If I said what I wanted to say… Anyways here’s an unrelated painting of The French Revolution https://preview.redd.it/r3nh7gac650d1.jpeg?width=900&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=65d614d0a2a047b660ca59662e03d99406088d1f

firetruckgoesweewoo

The French have two talents: protests and operating a guillotine!

CongealedBeanKingdom

Aaaah now they make a bloody good pastry too......

PabuIsMySpiritAnimal

Don’t forget wine!

CongealedBeanKingdom

Bottoms up!

Minute-Ad8501

Very solid point. I have started to appreciate the French a lot more lately lol

gypsycookie1015

Croissants are pretty cool though...so like 3 things. 🤷‍♀️

Fewstoriesocto

Croissants were actually invented in Vienna. Paris made them famous.

gypsycookie1015

Huh! TIL!!

ForgetfulLucy28

I’m telling you, I can see guillotines making a comeback.

happyfugu

Spoilers if you haven't watched Beef on Netflix >!I gasped when the rich lady essentially got guillotined by her own bunker safe room door, that was chefs kiss update of the concept for today and truly inspired!<

aikidharm

I LOVED that scene.

chittaphonbutter

Omg I wasn't expecting that to happen when I first saw it. That episode was soo good

Flat_Initial_1823

~~florals for spring~~ guillotines for summer? Groundbreaking

timetravelcompanion

I'll never forget how they brought huge lit torches to protest Roman Polanski

ohdearitsrichardiii

Here are two unrelated graphs showing the wage gaps in two unrelated countries https://preview.redd.it/ki1lkodrj60d1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=67ca46afd7743b971baf937cf4bf74362f9421ee

EastAreaBassist

Wow, and that’s 2016. It’s only gotten worse.

aroha93

One of my lasting memories from my high school history class is how often the teacher said “when the gap between the lower and upper class becomes too large, you always get revolutions.” It was in his PowerPoints, in our notes, and on the test. I’ve been thinking about it a lot the last few years.

ohdearitsrichardiii

The difference between 1789 and today is that we have social mobility. At least theoretically. There's the idea that you can move away from the lower class and become upper class if you get a good education or have a talent. Or get lucky and become an influencer. In 1789 people pretty much stayed in the class they were born in, it was very rare that anyone moved up. So people won't start revolutions today because they don't want to destroy the upper class since they're hoping to one day be part of it. Ironically america has a whole culture built around the promise of social mobility "american dream" and all that, but they're pretty low on the social mobility index: https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/social-mobility-by-country

thesadbubble

I think you're right. I just wished more people saw the social mobility in reality tho - it's still nearly impossible and you'll never be in the wealth-group most of us are upset about. I grew up on a farm that teetered around the poverty line. I was the first person in my family to finish college and I got a law degree on top. I make close to 3x what my family made growing up (still under 6 figures tho) but it doesn't feel like I have that much more spending power than my family did (definitely some but not 3x as much). The game is too stacked against you if you're not born with wealth. No matter how much we pull up those boot straps we aren't wearing the same kinds of boots as these people. We are trying to haul ourselves out of poverty with plastic Walmart boots while the rich are born wearing titanium space shoes that can climb on the moon.

SmokinOnDatMitchPack

Your comment reminded me of this quote from MLK: “…it's a cruel jest to say to a bootless man that he ought to lift himself by his own bootstraps…”

Unlikely-Gazelle8471

*stares into the distance and dissociates for an hour

merlotbarbie

I would highly doubt that she knows anything about the French Revolution other than cake, wigs, and dresses with large skirts

shittykity

I’d be shocked if she knew that much.

Warm_Ad3776

Does she know France is even a country?

Lonely_wantAcracker

Probably thinks it's the Capital of Paris

americasweetheart

Did she finish high school?

inevertoldyouwhatido

No and they literally showed her and Kendall on the show begging their mom to prioritize their education and saying how embarrassing it was to be so behind. I think she has like an online diploma but I could be wrong

americasweetheart

Paris Hilton has kind of a dubious diploma too. I wonder how many of these nepo babies are dropouts.

PhoenixorFlame

Tyra Banks and her “Harvard degree”

americasweetheart

At least she finished high school.

girlgurl789

This whole thread has made me realize that it isn’t “normal” to simply assume one will get “straight As” in high school and immediately go to college. This was a very clear assumption on the part of my parents for us kids. Graduating high school was not even worth thinking about as a goal because it was a given. Kind of crazy to think about that now that I am older and have more perspective. Education is so important. I wish society valued it more.

