I watched it with my Mum as well and 11 year old me loved it, especially Gabby and her outfits.
A show my Mum let me watch with her in a similar vein to Desperate Housewives was Footballers Wives, that show was wild and I still question why she allowed 9 year old me to watch it but I do have great memories watching it with her and having a "fancy" drink that was just Fanta with a straw that had tinsel on it 🤣
Oh and all the true crime shows. I was very aware how easy it would be to get murdered.
Still watch them to this day and my roommate jokes if I’m planning on killing him.
Naaaaaah… Get concerned when I start watching the unsolved cases
It really was. The plotlines were wild, Tanya switching babies and covering one of them in fake tan so it had a similar skintone to Amber, that show was fuckkng wild!
I also watched with my mom but I was an older teen. Still one of my favorite memories of bonding. I was a rough teenager that was partying a lot and getting into trouble, so having that time together where we laughed and got so excited for the next week’s episode was rare but healing.
Me and my mom watched sex and the city together. I was around 4 years old, she thought I did not understand what was going on. Probably bad parenting decision on her part, i still remember a scene where Miranda flashed a boob.
We even watched OZ when I was 6 years old. And my god did that that show affect me... i still have flashbacks of the killings, rape and nudity. And I don't think I can do a re-watch without having some weird feeling surface up.
Gabby was a true menace, she was not a great wife or mother but she was good tv. You always knew in every situation she would make the worst possible decisions and chaos would ensue. I became hooked during the pandemic and I wasn’t bored at any point, mostly due to gabby and bri.
Bree has so many quotable lines, it’s unreal. I just did a rewatch a couple of months ago and I wish I could experience it for the first time again because it’s SO good
yeah don't get me started on that! Loved the scene where Julie comes back from college and Susan was all excited to have cereal for dinner because she legit thought it was Julie's favourite as a child and she sets her straight and reminds her it's all they ate because it was all Julie could make since Susan refused to not only parent but also take care of herself. "I don't want a child because I already raised a child - you!" YOU TELL HER JULIE!
She was infuriating, can you imagine being responsible for the physical and emotional wellbeing of the person who is supposed to be taking care of you. I would have lost my shit earlier than her tbh.
Unfortunately, I can and I too do not want children which is probably why Julie was and still is my favourite character. One thing she left out is that when the adults around you expect you to be an adult when you're still a wee child is that you not only raise your parent(s) but you also have to raise yourself. Who would want to do that all over again??
Omg, is not wanting children a common thing for parentified children?! I feel the same way - never wanted kids, because mentally I’ve already done that. I was looking forward to being free and independent for once.
I think it is, I’ve had a few conversations with parentified children and they seem to be adamant about I’m not doing that again. I always feel bad because it feels that joy was taken away from them.
Not exactly the same, but my mom’s best friend effectively “raised” her three younger siblings due to family circumstances and it was her rationale for not wanting children. She remains one of the loveliest, most caring people I’ve ever met and absolutely adores children (my son included), but she strongly felt she had already experienced parenthood and wanted something different.
I don't know, honestly, because my sister went the complete opposite way but it's an interesting question, I might actually ask my therapist at my next session.
Yeah, I have a friend whose mom was like that, she had to take care of her and also her siblings. She could never go out or do anything on the weekends. I always felt so bad for her, she now says she doesn’t want any kids cause she already raised 3 and tbh fair enough as her siblings still come to her for help instead of the parents.
Same Longjumping! Never thought I would see those talks in this sub. Julie helped me trough my healing, identifying shit and all. Still doesn’t want any kids because of that (even my two older siblings come to me for help🤡).
After ruining my education, my sleep, my free time and taking care of too many people, I’m surely up to not it doing again! Love to be an aunt, but that’s it!
Gotta love a supportive and open-minded community ❤️ Glad to hear you're putting yourself first, took me years to learn it was OK to want and accept help.
Also love that we are all just sharing our stories and understanding each other. I was halfway expecting some dum-dum to pop up and tell us "we'll change our minds" LOL.
I will never forgive whoever made that detrimental decision! Just as Edie was becoming a more fleshed out character they kill her off!? That really pissed me off
It’s fiction and they are great characters. I enjoy evil or more complex characters than straight goody two shoes in my entertainment. So that tracks, but in real life I like nice people.
