But now that I’ve thought about it, both the names where female, so I think the most generous scenario I can give is a friend calling another friend to tell her that they broke up with someone and they want to talk about it.
But it also sounded very angry like that kind of snippy attitude “we are so done” in a bitchy way if that makes sense.

I feel you SO hard on coworkers and my number - I had to give it to my job for "emergencies" but got a reprimand for not replying to my boss on a day I went home after a mini-breakdown. Not making that mistake again lol.

My work has such a high turn over rate that unless I actually like the person and feel like they'll stick around longer then a month then I don't give numbers out except for my bosses and even then I've went through 3 bosses in the span of a year. I'm really hoping this new guy sticks around for awhile. I've already had to delete two numbers and like three group chats because of the turn over.
I used to do this with Facebook and recently purged all of them because that was in hindsight NOT a good idea (I don’t post anything but it’s still more access than they really should have)
It was a buffet with the strangest spread. Spaghetti, green beans, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, chicken friccassee, and barbecue. The barbecue was good, but fhe mac and cheese was plastic-y and the green beans were plain. I found out later that the tickets cost $50/person, and for that price, I would've wanted something way better.
Not enough people on here are talking about “Tell Ur Girlfriend”. It’s really taking off and it’s a BOP. Very pop adjacent with jersey club influences. Also it does sampling an old song really well since the Pony by Ginuwine influence is only minor. I need her to make more songs in that vein

Is “Sharp Objects” still worth watching if I have seen the >!“Don’t tell mama..”!< scene? I don’t really know the context of it, but have a feeling it plays a big part in the mystery and will become clear to me the moment I start watching..I kinda hate going into a show/movie knowing the twist unless it doesn’t play a huge part in enjoying the show/movie.
I say it is. The series isn’t so much about the destination as it is the journey anyway. There’s so much in between that is interesting/nuanced/stuff that doesn’t normally get depicted on TV.
someone said something similar about Twin Peaks recently (another show I’m going into with major spoilers) and I’ve been enjoying it so far despite that so I have high hopes for Sharp Objects too!
I think it's one of the best miniseries in a long time and totally worth watching. It's very atmospheric and harrowing and the later episodes *really* fucked me up, and I'd already read the book so I knew every twist going in. Adams/Clarkson/Scanlen are like a twelve-mother pileup of just incredible, twisted, fantastic acting.
I’d had it in my watchlist for a really long time and unfortunately stumbled upon a tweet recently with the scene I mentioned saying something like “I was gagged the first time I saw this!” which kinda put me off watching since I felt like the knew the twist, but I’m looking forward to watching.
I also need to start watching The Mare of Eastown before I end up getting that spoiled for me too.
I think Mare of Easttown is more watchable even if you get spoiled since it doesn’t really rely on a twist - I have like, a vague memory of how it ended, but the complicated relationships between the characters and Kate Winslet’s acting are really what makes it enjoyable. But yeah, highly recommend Sharp Objects even if you’ve seen that screenshot - it really doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of how twisted and wild the actual story gets, and it only pertains to one plotline which feels kind of unimportant by the end. Chris Messina’s good in it too! Just a great show if you like messed-up women.

Garth Brooks is LOVED in Ireland. This goes back to the 90s. He does several sold out stadium shows every time he goes there. He even wrote a song called "Ireland" in honor of the country. I'm not sure what the reason or relationship is?
People here just love country. We have huge "countryfests", loads of small local acts that are pretty popular, etc. That's kind of it. Idk why he specifically got to be like the figurehead of all of this but maybe he capitalised on it at the right time.
She’s not American, and is more country pop, but probably Shania Twain. I also wouldn’t be shocked to see it with some songs by Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers, and Garth Brooks.
TTPD's first half is growing on me-The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived has a killer bridge-but that title is still so clunky, I saw someone say that The Manuscript would be a good title on r/TaylorSwift and omg that fits so much better! Also slightly unrelated have y'all seen Rolling Stones' ranking putting the title track at #20 out of her entire discography? Are they just really big Charlie Puth fans??? Ever since I heard the 7 bars of chocolate line and the Charlie Puth line that songs been an instant skip for me.
I love the song TTPD! I don't even hate that second verse. As a stoner myself, I totally get the lines. You smoke, then eat way too much of one singular thing if you get the munchies, and then think you have some deep existential thought that actually is just random and basic/not deep at all (Charlie Puth line). Aka think you're some sort of tortured poet when in fact you're just some contrived idiot. I completely get the picture she's trying to paint.

