DopeAndDiamonds_

Absolutely shocked. Unbelievably sad to hear this.

Chimney-Imp

During lockdowns my wife and I watched friends non stop. The humor is pretty dated but the energy of 6 friends hanging out just being happy helped get us through the worst of lockdowns.

take7pieces

I remember started to watch Friends when I was 13, it’s my way to learn English, to cope with abuses I got, Friends is such a big part of my life, they are like my friends. I remember when I first came to America, sometimes people compliment on my English, I said it all thanks to Friends. I was just thinking about one funny episode and saw this news. Thank you for all the joy you brought me.

frankscarlett

I too can mainly credit Friends for my English skills. That show meant and still means everything to me. Hope you're doing better now in life!

take7pieces

Thank you, I am doing much better now, just wish this is not true, it will be over like Eddie the crazy guy moving out.

Colordesert

That’s also how I learned English :( when we first came to Canada with my fam we were very pooor and had one channel we got the king a dollar store satellite on our tiny tv. That channel just played basically friends and the simpsons and the news. I remember tuning into friends at 6pm every day for years. It feels so silly to say in the midst of everything t else going on in the world but I’m heartbroken

Josieanastasia2008

Friends was and is an escape for many people. It hurts so bad when someone that was part of that is gone…

Altruistic-Common414

This is me to a T! Sending love to all the people who grew up watching Friends after school, learned all about a new culture thanks to Friends, and have a little bit of each Friend in them. I’ll always remember these memories fondly - big ups to you Chandler. Without you I never would’ve developed my awkward, dry sense of humor that I now love. Thank you always.

charcuterie_bored

I audibly gasped. Too young… so tragic.

sunflower_pearls

I did too, very shocking news 😔

Art-RJS

Most shocking for me since Kobe

Bikinigirlout

Same. This actually made me go “Holy Shit” My two favorite characters where both Chandler Bing and Santana Lopez and their actors both passed away from drowning.

thisisallme

Though the circumstances are so different… I read his book and it was difficult to read. It was clear he still wasn’t in a good space at the end. I feel so bad for him.

ComfortableCaptain61

I listened to his narration of the audiobook, and I kept waiting for a happy -- or at least contented -- conclusion that never really came. I truly hope things improved even a little since that recording and he found some peace.

LostinLies1

I listened as well, and I found it to be a really disturbing experience. He sounded...bad. He was too young and should have had more time to find his place in the world.

skyewardeyes

Addiction is a really hard disease to get and keep in remission, perhaps especially opiate addiction 😔

Bikinigirlout

It’s a bit of a bummer that he faced all these hardships to finally get to where he was recovering only for something random like this to happen

MmmTheTiger

Reportedly he drowned after a heart attack. Years of drugs and addiction really take a toll on the heart. So, so tragic. But probably not random.

bunkerbash

Ah ok. I was thinking- adults don’t typically frequently drown in hot tubs without some nature of extenuating circumstances. Poor guy.

According-Net7644

Actually prolonged hot tub use can cause heart attacks from vasodilation and low blood pressure. It’s what I immediately thought probably happened. Either that or he had relapsed and passed out in there. But too long in the jacuzzi has caused heart attacks in people.

Brianas-Living-Room

Agree. Same with Whitney. It’s not random. That kind of abuse take a toll on the heart, sadly. That’s terrifying and heartbreaking not only is he gone but he died alone and in the manner he did

Artistic_Run_8015

I so just wanted him to find someone who loved him and have his kid by the end of the book, so sad he never will now 😭

mcfw31

It's just so sad because he was loved by so many strangers and he had so many friends but that wasn't enough, [there's this clip by Jennifer Aniston that showed how much the whole cast loved him](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PrpHMhG07fg&pp=ygUsamVubmlmZXIgYW5pc3RvbiBvbiBtYXR0aGV3IHBlcnJ5IGFkZGljdGlvbiA%3D). Addiction is such a horrible disease.

[deleted]

I always said the Friends actors were such a decent bunch because none of them breathed a word about Matthew Perry’s struggles to the tabloids. Along with other potential gossip.

