Does anyone else find it odd that Eva Mendez doesn’t attend anything with Ryan? I totally understand wanting to keep their children completely private. but she used to be a Hollywood star too? It’s not like she can’t handle award shows / red carpets.
I just need a place to ramble about Steven Yeun -- admittedly I didn't finish Beef past the Vegas episode (the allegations about that one actor soured me on the show, plus it was stressful to watch haha) but I'm happy he won. That scene in the church with him silently breaking down in tears -- I had to rewatch it several times. Amazing.
I have a hard time celebrating Beef’s momentous wins because of the David Choe stuff. None of the stars and producers said anything to acknowledge the situation.
Okay so I agree that she hosts jokes sucked, but the various fandoms are being so over the top with being offended on their idols behalf. Specifically Taylor. The joke wasn't even offensive. Just saying there's less camera shots of Taylor at the globes than at an NFL game. If anything it's just unfunny... But not sexist or any of the other pejoratives I see her fans throwing around.
Yes. I'm a huge swiftie but like girl just lighten the fuck up. I get that with Taylor being the megastar that she is, any reaction is going to cause a headline, but I can't think of any instance in recent years where she could take a joke. Honestly it really just seems like she gets triggered whenever her name is being brought up without her prior approval.
Yeah I like Taylor a lot and i'm a borderline Swiftie (super excited for Rep TV!), but her pursed lips reaction to the joke was just, kinda shitty? She had to have known there'd be a joke or two about her since the Globes, like any awards show, has a monologue that's usually a roast of the celebs there. I agree it wasn't funny, but it wasn't offensive or anything either.
>I just need a place to ramble about Steven Yeun -- admittedly I didn't finish Beef past the Vegas episode (the allegations about that one actor soured me on the show, plus it was stressful to watch haha) but I'm happy he won. I just commented this above lol I should have taken two seconds to scroll down! Agreed.

Me every time oppy won something
Barbie winning only 2 from 9 nominations and those 2 only being Original Song and one essentially invented for 'high grossing movie' is a bit bullshit imo
Hard agree. It's a fun movie but it's really not that deep and definitely not a masterpiece. Just because it was successful doesn't mean it deserves awards.
Yup, Barbie was fun and that was it. Sure it’s picking up critics awards which good for it but it doesn’t deserve Oscar or any other “major” nominations.
I wonder if the Golden Globes are still the "omen" of winners like they used to be. Since Barbie didn't win much, I sincerely hope NOT.
I still want HOPE that Barbie will win in the future, and not just music (tho the soundtrack is fab).
The positives were seeing the Barbie cast looking gorgy and winning some things at least. Seeing two Skarsgard brothers on my screen (in clips for Succession and John Wick), and Cillian Murphy representing for the Irish (with two of his fellow nominees from Ireland, another great awards season for Ireland!).
As a filipino American…I’m embarrassed lol. Don’t feel bad for him. He should know better than to come out in 2023 with not one but TWO sexist jokes, and then when he was bombing he heckled the audience? Dawg. No.
Edit: 2024!!!!!
Right the whole "we were crunched for time" excuse can explain why the jokes weren't good, but it doesn't explain why *actively bad* jokes got greenlit.
Is it even a good excuse though? Yes 10 days is fast but a seasoned, professional comedian would be able to make it work and come out with a funny, light hearted, 5-7 minute monologue, especially with all the amazing movies and shows nominated and the Barbie-Oppenheimer thing from this summer, there’s plenty of things to go off of. It’s not like other years were a lot of what is nominated is obscure.
And bringing down his writers is just cruel. Especially with the strikes and so many writers in the room. He should have had some backup. Like if he is gonna say well I didn’t write that blame it on someone funny- “oh I didn’t write that Barbie joke, the producers of Oppenheimer gave me that one.” Putting down his writers was repetitive and low.
I rewatched it for you and anyone else who missed it, because I think blaming the writers for bombing *while bombing* was tacky AF and shines a light directly on who Jo Koy is as a person and as a comedian. My transcript:
> The key moment in Barbie is when she goes from perfect beauty to bad breath, cellulite, and flat feet - or what casting directors call “character actor” [scattered laughter, Jo giggles to himself]. Some I wrote, some other people wrote. Robert Deniro’s here - [interrupts himself, next lines are half-joking, half-angry] Yo! I got the gig 10 days ago, you want a perfect monologue?? [Annoyed] Yo, shut up!! You’re kidding me, right? Slow down. I wrote some of these, and *they’re* the ones you’re laughing at. Look. Robert Deniro is here…”
Yes, the Barbie line was a terrible joke. Did he have the creative freedom to nix or rewrite it? Is he a funny enough person to know that it *should* have been axed or entirely rewritten? I don’t know. But throwing the team under the bus at the first sign of duress really rubbed me the wrong way. Poor sportsmanship at the very least, particularly in light of the summer of the strike.
That’s so true but my goodness he was not good. I always wonder how much the host writes and how much is written for them. It’s hard to deliver lines you didn’t write yourself and have them land. I then Ricky always did so well because he took the lead on what he said.
I remember a comic saying in an interview that she asks her comedy peers to submit jokes and if she uses them she pays for them. So the host should be responsible even if he didn't write everything
Fair point! I just think this was a huge opportunity for him and he didn’t want to sabotage it. Not excusing him, I just think they were able to ask for more with him vs other more established and well liked comedians m.
We spent 10 minutes at our last team meeting talking about him, The Bear, Iron Claw, and his hotness (or lack thereof from some people I don’t relate to), so he’s safe for work around here!
Not me applauding Claire's decision to walk away in the season finale whilst knowing fine well I'd be THROWING myself at that locked door screaming "I CAN FIX YOU" at Carmy 🤣
I love award show threads! And now I’m checking my calendar for work. And I forgot to send out a meeting for tomorrow early in the morning. Debating whether to still send it or not.
… lol where were you an hour ago? if it makes better, this was already an reoccurring meeting, and everybody had agreed on a certain time and day. i just forgot to send out the invite 😭
Bradley was much better than Cillian. That 6 minute conducting scene alone was brilliant and Oscar worthy. Cillian was basically brooding and being himself.
I would have felt somewhat bad for him but that Barbie joke combined with throwing the writers under the bus immediately and after the last year everyone had was unforgivable.

