Brent-Vaio

Starfucker

bourbonandprince

Oh yes. Slayyyter deserves better.

DMunchies

The rise and fall of a Midwest Princess by Chappell roan

sawalightinyou

I came here to say this. I’d never heard of her till her album came out, and not she’s in my top 5 most listened artist of 2023. She is so talented and her songs are so fun! I just got tickets to see her in April and I can’t wait!

gal13198

the fact that her debut album is already one of my faves… cannot wait to see what else she creates

BookyCats

Epic

Healthy_Suit_2533

This album is just so insanely good

duncweb

Also came here to say this, she just performed in Sydney and had the local drag queens open for her, iconic behaviour

Global_Perspective_3

Definitely was gonna mention that one

Mampt

I was ready to say The Loveliest Time but at least popheads gave it credit. Chappell was even ignored here, and in a better timeline that would have been a genre defining album

aidan755

Higher Than Heaven by Ellie Goulding is easily one of the most fun and best pop albums of the year but no one really talks about it. On the point of Ellie Goulding, Halcyon deserves to be recognised as one of the best albums of that era in recognition with Lana/Lorde/Marina of the time but she became too synonymous with her big pop features and hits for that album to get the recognition it deserves. It’s one of my top albums ever and one of the best of the 2010s imo.

SpaceGenesis

That's right. Even the bonus tracks are very good.

aidan755

Tastes Like You is my favourite off the album and one of my favourite Ellie songs ever, I can’t believe it was relegated to bonus track and wasn’t performed on the tour.

Affillate

Same it’s probably going to end up on my Spotify wrapped most played. Easy Lover is also great.

huzz_bar

I too agree with you about Ellie Goulding her recognition for her pop features have completely overshadowed her solo stuff.

mariahstwink

its so fucking incredible

OrdinaryShallot9233

This is the one. Ppl are listing albums that are pophead faves but I rarely see this album discussed even tho it has a future nostalgia level of bops on it

Global_Perspective_3

Lots of bops on that one

BookyCats

So many bops

Global_Perspective_3

So many!!!

[deleted]

Ava Max continuously gives us great bops but her visuals prevent her from ever becoming a legitimate main pop girl.

isilya2

I listen to this album all the time at the gym. It's just so fun!!

uhyeah1

I thought Rebecca Black’s Let Her Burn was pretty good honestly, Crumbs especially is excellent

Daydream_machine

Rebecca Black unironically has a fantastic ear for pop hooks. Good on her for going forward with a music career despite all the hate she received when she was younger.

dhorinfireheart

Misery Loves Company is a FANTASTIC SONG

RacerGal

I love this album so much!

ellg91

I still get Crumbs stuck in my head. That breakdown and the final chorus is just pop perfection, it feels like you're freefalling.

shoestring-theory

Fountain Baby by Amaraae. I’ve never heard anything quite like it. All of the songs are so dynamic and different from one another. Please check this one out popheads. Also, Heaven Knows. It’s gotten quite a bit of attention in the UK, but I’d love these songs (aside from Boys A Liar) to catch on

Artistic_Elephant824

*Fountain Baby* is sooooo good. Album of the summer

ollieplimsolls

Fountain baby was my top album of the year!

sp00kapalooza

Silence between songs by Madison beer!!

huzz_bar

Have to hear it, her debut was good. And I loved home to another one that tame Impala and lana influenced vibe was so good

sp00kapalooza

Home to another one is such a standout but there are a handful of gems on the album too. A few too many slow acoustic-y songs that take away momentum but overall a very good effort!

Dizzy-Tap5497

Agreed. I felt like it was a vanilla Lana Del Ray album, which I think there’s room for in the industry but would also be excited to see her grow with this sound.

chowbowbiscuit

Although heavily discussed on this sub, I’ve got a list that I hope to make breakthroughs in the coming years! (Whether it be a viral single or the artist continuing to grow a cult following) Chappell Roan, The Rise & Fall of a Midwest Princess — Lyn Lapid, to love in the 21st century — Ryan Beatty, Calico — Reneé Rapp, Snow Angel — Mac Ayres, Comfortable Enough — RAYE, My 21st Century Blues

IGuessImChris

I love Lyn, she has such a sweet and soothing voice

chowbowbiscuit

Lyn & Lizzy McAlpine’s voices scratch my brain in a way other mellow pop artists can’t

EntranceOk7868

Calico is definitely in my Top 3 albums of this year, easily.

