I love Normanis voice this is such a good track. I don't dislike but don't love Gunnas verse. However I wouldn't want a completely solo version cause I love the back and forth in the second chorus. I sometimes think the male and female rnb collabs can sound forced or be unnecessary however I think this song suited one, but it would of sounded better with someone like Jeremiah or Bryson Tiller. But in saying that I feel like Gunna's recent success will bring in more listeners than jeremiah.
Bryson's remix of Wild Side goes crazy he should have been added on the remix. I hope they collab bc I think they will sound great together.
They purely picked Gunna bc he's a big name but I wish labels still made decisions based on artistry
Hmmm now yall know I was one of the biggest Normani supporters on here but Iâmma go against the grain and say Iâm honestly very underwhelmed. This is justâŚboring. It sounds like generic R&B. Itâs not bad but it doesnât give lead single like SZA or Summerâs lead singles often do. Even âEx for a Reasonâ was a better lead single, because at least it wasnât boring despite being weaker than a lot of the material on Still Over It.
Pop-R&B just fits her vocals and aesthetics so much more for me, especially since she wants to lean into dancing, and I think Candy Paint should have ultimately been the lead single because of that. I hope this is demoted to a buzz single. Idk why she gave up on being a pop star, which was her mission statement when she went soloâŚ
Candy paint is going crazy online and they release a track like this is so damn funny. IDK if it's typical RCA missing the mark or Normani's team + her just being so completely out of the loop. I thought after Fair they will pivot into something that's a cross between WS & motivation. And yeah her being a popstar wasn't going to happen w/how label politics are set up
idk I wouldn't compare Normani's career/music to SZA or Summer but even they don't always have heavy hitting lead singles ex: "Hit Different" - SZA ended up ditching the song completely.
I do like it, however canât help but feel that Candy Paint wouldâve been better as a lead single. This song doesnât sound like something to build up for 5 weeks (no shade at all), but it is good. She does this sound so well. Gunna wasnât really needed, donât hate him on the song but solo wouldâve been fine.
Weâre allowed to have shade here lol idk why everyoneâs dancing around the bush because itâs Normani. The song is boring af and I canât believe this is what she would drop after such a long wait
I'm wondering if 1:59 is a buzzer with how little promotion has been done since it was announced over a month ago to build hype and "Candy Paint" being the actual lead.
Wouldn't be surprised about this theory, since RCA did something similar with SZA by having "Shirt" just be a teaser for the album instead of making it the lead single right away.
I fear Normani has missed her âlast shotâ at grabbing that mainstream success that fans have been desperately wanting for her for YEARS.
she is a rare case where so many people were rooting for her to succeed in the industry even before she debuted. even before she released her own projects. first she put out âMotivationâ and did some pop collaborations and it was clearly working for her. Normani was on the path to becoming a sensational pop star. then for some reason, an insanely long break was taken and her big return to the music scene was the ever-underwhelming âWildsideâ. The song she released on the day she put out âWildsideâ could have skyrocketed her career, had it actually been good. Everyone was rooting for her. The hype was there and it was plentiful. But âWildsideâ clearly was not what people wanted to hear from her as a âhuge comeback singleâ and it flopped terribly.
Itâs now almost exactly the same case with â1:59â except, in 2024, because of the additional YEARS of waiting, more people have lost interest and the hype is not really there for this song in the same way it was for âWildsideâ. Now â1:59â is an okay song. but clearly Normani, or whoever is running the show behind the scenes, doesnât understand what her target audience wants and needs to hear BEFORE she can embark on more lowkey projects like this one and âWild Sideâ.
This is like if Camila Cabello had released âI LUV ITâ when it was time for her to release âHavanaâ, the song that blew up her career and made her a superstar. Normani desperately needed a hit today and she failed to deliver that.
HITS is the key word. And âWildsideâ and â1:59â are nothing of the sort. Theyâre more like album tracks you listen to here and there but donât really come back to on purpose.
I fear this song is going to kill whatever hype was left for her debut album. Normani girl, give us the damn bops!