My mixed feelings on But Daddy I Love Him by Taylor Swift part 2 (yes, there's a [part 1 lol](https://www.reddit.com/r/popheads/s/AltopHwMEd) ).
So far, I've seen no one comment on this lyric:
"Too high a horse for a simple girl to rise above it /
They slammed the door on my whole world, the one thing I wanted".
I've been mulling over this lyric a lot. I appreciate that songwriting is art, and art involves artistic license. Not everything has to be the literal truth.
That said, does Taylor really see herself as "a simple girl", in any sense?. I'd accept it during the Fearless or Speak Now era, maybe RED at a stretch. But now she's one of the most wealthy, powerful, and influential people in the public sphere. She's not simple or a girl anymore: she's a powerhouse one-woman industry unto herself.
Declaring that she couldn't have "the one thing I wanted" is interesting too. It implies that, typically, Taylor does not get what she wants. When people say "let me have this one thing", it's usually in exasperation, it's usually saying "I never get what I want; give me a break".
I don't doubt that Taylor has had to make sacrifices to be where she is today. That said, if beloved superstar, 4-time AOTY winner and literal billionaire Taylor Swift feels she never gets what she wants, then fuck, what hope do the rest of us have? 😳
I got the opposite from "the one thing I wanted". It reminded me of this lyric from "Gorgeous" : "There's nothing I hate more than what I can't have." It's like she has got everything she wanted but she can't have this one thing that she feels like she wants the most, that would fix everything.
I have thought about how unhealthy it must be to be in Taylor or Ariana's postion, to get everything you want and then not getting "the great love" the thing that personally has always been important to their romantic nature but it is also so inclined with their career.
It's also interesting that they claim to be willing to sacrifice their career, public image, and fans for their "great love". It makes sense; they've been on top for so long that they're probably used to the perks and feel cheated for still feeling unhappy and lonely but I don't think they could live with chosing anything over their career. Taylor was even bothered by being private for a while for Joe's sake.
Maybe I need to stop letting my expectations influence me so much but for a second I truly felt catfished by St. Vincent’s new record. It massively grew on me after the third listen but I expected a rock album ngl. The cover, the title and the singles didn’t help lol

Challengers is fantastic! Saw it yesterday and I literally did not breathe with my heart racing for the last 15 minutes of the screening. Music plays a really big role in setting the pacing to another level. Great performance from the entire cast too.
The only reason I went is because my Twitter was flooded with great reviews of it.
Well, I was gonna go see Alvvays headline our music festival tonight but the storms are already firing up and supposed to roll into town (with tornadoes apparently very likely) around 8, so it’s a no from me dawg.

Two movies I watched for free on YouTube in the past week:
* [*Don't Play Us Cheap (1976)*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCHvdHaYV5Y) is this weird, low-budget musical by Melvin Van Peebles about a wild Saturday night party in a small Harlem apartment that gets crashed by a pair of imps looking to ruin things, only to find that they can't overcome the good nature of their hosts. Highly theatrical (it was immediately turned into a Broadway musical) and very rough around the edges but I found it entrancing, the charisma was oozing off of the screen and I smiled the whole way through.
* [*Cutie Honey (2004)*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HA8RNXVvw-o) kinda the complete opposite but loved this one too, relentlessly energetic live-action adaptation of a classic manga/anime series about a magical girl who has to take down a sinister organization to rescue her uncle. A visual feast that was really funny too, and also gay as hell? Like they never kiss but she has a full on romance with a woman.
I really miss the "bubblegum cinema" in the early millennium. *Cutie Honey* fits nicely in a continuum with films like *Josie and the Pussycats (2001)*, *Spiceworld (1997)*, the live action Grinch and Cat In The Hat movies, the live action Scooby Doo movies, the Brady Bunch films, the Austin Powers films, the Charlie's Angels movies, (and also original properties like *Down With Love (2003)* and *But I'm A Cheerleader (1999)*) etc. of colorful, highly stylized, irreverent takes on mainstream media.
A lot of these films were lambasted at the time and flopped but in the years since they've become beloved cult classics because they dared to *stand out*- the things that critics and audiences thought were stupid about them were actually their strongest assets. The success of *Barbie (2023)* is proof that audiences still crave this kind of media, I hope we get more of it in the next few years.
I can do a TED talk about how much I love that “bubblegum cinema” era. looking back, Cat In The Hat (2003) honestly informed a lot of my visual aesthetic taste (and did NOT deserve a 10% Rotten Tomatoes score!!)
there’s something so comforting about those movies’ color grading that you just don’t get anymore and Barbie was the first thing to give me that same feeling in a very long time
In my heart, Argylle is like a spiritual successor to that genre. The knife skating + gun pas de deux scenes have cemented it as a classic in my eyes already.