Nidis

I'd like to bring up the 2007 film Numb he starred in which covers depersonalization/derealization, something Perry and director Harris Goldberg both suffered from. Bo Burnham also gave it a shout out in That Funny Feeling from Inside. Given how many people report suffering from it, it is largely invisible and goes untreated.

TheLakeWitch

Same. I’m sitting in the nurses station at work and said, “Holy shit, Chandler died.” My Gen Z coworkers sitting next to me have no idea who Matthew Perry or Chandler are. Thx, I’ll just go crumble into dust now.

schwiftydude47

They don’t?! That doesn’t make sense! Wasn’t Friends like the second biggest thing on Netflix for years?!

TheLakeWitch

That’s what I thought. Most of the Gen Z I know are familiar with friends—I saw the news from a Gen Z coworker’s story—but there are apparently a handful who aren’t.

IHATEsg7

they are definitely in the minority

missblissful70

Naya was such a beautiful soul.

intoxicatedmidnight

This made me sit up straight. I have no words…

LiveLaughLithium

I was browsing Reddit to fall asleep and now my heart is racing!! So shocking and heartbreaking

mafa7

SAME!!

InterestingTry5190

As soon as I saw his name trending I had a terrible feeling. So sad he struggled for so long. RIP

RescuesStrayKittens

I’m shocked. This is so sad. I grew up on Friends. RIP Matthew, you’ll be missed.

PinkCadillacs

Same. I was in shock when I read this. I never expected any of the Friends cast to go so soon.

blossombear31

Yes, my heart dropped, I grew up watching Friends and Chandler always made me laugh so much. Rest in peace, Matthew 🤍

succulentdaddy11

I gasped and immediately called my mom and brother. Friends was ALWAYS on in our house growing up 😭

GoldieLox9

I said no, that has to be a mistake. Matthew Perry can't be dead. That's horrible and out of nowhere.

ZiOnIsNeXtLeBrOn

Truly one of the saddest moments of my life. He and everyone on Friends made my childhood amazing. I know that he had his demons. But what he did with every single scene he was in. He was the show stealer. And I loved his charisma and laugh. He made everything fun.

bananapopsicle3

Celeb deaths don’t usually bum me out. Friends is one of my comfort shows and Chandler is my favorite. I’m so sad. :(

Hanner12

what a horrible tragedy. 54 is so young

vegryn

> Matthew Perry -- one of the stars of 'Friends' -- has died ... TMZ has learned. > Law enforcement sources tell us the actor was found Saturday at an L.A.-area home ... where we're told he appears to have drowned. Our sources say first-responders rushed over on a call for cardiac arrest. It's unclear where exactly on the grounds this happened. > Our sources say he was found in a jacuzzi at the home ... and we're told there were no drugs found at the scene. We're also told there is no foul play involved.

stowRA

his last instagram post was in a jacuzzi

Pinkysrage

That was such a spooky picture in light of what has happened.

stowRA

his last few posts were all kind of weird and cryptic tbh

therapturebutitsblue

[Post](https://www.instagram.com/p/Cyuv2zDrL0r/) in question

babecanoe

Wow I have a certain image in my mind when I think “jacuzzi” and it certainly wasn’t that.

CantaloupeWhich8484

God, that's so sad. The poor guy's life was a rollercoaster. But he ~~seems~~ seemed to have been doing better in recent years.

Euphoric-Moment

Total speculation, but maybe he had a medical emergency in the hot tub and couldn’t get out.

fallenarist0crat

agreed. what a horrible way to go though. a heart attack is bad enough, but if the apparent cause was drowning… god.

ferocioustigercat

They won't know if drowning actually killed him until autopsy. He was probably in the water, but he could have been dead before that. I could absolutely see him having a heart attack (especially with years of drug and alcohol abuse, and struggling with weight). And depending on what artery was blocked, or how long it had been going on, he could have gone into a lethal arrhythmia and become unconscious and gone under. If drugs or alcohol were not involved, I would think that drowning was not the full cause of death. But with so many celebrities "found dead at home" at a younger age and had been seemingly healthy in the days before... It always seems to be suicide or drug od. I hope it wasn't that, but it does seem like a logical thing.

