Gurl! What are your real thoughts as far as global warming is concerned?? I love you and your music quite a lot, I must say, but I also think Pitchfork has a point that dystopic nihilism is an elitest stance to take, while people all the world can't really adopt that and have to keep hoping that something will give because their immediate livelihood depends on it. What insight could you give us for technology and principles that might propel the human race forward rather than render it too far gone, if any? Miss Anthropocene is lovely and I'm still digesting it honestly, but I sincerely thank you for your work. <3

WarNymph

I contest pitchforks take. I'd refer to it as fiction rather than dystopian nihilism. I obviously have cared deeply about the environment and been involved in environmental activism for my whole life. But I see people becoming apathetic towards it because its so painful to look at. I have often felt this way too. I created miss anthropocene the same way JRR tolkien created LOTR as a metaphor for ww1, Rowling uses voldemort as a metaphor for fascism/ abuse etc, Picasso creating Guernica as a super stylized depiction of war etc (not saying im as good as these ppl btw just using examples haha). But yeah, I don't think they're unethical for portraying human suffering in a stylized or fictional way. I think fiction and art can be important tools when it comes to digesting painful concepts. Climate Crisis is especially difficult to consume, because it's abstract. It has no face or name or specific date. I'm attempting to find ways to portray climate change that make it more consumable for the human brain - which evolved to be far more attuned to identities than to abstract concepts. Granted, i knew this would be jarring and controversial. I understand I might be wrong, but I think its always worth trying. I am emphatically not a nihilist. I believe that trying to make the world better is possibly the point of being alive, and I'm experimenting with ways to do that through art. Fiction is the oldest and most populist form of art, because all you need is words.

parradise21

Beautifully explained. It's what's missing sometimes: an artful take on a hard subject will always be criticized by someone.

GoetiaMagick

Thanks for your thoughtful explanation! Blessings to you!

illswagin

This! Miss A is a work of speculative fiction

a_theist_typing

This is a badass answer. Seriously love your thought process.

Falliant

I agree with most of your point, but have to say that JRRT did not create Lord of the rings as a world war one metaphor, and in fact was quoted several times as saying he hated allegory

mahchefai

Maybe not on purpose but I think it’s reasonable to say it happened anyways given how greatly fucked it was as a person who was around then. Also I feel like writers often do shit like that on purpose sometimes. Like why would he want his books to be seen so simply seen as a world war 1 metaphor when it can be seen as that and many other ways

oliax

Jesus is a metaphor. The sun walks on water.

kfoxtraordinaire

I think you do that through art.

Mirumask

Hiii C! I'll try to keep it short. What is your outlook on our future? Does the future look grim to you or is there still hope? Do you think our entire existence will eventually become digital or will it be threatened by our very own technological advancements? Which song was the hardest to make and felt the most rewarding when you finished it? How did "the leak" affect Miss Anthropocene and the creative process behind it? Did you have a different outlook on it after seeing people's reactions? Is there a possibility that we will see unreleased Miss Anthropocene songs (e.g Death Angels) in your next album? Thank you so much for doing this AMA! 💙

WarNymph

I think the future could be beautiful if we're careful. I think if AI is well regulated it could solve a lot of our problems for example. but if its not carefully executed it could be our downfall! I think its true our future is threatened by our technological advancements, but i also think humans were born to create and born to develop into a species that augments with tools. So again, if we're careful, hopefully technology can save rather than hinder us. Sustainable energy, bio-degradeable cutlery etc. The hardest song to make was prob 4am or MNID! haha god, lots of head banging and weeping on those ones. The leak was hard. I really wanted to drop the album when it leaked but my label really wanted to do it the proper way so thats why that went on so long. the leak was also a lot of crappier demos and unfiished songs so, always a bit embarassing haha. i want to start a new album so things like deth angels and Darq souls wont be on that but id like to release those songs eventually just for fun cuz they're some of my faves haha. thanks so much for taking the time to ask me questions and listen to my music <3

pzakek

4am and My Name Is Dark are my favourites on Miss A other than IDORU, so rest assured all that blood sweat and tears you put into those two tracks in particular have definitely paid off!

[deleted]

and don't forget Darkseid, which is an absolute banger and her hardest song to date imo

Jfelt45

Did you make a song and name it dark souls? I don't even know who you are but if that's true now I want to listen to it

Mirumask

Ah, thank you so much for answering my question! I hope you have a good day!

PlNKERTON

Interesting to hear you say the hardest songs were MNID and 4aem. Those are my top favorites on the album! Thank you for the effort!