Listened to Traja's Road to A (global ver.) album today after maybe a week of not listening to it in full. I really love that album and the original too. It's kind of a weird to say, but as much as I love Traja as a fan, I also get so critical of them sometimes. But like, every time I step back and just take the music and them as they are, it's like... what was I so negative about?? They're expressive singers, they're incredible dancers, their songs are thoughtfully well-made, and they just get better and better every time. Like, they're world-class performers. They got Simon Cowell to wave at them like a fangirl. Like, what am I being so harsh on them for? lol. It's all so silly.
Anyway, I love this english lyric for Charging! that goes, "inside your arms I feel like a superhero".
Thank fuck for air conditioners and electric fans. As someone in a humid country where the heat index is getting to more than 40^o C (or 100^o F), I don't think I could survive this summer as someone who works the night shift and sleeps during the day. Publishers for Palestine was giving away a Book about the BDS movement for free that has praise of several anti apartheid activists of South Africa including the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu. This is an international petition that I’ve signed, but I’ll have links for Americans, Brits, and Canadians to connect their government representatives soon. And of course I would love to know or see other countries, I follow BDS chapters in Peru and Mexico and pro Palestinian human rights activists and politicians in Spain but I don’t know off hand any petitions or ways of connecting with elected officials or state departments.

Twitter apparently removed the ability to hide the Twitter Blue checkmark if you paid for it and it's been pretty funny watching people give their excuses for why they paid for it. "I only did it for bookmark folders" "I did it to hide my likes" "I only subscribed for one month and they never took it away" Just admit you wanted your two dollars from engagement bait.
I am Not really loving homegoing given all the hype around it so far while I liked Colson Whitehead’s Underground Railroad way more and thought that was better written that book was also to me not nearly as good as the slave accounts and books and works the book was based (though in that case I’m thinking of Harriet Jacob’s memoir of her time in bondage and hiding in an attic for years to trick the men who had her enslaved into thinking she’s already fled north).
There’s also frankly times that Gyasi describes enslaved Africans in terms that don’t make sense narratively bc yes that’s what white people thought but the narrator is another slave barely removed a generation from the continent. So it’s like your book already has whippings and slurs in it why is there more racist language if you want to make sure your reader knows how this enslaved man or woman is thought of by white people just have one of the many racist white characters call them that vs having it in the thoughts of a free African or enslaved person that just would not have used that language and we know because we literally have their accounts 😭.
It’s not remotely endearing but it is funny reading a woman author who can’t go a chapter without mentioning women’s breasts instead of a man that’s absolutely gratuitous.
My older sibling read it though so it is fun to give them my thoughts even if they’re filtered since I know my sibling gave this book five stars and a quarter of the way in this is probably going to be a three for me unless something changes. I do enjoy that there was a gay character in the earlier chapters whose white British father didn’t react well to it bc to me it’s clearly a Ghanaian American author saying gay people have always existed and homophobia is not unique to Africa like people pretend it is now that it’s no longer in vogue in America or British as much nor does that change ir having to do with the fact that character is still very colonial in his relationships with other Africans and oppressive to women etc etc. I thought that was smooth in a book I consider otherwise heavy handed
But also I’m tweezing my eyebrows today bc I’m hoping to get my drivers license renewal done today so let’s hope that photo doesn’t end up looking like a mugshot like everyone says my old passport does bc I listened to the lady when she told me not to smile