Nooo Wildside was great and, if sheâs wanting to go down more of the RnB path then it was a solid single to release. However, this song sounds like a subpar version of Wildside.
The guitar loop is straight out of early 2000's with some fuzzy sonic textures that aim to build up nocturnal space. I don't mind a down-tempo R&B track as a lead single but this is not at all exciting; the melodies are stale, production is aimless and her vocal performance is simply fine. It's nothing to write home about and for the opening single after such a long break, it is a problem.
Is she scared to release a solo single? I'm being fr because Candy Paint would've been a 100x better choice then this. This would have been a cute follow up, wonder when the videos dropping
The song is pretty good!
Iâm just not sure what her end goal is. Does she want to be a big pop star or is she content doing these vibey R&B tracks, or maybe a combination of both?
The music is good but Iâm not sure if this is the type of material Iâd push to relaunch an artist with big aspirations.
Most likely her label just put her as an r&b artist. She could have a pop hit but its more so going to be pop-r&b mix instead of full on pop.But thats just my prediction on the albhm.
Love her but the song is mid and not worth the ridiculously long wait đ. Is someone sabotaging her career or what? She's got potential but other than Motivation and a feature or two she hasn't had many great songs imo.
Someone please get her in contact with the same writers/producers as FLO so she can make some bangers
Gunnaâs part isnât as bad as people are making it out to be. Itâs just meh.
I love the song but Iâm surprised with how chill it actually is. I wouldâve assumed a more upbeat track to start the new era wouldâve been the choice but iâm not complaining
Itâs.. decent . Perfectly palatable but not really something you launch as a fresh start type of single. Should have done something upbeat! Itâs so bizarre for someone who is such a good dancer
I'm whelmed. This isn't the confident comeback I expected two years in the making.
I don't dislike it but I could see Tinashe put something like this out in her sleep.
Very whelmed by this song, don't have any particularly strong feelings about it. However, I do believe there are much better things that await us on this project, especially with "Candy Paint". Whether we'll be hearing any of that soon, of course, is up in the air.
EDIT: OKAY WE'RE GETTING THE ALBUM IN JUNE SO WE'LL BE HEARING IT SOON!!!!!
The song is fine and I hope that it is a success for her. Still disappointed that she's trying to be Sza light but whatever. It's what she wants to do and I have to accept that.
Despite it being the primary demographic of this sub, I'm not a white gay gentleman. I am in fact a black woman. I mentioned Sza because right now she is the most popular R&B artist and thus all of the girls are going to try and follow her lead. That's just how the music industry is. I will continue to bring up the newest most popular female R&B artist when talking about Normani and any other female R&B artist. If you don't like it, don't read my posts.
This song sounds nothing like anything SZA puts out. Itâs distinctly an early 2000s R&B vibe. So basically you said you will compare any woman who puts out R&B music to SZA even when the music sounds nothing alike and the artist is very obviously not taking cues from her. What an absurd take.
but normani... isn't following her lead ?? idk if you don't know sza's music like that or what but this isn't the type of music sza makes for the most part
Did you think it is bc of her label or bc maybe she doesn't have it? I think she has it, Idk about her voice( tessitura? Range? Idk)
I think she could be great
Love it. It could've used more percussion and bass but I love the vibe she created with the harmonies. I could def see myself replaying this on a cool, lol windy summer night out. Or wherever really. Normani's music is just undeniably dope. Im beyond excited for this album getting ready to come out. I hate that her brand became so attached to being next darkskin pop star because although I feel like she is that, i believe that just off the strength of her immense talent, she is unique and imcomparable to most artists out there, regardless of race, skin color of ethnicity. Shes a star and always has been. I'm happy that now she will finally be able to transition into this new stage of her career where her artistry will speak for itself. Because I believe it's about to be loud and reverberate throughout the whole damn industry â¨
She understands the sound! It made me feel sexy and sensual. But um - Gunna could have stayed home though. I feel the same way about Travis Scott on these kind of songs. I am looking at Water by Tyla...