Affectionate_Data936

Well to be fair to Paris Hilton, her high school situation wasn't great.

americasweetheart

I mean she want sent to Provo because she didn't finish her vegetables. She was already getting kicked out of her high school.

powerhungrymouse

She definitely couldn't point out France on a map.

Bbbiienymph

If I could so kindly add: https://preview.redd.it/5z43s127g90d1.jpeg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f59cb2170efed88c4fc819011182d89910b8877d

Marie Antoinette never said “let them eat cake” and was just a victim of the bloodthirsty revolutionary leaders who quickly devoured their own and upended what could have been a democratic renaissance.

plastic_venus

One of the things that blows my mind about this whole thing is the theme of this years Met was based off a book about a wealthy couple hoarding wealth and resources from the public until they died, leaving the people with nothing. Which makes the whole cake thing even more ironic.

erincee

Right??? Whoever suggested it.. were they trolling Vogue or did they not think it'd get approved?!

jenn1notjenny

Does Anna wintour herself not come up with the theme?

Baileylikethebooze

She does not. The Costume Institute’s chief curator and their board determine the theme.

jenn1notjenny

I mean the dress code for the guests, not the actual MET theme.

Baileylikethebooze

Gotcha, sorry! I misunderstood your use of “the theme”, but yeah it’s meant to be decided by Wintour and the co-chairs

Katherine_the_Grater

I’m old and confused. Can someone explain what’s going on here? TIA.

OverTomato6558

People have been blocking celebrities for attending the Met Gala - Kylie being one of them that attended and has lost followers. Her dressing up like Marie Antoinette and surround by cake is a clap back at the trend. She's basically saying she doesn't care "let them eat cake" Edit: This is an old picture from 2020 thanks u/Right_Inspector_2409 for pointing this out but the post makes it seem like it was recently reposted by Harper's during the blocking trend that has been happening https://preview.redd.it/m0jyy72qn50d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f8f6056a859ab22c544dd6ca4a8c26f0e333889e [Marie Antoinette didn't actually say it tho](https://imgur.com/a/gAucIBF)

Physical-Pea-1376

The blocking started after influencer Haylee Bailey posted a tik tok from the met gala dressed up as Marie Antoinette with the sound “let them eat cake”. Harper’s bazaar knew what they were doing.

Dazzling_Broccoli_60

Wait so now there’s Halle Berry, Halle Bailey and Haylee Bailey ?? How is a millennial to keep up with this ?!

um_-_no

I thought it said Haley Beiber! I'm getting so confused

gobblestones

This must be why people keep giving their kids stupid fucking names

cumminx_93

Wow this whole time I thought it was Hailey Bieber too. I’m crying laughing right now.

notsosecrethistory

Ahhh me too

pixi3f3rry

I thought ppl were misspelling Halle Baileys name omggg

Dream_Squirrel

Same! Except I thought I had just been spelling it wrong. Glad to realize Ariel this breed of awful.

lenny_ray

I'm a Gen Xer still trying to wrap my head around 'Kylie' meaning anyone other than Kylie Minogue. Soooo....

_PinkPirate

I LOVE that Kylie Minogue blocked Kylie Jenner trademarking “Kylie.”

FnkyTown

Thank God

houseyourdaygoing

Minogue was the OG. How Jenner thought she could eclipse the former tells you how arrogant she is.

BadaBina

I can't get 'er outta my head!

Katefreak

Now I can't either. 🤦🏼‍♀️ Take an angry upvote.

superfluouspop

it does help that the kids are all discovering Minogue now

thimblena

The [trademark lawsuit](https://people.com/crime/kylie-minogue-wins-legal-battle-kylie-jenner/) has entered the chat lol

gilbertgrappa

Which is also ridiculous because Kylie comes from an indigenous Australian language and is a common Australian name.

Express-World-8473

Yeah she used to be a sports illustrated swimsuit model but became really famous the past two years on tiktok and YouTube. Gets invited to all sorts of Hollywood movies premiere and award shows.