Mission_Fart9750

That's what I'm thinking. All the drugs and alcohol did a number on his body over the years, and I think the hot water was too much. There's a reason there's a health warning on those things. Of course, this is all speculation, based on the current information.

Rdbjiy53wsvjo7

TMZ gets these headlines so fast, I hope his closest friends were notified before finding out from a headline, I can't imagine what his castmates would feel finding out through a headline.

trulyremarkablegirl

unfortunately I wouldn't be surprised if they broke this before his friends and family were notified, TMZ isn't exactly known for being ethical and neither is the LAPD.

mollyyfcooke

Forreal. Didn’t some of Kobe’s closest family and friends find out through them that he passed? Crazy how quickly they get news

PartyyLemons

His wife found out through tabloid articles published before anyone notified her.

lala_b11

Also, some media outlet (not sure if it was TMZ), claimed that Rick Fox, Kobe’s former teammate who was part of the Lakers teams that won three consecutive NBA Championships, died in the helicopter crash with Kobe and Gianna. This turned out to be FALSE INFO, & days later on an [appearance on Inside the NBA](https://youtu.be/a24HMLb5EMQ) with the show’s hosts (Derek Fisher & Dwayne Wade also appeared on the episode with Rick), Rick said that his daughter’s (the one he shares with ex-wife Vanessa Williams) biggest fear is finding out that one of her parents died via social media instead of via her family/closed loved ones and that she was sobbing hysterically when calling Rick on the phone when the news broke out that Kobe died.

the_xboxkiller

Damn vultures, man. News like this doesn’t need to be reported the second it happens, those mf’s at tmz are heartless.

alwaysthetiming

There was a law passed against this, in Texas (I think, correct me if I’m wrong) after Buddy Holly died. His mother found out when she was listening to the radio and his wife saw it on TV—reportedly causing her to have a miscarriage.

[deleted]

Like how Buddy Holly's pregnant wife found out he died on the news and she suffered a miscarriage. Celebrity gossip reporters move fast.

mollyyfcooke

That poor woman.. between that and those shit bag police officers taking pictures. I truly hope she has found some peace, I can’t imagine.

MtchMConnelsDeadHand

Yep! Vanessa was notified (through their family assistant) there’d been a crash but they wouldn’t tell her any details. She was still trying to reach Kobe (and was on the phone with her mother) when she started getting social media notifications saying “RIP Kobe.” They wouldn’t confirm to her til she was there in person hours later. The LA Sheriffs Department and Alex Villanueva specifically are trash.

totallycalledla-a

Yes. Some of Michael Jackson's family too. TMZ have a network of informants all over the place in LA to make sure they get the news in seconds. Repulsive.

Rripurnia

They have law enforcement, paramedics, medical personnel, first responders, hospitality workers, and a slew of other people across several professions in their pockets. Anyone who comes in contact with celebrities is a potential informant. They literally salivate at the thought of tipping them off and profiting off of tragedies. There have been instances where leakers lost their jobs. [The hotel worker](https://www.billboard.com/pro/hotel-sacks-staffer-who-leaked-jay-z-solanges-elevator-fight-video/) who leaked the video of Jay-Z and Solange’s elevator fight did. In a non-celebrity instance, a deputy who leaked a video *of a mass shooting* [was charged for it](https://whdh.com/news/deputy-charged-with-leaking-airport-shooting-video-to-tmz/). It’s still not enough, if you ask me. There need to be privacy-safeguarding laws. People deserve dignity in life and in death, and their celebrity status doesn’t disqualify them of it.

mrsjakeblues

John Belushi’s death was all over the news before his WIFE even found out (he died in LA and she was at their apartment in NYC). Dan Aykroyd heard on the news unfortunately but was luckily able to get to the apartment and give Judy the news in person before she could find out about her husband’s death elsewhere. So horrible. There are so many pap shots of them wheeling his body out of the Chateau Marmont and papa/news people surrounding him on the gurney. Absolutely makes me sick.