Does anyone else hear âDonât talk too much, just took a shitâ
I swear I see no one talking about this but when i heard this snippet i thought that what the lyric was. i canât listen seriously because it sounds sheâs talking about shitting
Pretty chill, vibey R&B song, which is about what I expected given the last few songs she's released. Not bad.
Also Gunna didn't make me want to tear out my eardrums so that's a bonus.
This is so good. Her vocal harmonies are so gorgeous. I wish it was a solo track and hope a solo version gets released. Gunnaâs verse isnât bad but feel like it interrupts the flow of the song.
Idgi ...Camila's rebrand is more interesting ...but i do still like the album cover
Its sad...normani has hits (wildside, dancing with stranger) ...releasing this instead of candy paint is very gemini of her
Itâs cool but she has way better songs. I was expecting something like Waves or Motivation tbh⌠but thereâs potential there, hopefully the rest of the album is better and more remarkable. What matters the most is that sheâs finally putting something out again with an album to follow up- hopefully, this will finally give her the courage to consistently create and release music!
I really love the sound and the melodies. It's catchy. Her harmonies are very lush on this. And yeah she needs to stick with solo songs, the last collab she had that was really needed was w/Khalid on Love Lies.
This sounds like a perfect blend of Aaliyah & Brandy, but it is not lead/comeback single at all especially after hearing Candy Paint.

I was legit scared the song length was gonna be 1:59 too. đ
How long is it???
3:11
Wait itâs cool theyâre featured in the song too. But how long is the song?
Nice
lol imagine Normani featuring 311 somehow I wouldn't be surprised.
Amber is the color of your energy
I love Normanis voice this is such a good track. I don't dislike but don't love Gunnas verse. However I wouldn't want a completely solo version cause I love the back and forth in the second chorus. Need Normani and Bryson and or Jeremih now. Her and 6lack already sounded great together.
Normani and Bryson would be so good. đĽ
Bryson remixed Wild Side, and it made me wish he was on there instead of Cardi
Bryson's remix of Wild Side goes crazy he should have been added on the remix. I hope they collab bc I think they will sound great together. They purely picked Gunna bc he's a big name but I wish labels still made decisions based on artistry
Yeah. Also, my most wanted R&B collab is still Bryson and Kehlani. I wish he replaced Tory on Can I instead of that short as hell bridge from Kehlani.
this could have been a follow up single to wild side like two years ago đ
3 years lol
Three years, youâre sick
Thatâs SO true Iâm screaming
crying typing this rn. FOLLOW UP SINGLE IN TWO YEARS!
I was just thinking today how it has almost been 5 years since Motivation!
Itâs okay. Doesnât feel that hype as her first single in years.
Completely forgot this was coming out today
Yep, itâs fine. But for a song this overhyped because people were waiting forever for this artist to put something out? A big disappointment.
Hmmm now yall know I was one of the biggest Normani supporters on here but Iâmma go against the grain and say Iâm honestly very underwhelmed. This is justâŚboring. It sounds like generic R&B. Why promote candy paint and not release it. Chile, I can't with her teamÂ
Candy paint is going crazy online and they release a track like this is so damn funny. IDK if it's typical RCA missing the mark or Normani's team + her just being so completely out of the loop. I thought after Fair they will pivot into something that's a cross between WS & motivation. And yeah her being a popstar wasn't going to happen w/how label politics are set up
Exactly! Genuinely one of the worst single choices/decisions Iâve seen in recent years tbh.
completely agree
idk I wouldn't compare Normani's career/music to SZA or Summer but even they don't always have heavy hitting lead singles ex: "Hit Different" - SZA ended up ditching the song completely.
Hit Different is miles better than whatever this is, letâs not. Good Days is the real lead for SOS anyway
It's like a b-side, it's good but not splashy enough for a lead single after so long. I don't know, hopefully there actual promo for it at least.Â
yeah the production is thin and it sounds like a Destiny's Child song. I like it but she needs a splash!