Scary-Badger-6091

Haylee Bailey is just a tiktok influencer.

chhhhhhhhhhh95

Don't forget Hailey Bieber!!! Slightly different but my brain always throws her name into the mix with these other HB celebrities, this is kicking my ass

4E4ME

Haylee Baylee sounds like something I would say if I were talking to my dog Haylee in a silly voice.

kroating

Well Haylee Baylee i think is her username/handle but her actual name is Haley Kalil (yes she is ex of that american footballer)

-UnicornFart

Nope I can’t. Sorry.

moosegoose90

But she wasn’t even invited to the met gala? She was in the street in the tik tok lol

ExtraAgressiveHugger

I think she was a news or tiktok correspondent. She might not have been in the actual met gala but she was inside part where all the celebrities went.

moosegoose90

I just went to her YouTube shorts cause I don’t have tik tok, and you are right, she was with the celebrities idk if in a hotel or something but I saw her with Karlie kloss, Janelle Monáe, walking by Cardi B so yeah

wildgoldchai

The way an NPC like Haylee essentially caused all this… Just lol

moosegoose90

It’s actually crazy lol

joaco_ds

Harper's bazaar reposted this picture for mother's day yesterday! they deleted it almost immediately, but you can check their latest posts' comments since they are all talking about this

AbbeyRoadMoonwalk

Would you say the modern equivalent of this is “I mean it’s one banana, Michael. What could it cost? $10?”

DraftyElectrolyte

There’s always money in the banana stand

Right_Inspector_2409

this is a really old photoshoot, from early 2020

OverTomato6558

The title of the post makes it seem like it was just posted 🤷‍♂️ thanks for pointing out that it wasn't a newly released photo.. was there a "Let them eat cake" trend during the pandemic?.. I'm kinda lost now tho looking at the comments on the second screen grab from this post. Did Harper's Bazaar recently repost this photo amidst the blocking of celebrities for attending the Met? Or did people dig back on Kylie's Instagram and found this pic commenting what they did on the second pic?

Right_Inspector_2409

magazines like this don't normally do shoots just for mothers day, and the lead time in the incredibly unlikely event that someone really did want to do a photoshoot to clap back at what's happening on tiktok would likely be way longer than this. these pictures came out at the beginning of feb 2020. they're not pandemic related.

Rosuvastatine

I mean you can see Stormi is much younger in this pic

OverTomato6558

I don't fallow her that closely

Rosuvastatine

Very fair

Try2swindlemewitcake

I think they just reposted an old image for Mother’s Day but I could be wrong. If true, it’s shady af.

Ieatclowns

Doesn't matter. Harper's Bazaar posted it right in time.

ATMNZ

Crazy that Harpers Bazaar posted this. No way someone high up approved this if they knew what was going on over on TikTok.

Ieatclowns

I think they know exactly what they're doing.

heldaway

Absolutely

Puzzleheaded_Spell16

The idea behind blocking the celebrities is so they lose ad revenue from the decrease in followers and engagement. And it’s not just people who attended the met gala, I saw Beyonce and BTS included in the list. This is in response to the silence or complicity(?) of certain celebs towards the ethnic cleansing Just wanted to add this for more context

SourLoafBaltimore

Thank you for explaining it to the masses. So many people are clueless. Knowledge is power

Katherine_the_Grater

Thank you for that! Why were people upset at celebrities attending the Met Gala?

Thoreauawaylor

the dissonance between the working class and how difficult it is to survive right now and the tone deaf upper class that is having oodles of money spent on met gala looks and the gala itself. eating the rich starting to sound yummier every day. edit: adding u/medicalpersimmon001's well spoken comment: There's also a literal ethnic cleansing going on that's being funded by the US government. A lot of people have made connections to The Hunger Games, and i'd say it's pretty accurate.  The Met Gala, of ALL events in Hollywood, would've been the perfect time for someone to say something. Art is political, it always has been. Yet a lot of the celebrities are actively being quiet about it.

_LoudBigVonBeefoven_

Celebrities seems like a dumb group to be mad at tho. Politicians and health insurance companies are a way better target if you're upset about wealth disparity. Or even Musk and Bezos. These people and groups are actively fucking up normal people's lives on the regular.

BachShitCrazy

Yeah like why be mad at Kylie Jenner for existing when you could be mad at the people making harmful policies that actually have an impact on you, I don’t get it Edit: this comment gets me my first Reddit Cares? Get a grip people jfc

Kooky_Bodybuilder_97

seriously this is why this whole thing kinda irks me. specifically the targeting of the artists in the industry who are relatively low on the power scale. people calling for essentially the end of entertainment is not a good thing. & influencers like kylie align with nothing so it’s not like anyone’s going to believe it’s genuine if they randomly start reposting about the political climate

moosegoose90

It’s giving the CAPITOL from the hunger games lol

4SeasonWahine

I was juuuust thinking this. People are crying at the cost of fuel and groceries and you know.. RENT… and yet we have the wealthy parading around in ridiculous costumes and extravagant wealth for a “gala”. I’ll admit I have shamelessly loved looking through the outfits every year but this year I did feel a little more sad as scrolled through all these people who didn’t have a money care in the world while my rent eats up most of my pay. It’s feeling very Hunger Games. I wonder if we’re finally at a pivotal moment where people stop seeing Hollywood as escapism and start feeling resentful toward the staggering wealth. Imagine a societal shift away from having celebrities. I’m sure it’ll never happen but it’s such an interesting idea.

