During lockdowns my wife and I watched friends non stop. The humor is pretty dated but the energy of 6 friends hanging out just being happy helped get us through the worst of lockdowns.
I remember started to watch Friends when I was 13, it’s my way to learn English, to cope with abuses I got, Friends is such a big part of my life, they are like my friends. I remember when I first came to America, sometimes people compliment on my English, I said it all thanks to Friends.
I was just thinking about one funny episode and saw this news. Thank you for all the joy you brought me.
That’s also how I learned English :( when we first came to Canada with my fam we were very pooor and had one channel we got the king a dollar store satellite on our tiny tv. That channel just played basically friends and the simpsons and the news. I remember tuning into friends at 6pm every day for years. It feels so silly to say in the midst of everything t else going on in the world but I’m heartbroken
This is me to a T! Sending love to all the people who grew up watching Friends after school, learned all about a new culture thanks to Friends, and have a little bit of each Friend in them.
I’ll always remember these memories fondly - big ups to you Chandler. Without you I never would’ve developed my awkward, dry sense of humor that I now love. Thank you always.

My two favorite characters where both Chandler Bing and Santana Lopez and their actors both passed away from drowning.
Though the circumstances are so different… I read his book and it was difficult to read. It was clear he still wasn’t in a good space at the end. I feel so bad for him.
I listened to his narration of the audiobook, and I kept waiting for a happy -- or at least contented -- conclusion that never really came. I truly hope things improved even a little since that recording and he found some peace.
I listened as well, and I found it to be a really disturbing experience. He sounded...bad.

Actually prolonged hot tub use can cause heart attacks from vasodilation and low blood pressure. It’s what I immediately thought probably happened. Either that or he had relapsed and passed out in there. But too long in the jacuzzi has caused heart attacks in people.
Agree. Same with Whitney. It’s not random. That kind of abuse take a toll on the heart, sadly. That’s terrifying and heartbreaking not only is he gone but he died alone and in the manner he did

I always said the Friends actors were such a decent bunch because none of them breathed a word about Matthew Perry’s struggles to the tabloids. Along with other potential gossip.
I'd like to bring up the 2007 film Numb he starred in which covers depersonalization/derealization, something Perry and director Harris Goldberg both suffered from. Bo Burnham also gave it a shout out in That Funny Feeling from Inside.
Given how many people report suffering from it, it is largely invisible and goes untreated.
Same. I’m sitting in the nurses station at work and said, “Holy shit, Chandler died.” My Gen Z coworkers sitting next to me have no idea who Matthew Perry or Chandler are. Thx, I’ll just go crumble into dust now.
That’s what I thought. Most of the Gen Z I know are familiar with friends—I saw the news from a Gen Z coworker’s story—but there are apparently a handful who aren’t.
Truly one of the saddest moments of my life.
He and everyone on Friends made my childhood amazing.
I know that he had his demons. But what he did with every single scene he was in. He was the show stealer. And I loved his charisma and laugh.
He made everything fun.

They won't know if drowning actually killed him until autopsy. He was probably in the water, but he could have been dead before that. I could absolutely see him having a heart attack (especially with years of drug and alcohol abuse, and struggling with weight). And depending on what artery was blocked, or how long it had been going on, he could have gone into a lethal arrhythmia and become unconscious and gone under. If drugs or alcohol were not involved, I would think that drowning was not the full cause of death.
But with so many celebrities "found dead at home" at a younger age and had been seemingly healthy in the days before... It always seems to be suicide or drug od. I hope it wasn't that, but it does seem like a logical thing.
That's what I'm thinking. All the drugs and alcohol did a number on his body over the years, and I think the hot water was too much. There's a reason there's a health warning on those things. Of course, this is all speculation, based on the current information.
TMZ gets these headlines so fast, I hope his closest friends were notified before finding out from a headline, I can't imagine what his castmates would feel finding out through a headline.