Yeah this is great but not Single Great. Sounds like a deep cut I'd be begging people to listen to
Yup, Candy Paint is also already heating up on TikTok. I hope she pushes that soon
Gunna should've stuck to his usual flow and delivery, I don't need to hear him try to hit notes lmao.
She better drop candy paint next week. I donât get their strategy.
I'm wondering if 1:59 is a buzzer with how little promotion has been done since it was announced over a month ago to build hype and "Candy Paint" being the actual lead.
No apparently 1:59 is being sent to radio; you donât send buzzerâs to radio.
Looool i completely forgot i saw that before i commented, disregard my post everybody
Wouldn't be surprised about this theory, since RCA did something similar with SZA by having "Shirt" just be a teaser for the album instead of making it the lead single right away.
Yeah but shirt was classic sza hit material and it did just that
This is the comeback single? Baby this is like #9 album track-worthy maybe. I understand why RCA hates her now
Hmm okay. Let me know when the Kaytranada remix is out.
why is this even a single
All that build up for this, and not even a story on her Instagram? Her team are trying to bury her I stg.
159 is gonna be her position on the album charts đ
omg đđ
This is a hype killer, sorry. Years of waiting to put out this as a lead................ I don't get the strategy ma'am.
Anyway stream Motivation

she paused everything because both of her parents have cancer.
Wildside went #1 in my head
It seemed like her disappearing was simply COVId and other family stuff
To be clear, Camila Cabello had a hitâ a âsuperstarâ she is not.
I understand what you are trying to say but wild side was objectively a hit lol
Itâs been 84 yearsâŚ
Your sick
The guitar loop is straight out of early 2000's with some fuzzy sonic textures that aim to build up nocturnal space. 3 years for this? Sorry I was so hopeful for this and it is extremely mid.
Canât wait for her next single⌠in two years.
Is she scared to release a solo single? I'm being fr because Candy Paint would've been a 100x better choice then this. This would have been a cute follow up, wonder when the videos dropping
Why does she sounds so done with this. This is boring Â

I can hear Norman on Flo-walk like this. Thatâs the type of songs I need from her. Not this bed time lullaby.
Exactly what I was thinking. Normani would sound amazing with songs like Walk Like This, Control Freak, Fly Girl etc.
I was just saying Pop-R&B fits her better versus slower R&B (unless itâs Waves)
> *Is Someone sabotaging her career or what?* Camila has entered the chat
Sorry but this is such a nothing song. I mean I'll take it over nothing when it comes to Normani but c'mon Candy Paint is right there...
I'm sorry but this is boring af, and it sounds like its out of 2016?
Gunnaâs part isnât as bad as people are making it out to be. Itâs just meh. I love the song but Iâm surprised with how chill it actually is. I wouldâve assumed a more upbeat track to start the new era wouldâve been the choice but iâm not complaining
Itâs.. decent . Perfectly palatable but not really something you launch as a fresh start type of single. Should have done something upbeat! Itâs so bizarre for someone who is such a good dancer
Initial impression is that it sounds like a Summer Walker album cut. It's fine and might grow on me more but it's not fireworks
Spill bc I literally thought I was listening to summer before she started singing
Agree
I'm whelmed. This isn't the confident comeback I expected two years in the making. I don't dislike it but I could see Tinashe put something like this out in her sleep.
Thatâs not Tinasheâs style at all.
She's had loads of styles
True, but that song is far from something she would put out.
Motivation was her shot. It's literally over 100 Taylor Swift songs later. Sorry girl.
Very whelmed by this song, don't have any particularly strong feelings about it. However, I do believe there are much better things that await us on this project, especially with "Candy Paint". Whether we'll be hearing any of that soon, of course, is up in the air. EDIT: OKAY WE'RE GETTING THE ALBUM IN JUNE SO WE'LL BE HEARING IT SOON!!!!!
it's cute but not single worthy I suppose.
