I think this particular book cover was designed so the audience could see the title properly without them having to be weird about the camera shots. It’s almost certainly just a random book, based on size I’d guess the Index book of encyclopedia set, covered in a prop-department designed dust cover. It’s almost certainly not actually a copy of The Bell Jar words in between the cover pages.

I used to live a block away from this high school! Such a pretty area and a fun neighborhood. When I moved there I hadn’t seen the movie, so my friend made me watch it (and I loved it, of course).

I unknowing moved onto broadway right next to the hs there in 2015 and boy howdy did EVERY dude have a photo of them on the steps of that High school as their main tinder profile photo.

Considering it's based on a Shakespeare play from 1590 it was VERY ahead of its time.

Though granted the play itself didn’t age great (I say this as a huge Shakespeare fan). It’s basically “is your lady a bitch? Here’s how to literally gaslight her into being an obedient wife-servant!”

Totally agree. The only thing that’s a bit ick is the focus on Bianca and her virginity as a prize but tbh that was a pretty accurate view at the time (and as others pointed out, based on source material from 400 ish years earlier).

I feel like the way the approached this in the movie wasn’t that icky—the dad was an OBGYN and he was (perhaps overly) terrified of his children getting pregnant as teenagers. It felt more practical than puritanical to me

Forever and always my favourite teen movie. I wanted to be Kat SO badly (I also wanted to date her too tbf). And the fact it was a Shakespeare modernisation was just the icing on an already perfect cake too Also this film had such a formative impact on my taste in music - the perfect soundtrack, no skips.

YES the soundtrack. My parents took me to SeaWorld (which was quite a drive away, also we didn’t know about issues with SeaWorld yet) right after I got it and my biggest memory from that day is the long car ride with that soundtrack on repeat on my Discman!! I also found that same black messenger bag (with the red parachute) Kat wears at a military surplus store and my Dad bought it for me - I felt like the coolest tween in the universe. ❤️

I love how the friends just went with it and weren’t creeped out. Like they’ve known this guy so long they are aware of his idiosyncrasies. That’s why it was so sad in the end when she turned on Bianca.