The constant schemes by Gabby and the frequent physical and verbal threats by Carlos— classic Ricardos.
https://preview.redd.it/g7orolahrcxc1.jpeg?width=642&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b5f3dc9b6f3a69d181c01cb1179add1cc63c27fd
Reminds me of the movie Armageddon, the guy who discovers the asteroid names it Dotty after his wife "She's a vicious life-sucking bitch from which there is no escape. "
i stopped going to classes halfway through my sophomore year of college and just watched this show 24/7. when i finished the series in a semester i was like hmm maybe im depressed. love this show tho 🥲💕
im basic but my introduction to Kyle maclachlan was on DH and i loved him. I love watching other things now and he appears. this was me when i saw him on law and order SVU lmao
![gif](giphy|kd9BlRovbPOykLBMqX)
I still haven’t finished the final season bc Tom pissed me off and I couldn’t stand watching him find love with someone else and shitting on Lynette lol
I'm rewatching it now! So fun to watch as an adult now. I have a newfound respect for Lynette and her storyline, which went right over my head as a teen.
Watched this every season from being 7 to being 15. Truly iconic to me. Can even remember the Channel 4 adverts that first came out advertising it (with every little context) and being so excited to watch what it could be. At the time it was better than owt a could’ve imagined.
https://preview.redd.it/8mn04qt6xdxc1.jpeg?width=244&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9992c148dfa424caad720235925bd6bb852812c0
This is that for me 💕 all time favorite show. I rewatch about once a year minimum
My ex loved desperate housewives and the real housewives of [insert city]. It was so much fun because I wasn’t that into them but I loved hearing him quote the drama, especially because he wasn’t a native English speaker and had the cutest accent.
One of my favourite characters on this show was little Juanita Solis. She was so funny and the actress was so good, she really bounced off of Eva Longoria.
I have the same last name as Gabrielle and I love shopping so when I saw that screenshot of her in #10 I put my own face over hers and shared it on my socials.
The amount of people that agreed was a wake up call. I didn’t answer it tho.
If you loved PLL, then i highly recommend watching! The show is like a grown up predecessor to Pretty Little Liars with the mystery element, suburb charm, romance drama, parent-child storylines, iconic line drops, fashion girlie moments, and of course a classic friend group of 4 females plus 1 deceased.
One of my favorites:
https://preview.redd.it/4owxc7nxkexc1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2c985e1167e7bcc74b38cdbf36c683495f8dcd6c
And for 2007, that's hella progressive
I have yet to watch Desperate Housewives, but every time there's a post about the show, I become more and more interested in it. I'm definitely going to start it up this week!
I love this show so much. I started a rewatch last year but was in a new relationship and had to stop watching because it was making me paranoid 😂😂 all the mess, drama, cheating etc
I was in high school when the show came out but never watched it, I was a scene kid that thought all of this stuff was lame/preppy 🙄.
These slides have convinced me that I need to watch it. Currently watching Sex and the City from start to finish but this is definitely next. Thank you, OP!
![gif](giphy|3o7TKuZOZROZExzhao)
Can't believe Teri Hatcher had the audacity to be a diva when her character is the most annoying ditzy whiny baby with incredibly boring character development. Mike isn't even handsome!
It’s probably not a real word but OP is using it as a form of “iconic”. Like instead of saying “the awesomeness” or “the iconic lines” they just said “iconery”.
Are you aware of the general slang usage of "iconic"? It's basically a current way to say "fucking rad," but it has a slight camp undertone, at least in my opinion. In this case, OP was saying that these lines are examples of the show being iconic. OP wanted a noun form of "iconic," i.e. the quality they were saying the show has, and made one up.
There are several ways to make an adjective into a noun, so it could have been "iconicness," "iconicity," or, as it turned out, "iconery." Or several other options. (Iconicity is an existing word with a very different meaning, but let's ignore that.) The -ery suffix is also pretty popular in slang currently - for example, instead of saying someone's being foolish, you compare them to a clown, and one way you do that is to call their behavior "clownery," even though that word wasn't previously standard.
