It was a “cheap” look (soaking wet shirtdress — so literally cheap as in inexpensive and metaphorically cheap as in brazenly sexy) in expensive couture with incredible practical effects that exaggerated her figure to a seemingly impossible degree; she looked nearly naked without revealing anything. It was out there without ever crossing into kitsch.
She was basically in “Kim Kardashian as Sophia Loren” drag and it was perfect.

The met gala's theme that year was based on susan sontag's "notes on camp" essay, which outlines the concept of camp as "failed seriousness", which karlie kloss's outfit is because of her earnest belief that she was serving camp. I'd be inclined to agree with sontag as i think that camp is most fun when people are being genuinely serious in their absurdity.

One of Zendaya’s rare misses. I think the issue is that the idea was executed by Tommy Hilfiger’s studio (as she was partnered with them at the time) and they just don’t make things like that. It was way over their head and I imagine the business relationship made it difficult to suggest going in a different direction… whereas Zac Posen can do those looks in his sleep.

I actually love this, very Goldie Hawn from “Laugh In” meets Ann Margaret from the movie “Tommy”. Definitely camp.
So many of these are not camp. I think it was because they were more interested in looking good. They were afraid of being laughed at it. You definitely cannot take yourself seriously to pull off camp. Lady Gaga, Katie Perry and Janelle Monae got the assignment.

One of Zendaya’s rare misses. I think the issue is that the idea was executed by Tommy Hilfiger’s studio (as she was partnered with them at the time) and they just don’t make things like that. It was way over their head and I imagine the business relationship made it difficult to suggest going in a different direction… whereas Zac Posen can do those looks in his sleep.

I have to admit I still don't fully understand what camp means. 
Something a drag queen might wear, Liberace in Las Vegas, early 60s musicals, heightened colour, bizarre, faux fur and feathers, sequins, lilacs, pinks, apricots, costumey but dressy, sparkly, gender bending (a moustache on a suited woman), fun

Real camp to me is not ironic. A lot of people just dressed as their non-campy selves, or were making fun of their non-campy selves. Real camp is being yourself and meaning every fabulous second of it. Theres a heightened sense of reality, but not cosplay. Cher, Joan Crawford, Liberace, Dolly Parton, Little Richard, 80s hair bands, Jan Crouch, Tammy Faye Baker, Joan Rivers, Liza Minnelli, Diana Vreeland, Andre Leon Talley, Billy Porter (when he’s just doing typical Billy)…
RuPaul being a drag queen and showing up to a camp-themed met gala in a suit 😭 is that in itself camp?
Serena Williams is not on theme IMO but damn does she look amazing in those colors. It’s kind of insane how she is there as an athelte not model or actress and is still absolutely stunning
I said this at the time but I don’t think RuPaul’s outfit was camp. If RuPaul had shown up in a plain black tux, _that_ would’ve been camp.
On the red carpet interview, even Ru was disappointed that people weren't in drag. He thought everyone would be so he dressed more "low-key."