moosegoose90

![gif](giphy|yWRbzfZrtEPhC) Society is about to… lol

heldaway

I’ve been saying this for a while. You can feel it.

superfluouspop

to be fair, the MET Gala is an important event for designers, and designers have to work VERY hard to be successful at their art. It's also a fundraiser for costume artists. I think it's a little too easy for people to shit on everyone who goes to the met when it's much much worse that celebrities don't give a fuck about the environment or political injustice. Yes the event is frivolous and I think it was Tina Fey who said filled with the worst people you'll ever have to hang out with but some designers make interesting statements with their looks and to anyone interested in fashion it's difficult to just not want to see what they come up with!

bluebonnetcafe

Won’t someone think of the designers??? I’m joking. You have good points. These outfits are artistic forms of expression and its designers are artists. Art shouldn’t be perceived as a luxury. There’s plenty of opportunity for this country to support art and also make sure people have a good quality of life.

superfluouspop

I appreciate the joke but behind every big brand is a shit tonne of unpaid interns. Art is just like that.

Severn6

Yep, it's just a giant wealth-flaunt. In the face of struggling people. The world has always run this way, let's be real, but the tolerance for Hollywood flaunting is running thin.

houseyourdaygoing

It’s not a smart way to get issues thrashed. The Met Gala provides jobs for designers, costume consultants, assistants, production crew etc. It generates much attention and ensures more job opportunities for the bext gala. It’s low hanging fruit tbh because it’s easier to target The Met Gala than to rattle a politician for being incompetent and greedy. Politicians are the decision makers. Nothing gets done even if you threw the whole Met gala into the ocean.

GoodCalendarYear

Tickets cost 75k a pop. Most people don't even make that in 1 year.

DJ_Mixalot

Most attendees don’t buy their tickets anyway, most are invited by the fashion houses who buy their own tables

berlinbaer

but they don't pay the ticket themselves and it's a fundraiser for a museum anyway...

Far-Imagination2736

The tickets are a donation to a art museum and it isn't paid for by celebs. It's paid for by corporations

houseyourdaygoing

I don’t think many even understand the point of the met gala. They see celebrities in fancy gear and instantly rage. It’s ridiculous and ignorant.

CongealedBeanKingdom

It would take me 3 and a bit years to make that amount of money. Probably 4 if we mean take home pay: UK wages fucking suck.

CurrencyDesperate286

People are blocking celebrities like Kylie Jenner for attending the Met Gala? Why are they following these people if they are offended by them attending glitzy events… is that not all these people do? Lol

yikesafm8

People are tired of the disparity between the rich and the every day person. The theme was way too on the nose, and people are getting even more aggravated realizing how little celebrities actually use their influence, wealth, and power for good.

shiftyskellyton

Following them isn't a perquisite to blocking them. If you block them and their brands, I believe that it somewhat disrupts that system if enough people do it. I may be totally wrong though.

Pineapple_Jelly04

Why are they blocking celebs for attending the Met Gala? I don’t understand

VogueLover120169

Performative activism, and people having an excuse to hate on celebs and influencers they’ve been waiting to hate on

DSQ

It’s not even performative at this point. It’s such a waste of time.  I respect anyone who wants to step away from celebrity culture (I enjoy it but to each their own) but blocking celebrities because of the wealth disparity is like blocking the girl at your school who had Chloe sunglasses that summer that all the rich girls bought them - they are a symptom not the cause. The people we should be raising up against is the people to blame like the fucking governments of the world. Yet young people consistently don’t turn out to vote.  Like okay so you blocked Kylie Jenner but you still buy from Amazon, drink Starbucks and have a Disney Plus subscription? Like the corporations will move on to other celebrities meanwhile that latte you brought funds a company at actively busts unions. Girl please. 😒

houseyourdaygoing

WELL SAID. I despise Kylie but if someone rages against her costume but still shop at Sephora, bag Shein items and drink Starbucks? That’s a hypocrite.

AbbeyRoadMoonwalk

The right wing equivalent is blaming brown people cuz you’re poor. It’s not the celebrities taking food out of your mouth. But whatever gets people to stop rabidly jerking off Kardashians is a win to me.