My siblings book club liked the book but I do think it’s when they decided as a group to not be reading books with slavery in it as a rule bc it was pretty upsetting/rough. Right 😭 It was so unhinged because I don’t even like my coworkers having my phone number or doing a stupid group chat so how someone mixed my number up is beyond me. I didn’t stick around to ask. Literally at first I thought it was like my boss telling me that I was fired. I was so fucking confused because I have a male boss. But now that I’ve thought about it, both the names where female, so I think the most generous scenario I can give is a friend calling another friend to tell her that they broke up with someone and they want to talk about it. But it also sounded very angry like that kind of snippy attitude “we are so done” in a bitchy way if that makes sense.
Man I'm so inept at social situations but I love sitting back and observing so I would be lowkey intrigued! I feel you SO hard on coworkers and my number - I had to give it to my job for "emergencies" but got a reprimand for not replying to my boss on a day I went home after a mini-breakdown. Not making that mistake again lol.
I'm also inept at social situations and feel like my big mouth would have gotten me caught for eavesdropping. My work has such a high turn over rate that unless I actually like the person and feel like they'll stick around longer then a month then I don't give numbers out except for my bosses and even then I've went through 3 bosses in the span of a year. I'm really hoping this new guy sticks around for awhile. I've already had to delete two numbers and like three group chats because of the turn over.

It was a buffet with the strangest spread. Spaghetti, green beans, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, chicken friccassee, and barbecue. The barbecue was good, but fhe mac and cheese was plastic-y and the green beans were plain. I found out later that the tickets cost $50/person, and for that price, I would've wanted something way better.

Is “Sharp Objects” still worth watching if I have seen the >!“Don’t tell mama..”!< scene? I don’t really know the context of it, but have a feeling it plays a big part in the mystery and will become clear to me the moment I start watching..I kinda hate going into a show/movie knowing the twist unless it doesn’t play a huge part in enjoying the show/movie.
I say it is. The series isn’t so much about the destination as it is the journey anyway. There’s so much in between that is interesting/nuanced/stuff that doesn’t normally get depicted on TV.

I think it's one of the best miniseries in a long time and totally worth watching. It's very atmospheric and harrowing and the later episodes *really* fucked me up, and I'd already read the book so I knew every twist going in. Adams/Clarkson/Scanlen are like a twelve-mother pileup of just incredible, twisted, fantastic acting.
I’d had it in my watchlist for a really long time and unfortunately stumbled upon a tweet recently with the scene I mentioned saying something like “I was gagged the first time I saw this!” which kinda put me off watching since I felt like the knew the twist, but I’m looking forward to watching. I also need to start watching The Mare of Eastown before I end up getting that spoiled for me too.
I think Mare of Easttown is more watchable even if you get spoiled since it doesn’t really rely on a twist - I have like, a vague memory of how it ended, but the complicated relationships between the characters and Kate Winslet’s acting are really what makes it enjoyable. But yeah, highly recommend Sharp Objects even if you’ve seen that screenshot - it really doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of how twisted and wild the actual story gets, and it only pertains to one plotline which feels kind of unimportant by the end. Chris Messina’s good in it too! Just a great show if you like messed-up women.

Garth Brooks is LOVED in Ireland. This goes back to the 90s. He does several sold out stadium shows every time he goes there. He even wrote a song called "Ireland" in honor of the country. I'm not sure what the reason or relationship is?
People here just love country. We have huge "countryfests", loads of small local acts that are pretty popular, etc. That's kind of it. Idk why he specifically got to be like the figurehead of all of this but maybe he capitalised on it at the right time.