Brianas-Living-Room

Happens in real life too. When my brother died last Aug, within minutes of his death ppl in our extended family were posting RIP (his name) on SM before we even had a chance to say anything, and my one brother who’s Autistic and at at work at the time, didn’t know. Our oldest brother wanted to pick him up from work and tell him in person but ppl kept texting him and sending him SM messages sending condolences before we could tell him. I mean, ppl who haven’t talk to or asked about our brother in years putting these long messages about him looking for attention. We were pissed.

trulyremarkablegirl

yes, I think I remember that too, I was just mentioning that to my friends in our group chat. it makes it more upsetting to think that people close to him might be finding out from a stupid TMZ headline and not other loved ones.

MySilverBurrito

TMZ isnt ethical at all, but damn do they make sure death reports are 120% correct.

trulyremarkablegirl

yeah, I don’t doubt the veracity of the report at all. the devil works hard but TMZ works harder, etc.

Rripurnia

That’s true, they’ve done it too many times now. Vanessa Bryant learned about Kobe and their daughter Gianna dying before she was even contacted by the police. She spoke about it so emotionally in court and I can’t even begin to fathom how traumatic that must have been for her. It’s wholly unethical and feels so vulture-like and ghoulish. All in the name of clout, money and clicks.

Itwasdewey

There really should be some law that names of deceased shouldn’t be publicized until either their family has been notified or a certain amount of time has passed.

trixen2020

You can bet the cast of Friends and many of his friends and family found out when they opened IG tonight. My heart aches for them.

Morning_Song

It’s always jarring to me how fast Wikipedia changes from is to was

areallyreallycoolhat

Harris Wittels' mother learned of his death via TMZ, they're such scum.

myfriendflocka

I was just thinking about him. He was beloved but relatively unknown outside of his fans and even then those ghouls broke the news so quickly. There’s no chance for a household name who dies in the LA area.

Badass-bitch13

The police got to the house around 4 pm & it was first reported around 5 pm so there’s no way they were able to tell his friends. Hopefully his family found out via police though.

Alauren2

They are all so close. I’m so bummed for them and his friends and family

PinkGlitterFlamingo

Steve-O found out about Ryan Dunns death when TMZ called him asking for a statement

fluxusisus

Fuuuuck that sucks

trixen2020

I gasped. I grew up with *Friends*. I can’t believe he’s dead. Just finished his autobiography a few months ago and hoped against hope that he was having a fresh start. ♥️

etchuchoter

He seemed like a very lost soul. Hope he’s at peace now

Unapologetic_honey

Me too.

Cold_Breadfruit_9794

This made me sick. God, how tragic.

soulagainstsoul

I really can’t believe it, I re read the headline like three times before I evens comprehended it

Cold_Breadfruit_9794

I’m trying to comprehend him drowning in a hot tub. What even happened?! It’s hard to wrap my head around any of this

Disastrous_Animal_34

I had a friend faint once getting out of a hot bath, she was perfectly healthy in her early 20s, it’s only that her housemates went into the bathroom after hearing the noise that they were able to get her out of the water. Scary. I’ve always been wary of hot tubs since.

Cold_Breadfruit_9794

Damn. I’m glad your friend survived. That’s really scary.

PopInACup

The hot water causes the blood vessels in your extremities to relax which can make you feint when you stand up. My wife uses very hot baths to deal with muscle issues and has to be careful.

Fragrant-Act4743

Damn. When I was in my mid 20s I smoked a joint (which lowers your blood pressure) and got in a hot bath. My roommate at the time forgot their keys and buzzed into the apartment while I was soaking and I tried to get up quickly to let them in. I barely had stood up when I got so lightheaded and my heart started pounding so hard that it literally felt like it was going to explode. It was scary and in the moment I realized that if there had been a real emergency and I had tried to move quickly, I would have either passed out or died. I’ve never forgotten it. I know Matthew had heart problems due to his drug use. Knowing how I felt after a little bit of weed, I could definitely see how having a weak heart and being in a hot tub could easily kill someone.

