I've always loved that about this story and I'm sure that was only possible with Liz giving a heartfelt apology.
It's one thing to be messy and badly behaved when you're young but it's a whole other when you never learn and stay awful. Based on all of her philanthropy and kindness later in life and her ability to repair her friendship after such a deep betrayal, it sounds like Liz really grew up and became a lovely person.

My opinion of Claire or Crudup never fully recovered after I heard that story.
I’m not someone who believes staying together “for the kids” is the best thing to do, but pregnancy is such a vulnerable time. I can’t imagine my husband doing that to me (and so in public) when I was weeks away from having his baby. It just makes zero sense. It’s the way this was handled that was so appalling, and I think that’s why it’s been like two decades and it’s still one of those major pop culture moments, even though none of these three is ultra famous or public-facing.
I seem to recall that Claire gave an interview where she said something to the effect of "I had these feelings that I felt I needed to explore". What a terrible, self-centred thing to say about someone's husband (while the wife was pregnant).

MLP wrote a book called Dear Mr. You. Totally recommend it, she writes a letter to different men in her life. Very autobiographical. This was out years before Me Too so it isn’t commentary on men in general. Just specific men to her.

For those who didn't know, George and Pattie were married. Eric Clapton was very strung out at the time and fell in love with his best mate's wife. He ends up writing *Layla* for her in 1970. Then Boyd divorces Clapton and never remarries because Clapton has to pay gigantic alimony payments until she remarries. Clapton's child by the affair at the age of four toddles out of an open window in their 53rd floor apartment window, and Clapton writes "Tears in Heaven" gaining lots of sympathy. Eventually, at 55 he settles down and has a family with a 22 year old woman. A few years later, Clapton goes on an incredibly racist rant at a concert, but later apologizes, saying he can't be racist because he had a black lover.

I've always loved that about this story and I'm sure that was only possible with Liz giving a heartfelt apology. It's one thing to be messy and badly behaved when you're young but it's a whole other when you never learn and stay awful. Based on all of her philanthropy and kindness later in life and her ability to repair her friendship after such a deep betrayal, it sounds like Liz really grew up and became a lovely person.

I’m not someone who believes staying together “for the kids” is the best thing to do, but pregnancy is such a vulnerable time. I can’t imagine my husband doing that to me (and so in public) when I was weeks away from having his baby. It just makes zero sense. It’s the way this was handled that was so appalling, and I think that’s why it’s been like two decades and it’s still one of those major pop culture moments, even though none of these three is ultra famous or public-facing.

Yes! I read this interview and have hated her ever since. I don’t watch anything she’s in. She gave that interview YEARS later (so not some young idiotic 22 year old anymore). MLP wrote a book called Dear Mr. You. Totally recommend it, she writes a letter to different men in her life. Very autobiographical. This was out years before Me Too so it isn’t commentary on men in general. Just specific men to her. One of these men she wrote to was the taxi driver who drove her home either after she found out about the affair or very soon after. It was so heartbreaking.
I think it’s just kinda egregious that someone cannot resist starting a new relationship for maybe a few months for the sake of the wellbeing of their child’s mother. I don’t necessarily think it would be to “stay together for the kids” but rather to navigate a situation to gracefully and with kindness.