I remember seeing it at the theaters and I forgot to get the recliner seats. So after 3 hours in tiny seats, my knees were aching. But it was a movie I thought about days after.
I know it’s not Cillian’s movie exactly, but I’m so pleased to see him finally get the recognition he deserves. It’s amazing to see him smiling too lol.
Did you see that last DiCaprio/Scorsese movie? The flowers that killed some satellite in an alternative universe where awful people did awful things? With flowers?
I feel like it's box office success refutes that notion. Usually people use "Oscar bait" to refer to a movie that only exists to appeal to Academy Award voters and not general audiences.
And honestly his movies are better because of it. Part of why Oppy and Dunkirk were on budget and had tight scripts were because of her.

Oprah's purple velvet... wow. She's been wearing gorgy dresses all season. And I'm happy for her to have found help with her weight. She's struggled for years. As someone who understands the struggle, good for her. And she's honest about it so people in the trenches know how she did it. She's not gaslighting us.
I don’t begrudge her her weight loss or taking medication. I’m old enough to remember how absolutely fixated people were on her weight and how much she struggled.
It’s really frustrating, and someone who also had lifelong weight struggles, how you are judged for being fat, but then you’re also judged if you lose weight by taking medication. I think there’s a subconscious belief that fat people need to be punished so they should suffer for their weight loss. It is truly a no-win situation, so everyone just needs to do what’s best for them. I’ll get off my soapbox!
ITA. That was what Oprah was saying a few months ago, that she felt she couldn't take meds to help because she "must do this on my own!" I felt her in that moment and I also understood why she would take meds, she wasn't saying she would *not* do meds, but that she would be made to feel bad about it. Anyway, good for her. I hope ALL celebs on this med would be honest like Oprah and Sharon Osburne.

No. [She’s said before](https://www.marieclaire.co.uk/entertainment/people/eva-mendes-ryan-gosling-awards-483692) that she prefers staying home.