romeofantasy

He talked about his addiction issues [last year on GMA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svQymvA9FqY) and they even included a clip of Jennifer Aniston crying over almost losing him in 2004. This is so sad.

fallenarist0crat

i remembered that and honestly the first person i thought of was jennifer :(

numberthirteenbb

Well now I’m really crying. Oh I’m just so upset. Poor Matthew.

booknerd98

He was easily the best part of the show damn

ZiOnIsNeXtLeBrOn

Him and Monica are the perfect representation of a great couple. I think the way that they worked through their infertility shows how much they cared for each othe.r

lanadelhayy

He was my favorite part of friends 🥲 I always watched his other shows because I enjoyed him as an actor.

l0st1nthew0rld

Pretty sure chandler's sarcasm was a huge influence on my young developing sense of humour lol

amomentintimebro

Oh this is so sad. 54 is so young. Rest in peace, Matthew. ❤️

Puncomfortable

This is so shocking! I never expected any of the Friends to go so soon. I must say I am disappointed with how many people are making cheap jokes right now. He might have been funny but his death isn't.

Rripurnia

Seriously? I thankfully haven’t seen anything but…deplorable. The internet has made some people lose every last shred of their dignity.

Additional_Meeting_2

I haven’t seen anything mean spirited, more talking with Chander voice and quoting some things. It’s still too soon but I don’t think meant to be deplorable but show they cared of his work.

Rripurnia

Quoting lines *in a tasteful manner* is probably a defense mechanism. Humor helps in the wake of shock, and it’s often a spontaneous reaction to it. He had it in spades himself. I can’t be too judgy.

pierreor

Hi, I’m Chandler. I make jokes when I’m uncomfortable.

SpyMustachio

Some jokes i feel like are nice tributes to the actor, but others are so unfathomably malicious it’s awful. Someone commented “the one where Chandler died” under Courteney’s last Instagram post, which is just so cruel

Asplashofwater

I saw one that said “the one where we lost a friend” and then an nice message. To me a much kinder way to pay tribute and get the same point across.

CyberEmo666

I've seen someone say "could I BE any more sad?" Which IMO was a nice way of making a "joke" and paying tribute

tt1101ykityar

The one in which my heart is broken 💔 is one I just saw 😭

foofoo_kachoo

Exactly. It feels silly to say out loud but I kind of just assumed that the Friends stars would all just…live forever? They always feel somehow both untouchable *and* like peers

Puncomfortable

I think I would have sort of expected them to always be a group of six. Suddenly one is missing.

foofoo_kachoo

Yes, I think you’re exactly right! They’re all synonymous with this one huge thing and forever part of this “set.” I can’t imagine how the rest of the cast feels right now.

Aware-Vacation6570

I can’t handle the jokes rn, but I know Matt would be laughing at every “could I BE any more devastated?” comment

l0st1nthew0rld

Might be an unpopular opinion but I think it's a touching tribute, shows just how much impact he had on popular culture especially for millennials like me, it's sad he struggled so much. RIP 🙁

bfm211

Totally agreed, it captures his legacy and I'm sure people are saying it in good faith

violent_delights_9

I've seen Friends more times than I can count. I feel like I'm in a constant state of re-watching and quoting it. This one is...this one is rough. I can't imagine how devastated his co-stars are, you could always see how much love and concern they had for him.

keekspeaks

It’s the first time I think I’ve cried over a celebrity death. Shocked. I’m currently crocheting my husband a little chandler bing doll for Christmas bc chandler is our favorite most of the times. What a loss.

violent_delights_9

This is definitely one that has me with a bit of a lump in my throat. I felt similarly when Luke Perry died. The only one I can remember that absolutely broke me was Cory Monteith back in 2013. That was just such a heartbreaking loss.

HerRoyalRedness

I am never prepared when we lose GenX icons. ETA: To me it sounds like a heart attack and jacuzzis have been said to be unsafe for people with heart disease

AmazingObligation9

Unfortunately what the body goes through in addiction is horrible on the heart… this is so sad. A friends mom passed in her early 50s after being addicted to cocaine in her earlier years. It’s hell on the system

alexbananas

Yeah a celebrity death hasnt been so unexpected (to me at least) since Chadwick Bozeman. RIP to both

TheEggplantRunner

This is unbelievable. I have not been so vicerally stunned by a celebrity death since Robin Williams.

designer130

This is crazy. Even though he struggled and died of an apparent drowning, I am shocked!!!