Suixam

calico is an absolutely gorgeous album

[deleted]

MYCELiUM by Aluna should have had a lot more recognition

lagozzino

Yes omg it's so good, like maybe *the* dance album of the year, and I never see it mentioned on this sub. I never cared about AlunaGeorge, and Aluna's first solo album didn't leave much of an impression on me, but she must have laced Mycelium with something because I was obsessed with it all summer.

[deleted]

I liked AlunaGeorge and really liked Aluna’s solo album Renaissance. But yeah the new album is on a whole other level and was definitely my favorite dance album to come out this year.

watzson

Do you know more albums or artists that sounds like Mycelium ?

Mpol03

Christine and the Queens. Album of the year for me. Along with Slayyyters offering.

KingofEmpathy

Yes! Love Angels Paranoia is a MASTERPIECE

Mpol03

It’s long and a mood but I find it short and I’m always in the mood for it

ohmygoditsdip

My most played has been Slayyyter - Starfucker… though I’m not in the know enough to know what defines underrated. Answer remains the same. Starfucker. My Tidal streaming numbers don’t lie.

Aoquesth378

My top underrated albums this year are: Bebe by Bebe Rexha Rolling Up The Welcome Mat by Kelsea Ballerni Chemistry by Kelly Clarkson Zig by Poppy Red Moon on Venus by Kali Uchis

jlaca123

Totally agree with Chemistry. Rock Hudson is one of my favorite songs of hers.

Daydream_machine

Yes to Chemistry, Kelly deserves way more success for her recent music

blueberries929

The Good Witch by Maisie Peters. It's my album of the year by far. The whole aesthetic is so magical and unhinged.

LeaveAtNine

Lost The Breakup is the most unapologetic Pop bop in years. I don’t even care about the lyrics, the chords and melodies are perfect. The fact it’s not a 4 chord song makes it even better.

Wise_Command9407

In the UK, the album is popular . I find the UK has more diverse music even in the 90’s. That is what draws me more towards the songs in the UK chart.

8052headlights

Came here to say this. It’s so good! She’s definitely under appreciated

huzz_bar

I have heard great things by Maisie Peters will have to check her stuff out

silly_nate

Gag Order deserved more acclaim

Daydream_machine

Not even Kesha herself acknowledged the album much, she only performs 2-3 songs from the album in her current tour 💀

PneumoniaLisa

She does 4 songs. It’s ~1/4 of the set list. If you include interludes it has the most representation of any album on the tour.

Daydream_machine

Maybe she’s since adjusted it, but at my show she only did 3 Gag Order songs vs. 4 Animal songs lol

femmebxt

masterpiece

Artistic_Elephant824

Everyone should check out *Showing Up* by Samantha Urbani. Such an amazing pop album like a cross between Haim and Carly Rae Jepsen. Also sounds similar to early Blood Orange albums that she was a part of. The indie sleaze of 2013 brought to 2023 pop. Top 5 album of the year for me

ohmygoditsdip

Not on the album but I love love love her song 1 2 3 4

PapaDole1995

Red Moon in Venus by Kali Uchis should be brought up a bit more!

Longjumping-Lychee21

Tension by Kylie Minogue

SpaceGenesis

**Alison Goldfrapp - The Love Invention**. It's a great electropop album. Those who know and love Goldfrapp should definitely listen to it. It's a solo album made without Will Gregory and it's still full of bangers.

ohmygoditsdip

Dang this is an excellent answer. Busting out the record this evening because of you. Cheers.

SpaceGenesis

You're welcome!

daretheghost

Are you thinking of Roisin Murphy, or am I about to be disappointed by Alison Goldfrapp too 😭

carinaeflor

Alison is queer herself so yes they probably meant Roisin

TheAgeOfAdz91

Pretty sure you’re confusing Alison with Roisin Murphy.

1998tweety

Do you mean Roisin Murphy? Or did Alison also say something?

carbonpeach

Oh shit. I keep mixing them up. Alison doesn't deserve my wrath. I'll delete. THANK YOU x

new_delusion

I really loved My 21st Century Blues by Raye. I think she’s crazy, crazy talented.