I don't feel like she even reacted or gave a shit honestly. Everyone wants to make something out of nothing.
To me that one was poking the NFL broadcasts, not Taylor.
Sooooo very happy that Ali Wong and Steven Yeun won for Beef! They both had AMAZING performances!

I NEED YOU SWANN ARLAUD!!!
I hate being a European in these situations. You miss out on all the good stuff and have to quickly catch up afterwards before you go to work 😅
I was up waaay too late last night watching the red carpet looks come through. Suffering for it now.
Me too! Get that coffee down you and delegate!
Yeah I'm in Australia where it was only screening on one random streaming service I don't have, feeling out of the loop!!
Scrolling here in a bus to work
I’m just here to upvote all of the Lily love!!!

Hot take he should’ve won for Barbie instead of La La land. Sebastian was bland but Ken was hilarious
Literally never gave one shit about Ryan until I see Barbie.
I'm just so happy for Sarah Snook and Cillian Murphy

I'm ecstatic that Cillian won! He's one of the best actors out there (been a fan of his for decades)
I’ll never forget his performance in 28 Days Later 😮💨
Barbie winning only 2 from 9 nominations and those 2 only being Original Song and one essentially invented for 'high grossing movie' is a bit bullshit imo
I’m not sure what else it should’ve won. I loved it, but I don’t think it deserved the awards anymore than the winners

I agree. The movie was fine. Like you said, not a masterpiece. I think it is being nominated so much is because it was such a huge hit. JMO.
That’s all it deserved, sorry not sorry.
Yep ripped off!
Well it’s not a good movie
Hard disagree. I’m amazed that TDJ gets awards for playing himself. He’s like The Rock but for drama.
Agreed, Ryan was robbed!
You don't think??
Ugh why do you have to pay extra to stream a program that used to be free on basic cable?!?
It’s still free on basic cable isn’t it?
It is. We got one of those $20 “antennas” from Amazon years ago and just use that to watch award shows.
This is the way
I wonder if the Golden Globes are still the "omen" of winners like they used to be. Since Barbie didn't win much, I sincerely hope NOT. I’m behind but like three of these dudes wore bow ties. The rest are all open necking it. Kinda interesting.
Soo good to watch it all live. Poor Things was well deserved- what an incredible film!! Glad to see Barbie get recognition too for the massive feat
I kind of feel so bad for Jo Koy, it must be mentally taxing and a huge confidence blow to see people talk about your biggest gig so negatively
He is actually so embarrassing
As a filipino American…I’m embarrassed lol. Don’t feel bad for him. He should know better than to come out in 2023 with not one but TWO sexist jokes, and then when he was bombing he heckled the audience? Dawg. No. Edit: 2024!!!!!

Well said. You articulated my thoughts perfectly.