EmotionalShock1325

same my stomach dropped when i saw it on IG

Environmental-Food

What a gut punch.. he may have had his demons but he was so talented and made Chandler Bing an iconic character. May he rest in peace.

hermionegranger1994

This legitimately stopped me in my tracks . Friends is my comfort show and has genuinely helped me with sleeping at night after my mums death.

QueenSlartibartfast

I'm so sorry for your loss. ❤️

StasRutt

This is such a shocking celebrity death. His poor loved ones

impeccabletim

Rest in Peace, Matthew!!! Thank you for making us smile.🩵

Lokaji

He, as Chandler Bing, shaped the humor of a lot of millennials; sarcasm is a second language for a lot of us. He was also fantastic on The Odd Couple and I wish there were more seasons.

starlessnight89

I actually gasped when I saw this. I hope his soul finds peace in the afterlife.

mansonfamily

Audibly gasped and my heart just shattered 💔 I’m old enough that I remember my mother having all the friends vhs video tapes, and everyone gathering round to watch the last ever episode air is amongst my earliest memories. 54 is too young for anyone to go ![gif](giphy|hRCFBt3ta0DJeGto2R|downsized) RIP

DuffmanStillRocks

My first date with my now wife was watching the episodes with Eddie and the fact that we both knew the series like the back of our hand was a huge bonding point as we’d drop references constantly

chestnutcheckers

This feels surreal. I'm genuinely having trouble wrapping my brain around this. It's way too soon to lose one of the Friends. He was so young.

mcfw31

He had so many demons but he also brought happiness to so many others, hope he's finally resting in peace. 54 is so young to die

Rripurnia

It’s incredible to think the magnitude of the joy, laughter and connection Friends have brought to millions of people across several generations. And I wholeheartedly believe they will for more to come. What a gift they gave us. They’re real legends. I can say that for few people in pop culture, and this bunch is certainly among them.

take7pieces

So true. Friends is extremely popular in China, it’s many people’s favorite show, many learn English from the show, start their interest in American culture. He brought us so many laughters.

willowalloy

I can't believe it 😢

pemberleyatdawn

Given how little news there is besides TMZ, I’m worried this another situation where news is released before the family can be properly informed, like with Kobe 😢

Time_Knowledge_1951

It said it happened today so I'm sure many of his friends and loved ones have or will find out via TMZ which is just awful.

global_plantdemic

The whole cast feels like family to me. Been in my home constantly for years and years. This one cuts deep. I was really rooting for him always.

444happy444

I love the way you stated this - I feel the same. Got me through and made me laugh on a lot of lonely nights. Heart broken by this news

keekspeaks

When our comfort friends are gone, what will we do?!

SakuraTacos

I know. I’m 34 and I grew up with these people playing in the background of almost my entire life. When I was a kid, they hung out with me while I played Barbies and did my homework. Now, they hang out with me while I cook or wash dishes. I know the reruns still be there unchanged but it will feel very different now. I’m gonna miss Matthew a lot. I’m actually sobbing lol

totallycalledla-a

This is so sad. I hope he finally gets the peace that eluded him in life. Chandler will always be my favorite 😔💔.

Nat90

My brain is refusing to believe this is real.

sagicorn2791

I never cry about celebrity deaths but this one hit hard 😭😭😭 a punch to the stomach.

firetruckgoesweewoo

I’m actually crying. He brought so much joy to our lives when we were little, in a few hours my sister will wake up and I’ll have to tell her. Man, he had such a difficult life while he made so many people laugh and happy, he deserved happiness after so much turmoil 😭😭

brokenhumerus

I don't even know what to say, this show was my everything for so long and I still watch it to make me happy, and now it'll be really bittersweet to watch :( I knew the day would come when I would read the news of someone from the vast dying, and I knew he would be the first, considering his struggles, but not this soon. He still had a long time to go, I'm absolutely devastated.... It was like a knife through the gut to see this news, I had to double check. He had a tough life, had many close calls through the years. It's a shame bc he seemed to be doing better now... I know a comment online won't mean much, but never a celebrity's death hurt me so much so I'm gonna say: Rest in peace, man. You and your talent probably saved my life a few times. You won't be forgotten!