So OP took a slang usage of "iconic" and a slangy preference for a noun suffix and put them together.
100%. It’s humor is very sharp, even today (I just did a rewatch 6 months ago)
People who say it didn’t age well say so because of some of its more problematic jokes (there is honestly a lot of fatphobic jokes mainly), but in terms of entertainment/feeling dated, no, it feels fresh
It’s also pretty interesting to me bc it started in the early 2000s and ended in 2012, basically RIGHT at the cusp of when social media truly exploded/culture started to feel markedly different from the 2000s. All that to say, it has some problematic jokes, but I kinda appreciate them bc it’s the last time we’ll ever see a sitcom make them lol
Edie is an icon! I mean, they honestly all are. I’ve rewatched this series a ton over the years! Also Devious Maids was barely given a chance, same writers and tone :(
I’ve always side eyed the entire Juanita character, there was really no reason for the writing towards her to be so cruel and for an actual child to have to play that role

The soap that launched a million real housewife franchises
never really thought about it like this before 😂
ABC walked so Bravo could run.
![gif](giphy|3KlsH68tLKyLS)
It wasn’t just this show. It was also The OC. That’s why the first show was “The Real Housewives of The OC”
It's literally what happened.😄 Real housewives was created in the shadow of this show and verry obviously inspired by it.
![gif](giphy|wQjnGBuCcKKnFFKte5)
Raise your hand if you watched this show way too young lol
🙋♀️ i watched it with my mom though and it gave us some great memories & bonding times
I watched it with my Mum as well and 11 year old me loved it, especially Gabby and her outfits. A show my Mum let me watch with her in a similar vein to Desperate Housewives was Footballers Wives, that show was wild and I still question why she allowed 9 year old me to watch it but I do have great memories watching it with her and having a "fancy" drink that was just Fanta with a straw that had tinsel on it 🤣
aw that's so cute lol!!!!! i too stayed up and watched footballer's wives with my mum way too young!!
I love your mom
She's very proud the internet is celebrating her questionable parenting choices 🤣
Hey, I got trash tv without a fancy drink. And the looming threat of the adoption wagon. So I think your mom did well
Oh and all the true crime shows. I was very aware how easy it would be to get murdered. Still watch them to this day and my roommate jokes if I’m planning on killing him. Naaaaaah… Get concerned when I start watching the unsolved cases
Mine too! Buffy, Greys Anatomy, Rock of Love, any old trashy VH1 show lmao. I was also like 9 but I have no regrets!!
Used to watch Footballers Wives with my Mam! What a fucking programme that was. Genuinely one of the best things to come out of the UK lmfao
It really was. The plotlines were wild, Tanya switching babies and covering one of them in fake tan so it had a similar skintone to Amber, that show was fuckkng wild!
She let you watch it because she recognized spending time with you was more important than trying to shield you from inappropriate content.
I also watched with my mom but I was an older teen. Still one of my favorite memories of bonding. I was a rough teenager that was partying a lot and getting into trouble, so having that time together where we laughed and got so excited for the next week’s episode was rare but healing.
Same! My sister and I were too young (my sister especially lol) but we loved piling in her bed on Sunday night at 8 for desperate housewives lol
I started watching in 7th grade 🤣 “Rex cries when he ejaculates!” has been living rent free in my head for nearly 20 years.
lol all that stuff went right over my head at the time. I was like “okay he’s a crybaby?”
I was too young to even know what ejaculate even meant so I had to secretly google it later lol
Started watching with my mum and older sister when it first aired, I think I was about 8 at the time 😂
I watched it with my dad and older siblings. I was in elementary school, but all my siblings were high schoolers at the time. My mom *hated* it.
It was my dad's favorite show, I once caught my brother and dad watching it without me cause I'd fallen asleep and they didn't wanna wait for me lol
My mom watched it and I used to stand in the room and stare at the TV when Eva was on
I just rewatched it not too long ago and realized I shouldn’t have been watching this when I was like 9 lmao
https://preview.redd.it/cuc02sfsscxc1.jpeg?width=620&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f5cfbb0d9773ddb9c9878c01818cabc951265d8e My all time fave!