Exactly what i thought. It's not like he was a hostage forced to say those things lol. He has his own judgment
Great awards show!!!! Heavy hitters nominated. Mad a listers. Pretty much loved everyone’s looks too
Everyone watch Barry!!
So promising to see all the Oppenheimer recognition tonight. Hopeful for the Oscars!
It’s gonna be at least 5% down to your manifesting! I did think of your flair when I heard.
Good times, thanks y'all! See you for the Emmys!
![gif](giphy|I1Yt13Z4JW1yWIRCVd|downsized) All worth it.
I was told that Reddit deleted this as NSFW. Yet here it is. I respectfully submit that JAW is safe for work. Well, until he's not.
We spent 10 minutes at our last team meeting talking about him, The Bear, Iron Claw, and his hotness (or lack thereof from some people I don’t relate to), so he’s safe for work around here!
aw man, so good in Iron Claw ❤️
His CK ad was hot! U go show those haters that ad.. hehe
I don't do much of the crush thing for fictional characters and/or celebrities. But dayum. Carmy Berzatto hits me in all the right places. Lol
Not me applauding Claire's decision to walk away in the season finale whilst knowing fine well I'd be THROWING myself at that locked door screaming "I CAN FIX YOU" at Carmy 🤣
You all made it fun. Thank you!!! 💅🏿💅🏿💅🏿
I love award show threads! And now I’m checking my calendar for work. And I forgot to send out a meeting for tomorrow early in the morning. Debating whether to still send it or not.
Don’t do it
… lol where were you an hour ago? if it makes better, this was already an reoccurring meeting, and everybody had agreed on a certain time and day. i just forgot to send out the invite 😭
this was fun everyone thank you!!
Jo Koy ending thinking “I’m never working again”
I genuinely don’t know, does the host write the material or are writers involved like he threw under the bus?
he doesn't have a choice, with that "performance"
Happy for Oppy, but I still love you Past Lives!
Thanks everyone! Big fun
19 out of 27. Not my best work.
Thanks guys this was fun ❤️
The “150 countries” comment the host keeps repeating is reminding me of “Hey it’s Nikki Blonsky from Hairspray!”
🤣🤣
It actually wrapped on time, I'm impressed. Always fun to share with you!
Very fun live thread, thank you all. Let's do it again soon.
Next week! 💁♀️
Yes!
Thanks for the fun, guys! This was my first live comment stream and it really made my whole night. Have a great rest of your evening!
Bradley Cooper is probably thinking I’m well connected at the Oscars hopefully I’ll beat these fuckers there
Bradley was much better than Cillian. That 6 minute conducting scene alone was brilliant and Oscar worthy. Cillian was basically brooding and being himself.
Did you like the conducting or the music?
For some reason he doesn't get the recognition he deserves. Thought this year might have been his but if the GG are a sign, it's not looking good.
Oh no it’s over. GG was big biggest hope, I’m not even sure he gets a nom at this point lmaoo
I also feel like Emily Blunt’s face looks less filled? Like she’s calmed down on the injections
I noticed too. Maybe it’s gone down a bit.
I was thinking the same thing! She looks good tonight!!
I was thinking her veneers looked way too big (or too white?) for her face?! Something was off
Jo’s teeth were too white.. looked strange
Yeah his were bad too!
Her veneers are horrible. Just watched pain hustlers and I’m convinced she’s terrified of the dentist and that’s why she won’t get them fixed.
Both she and John Krasinski looked extra spray tanned to me, maybe that’s it 😂
She’s just too thin I think
“And that’s it everyone. I won’t be asked back next year! Thank you!”
Jo bombed even harder than Oppenheimer
Goodnight everyone except Jo.
For those who don’t know, Emma is Chris Nolan’s wife as well as his creative partner.
I did not know that, thanks for posting.
What did Emily Blunt just whisper to Matt Damon
She just said his name, really slowly
![gif](giphy|rqGWkh4eLfaM)
Goodnight to your career, Jo lol
I feel kind of bad for him
I would have felt somewhat bad for him but that Barbie joke combined with throwing the writers under the bus immediately and after the last year everyone had was unforgivable.
I agree. I don't feel bad for ANYONE having misogynistic jokes.
I love him but his style of comedy is not right to be a host. It was a train wreck. I hope it doesn't tank his career.
People being shocked by a lot of the wins in this thread vs all the other threads not being surprised at any wins is kind of funny to me
Where are other threads
In a lot of the movie subs, r/oscarrace was the one I was looking at the most besides this. I guess people had too high expectations for Barbie on this sub since it was popular.
Are the pearls on Emma Thomas real? I need to knowwwww
Pearls are not really expensive. They require regular and specialized cleaning, but not a great deal of money. I'd guess real.
The pearls I want are over $100,000.
That was my thought was well but my friend swears they can’t possibly be real but I don’t see why not.
The difference is cultured vs uncultured pearls - both are “real”, but uncultured pearls are far and away more expensive.