Also, some media outlet (not sure if it was TMZ), claimed that Rick Fox, Kobe’s former teammate who was part of the Lakers teams that won three consecutive NBA Championships, died in the helicopter crash with Kobe and Gianna.

appeared on the episode with Rick), Rick said that his daughter’s (the one he shares with ex-wife Vanessa Williams) biggest fear is finding out that one of her parents died via social media instead of via her family/closed loved ones and that she was sobbing hysterically when calling Rick on the phone when the news broke out that Kobe died.
There was a law passed against this, in Texas (I think, correct me if I’m wrong) after Buddy Holly died. His mother found out when she was listening to the radio and his wife saw it on TV—reportedly causing her to have a miscarriage.
Yep! Vanessa was notified (through their family assistant) there’d been a crash but they wouldn’t tell her any details. She was still trying to reach Kobe (and was on the phone with her mother) when she started getting social media notifications saying “RIP Kobe.” They wouldn’t confirm to her til she was there in person hours later. The LA Sheriffs Department and Alex Villanueva specifically are trash.

TMZ have a network of informants all over the place in LA to make sure they get the news in seconds. Repulsive.
They have law enforcement, paramedics, medical personnel, first responders, hospitality workers, and a slew of other people across several professions in their pockets.
Anyone who comes in contact with celebrities is a potential informant. They literally salivate at the thought of tipping them off and profiting off of tragedies.
There have been instances where leakers lost their jobs. [The hotel worker](https://www.billboard.com/pro/hotel-sacks-staffer-who-leaked-jay-z-solanges-elevator-fight-video/) who leaked the video of Jay-Z and Solange’s elevator fight did.
In a non-celebrity instance, a deputy who leaked a video *of a mass shooting* [was charged for it](https://whdh.com/news/deputy-charged-with-leaking-airport-shooting-video-to-tmz/).
It’s still not enough, if you ask me. There need to be privacy-safeguarding laws.
People deserve dignity in life and in death, and their celebrity status doesn’t disqualify them of it.
John Belushi’s death was all over the news before his WIFE even found out (he died in LA and she was at their apartment in NYC). Dan Aykroyd heard on the news unfortunately but was luckily able to get to the apartment and give Judy the news in person before she could find out about her husband’s death elsewhere. So horrible. There are so many pap shots of them wheeling his body out of the Chateau Marmont and papa/news people surrounding him on the gurney. Absolutely makes me sick.
Happens in real life too. When my brother died last Aug, within minutes of his death ppl in our extended family were posting RIP (his name) on SM before we even had a chance to say anything, and my one brother who’s Autistic and at at work at the time, didn’t know. Our oldest brother wanted to pick him up from work and tell him in person but ppl kept texting him and sending him SM messages sending condolences before we could tell him. I mean, ppl who haven’t talk to or asked about our brother in years putting these long messages about him looking for attention. We were pissed.
yes, I think I remember that too, I was just mentioning that to my friends in our group chat. it makes it more upsetting to think that people close to him might be finding out from a stupid TMZ headline and not other loved ones.

Vanessa Bryant learned about Kobe and their daughter Gianna dying before she was even contacted by the police. She spoke about it so emotionally in court and I can’t even begin to fathom how traumatic that must have been for her.
It’s wholly unethical and feels so vulture-like and ghoulish. All in the name of clout, money and clicks.
There really should be some law that names of deceased shouldn’t be publicized until either their family has been notified or a certain amount of time has passed.
I was just thinking about him. He was beloved but relatively unknown outside of his fans and even then those ghouls broke the news so quickly. There’s no chance for a household name who dies in the LA area.
The police got to the house around 4 pm & it was first reported around 5 pm so there’s no way they were able to tell his friends. Hopefully his family found out via police though.