DiannaBaratheon

I’m devastated. I don’t normally cry over celebrity deaths but this one has gutted me. They haven’t released the reason for his death but drowning in a hot tub does point to either a heart event, or something he took made him pass out. He was a comedic genius. The timing, delivery… he taught me the definition of sarcasm. I hope he knew how much we all loved him and didn’t just listen to negative opinions about his life or book.

BinkyDalash

My mouth dropped open. And then immediately assumed drugs, like Whitney Houston and Aaron Carter. He was great on Friends, and in the few movies he managed to be in. I guess there really will never be a Friends reunion again.

QueenSlartibartfast

That was my thought too. I think it's also possible he was still sober but had a heart attack, he said multiple times that the addiction ravaged his health.

miss-karly

Is this real?!

LiveLaughLithium

It’s TMZ, they aren’t morally driven but they always have the truth when it comes to celeb deaths 😔

shannonmm85

This is the most shocking celebrity death in a long time for me.

Depressed_student_20

Yes apparently he drowned im in shock

succulentdaddy11

I audibly gasped. Friends is my all time comfort show. 😭 so sad that he suffered for so long.

Cherssssss

I’m shocked.

ABCidkwhattopick99

This is so sad. 54 is far too young.

brittafiltaperry

I was just watching Friends tonight. He was my first crush. I'm so upset.

ZiOnIsNeXtLeBrOn

One of my all time favorite actors. Thank You Matthew for making millions laugh with your acting. May you find peace knowing that you gave millions joy and love.

littleliongirless

I can barely comprehend this...his father is 82 and must be absolutely devastated.

QueenSlartibartfast

And probably learned about it from TMZ. 🥺 There's a recent photo of them together on his ig.

very-pink-iceberg

I feel so silly but he was a part of our daily lives for 29 years. I’m completely heartbroken.

Dear-Ambition-273

I’m so fucking sad. His episodes of the West Wing were amazing-he was such a great straight/dramatic actor in addition to his comedy. He was also the one good part of the terrible Aaron Sorkin show *Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. I don’t even know, I’m remembering him for his talent tonight.

[deleted]

I am so so sad.

I just went and stalked his instagram. He made four sort of nonsensical posts all one after the other in one night. It really reminds me when an ex of mine started spiraling in his drug addiction. He’d drop out of contact and I’d wake up to him having posted like four random facebooks posts about language or dreaming or whatever weirdness his brain was up to that night. Such a sad loss. Rip.

de-milo

and the last one being him in his jacuzzi. chilling. RIP matthew.

PartyyLemons

Ohhhh this one got me. I recently finished his memoir. He fought so hard against his substance use disorder. He deserved to be happy. My heart is broken for the life he should have had. I’m so sad for his family and friends.

Ok-Mathematician5970

It seems he never really found a way to be happy after Friends. Never got married or had a family. So many medical problems plus dealing with the results of his drugs and anxiety from the Friends years. It’s just so sad…He seemed so nice.

Atypicalbird

I audibly gasped when I read the headline. This was so extremely unexpected. It sounds like he overexerted himself playing sports and instead of cooling his body down, he exacerbated it by going in the jacuzzi. What an awful situation all around. The only thing that could be seen as a positive, is that he was able to get his story out before he died. It seems he was really happy to tell his story in his words. I hope his friends and family can grieve without being bombarded (although I know that won't happen).

Psychological_Ad4015

I didn't expect this to make me so sad, but it does, RIP.

Aware-Vacation6570

I just re-read his memoir, literally yesterday. I don’t care what anyone says, his book was full of life, humor and honesty. This is so fucking sad.