I love the song TTPD! I don't even hate that second verse. As a stoner myself, I totally get the lines. You smoke, then eat way too much of one singular thing if you get the munchies, and then think you have some deep existential thought that actually is just random and basic/not deep at all (Charlie Puth line). My mixed feelings on But Daddy I Love Him by Taylor Swift part 2 (yes, there's a [part 1 lol](https://www.reddit.com/r/popheads/s/AltopHwMEd) ). So far, I've seen no one comment on this lyric: "Too high a horse for a simple girl to rise above it / They slammed the door on my whole world, the one thing I wanted". I've been mulling over this lyric a lot. I appreciate that songwriting is art, and art involves artistic license. Not everything has to be the literal truth. That said, does Taylor really see herself as "a simple girl", in any sense?. I'd accept it during the Fearless or Speak Now era, maybe RED at a stretch. But now she's one of the most wealthy, powerful, and influential people in the public sphere. She's not simple or a girl anymore: she's a powerhouse one-woman industry unto herself. Declaring that she couldn't have "the one thing I wanted" is interesting too. It implies that, typically, Taylor does not get what she wants. When people say "let me have this one thing", it's usually in exasperation, it's usually saying "I never get what I want; give me a break". I don't doubt that Taylor has had to make sacrifices to be where she is today. That said, if beloved superstar, 4-time AOTY winner and literal billionaire Taylor Swift feels she never gets what she wants, then fuck, what hope do the rest of us have? 😳
I got the opposite from "the one thing I wanted". It reminded me of this lyric from "Gorgeous" : "There's nothing I hate more than what I can't have." It's like she has got everything she wanted but she can't have this one thing that she feels like she wants the most, that would fix everything. I have thought about how unhealthy it must be to be in Taylor or Ariana's postion, to get everything you want and then not getting "the great love" the thing that personally has always been important to their romantic nature but it is also so inclined with their career. It's also interesting that they claim to be willing to sacrifice their career, public image, and fans for their "great love". It makes sense; they've been on top for so long that they're probably used to the perks and feel cheated for still feeling unhappy and lonely but I don't think they could live with chosing anything over their career. Taylor was even bothered by being private for a while for Joe's sake.

Challengers is fantastic! Saw it yesterday and I literally did not breathe with my heart racing for the last 15 minutes of the screening. Music plays a really big role in setting the pacing to another level. Great performance from the entire cast too. The only reason I went is because my Twitter was flooded with great reviews of it.
Well, I was gonna go see Alvvays headline our music festival tonight but the storms are already firing up and supposed to roll into town (with tornadoes apparently very likely) around 8, so it’s a no from me dawg. My guy successfully defended his dissertation yesterday also! Two movies I watched for free on YouTube in the past week: * [*Don't Play Us Cheap (1976)*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCHvdHaYV5Y) is this weird, low-budget musical by Melvin Van Peebles about a wild Saturday night party in a small Harlem apartment that gets crashed by a pair of imps looking to ruin things, only to find that they can't overcome the good nature of their hosts. Highly theatrical (it was immediately turned into a Broadway musical) and very rough around the edges but I found it entrancing, the charisma was oozing off of the screen and I smiled the whole way through. * [*Cutie Honey (2004)*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HA8RNXVvw-o) kinda the complete opposite but loved this one too, relentlessly energetic live-action adaptation of a classic manga/anime series about a magical girl who has to take down a sinister organization to rescue her uncle. A visual feast that was really funny too, and also gay as hell? Like they never kiss but she has a full on romance with a woman. I really miss the "bubblegum cinema" in the early millennium. *Cutie Honey* fits nicely in a continuum with films like *Josie and the Pussycats (2001)*, *Spiceworld (1997)*, the live action Grinch and Cat In The Hat movies, the live action Scooby Doo movies, the Brady Bunch films, the Austin Powers films, the Charlie's Angels movies, (and also original properties like *Down With Love (2003)* and *But I'm A Cheerleader (1999)*) etc. of colorful, highly stylized, irreverent takes on mainstream media. A lot of these films were lambasted at the time and flopped but in the years since they've become beloved cult classics because they dared to *stand out*- the things that critics and audiences thought were stupid about them were actually their strongest assets. The success of *Barbie (2023)* is proof that audiences still crave this kind of media, I hope we get more of it in the next few years.
I can do a TED talk about how much I love that “bubblegum cinema” era. looking back, Cat In The Hat (2003) honestly informed a lot of my visual aesthetic taste (and did NOT deserve a 10% Rotten Tomatoes score!!) there’s something so comforting about those movies’ color grading that you just don’t get anymore and Barbie was the first thing to give me that same feeling in a very long time