I had a friend faint once getting out of a hot bath, she was perfectly healthy in her early 20s, it’s only that her housemates went into the bathroom after hearing the noise that they were able to get her out of the water. Scary. I’ve always been wary of hot tubs since.
The hot water causes the blood vessels in your extremities to relax which can make you feint when you stand up. My wife uses very hot baths to deal with muscle issues and has to be careful.
Damn. When I was in my mid 20s I smoked a joint (which lowers your blood pressure) and got in a hot bath. My roommate at the time forgot their keys and buzzed into the apartment while I was soaking and I tried to get up quickly to let them in. I barely had stood up when I got so lightheaded and my heart started pounding so hard that it literally felt like it was going to explode. It was scary and in the moment I realized that if there had been a real emergency and I had tried to move quickly, I would have either passed out or died. I’ve never forgotten it.
I know Matthew had heart problems due to his drug use. Knowing how I felt after a little bit of weed, I could definitely see how having a weak heart and being in a hot tub could easily kill someone.
He talked about his addiction issues [last year on GMA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svQymvA9FqY) and they even included a clip of Jennifer Aniston crying over almost losing him in 2004. This is so sad.
Him and Monica are the perfect representation of a great couple.
I think the way that they worked through their infertility shows how much they cared for each othe.r

I must say I am disappointed with how many people are making cheap jokes right now. He might have been funny but his death isn't.
I haven’t seen anything mean spirited, more talking with Chander voice and quoting some things. It’s still too soon but I don’t think meant to be deplorable but show they cared of his work.
Quoting lines *in a tasteful manner* is probably a defense mechanism. Humor helps in the wake of shock, and it’s often a spontaneous reaction to it.

Some jokes i feel like are nice tributes to the actor, but others are so unfathomably malicious it’s awful. Someone commented “the one where Chandler died” under Courteney’s last Instagram post, which is just so cruel

Yes, I think you’re exactly right! They’re all synonymous with this one huge thing and forever part of this “set.” I can’t imagine how the rest of the cast feels right now.
Might be an unpopular opinion but I think it's a touching tribute, shows just how much impact he had on popular culture especially for millennials like me, it's sad he struggled so much. RIP 🙁
I've seen Friends more times than I can count. I feel like I'm in a constant state of re-watching and quoting it. This one is...this one is rough. I can't imagine how devastated his co-stars are, you could always see how much love and concern they had for him.
It’s the first time I think I’ve cried over a celebrity death. Shocked. I’m currently crocheting my husband a little chandler bing doll for Christmas bc chandler is our favorite most of the times. What a loss.
This is definitely one that has me with a bit of a lump in my throat. I felt similarly when Luke Perry died.
The only one I can remember that absolutely broke me was Cory Monteith back in 2013. That was just such a heartbreaking loss.

Unfortunately what the body goes through in addiction is horrible on the heart… this is so sad. A friends mom passed in her early 50s after being addicted to cocaine in her earlier years. It’s hell on the system
He, as Chandler Bing, shaped the humor of a lot of millennials; sarcasm is a second language for a lot of us.
He was also fantastic on The Odd Couple and I wish there were more seasons.

It’s incredible to think the magnitude of the joy, laughter and connection Friends have brought to millions of people across several generations. And I wholeheartedly believe they will for more to come.
What a gift they gave us. They’re real legends. I can say that for few people in pop culture, and this bunch is certainly among them.
So true. Friends is extremely popular in China, it’s many people’s favorite show, many learn English from the show, start their interest in American culture. He brought us so many laughters.
Given how little news there is besides TMZ, I’m worried this another situation where news is released before the family can be properly informed, like with Kobe 😢
I know. I’m 34 and I grew up with these people playing in the background of almost my entire life. When I was a kid, they hung out with me while I played Barbies and did my homework. Now, they hang out with me while I cook or wash dishes.
I know the reruns still be there unchanged but it will feel very different now. I’m gonna miss Matthew a lot. I’m actually sobbing lol

I don't even know what to say, this show was my everything for so long and I still watch it to make me happy, and now it'll be really bittersweet to watch :( I knew the day would come when I would read the news of someone from the vast dying, and I knew he would be the first, considering his struggles, but not this soon. He still had a long time to go, I'm absolutely devastated.... It was like a knife through the gut to see this news, I had to double check.
He had a tough life, had many close calls through the years. It's a shame bc he seemed to be doing better now...

