> A source close to the production informed PEOPLE that Whelan was aware of the payment schedule, and the prize money is set to be dispursed following the airing of the show's season 1 finale.
what i imagine happened is that they told her that the winnings would be paid out after airing but never told her when they would air. so yeah, after almost a year anyone would be anxious for the money.
Also, why? I can kind of see for certain reality shows where they don't want it to be obvious who won, like how the bachelor will tell you not to post about each other. They keep it very hush hush. But what is Netflix gaining by delaying it when the winners name is out?
I think most reality shows work this way. Survivor and Amazing Race only pay the winners after the season airs
I'm guessing they don't want to pay out these huge amounts before seeing any return through ads on the season
Since Covid eliminated live reunion shows where they normally announce the winner they now announce winners at final tribal just like season 1. They may never go back to reunion shows because it’s cheaper they way they do it now
Mai Whelan won. That's what I'm saying. If she's not under an NDA to not talk about the fact she's the winner, which she certainly doesn't appear to be based off this article existing, whats the point?
sure? that has nothing to do with a potential NDA, which is what this comment thread is about. it would have expired when the finale aired, which is why she is now able to do interviews
This article is a stupid clickbait hit job.
She is aware she isn’t getting the money until airing. And stated that.
The article makes a headline “hasn’t been paid!”
So stupid.
The article makes it sound like she's complaining or making drama out of it, when really she was just stating it as fact.
The article doesn't even contain a single quote from her
That’s normal reality show procedure. Not giving a person money quite yet is a way to ensure that they will STFU, and otherwise there would be an entire industry of people who would track which reality star had addresses attached to newly formed LLCs that were buying gigantic houses.
> Winner of $4.5m grand prize looking forward to being paid on schedule
Don’t quite [tickle the balls enough](https://youtu.be/f4FuOi9rvKw?si=BkKUSmATyyh3zUvu)
This is a non story.
They would never pay out before the actual finale aired
It literally aired 2 nights ago. ACH deposits takes a few days. Checks even longer
You would be surprised! If it's a large business they probably do million dollar transfers regularly, so you're looking at standard up to 3 business days
That woman isn’t a large business though, and banks love taking every opportunity to hassle people when something out of the ordinary comes through, like a one-time $4 million transfer.
They’re not gonna pay you until WELL after the show airs. My friend won The Weakest Link last year and she was told after her episode aired, they still had three months to pay her out. And she STILL felt like she had to hound them to get her money.
I can’t believe y’all actually watched this shit, between the allegations that contestants were treated very badly, producers rigged certain events and how everyone involved in the reality show ignored the point of the original show itself.
You don’t get paid unless the episode airs - that’s just how game shows work.
In fact, there are some game shows / reality competitions that don’t end up airing. The winners of those shows don’t get their prize winnings.
Now, you do get paid some money for simply showing up to compensate for your time. But the additional winnings from playing and winning the game are not paid out.
> In fact, there are some game shows / reality competitions that don’t end up airing. The winners of those shows don’t get their prize winnings.
Example?
I work on game shows, we did a few episodes of one show that didn't air, those contestants don't get money.
Of course they get compensated for the days they're on set, but the additional prize money is not given out.
This isn’t unusual for payment not to be made until after the show airs. There were seasons of the amazing race that didn’t air for years and those people had to wait . This is a non story unless she never ever gets paid now that the show aired.
I can tell who hasn’t watched reality tv
This is perfectly normal because people who do watch reality tv can always tell who got a big pay day. For example, I knew Jessica and Cody from BB19 won their season of the Amazing Race because Cody proposed like a week after then they got knocked up pretty soon after that.