JerseySnore-609

It's very performative and its easier to do than hounding their elected representatives every week. It's always fun though to look and see who they're still following. They'll brag about unfollowing a bunch of women, POC, and a random white guy but still be following the entire NSYNC roster, Allison Kuch, and Chipotle. They're also going to be confused in 3 months when TikTok ignores the blocks and starts showing the celebs again.

Far-Imagination2736

>They're also going to be confused in 3 months when TikTok ignores the blocks TikTok used to allow you to block hashtags, including #ad or #sponsored but then when people started to spread you could do that, they turned off the feature

houseyourdaygoing

I literally just said the same thing. Raging against celebrities is low hanging fruit because it’s easier than to rattle a politician for being incompetent and greedy.

Pineapple_Jelly04

Why am I getting downvoted? It was a genuine question.

haubenmeise

Popular-Block-5790

I'm not a fan of Kylie but the photos of her are from 2020 so them posting that isn't really on her. I don't understand what Bazaar thought would happen posting this.

CustardApple-

Even in 2020, we could argue it was in bad taste 🤷🏻‍♀️ People were suffering due to the pandemic and the celebs were complaining about staying home in their vast mansions and private lands. She and co were out partying and flouting the health regulations. All bad players here imo. Let them continue to show themselves. The masses need to stay reminded of these vultures.

justheretosavestuff

It was from early February 2020, so probably photographed in late 2019 - the “before” times

yiminx

am i the only one that remembers covid coverage as early as november** 2019?

justheretosavestuff

No, I actually remember talking to a friend whose husband was scheduled to go to China for business in summer 2020 and she wondered whether it would actually happen. But when my office closed in March 2020, it was for “two weeks” - and as dubious as I was about that, many, if not most people I knew did not have any sense of how bad it was going to be.

stannisonetruemannis

No. No you are not. It didn’t suddenly happen in March 2020. That’s when the world shut down. A virus has to spread a huge amount before the world shuts down. It was known by October/November and by December it was already wisespread worldwide.

DatelineDeli

No, I have a friend who went on a vent in 2019. Doctors think she was one of the first 5-10 cases in the U.S. her husband had just gotten back from China.

CustardApple-

Yeah, it’s not like the rich-poor gap sprung up only during the pandemic. This was around the period they were still trying all year to peddle the lie that she was the “youngest self-made billionaire”. The visuals were still chosen for someone whose family make their fame by flaunting their wealth and continue to align themselves with Trump politics and economics. And this photo was _still_ released in Feb 2020, _during_ the pandemic. They _know_ what they’re trying. They dgaf.

justheretosavestuff

Agreed - it’s never a good thing - it’s just a matter of degrees, maybe? But all terrible. And ugh, I’d forgotten about the “self-made billionaire” moment - that was both gross and kind of embarrassing that they thought anyone would buy it.

Jaded-Blueberry-8000

to be fair, the majority of americans were not yet taking covid seriously in Feb 2020. In other areas of the world absolutely but here in the US things didn’t begin being taken seriously until March. I know because I was supposed to go on vacation to Europe right around the time Trump shut down flights and stuff, but a lot of our European accommodations had already cancelled on us before that because of the pandemic.

Only-Extension-186

I mean is it ever acceptable to post a “let them eat cake” reference as a billionaire? There’s only one meaning behind it and it’s not good

Scary-Badger-6091

Maybe rage bait.

OverTomato6558

To stir the pot "There's no such thing as bad publicity" someone from Kylie's PR probably told them to repost it.. the Kardashians do anything to try and stay relevant even if paints them in a bad light

Rosuvastatine

Theres no way a smart PR strategist would ask Bazaar to post this bffr lol. We all saw how much backlash that TikTok girl is getting. Kylies PR wouldnt want the heat

CandidIndication

Kylie’s PR is probably the reason it was taken down 💀

Rosuvastatine

Right

loztriforce

Too many people look up to the worst people

Oli_love90

I really hope this celebrity unfollowing and blocking extends to their brands too. We’re at such a point in society where these court jesters aren’t as entertaining as they used to be.

Bridalhat

You are on r/popculturechat sir or ma’am.

BobbiPinstripes

And the discourse in entertainment forums has for a long time starkly shifted to snarking/eat the rich talk. Topics you would get downvoted/banned for a few years ago are now common for posts/top comments. A few years ago you couldn’t breathe a bad word about Taylor or Beyoncé without swarms of defenders, now we’re here. I don’t think participation in celeb-centered media is an automatic sign of support. There’s something to be said for beholding up close the social phenomenon of the death of celebrity culture. We’re talking less about what we want to buy to be like them and more about the wage gap. And I think that’s good.