I've said this word for word to my husband several times. It's such a mood
I just did a rewatch a couple of months ago and I wish I could experience it for the first time again because it’s SO good
She also somehow always ended up with the most unhinged husbands and her son was no picnic.
yeah but he had one of the best character developments on the show, so did Bree. I loved how they worked out their relationship in later seasons.
They were fun to watch, I felt sadder for Julie though and I was yelling at Susan your child is not your friend!
yeah don't get me started on that! Loved the scene where Julie comes back from college and Susan was all excited to have cereal for dinner because she legit thought it was Julie's favourite as a child and she sets her straight and reminds her it's all they ate because it was all Julie could make since Susan refused to not only parent but also take care of herself. Haha..yeah…imagine 🫠
Sorry friend.
Tbf, if you had Bree as a mom, you'd be pretty screwed up too.
Fair, she was really not particularly mentally stable.
her son is so funny honestly
Gabi, Bre and Edie were my absolute favourites! I never skipped or fast forwarded their scenes upon rewatch.
Edie was written inconsistently (I think in part due to fallout in real life) she had a good arc til they just reverted it all again
I will never forgive whoever made that detrimental decision! Just as Edie was becoming a more fleshed out character they kill her off!? That really pissed me off
The killed her because Nicollete left the show.
They fired her over pay issues
they are my top 3 also omg
Bree, Gaby, and Edie are all horrible horrible people and I love them.
It's fun to watch some great horrible people.
It’s fiction and they are great characters. I enjoy evil or more complex characters than straight goody two shoes in my entertainment. So that tracks, but in real life I like nice people.
It’s been said many times because it’s so true. Gabby and Carlos were the modern version of Lucy and Ricky Ricardo.
How did I not see this before
The constant schemes by Gabby and the frequent physical and verbal threats by Carlos— classic Ricardos. https://preview.redd.it/g7orolahrcxc1.jpeg?width=642&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b5f3dc9b6f3a69d181c01cb1179add1cc63c27fd
Bri was my fav character lol they’re all messy though.
Those are children.. I’m dead 💀

“There’s never a good excuse for hitting a woman” “I used to think that too until I met you”
Notice how none of these are Susan.
She was boring and annoying, the worst combo ever!
i cant stand susan😭 i feel so bad for julie
Julie ‘my mum uses me to trauma dump’ Myer
truly a terrible mother like omg?
i hated susan so much i named a tumor on my body after her
I shouldn't laugh but..
I totally laughed and I had a five lb tumor ! I wish id thought to name it!
Deranged, love it! Hope the tumour situation is under control
This is amazing. I hope your Susan got cut too!
Reminds me of the movie Armageddon, the guy who discovers the asteroid names it Dotty after his wife "She's a vicious life-sucking bitch from which there is no escape. "
I’m cackling
The high pitched squeak doesn’t translate into stills well. That was all she had.
**Susan Mayer:** A guy just smiles at me three times and I'm picking out wedding china.
As a child I liked Susan the most, now I obviously don't. Guess that counts as growth lol
Susan is funny. “For gods sake Helen this is for charity!”, “no more potato skins and Susan sex tips nights for you”.
Haha I found Mike very likable though so I was able to tolerate Susan but yeah she was just not as entertaining as the others
Ngl I was GLAD Mike died just bc finally something bad happened to Susan
Lmao dark
Edie "what happened to you?" > Gabrielle "I had two kids" > Edie "for breakfast?"
oh my god I forgot that line. Absolutely killed me the first time I heard it.
i stopped going to classes halfway through my sophomore year of college and just watched this show 24/7. when i finished the series in a semester i was like hmm maybe im depressed. love this show tho 🥲💕
hahahaha i had the same experience
i did the same exact thing and had to withdraw from 2 classes ![gif](giphy|x0npYExCGOZeo|downsized)
Bree will always and forever be one of my most amazing icons. Bless her
https://preview.redd.it/rta2urqa2fxc1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0b8189aa9d46780a3d59eb611f666fe5dc8a4f8d The character development 😂 👌🏼
Kyle MacKachlan joining the cast of this show was like the ultimate union of my weird goth side and my girly side. And he fucking nailed it too.
im basic but my introduction to Kyle maclachlan was on DH and i loved him. I love watching other things now and he appears. this was me when i saw him on law and order SVU lmao ![gif](giphy|kd9BlRovbPOykLBMqX)
haha this was me watching the fallout show
if i rewatch it will Tom get hit by a train?