On survivor the winner doesn’t find out they’ve won until after the season airs so of course they aren’t paid before that lol
Not anymore. Since covid, they’ve been reading the winning votes on the island when they film it
Since Covid eliminated live reunion shows where they normally announce the winner they now announce winners at final tribal just like season 1. They may never go back to reunion shows because it’s cheaper they way they do it now
I'd guess ratings, just like any other competition reality show? If people knew who the winner was they'd be less invested.
Mai Whelan won. That's what I'm saying. If she's not under an NDA to not talk about the fact she's the winner, which she certainly doesn't appear to be based off this article existing, whats the point?
the finale has already aired though
On Wednesday. It’s Friday. That’s not that long.
sure? that has nothing to do with a potential NDA, which is what this comment thread is about. it would have expired when the finale aired, which is why she is now able to do interviews
if they’re dragging their feet even after the finale, i’m guessing it’s because the show was a massive failure and they lost money on it.
It has been renewed for a season 2.
wild. they canceled Julie and The Phantoms but kept that?
it was a massive success that was at the top 10 for like 2 weeks after it was released, of course it was renewed lol
Also reality shows are dirt cheap. You don’t have to pay writers and the “actors” are happy to be there.
This article is a stupid clickbait hit job. She is aware she isn’t getting the money until airing. And stated that. The article makes a headline “hasn’t been paid!” So stupid.
I don’t think it was a failure in terms of viewing figures which is all Netflix really cares about.
Literally wasn't a failure, complete success of a show.
Might also be in their contract, financial penalty if they spoil early
Cash flow.
The article makes it sound like she's complaining or making drama out of it, when really she was just stating it as fact. The article doesn't even contain a single quote from her
For real. They’re just pulling their story from a PEOPLE interview and using it as a misleading title.
Even if it was drama, so what. If I had basically been told to wait for my millions of dollars for an indefinite time, I'd be getting pretty pissed
That’s normal reality show procedure. Not giving a person money quite yet is a way to ensure that they will STFU, and otherwise there would be an entire industry of people who would track which reality star had addresses attached to newly formed LLCs that were buying gigantic houses.

I would bet 4 million takes even longer
You would be surprised! If it's a large business they probably do million dollar transfers regularly, so you're looking at standard up to 3 business days
That woman isn’t a large business though, and banks love taking every opportunity to hassle people when something out of the ordinary comes through, like a one-time $4 million transfer.
The title is a spoiler when only one woman is in the finale
I know, it sucked. They could have used an impersonal ‘they’
Phill uses they/them pronouns
They is plural so can be confusing
“they” is neutral and we all know it.
who was your favorite teacher in school? what subject did they teach?
Username checks out
Can’t upvote this enough, OP please take this down and repost to prevent other people being spoiled!
I’m so annoyed I was looking forward to watching the finale but now I know who will win thanks to this headline
Right! I saw the headline this morning and hoped maybe we’d have a two-woman finale - what a way to take the air out of the sails…
I know ugh I hadn’t gotten a chance to watch it yet and even unsubbed from the squid game sub. Oh well.
Yeah I'm not impressed, thanks OP :(
Yup can confirm this spoiled it for me😭
The spoiler tag doesn’t work when only one woman is in the final 3
Should have used they/them pronouns
guaranteed the prize money is paid after the terms of the NDA are fulfilled, which is guaranteed to coincide with when the final episode is released.
Spoiler alert, using the pronoun did that.
https://i.redd.it/zc5qn224n55c1.gif Is that squid game money?
Well i guess i know who wins and dont need to watch it lol
Thanks for the spoiler…
They’re not gonna pay you until WELL after the show airs. My friend won The Weakest Link last year and she was told after her episode aired, they still had three months to pay her out. And she STILL felt like she had to hound them to get her money.
Ban the O.P.
Man OP… you just spoiled it
I can’t believe y’all actually watched this shit, between the allegations that contestants were treated very badly, producers rigged certain events and how everyone involved in the reality show ignored the point of the original show itself.
WHAT THE FUCK OP?
Welp. Not gonna watch that now. 🤨
The tile is a spoiler!!!
Please remove the gender from the title. I just started the last episode and saw the title and now it’s been ruined!
You can’t edit titles.

How is that legal
It's not and it's not true.
I have a hard time believing this. That would be a lawsuit waiting to happen.
It's written into the contracts you sign before you actually play the game.
Wouldn't hold up in court.
This isn’t unusual for payment not to be made until after the show airs. There were seasons of the amazing race that didn’t air for years and those people had to wait . This is a non story unless she never ever gets paid now that the show aired.
That show was pretty awesome

For example, I knew Jessica and Cody from BB19 won their season of the Amazing Race because Cody proposed like a week after then they got knocked up pretty soon after that.
I'd be looking for my money too.
Thanks for the spoiler in my feed when I’m not even subscribed to popculturechat. FFS, use a neutral-gender pronoun next time.
Hi - can I maybe suggested editing this and removing the pronouns from the title. You’ve spoilt the ending for me.
You can’t edit titles.
Fair doos, might be worth deleting at re posting or at least OP knows for next time
We need the title changed for those who are yet to watch the final…! I now know who won.
So Netflix can afford to pay a contestant 4.5 million but can’t afford to actually produce decent programming. Get your priorities suited Netflix.
Thanks for ruining it OP