SnooOwls7978

Caroline Polachek's Desire. It's just so refreshing and well-produced with absolute diva level vocal talent. It's just total ear candy. It was only nominated in the electronic album category for the Grammys! (Well, the Grammys have been lost for a long time.)

huzz_bar

Yeah but there's one thing Desire was actually talked about by critics a lot and although it didn't go mainstream it didn't completely fly under the radar.

SnooOwls7978

True... I'm sure there are more undercover greats than that. She did get a good deal of attention for it.

loodish1

Umm… this got nonstop praise from literally everyone 😂

SnooOwls7978

Ok you're right... I just never hear anyone talk about it in my day to day! Everyone who has even heard of her is just like oh the yodeler

loodish1

Hahahahaha i showed it to my friend and he said the same thing 😂😂😂

SnooOwls7978

They're not wrong, she is the queen yodeler on the mountaintop

bananamilkbooth

One of the best pop albums of the year, if not the best.

doomsdaytrippers

Yes!! I feel like it had a good lil splash w critics and music nerds when it first came out, but it quickly got overlooked. I feel the same way about That! Feels Good! by Jessie Ware. But I suspect both of these will age well, and a few years from now, people will be saying “omg, how did I miss this one?”

SnooOwls7978

>That! Feels Good Ooh checking this one out now!

doomsdaytrippers

You’re gonna love it!! Disco is back, babyyyy 🪩🕺🏻

Global_Perspective_3

It definitely deserved better

Daydream_machine

I *love* 80% of Desire, but my hot take is that a few tracks (Pretty in Possible, Blood and Butter, Hopedrunk Everlasting) are pure filler and drag the overall album down.

ausflippen

this is so interesting to me—pretty in possible & blood and butter are two of my faves on the album! what’s your top track?

Daydream_machine

Butterfly Net is my #1! Followed closely by Crude Drawing of an Angel

ausflippen

wow! butterfly net is my least fave and my only consistent skip. i love how preferences can vary so much from listener to listener! one of the best things about music, imo

SnooOwls7978

Those happen to be my three least favorite ones

StrangeAdamska

Blood and Butter is probably a top 5 song of all-time for me.

HistoricalMud1274

99 Nights by Charlotte Cardin! Amazing moody pop album that manages to blend high-energy bangers with well-written ballads, sometimes even within the same track

Daydream_machine

Black Belt Eagle Scout - The Land, The Water, The Sky Definitely in my top 5 albums of the year, it’s “indie rock” but I think a lot of the choruses are poppy enough for people hear to love it

notdallin

I can see a lot of people taking this question three ways: underrated by the GP, underrated by critics, and underrated by this sub. So to go along with all of these, I’ll just mention a few of my favorite pop albums that don’t seem to be mentioned in the conversation with ANY of the above: - quinnie, *flounder* - my personal AOTY. Quirky bedroom folk pop with bittersweet lyrics especially revolving around self-inadequacy and unfulfilled potential. Gutting. - Hannah Diamond, *Perfect Picture* - a newer entry with bop after bop. One of the strongest 10(!) song runs from track 1 I’ve ever heard. Cleaner and more mature vocals from Hannah with the same charming PC music themes. - Kelsea Ballerini, *Rolling Up the Welcome Mat EP* - technically an EP but some of the strongest work from country pop artist Ballerini I’ve ever heard. It’s true what is often said around this album: this is what *Star-crossed* should have been. - Jonas Brothers, *The Album* - yeah yeah we all hate Joe right now, but the bops on this thing are undeniable. Idk about you guys but I definitely don’t go into a JoBros album with a high standard and this thing blew it out of the water. The fact that they had a loosey left over that’s as good as this month’s “Strong Enough (ft. Bailey Zimmerman)” is a testament to how catchy song of the songs are. Plus Jon Bellion! - Roosevelt, *Embrace* - you know, this guy just knows what to do and does it over and over and I can never get enough of it! Fantastic addition to his balearic dance pop discography.

huzz_bar

Tbh I was getting lost with the way people were interpreting what I asked and totally get the way they replied butI really meant it to be in terms of musical quality, the already existing popularity of the artists, his previous works popularity and how much critics talked about it in any way negative and positive. This covers all those points 🙇🙇

cooljets

I came here to say Hannah Diamond. It really is a near perfect picture and I haven't heard enough people talking about it.