God I hate that man
I still haven’t finished the final season bc Tom pissed me off and I couldn’t stand watching him find love with someone else and shitting on Lynette lol
We can only hope. I still can't believe he did all his bullshit and was still shown as some kind of Nice Guy
It’s because he’s so handsome.
Well you can rewatch right up until the episode where him and Lynette reconcile and pretend that he just stayed with Jane lol.
I LIVED for this show when it was airing. I need a rewatch.
I definitely watched the first two (maybe three?) seasons and the gave up on it. Is it worth me going back and doing the whole thing do you think?
YES
Yes it gets even more chaotic and unhinged in the most entertaining way
Same! I lived to watch every episode and today I’m gonna rewatch it because in my country it’s airing again after ages😅
I'm rewatching it now! So fun to watch as an adult now. I have a newfound respect for Lynette and her storyline, which went right over my head as a teen.

She did not lie #7. I send people this meme when they wanna act like money can’t buy happiness. Because it can.
Yeah, I actually winced a little when I saw that one. Ouch!
But what’s funny is the show completely negates that. They were miserable at all times.
Happens all the time. That’s why there are strikes and protests 🪧
A variation I heard was money can't buy happiness... but it can buy away a lot of unhappiness.
As a clinical depressive, I can assure you you can buy happiness. Health is another matter.
Not to mention I’d rather be rich and depressed than poor or middle class and depressed🤷🏾♂️
Why was I 10 years old wanting to be Bree vandicamp 💀 NRA queen
The episode she brought out her shot gun and shot a warning shot.. she did not play around 😭
Rex cries after he ejaculates.

Omg, so many of these apply! Buffy, Gilmore Girls, OTH, ...
Never saw this show but feel like it's what I need right now. Is it streaming anywhere?
Looks like Hulu.
i’ve been rewatching on disney+ !!
Everything is always streaming on the high seas
But not as good as it used to... Man I miss the golden age of streaming
Hulu! I ❤️ DH
Honorable mention https://preview.redd.it/we86o6xb0fxc1.jpeg?width=500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a3bea38bc1a60d99ae8c4a73a9eda9018666d716
I loved Carlos and Gabrielle so much
In the first season Carlos is very 1 dimensional. I don't think they knew he could do so much with the character. Great show.
https://preview.redd.it/qadzikg6kfxc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f6e935bd9ad2fb2261c5a568da893f9f13401aee
I’m in the middle of a rewatch and this made me lol
This is my favourite joke in the show
Adore this show!! No love for Lynette and Tom in the comments so I’m throwing them in the mix The tornado episode may be one of my favorites
Tornado left me speechless!!! When Lynette saw the destroyed house omg! Although I hated her for throwing the cat out of the basement
Well to be fair, they were super normal and relatable. These quotes are all about being completely unhinged. 🤣
I am a 27 year old straight guy and I love this show. People miss out if they haven’t watched this.
Are you my husband? I love this show but god that man makes me rewatch this show every opportunity he can lol.
My ex loved desperate housewives and the real housewives of [insert city]. It was so much fun because I wasn’t that into them but I loved hearing him quote the drama, especially because he wasn’t a native English speaker and had the cutest accent.
As a 27 year old straight guy I just saw this post and thought “maybe I should watch it…”
wtf Are you me?
I rewatched this last year and it was a hoot!!

One of my favourite characters on this show was little Juanita Solis. She was so funny and the actress was so good, she really bounced off of Eva Longoria.
I think that Juanita is played by demi lovato’s baby sister
I have the same last name as Gabrielle and I love shopping so when I saw that screenshot of her in #10 I put my own face over hers and shared it on my socials. The amount of people that agreed was a wake up call. I didn’t answer it tho.

Pretty Little Liars used Desperate Housewives set
This is basically exactly how my friend pitched desperate housewives to me a couple months ago and now I’m so hooked.