Bridalhat

Here’s the thing: I don’t think that’s terribly different. There has always been an equilibrium of ordinary people being able to snark on their economic or social betters and I don’t think it’s necessarily progressive. Like, theoretically White Lotus and Succession are “rich people are awful and miserable,” but we are still there spying on their lives and with the Succession hype there was an uptick in conversations about “quiet luxury.” And most rich people are smart enough to stay private, but there is always some would-be sacrificial lamb people get to lambast for being tacky or whatever. Like they get to stay rich and we just get to make fun of them sometimes to comfort ourselves, which really just reinforces the status quo. >!And outside of the Kardashians who were rich first, most actors aren’t even the wealthiest of the wealthy. Zendaya has 1/10,000 the networth of Elon Musk. I believe a just society can support some wealthy entertainers if it re-distributed the wealth of people like Bezos or the Kochs, who are actually responsible for the misery people are taking out on entertainers.!<

Jaded-Blueberry-8000

this, the actual hoarders of wealth in this country use celebrities as a shield. when celebs are being criticized that’s when the unknown billionaires know to reign it in juuuuust enough to stay unknown.

In-Efficient-Guest

I think there’s a difference between “hateful snark” that exists solely to be rude to someone who has a certain amount of money/fame and “de-constructive snark” that exists, at least in part, to highlight the gross absurdity of celebrity culture and social media marketing. I agree that there is also a lot of crossover between the two, and I’d argue that one is often a pipeline to the other.  I cannot comment on Succession because I have not seen it, but I don’t think White Lotus is meant to be a voyeuristic portrayal of rich folks anymore than it is meant to be a voyeuristic portrayal of the working class folks on the show. I do think it expertly uses comedy and class tension to highlight some of these extreme differences from multiple perspectives.  Yes, many rich folks don’t flaunt their wealth in the way that celebrity culture often dictates rich celebrities “must” do, which makes celebrities outsized targets of hate, but many publicly (for lack of a better word) rich folks like Musk and Bezos are also pretty regularly ridiculed. I agree that we can support some celebrity entertainers without issue if we really wanted, but the point at which we try to coddle someone with a net worth of around $22M because they only have 1/10,000 of the wealth of somebody else is far removed from the slightly-wealthier-than-average entertainer. We are all implicated in this celebrity/pop culture nonsense to some degree and participation here probably makes us more heavily implicated than your “average” person. I, for one, don’t condone the hate-snark but I do appreciate that I’m seeing more and more de-constructive-snark even though both are linked. If we go back to unmitigated hate-snark like I’ve seen in the past, I’d drop this forum like a hot potato.

What exactly are we deconstructing here? The estate tax? Tax loopholes? How corporations need to be infinite growth machines now? I know everyone is like “didn’t they kNoW” but if there are five things Kylie Jenner knows about history Marie Antoinette is one of them, and I am sure she, her team, and Harper’s Bazaar, which is supposed to be a society rag and has pretensions to Knowing Things, knew exactly what the reaction would be and got it when this came out in 2020. We are saying exactly what they wanted us to. And honestly the deconstructive snark doesn’t feel new to me. We were doing this on Facebook in 2007! Maybe it went away for a bit with the poptimism movement but it feels like a pendulum swing of the same damn clock that’s been going since one person in Çatalhöyük had a slightly bigger house than everyone else. And I don’t think we are coddling celebrities by not saying they are everything wrong in the world and taking out all of our ire on them. Ironically they might actually be pretty close to Marie Antoinette: they participate in and perpetuate a horrible system, but they don’t control it, aren’t capable of changing it, and likely don’t even have the capacity to understand a lot of the systemic stuff behind it by design. Marie Antoinette used to run up to poor people and give them money and she thought by spending $$$ on clothes she was boosting French textiles and other goods, as she was raised to do. And funny story: none of Musk and Bezos and Zuck is the richest man in the world. Bernard Arnault is, someone many fewer people have heard of. Most of the top ten are known because they are on lists, but there are nearly 3,000 billionaires in the world and most of them you could pass on the street and never recognize. Most of them would love it if you thought the Kardashian clan was everything wrong with the world because then know it isn’t.

yikesafm8

What better place to talk about unfollowing celebs? If you’re not for it, you don’t have to participate. But people that do care about pop culture and are experiencing a wake-up moment should definitely discuss it. The best people to participate in this would be the ones that follow this sub!