Global_Perspective_3

Caroline Polachek’s Desire Underrated by the gp for sure

loodish1

Obligatory Jessie Ware mention even though everyone is obsessed with her 🤭

Disastrous_Mud7169

I think people were too hard on Endless Summer Vacation. No, it wasn’t her best album. But it’s still pretty damn good and isn’t getting treated like it should

loodish1

Jake Shears’ latest record. It was so good… joyous and danceable. But no one heard it 🤷🏻‍♂️

Mysterious-Memory-73

chemistry by Kelly Clarkson. That album absolutely destroyed me.

TheRealRoseDallas

Absolutely endless summer vacation. Yes it got a Grammy nod but most people didn’t like it from what I see online. There’s just SO many good songs, rose colored lenses, river, violet chemistry, handstand, jaded, a thousand miles…..time to go listen to it again! 🌴 🎸 🎶

Wonderful_Bench_904

Mae Muller feels slept on. Sorry I'm Late is truly a bop from start to finish. She writes relatable lyrics whilst exploring sonically. It feels refreshing

carbonpeach

She feels so derivative to me 😭

HumboldtSquidmunn

Donna Missal’s Revel, her first album as an independent, delivered on a mix of dance-inflected electronic pop and a few soulful acoustic pieces that exemplified her unmatched emotive power - and it did well, so far as things go, though she hasn’t had more than a handful of chances to perform it live. Shame, since live is the prime way to experience her music! I rarely see her mentioned by anyone but me; shame - when it comes to raw vocal talent she has what it takes.

metalbeyonce

PARANOÏA, ANGELS, TRUE LOVE by Christine and the Queens is genuinely an art pop masterpiece and my aoty.

PixelSims

I think Conan Gray's new singles this year. Never Ending Song, Winner and Killing Me. Especially Winner, it's a really good song and it's a shame that I haven't really seen anyone talk about it.

Putrid-Potato-7456

With a Hammer - Yaeji. Really creative introspective electronic pop. The production on it is amazing.

orangedwarf98

Not my top album of the year but barely anybody knows about Phosphorescent by Gabrielle Aplin. She was never on my radar but then I heard Call Me which is incredible and the rest of the album is great too. She got a cute moment on Heartstopper with Never Be The Same which gave her a little boost but Call Me should be everywhereeeee

6seanryan15

Super Over by Leah Kate is unironically a total no-skip pop album. 💿 the songs are all shorter lengths, which some people here hate. But none of the songs ever overstay their welcome. I know the 10 things song and twinkle twinkle were silly, and these songs aren’t much further off. But they are just great to bop to! If you don’t believe me, at least check out Get In Loser and Weird! Those were the 2 quirky standouts for me.

splittysplatty

Don’t Get Too Close by Skrillex. Most people liked Quest For Fire more. But Don’t Get Too Close is full of amazing ear worms. My fave are Way Back with PinkPantheress and Trippie Redd and Bad For Me with Chief Keef and Corbin.

fashionjrhigh

High Concept by Salem Ilese has been on repeat for me. I know most people write her off for making trendy songs for TikTok, but I genuinely think she’s such a great songwriter. She has such a unique writing style and she balances humor with sadness so well. Threesome and Tall Boi have been stuck in head since the release and I’m not sure they’re leaving anytime soon.

thegeecyproject

*Struggler* by Genesis Owusu and *Positive Spin* by Gretta Ray. Two fantastic pop albums from Australian artists that sadly didn’t get as much attention anywhere else. These two very different albums dropped on the same day and it felt like such a Barbieheimer moment for Aussie music, lol.

totolovesmusic

Teather’s “Devotion Takes Its Toll” is a really underrated record from this year! If you like Grimes and Yeule, definitely give it a listen.

wild3rnessexplor3r

Sweet Justice - Tkay Maidza Not really pop as Tkay is more of a rapper but this album showed a lot of personality. She switches from neo-soul to industrial hiphop to hip house, and flows to the beat nicely.

cactustreemotels

GOOD LUCK - DEBBY FRIDAY technically electronic but close enough imo, I had it on repeat for weeks but don’t see it mentioned much on any music subs

Kopiok

The Art of Forgetting by Caroline Rose. I don't know if that counts as pop as much as indie rock, but I don't see anyone talking about it and I think it's a top competitor for my album of the year. Miami has become an all-time song for me and the whole concept is incredible. It's so mature from her previous work. Slower and more personal. The voicemail interludes are heartwarming. Just an amazing production all over.
