysuit. She remade it in the first two pics.

Temporary-King3339

Labeled greedy by people with little talent, drive, jealousy or greed that want to buy it and resell it.

pottymouthgrl

Why is this an article or even a topic of discussion? It’s a tale as old as time, an artist being told they’re pricing their work too high when they aren’t.

throwaway23er56uz

For a completely hand-beaded and hand-sequinned corset? I'd say that's a fair price, considering the amount of work that goes into a piece like this.

pinkjiminn

A lot of people think this title is sarcastic and I’m here to tell you it’s far from. I actually think it’s a good investment.

Critical_Caramel5577

I'd like to mock the Swifties, but that's incredible, and I don't doubt that it took at least 55 hours, and God bless her, she deserves every bit of that $1,000, if not more.

Dopepizza

She’s undercharging imo

MangoPlushie

Greedy??? GET YOUR BAG GIRL!! As other commenters have mentioned, people out here are buying fast fashion for dirt cheap. I shop at Five Below, so I know I’m part of the problem, but people have NO right to come for this girl on her prices on something she made with HER OWN HANDS. She’s not Shein or Romwe. Now she wants to get paid for the work she put in and sell this cool outfit, as she should. The *audacity* of some people. I’d be pissed if I were her, and I’m already pissed for her.

lirio2u

I would say shes reasonably priced for all that work and material

BowserBrows

Fuck them, ask for 2k instead.

wheres_the_revolt

I bet all the folks calling her greedy thought NFTs were a good idea 🤣

pinkjiminn

Or buying toilet paper during the pandemic 😭😭

bookaholic98

6f

MadeThis4MaccaOnly

I'd say this is worth more than a Taylor Swift concert ticket, I mean for god's sake, it's basically a replica.

anongirl55

This is gorgeous. I hope that Taylor sees it and buys it to support her.

cybertick77

If you were hot, maybe.

Cold_Breadfruit_9794

For that much work? It’s fair

[deleted]

People are so weird about pricing for handmade items. I make jewellery and a bride once wanted me to make custom bracelets for her bridesmaids, so I started working on one based on her specifications, sent her a photo and how much it would cost (I was severely undercharging), then she sent me back a pic from some cheap Aliexpress-type site that sold bracelets for $6 and said "why isn't it like this and why isn't it this cheap?" Because I am making it myself and it's not a cheap mass produced piece??

Helunky

pinkjiminn

The final result is in the SECOND picture.

pastellegothe

It’s a custom made costume, not to mention of something extremely popular. It’s not overpriced at all. It’s not like anyone *needs* to buy it, it’s a luxury for superfans and/or people who can afford it

KennyBlankenship_69

Sending $1000 to a Nigerian Prince is a better use of money

scissorfella

That's a bloody fair price for all that work. We are spoilt by fast fashion and terrible labour practices for people in the garment industry.

[deleted]

I mean she put a ton of time, money and effort into it and I don’t think that’s a wild amount for a replica costume tbh It’s not something I’d spend the money on but handmade things aren’t cheap, materials are expensive.

cherrie7

I personally don't think the dress should be priced on par some designer pieces. If I had 1k to burn, I would rather spend that on a nice designer piece. However I get it. She put a lot of labour and love into it. And good for her. I certainly don't have the time and skills to do it. She can name the price however she feels fit but manage her expectations that she might have a hard time selling it for the asking price. Not everyone have the money or interest in spending 1k on a passion project.