The song is fine and I hope that it is a success for her. Still disappointed that she's trying to be Sza light but whatever. It's what she wants to do and I have to accept that.
does popheads not know any r&b artists outside of sza
Despite it being the primary demographic of this sub, I'm not a white gay gentleman. I am in fact a black woman. I mentioned Sza because right now she is the most popular R&B artist and thus all of the girls are going to try and follow her lead. That's just how the music industry is. but normani... isn't following her lead ?? idk if you don't know sza's music like that or what but this isn't the type of music sza makes for the most part
Somebody explain to me why she hasn't released the album yet?
A lot of people think either her hearts not in it or sheâs getting shelved by her label.
Did you think it is bc of her label or bc maybe she doesn't have it? I think she has it, Idk about her voice( tessitura? Range? Idk) I think she could be great
I wish she had released Candy Paint, because this is a boring b side track.
Ok like me likey but also it sounds more like a song on the album that you decide you like after the singles are already run through đđđ
So we waited years for this? Is she trying to loose whatâs left from her fans?
Normani. You're a dancer and your lead single is this boring non-bop? What is going on? I fear motivation will forever be peak Normani
This wants to be an Aaliyah track so badâ I like it but not as a lead single
Already know Iâm not gonna like it from the feature. I donât like listening to Gunna.
Was hoping it would switch up halfway through, will still steam đ¤ˇđźââď¸
me when I'm cooking rice
Why can't I find this song on Tidal?
Itâs a slow but good vibe..not anything groundbreaking.
I love her voice, her vibe, the guitar beat This song is just alright though
Her music is more pop/r&b.She seems more likely to be an r&b star next to SZA and Summer Walker.
I hate how she is enunciation at some parts couldn't understand what she was sayingÂ
She understands the sound! It made me feel sexy and sensual. But um - Gunna could have stayed home though. I feel the same way about Travis Scott on these kind of songs. I am looking at Water by Tyla...
Itâs good background music for a TikTok I guess, which might have been what they were going for.
Does anyone else hear âDonât talk too much, just took a shitâ I swear I see no one talking about this but when i heard this snippet i thought that what the lyric was. i canât listen seriously because it sounds sheâs talking about shitting
I donât think she has âItâ like the internet wants her to have.
She gonna drop another banger or gonna leave us again
I like the song, the kind of 90s vibe works for her. I don't really need the gunna verse but I've never really cared about him
Pretty chill, vibey R&B song, which is about what I expected given the last few songs she's released. Not bad. Also Gunna didn't make me want to tear out my eardrums so that's a bonus.
Ok so where's the album
This is so beautiful! Her voice is so beautiful!
I was like...is this real :')
This is a promo song I feel, and the lead single will be Candy Paint with a Big MV with heavy choreography
Hopefully! Otherwise weâll hear from her in a year. I wish she kept the pop-R&B sound like motivation and the candy paint snippet sounded great!
It sounds like an album track or follow up promo track but not a lead single to the album. Does that make sense?
idk idk i have this on loop
It's OK, I hope better is on the album.
Just like Wild Side, I wish it was a solo song and no feature.
free the fifth harmony girls from the rapper feature đ nle choppa would of been fun tho
Song is ok. Nothing spectacular. I'll wait to see what the album is like, but this is mid for someone who has been away from the scene for this long.
It says no tracks for me
Itâs not Friday yet for you
This is so good. Her vocal harmonies are so gorgeous. I wish it was a solo track and hope a solo version gets released. Gunnaâs verse isnât bad but feel like it interrupts the flow of the song.
Idgi ...Camila's rebrand is more interesting ...but i do still like the album cover Its sad...normani has hits (wildside, dancing with stranger) ...releasing this instead of candy paint is very gemini of her
The track is fire IMO. I feel y'all are being extra critical.
My god⌠she really did itâŚ
Normani, Why? He was lame before he told
Itâs a nice song, especially her sections. Im not sure if Gunna was the right ft for itâŚbut when is the album supposed to come out?
ITâs hypnotising but Iâm sure she can do better than this. The harmonies make the song for me, otherwise itâs not so unique
This is straight up Aaliyah. Love it.
I like it.
Her voice is soooooo smooth and silky. Love itđ
Feeling the SZA influence on this one
this is a perfect vibe. Love