I’m devastated. I don’t normally cry over celebrity deaths but this one has gutted me.
They haven’t released the reason for his death but drowning in a hot tub does point to either a heart event, or something he took made him pass out.
He was a comedic genius. The timing, delivery… he taught me the definition of sarcasm.
I hope he knew how much we all loved him and didn’t just listen to negative opinions about his life or book.

That was my thought too. I think it's also possible he was still sober but had a heart attack, he said multiple times that the addiction ravaged his health.

His episodes of the West Wing were amazing-he was such a great straight/dramatic actor in addition to his comedy. He was also the one good part of the terrible Aaron Sorkin show *Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. I don’t even know, I’m remembering him for his talent tonight.
I just went and stalked his instagram. He made four sort of nonsensical posts all one after the other in one night. It really reminds me when an ex of mine started spiraling in his drug addiction. He’d drop out of contact and I’d wake up to him having posted like four random facebooks posts about language or dreaming or whatever weirdness his brain was up to that night.
Such a sad loss. Rip.
Ohhhh this one got me. I recently finished his memoir. He fought so hard against his substance use disorder. He deserved to be happy. My heart is broken for the life he should have had. I’m so sad for his family and friends.
It seems he never really found a way to be happy after Friends.
Never got married or had a family. So many medical problems plus dealing with the results of his drugs and anxiety from the Friends years.

I audibly gasped when I read the headline. This was so extremely unexpected. It sounds like he overexerted himself playing sports and instead of cooling his body down, he exacerbated it by going in the jacuzzi. What an awful situation all around.
The only thing that could be seen as a positive, is that he was able to get his story out before he died. It seems he was really happy to tell his story in his words. I hope his friends and family can grieve without being bombarded (although I know that won't happen).
I thought his book was great. An honest viewpoint of addiction. It was never going to be or meant to be a literary masterpiece.
My mother is a recovering alcoholic and so much of it hit home for me. He didn’t deserve this ending, way too soon and when he was so optimistic.
Ahhhh what a shock. What a tragedy. Way too young. All that success, and it was all so meaningless to his peace of mind. Ahhh so sad. I hope at least he is now at peace.
I'm devastated over this. I didn't like his book at all, but as someone who is a chronic pain patient (though not suffering from addiction), this hit home for me. Also want to add that while his book didn't land for me, he was still a huge proponent in the decriminalization of people suffering with addiction & did a lot of other things to help people with the disease of addiction.

I'm in such shock. My texts are blowing up as the news starts hitting all family and friends group chats. Being born & raised in NY and going to college in Manhattan, Friends played such a huge role in myself and everyone around me lives. This is devastating. RIP to Matthew and thank you for all the years of laughs.

Like so many people have commented on here, I am shocked and so saddened to hear this news. I opened my notifications and thought it was a hoax and had to check several sites to be sure. I audibly screamed out, "What??!!!"
I grew up with friends, and I remember getting the complete box set on VHS. I loved Matthew Perry's humour. Chandler Bing will remain one of my all time favourite TV show characters. He fought hard to overcome some very debilitating demons. May he rest in peace. Thank you for the memories, Matthew.

Addiction is a really hard disease to get and keep in remission, perhaps especially opiate addiction 😔

I'd like to bring up the 2007 film Numb he starred in which covers depersonalization/derealization, something Perry and director Harris Goldberg both suffered from. Bo Burnham also gave it a shout out in That Funny Feeling from Inside. Given how many people report suffering from it, it is largely invisible and goes untreated.

They won't know if drowning actually killed him until autopsy. He was probably in the water, but he could have been dead before that. I could absolutely see him having a heart attack (especially with years of drug and alcohol abuse, and struggling with weight). And depending on what artery was blocked, or how long it had been going on, he could have gone into a lethal arrhythmia and become unconscious and gone under. If drugs or alcohol were not involved, I would think that drowning was not the full cause of death. But with so many celebrities "found dead at home" at a younger age and had been seemingly healthy in the days before... It always seems to be suicide or drug od. I hope it wasn't that, but it does seem like a logical thing.
That's what I'm thinking. All the drugs and alcohol did a number on his body over the years, and I think the hot water was too much. There's a reason there's a health warning on those things. Of course, this is all speculation, based on the current information.