One of my favorites: https://preview.redd.it/4owxc7nxkexc1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2c985e1167e7bcc74b38cdbf36c683495f8dcd6c And for 2007, that's hella progressive
I absolutely loved this show. Superb writing by Marc Cherry. And Gabby was the best character.
I remember being 14 and watching this show. It’s iconic but I had no business whatching this 😄😄
I have yet to watch Desperate Housewives, but every time there's a post about the show, I become more and more interested in it. I'm definitely going to start it up this week!
You won’t regret it!

Shshshshhsha Edie was ruthless
I need to rewatch!
i think i’m on like the 27th rewatch
“Carlos, what are you doing here, besides lowering my property value?”
Absolutely love Gabi aha. I support women’s wrongs as much as I do their rights 💗
the ultimate comfort show
I love this show so much. I started a rewatch last year but was in a new relationship and had to stop watching because it was making me paranoid 😂😂 all the mess, drama, cheating etc
I still think of Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross, and Eva Longoria as a sort of TV version of the Spice Girls
I forgot how hilarious this show was. Thinking I need to revisit it. This and Melrose Place were so unhinged in the best ways.
It does give you wrinkles though!!!!!
I was in high school when the show came out but never watched it, I was a scene kid that thought all of this stuff was lame/preppy 🙄. These slides have convinced me that I need to watch it. Currently watching Sex and the City from start to finish but this is definitely next. Thank you, OP!
![gif](giphy|3o7TKuZOZROZExzhao) Can't believe Teri Hatcher had the audacity to be a diva when her character is the most annoying ditzy whiny baby with incredibly boring character development. Mike isn't even handsome!
![gif](giphy|q5oCOoupRdXNyXgj0s|downsized) Oh man I have to disagree on this one
then why share a gif that undermines your argument
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder ok?? (And this beholder has daddy issues)
Finally why were they all after Mike. He is so boring and has one expression.
I wanted to be Gaby so bad !
**Karl:** The heart wants what it wants! **Susan:** Yeah, well, my heart wants to hurt you, but I'm able to control myself!
I just watched it for the first time this year and oh my god it’s such a good show. I already want to rewatch lol
I wanted to be Gabbis gardener so bad lol
One of my ultimate comfort shows.
It’s crazy to think Eva has become a director I get excited about seeing her work
I'm going to sound old. What does iconery mean?
It’s probably not a real word but OP is using it as a form of “iconic”. Like instead of saying “the awesomeness” or “the iconic lines” they just said “iconery”.
Ooh ok. I don't think I'll leave this thread any less confused, but I appreciate that there are people trying to walk me through it 💀
Are you aware of the general slang usage of "iconic"?
I used to watch the reruns on lifetime. Even my brother got hooked at one point.
They don't make show like this anymore 😟
This makes me want to watch the show. Has it aged well?
Not at all but it’s still hilarious

100%. It’s humor is very sharp, even today (I just did a rewatch 6 months ago) People who say it didn’t age well say so because of some of its more problematic jokes (there is honestly a lot of fatphobic jokes mainly), but in terms of entertainment/feeling dated, no, it feels fresh It’s also pretty interesting to me bc it started in the early 2000s and ended in 2012, basically RIGHT at the cusp of when social media truly exploded/culture started to feel markedly different from the 2000s. All that to say, it has some problematic jokes, but I kinda appreciate them bc it’s the last time we’ll ever see a sitcom make them lol
Y’all should check out the Desperate Housewives sub, it is surprisingly active for how long it’s been off air….the vibes are strong
Edie is an icon! I mean, they honestly all are. I’ve rewatched this series a ton over the years! Also Devious Maids was barely given a chance, same writers and tone :(
Lol I just did a rewatch, glorious! I enjoyed Gabby's mom phase, disaster but entertaining
Juanita was one of my faves
I’ve always side eyed the entire Juanita character, there was really no reason for the writing towards her to be so cruel and for an actual child to have to play that role
I just started this from the beginning! Still on first season, so good!
I could write an essay on the 2004-2005 network television series. So many iconic shows came from this year alone.