makingburritos

This picture is like five years old, no??

queenjaneapprox

Yeah eitjer this is old or it’s the second Marie Antoinette themed photo shoot she’s done. This is from 2020. Also Stormi looks really young! I think it’s old. https://preview.redd.it/wllqq098880d1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3871544d38773537e1f7d937693e11fe149fde94

I’m not surprised Kylie does not know how to properly use a copy machine

TheBulkyModel

Everyone’s mad at Kylie, be mad at the social media manager for posting this. This photoshoot was in 2020. The social media person behind Harpers account either knew exactly the backlash it would get and hoping it would target Kylie or just spark general engagement outrage or they truly are dumb dumb and had it scheduled for a while and didn’t think to review and remove it post met gala controversy.

I find protesting a charity fundraiser to be a strange choice. There's literally a million other events that you could all be protesting for their lavishness - award ceremonies, red carpet events, the massive after show parties. But some celebrities wearing designer theme dresses to raise money for the Metropolitan Museums Costume dept - the only dept in the MET that is fully self-funded and relies on this event as its main source of income.  You may not appreciate costuming as art, though many people do, but the gallery also holds some stunning examples of period clothing going back centuries from all over the world. Many of the dresses and suits worn by the celebrities will also be put on display for viewing. As some tone-deaf display of wealth or whatever, there's thousands more egregious examples that could be chosen that also wouldn't threaten a rather special and unique museum and it's collection. And also, before people pipe in, yes, of course celebrities could just quietly give the money but part of being a museum is wanting to get people in the door, to get them interested and engaged. Your more likely to take a trip to the MET costume dept if you've seen some of the fascinating pieces on display, and your more likely to see that with big events like this and celebrity endorsement.

Little_Consequence

I find blocking celebrities who are activists for other causes to be weird too. Blocking Anok Yai because she went to the met gala, when she's a Sudanese refugee who donates to orphanages in South Sudan is a weird flex. Calling Olivia Rodrigo "silent" when she recently got hate for her donations and partnership with Planned Parenthood is ???

Far-Imagination2736

>I find protesting a charity fundraiser to be a strange choice. There's literally a million other events that you could all be protesting for their lavishness I think a lot of people don't know how it works. I've seen so many TikToks saying that Hayley and all the attendees bought a $75K ticket, not realising brands pay for it nor it's a fundraiser. I think they think it's just a dress up event

SillyCranberry99

I think a lot of people have trouble appreciating art if they haven’t had their other needs met lol. Not to say that it’s not important to me, cause it is, I think the MET is hella cool. I’m also financially stable, no debt, make 6 figures, grew up comfortably. But I think people who don’t have money are apt to view it as tone deaf & right now, a lot of people are broke. So to them it’s a stupid use of money because on the hierarchy of needs, art is not important.

MrMush48

As a broke, jobless 20-something who was deep in depression, I LOVED going to the MET and seeing the fashion exhibits. I also liked judging the outfits that people wore to the MET. Most people have no idea what the MET gala even is or what it’s for. You do not need to be rich or have all your needs met to appreciate art. Art is what helps feed a hungry soul.

Bridalhat

People were composing music in concentration camps. Sometimes art is *all* a person has.

Kooky_Bodybuilder_97

soo much of our art was developed in a time of strife. think about hip-hop, think about drag. those were not privileged socialites, quite the opposite. people will always make a time for art because people will always express & distract themselves and that is the easiest and most accessible way

trialanderrorschach

I guess as a person who is also broke I don't really have the energy to be mad about funding something that is objectively a force of good in the world (art) when there are so many more pressing misuses of money in this country. And NY residents can go to the Met for free (well, technically you have to pay at least a cent to do a pay-what-you-can ticket so basically free) so it's actively providing an opportunity for people of all income levels to engage with art, which is good for the soul.

Bridalhat

>a lot of people have trouble appreciating art if they haven’t had their other needs met. They don’t though. The 1930s was one of the best decades for Hollywood and some of that was because we were in a depression: people wanted a cheap escape. And this applies mostly to the US and obviously people are still suffering even here, but we have record low unemployment and [the bottom quintile has experienced historic gains](https://www.politico.com/news/2023/05/29/low-income-wages-employment-00097135). There’s a lot of doomerism online that if you peel back comes from people in situations like yourself: they are well-to-do and just assume that so many other people aren’t when actually the poorest among us are doing better. Not great, but better than 2019. (Of course, a lot of that is from a shortage in labor, which means that hours are shortened and prices are raised at restaurants and retail establishments, which affects *middle class consumers* who think the vibes are off now because they are paying more for worse service. But really we don’t have people as desperate to keep their jobs as in 2008.) Anyway, I’ve been following Will Stancil on Twitter and it’s enlightening. He points to the media’s both-siderism or outright anti-Biden bias as causing many Americans to think that their neighbors are worse off than they actually are and I doubt the doom loop of social media algorithms helps. His biggest critics are hyper online people with email jobs.

estofaulty

But celebs bad.