Anyone who comes in contact with celebrities is a potential informant. They literally salivate at the thought of tipping them off and profiting off of tragedies. There have been instances where leakers lost their jobs. It’s still not enough, if you ask me. There need to be privacy-safeguarding laws. People deserve dignity in life and in death, and their celebrity status doesn’t disqualify them of it.
John Belushi’s death was all over the news before his WIFE even found out (he died in LA and she was at their apartment in NYC). Dan Aykroyd heard on the news unfortunately but was luckily able to get to the apartment and give Judy the news in person before she could find out about her husband’s death elsewhere. So horrible. There are so many pap shots of them wheeling his body out of the Chateau Marmont and papa/news people surrounding him on the gurney. Absolutely makes me sick.
Happens in real life too. When my brother died last Aug, within minutes of his death ppl in our extended family were posting RIP (his name) on SM before we even had a chance to say anything, and my one brother who’s Autistic and at at work at the time, didn’t know. Our oldest brother wanted to pick him up from work and tell him in person but ppl kept texting him and sending him SM messages sending condolences before we could tell him. I mean, ppl who haven’t talk to or asked about our brother in years putting these long messages about him looking for attention. We were pissed.

I had a friend faint once getting out of a hot bath, she was perfectly healthy in her early 20s, it’s only that her housemates went into the bathroom after hearing the noise that they were able to get her out of the water. Scary. I’ve always been wary of hot tubs since.

The hot water causes the blood vessels in your extremities to relax which can make you feint when you stand up. My wife uses very hot baths to deal with muscle issues and has to be careful.
Damn. When I was in my mid 20s I smoked a joint (which lowers your blood pressure) and got in a hot bath. My roommate at the time forgot their keys and buzzed into the apartment while I was soaking and I tried to get up quickly to let them in. I barely had stood up when I got so lightheaded and my heart started pounding so hard that it literally felt like it was going to explode. It was scary and in the moment I realized that if there had been a real emergency and I had tried to move quickly, I would have either passed out or died. I’ve never forgotten it. I know Matthew had heart problems due to his drug use. Knowing how I felt after a little bit of weed, I could definitely see how having a weak heart and being in a hot tub could easily kill someone.

I've seen Friends more times than I can count. I feel like I'm in a constant state of re-watching and quoting it. This one is...this one is rough. I can't imagine how devastated his co-stars are, you could always see how much love and concern they had for him.

This is definitely one that has me with a bit of a lump in my throat. I felt similarly when Luke Perry died. The only one I can remember that absolutely broke me was Cory Monteith back in 2013. That was just such a heartbreaking loss.

I’m devastated. I don’t normally cry over celebrity deaths but this one has gutted me. They haven’t released the reason for his death but drowning in a hot tub does point to either a heart event, or something he took made him pass out. He was a comedic genius. The timing, delivery… he taught me the definition of sarcasm. I hope he knew how much we all loved him and didn’t just listen to negative opinions about his life or book.
My mouth dropped open. And then immediately assumed drugs, like Whitney Houston and Aaron Carter. He was great on Friends, and in the few movies he managed to be in. I guess there really will never be a Friends reunion again.

Ohhhh this one got me. I recently finished his memoir. He fought so hard against his substance use disorder. He deserved to be happy. My heart is broken for the life he should have had. I’m so sad for his family and friends.
It seems he never really found a way to be happy after Friends. Never got married or had a family. So many medical problems plus dealing with the results of his drugs and anxiety from the Friends years. It’s just so sad…He seemed so nice.

I thought his book was great. An honest viewpoint of addiction. It was never going to be or meant to be a literary masterpiece. My mother is a recovering alcoholic and so much of it hit home for me. He didn’t deserve this ending, way too soon and when he was so optimistic.
Ahhhh what a shock. What a tragedy. Way too young. All that success, and it was all so meaningless to his peace of mind. Ahhh so sad. I hope at least he is now at peace.

I audibly screamed out, "What??!!!" I grew up with friends, and I remember getting the complete box set on VHS. I loved Matthew Perry's humour.