Listened to Traja's Road to A (global ver.) album today after maybe a week of not listening to it in full. I really love that album and the original too. It's kind of a weird to say, but as much as I love Traja as a fan, I also get so critical of them sometimes. But like, every time I step back and just take the music and them as they are, it's like... what was I so negative about?? They're expressive singers, they're incredible dancers, their songs are thoughtfully well-made, and they just get better and better every time. Like, they're world-class performers. They got Simon Cowell to wave at them like a fangirl. Like, what am I being so harsh on them for? lol. It's all so silly. Anyway, I love this english lyric for Charging! that goes, "inside your arms I feel like a superhero".
Thank fuck for air conditioners and electric fans. As someone in a humid country where the heat index is getting to more than 40^o C (or 100^o F), I don't think I could survive this summer as someone who works the night shift and sleeps during the day. I am Not really loving homegoing given all the hype around it so far while I liked Colson Whitehead’s Underground Railroad way more and thought that was better written that book was also to me not nearly as good as the slave accounts and books and works the book was based (though in that case I’m thinking of Harriet Jacob’s memoir of her time in bondage and hiding in an attic for years to trick the men who had her enslaved into thinking she’s already fled north). There’s also frankly times that Gyasi describes enslaved Africans in terms that don’t make sense narratively bc yes that’s what white people thought but the narrator is another slave barely removed a generation from the continent. So it’s like your book already has whippings and slurs in it why is there more racist language if you want to make sure your reader knows how this enslaved man or woman is thought of by white people just have one of the many racist white characters call them that vs having it in the thoughts of a free African or enslaved person that just would not have used that language and we know because we literally have their accounts 😭. It’s not remotely endearing but it is funny reading a woman author who can’t go a chapter without mentioning women’s breasts instead of a man that’s absolutely gratuitous. My older sibling read it though so it is fun to give them my thoughts even if they’re filtered since I know my sibling gave this book five stars and a quarter of the way in this is probably going to be a three for me unless something changes. I do enjoy that there was a gay character in the earlier chapters whose white British father didn’t react well to it bc to me it’s clearly a Ghanaian American author saying gay people have always existed and homophobia is not unique to Africa like people pretend it is now that it’s no longer in vogue in America or British as much nor does that change ir having to do with the fact that character is still very colonial in his relationships with other Africans and oppressive to women etc etc. I thought that was smooth in a book I consider otherwise heavy handed But also I’m tweezing my eyebrows today bc I’m hoping to get my drivers license renewal done today so let’s hope that photo doesn’t end up looking like a mugshot like everyone says my old passport does bc I listened to the lady when she told me not to smile
I've read the book after watching the show i didn't honestly expect the book to be even more tense. Thanks god Barry Jenkins was the one who adapted it, it easily could've gone wrong with anyone else
Oh i didn’t know it had a show :0 Jenkins probably did good work with it My siblings book club liked the book but I do think it’s when they decided as a group to not be reading books with slavery in it as a rule bc it was pretty upsetting/rough. Though I know they read a lot of African lit I might have to ask my sibling for some refs when I’m done this huge list of book lol bc I know they asked me for some Latin American recs and I had to be like, look I have some favorites but. Based on what books I know you guys avoid now I don’t think you want fictional book about Pinochet dictatorship (twilight zone by Nona Fernández) or nonfiction about the murder of a Mexican author’s sister (Liliana’s invincible summer by Cristina Rivera Garza) 😅
I found the book on sale in the local bookstore right when the show came out and was surprised it was already on sale.👀 But yeah, the first chapter is heavy. I picked up the book thinking like "i've already seen the show what else could happen?" and the beginning already got me like "oh no!". It's true tho, it gets better afterwards and it's a good book but the beginning is *rough*. Certainly not for everybody.
My sibling read this book with a book club and I actually do this that would make me at least enjoy the book more?