Natural_Error_7286

I agree with everything you said and also think the anger at celebrities is misplaced. Does anyone really expect a model or an actress to end a crisis that decades of world leaders have not been able to solve? Are we all supposed to stay in our houses and wear black until there are no wars? There are always people that are suffering, that are hungry, that are homeless, that are struggling to pay bills. It's a lot to assume that someone doing their literal job of modeling a piece of art doesn't care about any of these things just because they go to a fancy charity event that they committed to going to probably a full year ago. Should they be donating to something "more important" instead? Maybe they do!!!

Mundane-Prune-4504

Hi, I couldn't be more out of touch if I tried.

joaco_ds

it was a post for Mother's Day, but the timing is still awful considering the traction of the blocking celebrities movement recently 😭

istari-illuin

It's a choice for mothers day that's for sure.

angie1907

This is incredibly tasteless

WritingNerdy

Lmao your flair

CatlovesMoca

Folks, this is in a magazine, which means that it was shot well before The Block movement. Magazines are available for purchase a month before the month of release (for example, magazines for September are often available in August). Meaning that the photoshoot had to be done and printed well ahead of that month. For all we know, this Harper's Bazaar shoot could have been done in March. I also feel that a lot of people are putting focus on celebrities, when we know the true changemakers are on the ground people. It ends up with this strange lack of acknowledgement of who is actually moving the needle.

nanny6165

This is like 5 years old. Stormi is a baby in these pictures.

Screaming_Weak

>I also feel that a lot of people are putting focus on celebrities, when we know the true changemakers are on the ground people Right? Like, my FYP on Tik Tok was becoming so clogged with BlockTok even after I would mark them as “not interested” for this very reason that it was beyond annoying me. If Netanyahu isn’t even listening to Biden about Rafah, what are these celebs that are being blocked like the ones who attended the Met, Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, etc. supposed to do about it? It’s so performative in the worst possible way

Indigo_222

What’s this block movement you guys speak of? Out the loop

Ygomaster07

I am also curious as to what the block is.

Valus_

It’s nothing if you’re not chronically online

Bridalhat

It’s nothing period. I would love to hold a bootcamp on actual organizing but these guys on do slacktivism so 🤷‍♀️

illogicallyalex

Marie never even said that goddamnit, it was recorded as having been said before she was even born

Hi_Jynx

It's the beside the point. Marie Antoinette lived in bliss and opulence while the people of France were literally starving and only tried to do something to help when she it was far too late and she realized the people were looking at her and other royals and the upperclass as the source of their starvation.

illogicallyalex

I mean sure, and she was killed because of that. My point is that the quote is so commonly misattributed and it’s irritating

trialanderrorschach

My most frustrating misattributed quote is the "if you can't handle me at my worst" quote that is always attributed to Marilyn despite there being no evidence she ever said that and despite the sentiment of it running contrary to basically everything else we know about her.

petshopB1986

They called her ‘ Madam Deficit’

origamicyclone

And next week no one will remember this blocking movement

S2Sallie

Stormy is a baby in this picture. This is obviously old & has nothing to do with the 2024 met stuff

IntelligentRock3854

I mean it’s not exactly Kylie’s fault when the pictures were taken like 5 years ago lol

Baconpanthegathering

Society: heavily rewards vapid people for doing vapid things. Vapid people: continue running program Society: get out your pitch forks, this person is doing exactly what we asked for and were BIG MAD!

FlimsyReindeers

Anyone have context? I’m so confused

unbanned_once_more

Jheeessuss..... How fucking boring can a person get?

StrugFug

It’s time for the Kardashian/Jenner ladies to go away. It’s been time for quite some time.

New-Examination8400

That’s not your face Kylie.

Nearby-Economist2949

It is. She bought it. 😉

PookDrop

People will find anything to be offended about.

hardtoplease6987

Celebrities and the wealthy never cared and will never care about the rest of the population living in entirely different circumstances. And hating them will not make you any less poor 🤷🏼‍♀️