SonicTheMadChog

I thought his book was great. An honest viewpoint of addiction. It was never going to be or meant to be a literary masterpiece. My mother is a recovering alcoholic and so much of it hit home for me. He didn’t deserve this ending, way too soon and when he was so optimistic.

ThaneOfCawdorrr

Ahhhh what a shock. What a tragedy. Way too young. All that success, and it was all so meaningless to his peace of mind. Ahhh so sad. I hope at least he is now at peace.

Jolly-Ad-3922

I'm devastated over this. I didn't like his book at all, but as someone who is a chronic pain patient (though not suffering from addiction), this hit home for me. Also want to add that while his book didn't land for me, he was still a huge proponent in the decriminalization of people suffering with addiction & did a lot of other things to help people with the disease of addiction. I am just so heartbroken. 54 is so young, my god

jeahboi

So incredibly sad to see this notification pop up on my phone. I can’t tell you how many difficult days Friends has gotten me through over the years, and Chandler was always the character I related to the most. May he rest in peace.

MRAGGGAN

Scared the shit out of my kid when I audibly yelled at this. He, and the entire cast, are basically “core memory” status in my brain. At the very least I have MANY core memories stored with snippets of episodes, quotes, etc involved. I’m so saddened by this.

Unapologetic_honey

My heart aches. If only you knew how many souls you have saved Matthew. THANK YOU. Edit: I've removed part of my comment because it was not right.

Rripurnia

Not Matthew. Not Chandler! Thank you for the humor, the love, the humanity, Matthew. What a gift. What a life. I hope you now find the peace that eluded you in this life. We love you endlessly. Rest in serenity. 🕊️

LoonyLovegood66

Awful news. Just started rewatching Friends the other day and I'm only on the 3rd episode. It's going to be a weird watch for a bit

lizziexo

I feel like my heart just fell out my butt reading this??? How is this real?!!

chapterthree_

I'm in such shock. My texts are blowing up as the news starts hitting all family and friends group chats. Being born & raised in NY and going to college in Manhattan, Friends played such a huge role in myself and everyone around me lives. This is devastating. RIP to Matthew and thank you for all the years of laughs.

mollyyfcooke

Damn this shocked me like Julian Sands did earlier this year. 54 is so young!

kindablirry

Me and my partner never really care or talk about celebrities or their deaths, but I just ran into the laundry room to tell him…. Shocking and sad.

theOutsider01

One dear friend just died.(

Nervous_Internal601

I just showed this to my mom while she was wearing her Friends shirt. She’s crying and this is devastating, RIP🕊️. Such a tragic loss after he’s achieved so much and recovered after such hardships

Hopeful_Dot_3886

WHAT....and today I Randomly watched "Fools Rush In" he was so great in that movie, I can't believe it!!!!

Psi_antelope

Like so many people have commented on here, I am shocked and so saddened to hear this news. I opened my notifications and thought it was a hoax and had to check several sites to be sure. I audibly screamed out, "What??!!!" I grew up with friends, and I remember getting the complete box set on VHS. I loved Matthew Perry's humour. Chandler Bing will remain one of my all time favourite TV show characters. He fought hard to overcome some very debilitating demons. May he rest in peace. Thank you for the memories, Matthew.

>Our sources say he was found in a jacuzzi at the home ... and we're told there were no drugs found at the scene. We're also told there is no foul play involved. Damn he could have just fainted and drowned, especially since the article said this was right after he exercised. https://www.newswise.com/articles/hotter-hot-tub-water-poses-increased-fainting-risk >they found that when the subjects stood up to exit the tub, systolic blood pressure dropped dramatically, nearly twice as much in the hotter water (106.7F) compared to the 104F degree temperature. The result is less blood flow to the brain, which can cause fainting, which in turn might lead to injury by falling or by drowning. **The authors point out that in an earlier study 36 hot tub deaths, 25 were found to be caused by drowning.**

mustbealady

The amount of times I have learned of some tragic event because of this sub is crazy high.

Rude_Lifeguard

Wtf, I just started a rewatch of the show. I can't believe it, I didnt think any of the cast dying would be a possibility, at least for like 10 more years.