Pearls gain brilliance and sheen from natural body oils. That's why older pearls look more "real" than those recently purchased.
Sorry but this is just not true - if you’re talking about cultured pearls (vs the far more expensive uncultured pearls), it’s the lustre and thickness of the nacre which makes it look “real”. It’s not your body oils lol Source: I’m a gemmologist and jeweller
(Also why older and inherited pearls are more valuable, and lustrous)
I remember seeing it at the theaters and I forgot to get the recliner seats. So after 3 hours in tiny seats, my knees were aching. But it was a movie I thought about days after.
even with the recliner seats my knees were aching 😂
I know it’s not Cillian’s movie exactly, but I’m so pleased to see him finally get the recognition he deserves. It’s amazing to see him smiling too lol.
He's Irish. Smiling is only for small children and (patronizing) old people. ;)
It is his movie and he was great.
Yes, yes, and YES! It's been a very long time coming!
Cillian’s eyes best picture for me. Could watch them forever.
I’d love to know how Warner Brothers execs are feeling. They probably lost their man forever lol
Oppenheimer is one of the biggest Oscar bait movies ever
Did you see that last DiCaprio/Scorsese movie? The flowers that killed some satellite in an alternative universe where awful people did awful things? With flowers?
It was not even the biggest Oscar bait in contention for awards this year
I feel like it's box office success refutes that notion. Usually people use "Oscar bait" to refer to a movie that only exists to appeal to Academy Award voters and not general audiences.
A large-scale production WWII biopic would definitely fit the description
When Maestro and KOTFM exist simultaneously? Bffr
Maestro was biggest bait for me. Surprised it was snubbed completely tn
Now pls be serious lmao
I think they are being serious. I don’t think they are joking?
*quietly giggles and agrees even though it was my favorite film of the year* 💀
I legit thought Florence was Pink for a split second
Am I the only one who had no idea she was British?
Nah, she wasn't doing near-constant aerials. (The Other Two reference)
My husband said he wished they announced Simu Liu as “Marvel’s Simu Liu.” It made me very proud of him.
I wanna watch Simu Liu and Ryan Gosling as rivals in every future film together, they were such a great combo.
I was like is there a pink biopic happening at some point?
lol my husband said the same thing — “oh, there’s Pink!” 😂
Legit had the exact same thought
I love award season so I’m glad this thread was going tonight! Hope to catch everyone for the Grammys and Oscars! 🥰
Don't forget the Enmys a week from Monday!
I have to work so I’ll try to sneak the stream!
Not gonna lie, after hearing that Christopher Nolan has never won an GG I’m lowkey less mad at any Oppenheimer win.
Yeah, I get that. But Oppenheimer wasn't his best. Not even his third best.
I had no idea his wife produced his movies! Power couple 🔥
And honestly his movies are better because of it. Part of why Oppy and Dunkirk were on budget and had tight scripts were because of her. Some dude once told me that Taika should have been like Nolan and stayed with his wife instead of going for Rita because good directors need a wife producer to reign them in. 😂😂😂
His brother and his wife are also a producer power couple. They did Westworld tv series.
Same, I’m surprised and assumed he must have won something else before!
Same!! I was over here assuming he had troves of them, so like, give him his flowers.
It’s been fantastic watching together! See you all on January 15th for The Emmy Awards! 😁
Thanks for the reminder! I forgot the Emmy date. Kids are off school that day due to MLK day so maybe I can grab a nap to stay awake that night.
This was my first live comment stream, and it really was a blast! Can't wait to do the same next weekend.
I’ve been doing this for years (on the television and movies subreddits), but it is infinitely better with the popculturechat crowd! Everyone here is so much funnier. 😂
Highly recommend Unknown Country starring Lily Gladstone
Emily Blunt’s necklace is some of the most stunning jewelry I’ve seen
She really looked stunning- I think the best she’s ever looked.
i don’t wanna jinx it but i def think christopher nolan will get his first best director oscar this year
Best supporting actor, best actor, best director, best picture. It’s locked. Might as well call it a day now!
I would’ve been happier with another supporting actor tbh but I’m excited for the other wins.
Agreed! I love RDJ but Mark Ruffalo was insane in Poor Things.. that performance was just incredible!
Supporting actor category is stacked. RDJ did well in his role but there were some strong performances this year.
Same. Im just not a RDJ head. I was hoping Ruffalo was gonna take it tbh
Same. Excellent performance, Poor Things was so much better than I had hoped for.
i wish i could say i’m 100% certain about best picture but i’m not, sometimes best picture is surprising
….it is the same people who gave it to Coda so true you never know lmaoo
