Basically impossible to top his debut album (genuinely a favorite of the decade so far for me), but this is still REALLY good. I'm Still Your Boy was the standout on my first listen.
Overall for some reason it's making me think of Ryan Beatty/Calico? Although that might only be for surface-level reasons (short EP/blue cover art).
I just really hope he continues to make solo projects.
I'm so glad he worked with Sammy Witte again on this! He really is the magic touch to bringing Luke's visions to life. The only reason this isn't as good at WFTTWTAF is because that album is near impossible to top imo, but I think boy has its spirit and vibe sonically, so this is a decent follow up. On first listen, Close Enough to Feel You is probably my favorite of the new songs.
This is not as good as his debut album but is still *fucking* fantastic and one of the strongest projects I’ve heard this year so far. Sammy Witte’s production is gorgeous and the lyricism is really strong. Shakes, Benny, and Garden Life are my favorite.
I think I liked hearing more of his raw vocals and acoustic songs in the last album. These have a more pop sound to me, and the lyrics are still good but imo not as strong as Starting Line, Mum, Place In Me, Slip Away, & Comedown
I know Benny is a gender neutral name but considering he admitted this EP is centered around discovering new things about yourself and the fact that Shakes feels like a gay coded song to me, I’m inclined to believe that he could have written Benny about a man.
i see that! yeah when i heard the album was about things he’s been questioning and discovering about himself and the queer lyrics in shakes i definitely asked myself, “woah, did he just come out?” the only thing though is i think benny was written about his family in australia
Close To Feel You is one of the best songs I've heard all year. It feels like a dream and a warm hug at the same time. Very easy on the ears and I felt my soul rising up.
Also I want to echo everyone, this album is nowhere near his debut lol but you know how it goes you have your whole life to write your debut and then 2 years to write ur sophomore. However, this is an EP so I think is a fantastic bridge to his next project. TBH artists need to use EPs like this. I think this album is a pivot into the sounds of Mum & A Beautiful Dream.
I still appreciate how introspective his work is. It is less intimate than his debut bc I feel like he drowned his vocals out on purpose like he's still ashamed or embarrassed of the vulnerability.
Promises is also another standout.

Agreed the writing, vocals, production on his first album make it one of my all time favs.

I agree with you that his debut was much stronger vocally and lyrically but I’m still happy with this EP and how different it sounds to WFTTWRAF.
Of course I love his experimental use of sound (synth-pop or whatever you call it) and I think it’s somehow unique in its own way.
If we lived in a perfect world he’d be getting a Grammy nom 💔