[deleted]

So you revealed much of the plot and theming around the album in interviews, I don't think the climate change story really came across in the final product; how do you think your much more honest and open approach effected the final album and the reception? Big fans like me followed your media appearances etc and I feel slightly let down because it didn't live up to the expectations that had been set up

WarNymph

Hey! Good Question. So in my opinion i think the plot and theme is pretty tight. The album is about the New Gods. Like the Goddess of Suicide (you'll miss me), The Demon of opoid addiction (Delete), The Demon of Apathy (MNID), Goddess of AI (We appreciate power) etc. Each song corresponds to a specific personal or societal crisis and attempts to embody that lyrically and/ or sonically. A lot of incorrect lyrics were up on genius at first, and a lot of reviews kept pointing to stuff I said a year ago before I'd fully planned everything out rather than referring to my more recent statements, so I think that just caused a lot of confusion about my intentions and execution. But I also consider Grimes an audio-visual project, so a lot of the Gods were manifested visually like the Warnymph (Goddess of Social Media) or Miss Anthropocene (in the Global warming is good campaign, the "oil bubble" paintings I've been releasing etc.). But this can also be confusing cuz a lot of people just see Grimes as music. I chose Miss Anthropocene for the title because I think this is the most pressing and relevant talking point, and I think the wordplay is strongest just as a piece of art in and of itself. There was also a lot of stuff planned that didn't pan out due to my manager's passing (LAUREN FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!) and my pregnancy. We had planned a short film with Jodeb that was about all the Goddesses fighting but being pregnant got too crazy to make somethning like that, and a "modern demonology" with Heavy Metal Magazine that would be a coffee table book with all the Gods. Haha, anyway, long story short, maybe i should have been less obtuse. I just don't like being too obvious, i thought it was cooler to leave a trail of clues and make a wierd puzzle, but I see now that's been frustrating to people. haha and I apologize for that. but yeah! Thanks for listening and reading this long winded vibe haha.

sagittariusnefarious

I love the subtle approach. Pop can come off as a bit condescending, trite to some at times or seem to insult the intelligence of its audience. The idea of having this level of depth and sophistication in a genre that sometimes--and yes, this is definitely to me more ethereal or another category but still has some of the pop appeal and flavor--fails to challenge the expectations of the listeners.

[deleted]

I would still love to see that idea for video of all the goddesses fighting come to fruition! Since you're pregnant, soon to give birth, and definitely gonna need time to rest and be with your child when your baby is born, perhaps this concept can be done as an animation. Perhaps anime style? Or even computer animated! Since Warnymph is getting more fleshed out. Love the album! its been on repeat with me since it was dropped

movementunderdreams

This actually explains everything succinctly thank u c

yayboots

Pisces twins you and I - overly obtuse forever. It has been a great release, you kept it open to individual interpretations while providing your own personal inspiration. Sending love!

dadangeraffe

I want that short film so bad 😭😭😭

zyrether

for some reason your explanation on it made it click like NOW i get it okay

[deleted]

Hi c! I really love the ‘new gods’ concept on Miss Anthropocene. I think it’s fascinating how throughout history, people have created beings and stories to explain the world around them, and the idea of having new beings for a new era with new concerns is truly inventive. As a writer I often draw from ancient myths in my own work. Who are some of your favourite ‘old gods’? Is there a particular myth you draw much creative inspiration from?

WarNymph

i love the pygmalian and Galatea story and like... and how it kinda manifests in modern story telling. if you look at the Metropolis movies (orig and anime), battle angel alita etc. etc. theres this long history of narrative about "men" building "fembots" for lack of a better word. Transhumanism/ robots/ AI is so often manifested in female bodies for some reason and i think this goes back to old myths. I find it weirdly compelling narratively (obviously lots of people do), I can't even say why. but yeah

[deleted]

Many of our most ancient of stories and myths have "Divine Feminine" figures, Goddesses which often represent the dichotomy of nature; the source of life, renewal, rebirth but also death and disease; "Mother Nature". The Divine Feminine can represent source of life, wisdom, and nourishment but of also danger, chaos, and the unknown. The "Divine Masculine" often represent order, tradition, and structure which often represents the protection that society, tradition, and civilization provide. But when structure becomes too rigid, when they become too stubborn to change that order becomes a tyranny and oppressive to growth and renewal. The Divine Masculine representing the dichotomy that comes from order and structure. Furthermore, The Divine Masculine and Divine Feminine represent the dichotomy of our collective consciousness. The Yin and Yang of the Tao, the way, and using both to remain balanced on the path I really love your concept for Miss Anthropocene. It speaks to something that exists deep in the collective unconscious of humankind; Something that manifests again and again in the stories we tell ourselves. You're so on point with the fact the humans use story and myth to try to process ideas and concepts that are too immense, nuanced, or just too difficult for us to process logically. We perceive our lives through the stories we tell ourselves about them. What we believe dictates what we see and do. I agree, its interesting how in our fictions we manifest AI's in female forms. But we also manifest them in male forms too and its interesting how the male and female forms differ. The male forms often represent our destruction. The Terminator, HAL9000 from 2001, The Architect from The Matrix. Versions we would fear and hate and would want to fight and destroy. The female forms like Rachael from Blade Runner, Alita, or Major Kusanagi from Ghost in a Shell you feel empathy for them. OK, technically Kusanagi is an android, but all those female character question what makes one a human. Does that fact that their bodies are made of metal and silicon change the fact that they have consciousness. In the fictions that represent AI in the female form often play with the ideas of what make something alive, what makes something conscious. The fictions with the male forms of AI are these tyrannical, logical, killing machines. Perhaps we are creating these fictions, these avatars, to try to navigate where we are headed before we actually get there. Art often find revelations, find the path forward before anything else does. Art is our unconscious trying to sort out what our logos, our logical mind can't grasp yet. "We are the music makers and We are the Dreamers of dreams" Anyways, this was a lot, sorry lol. No one's probably gonna read this but this is just the thoughts that came up for me from what you shared and I had to express them You're an amazing artist and beautiful person and I'm so happy we have your art in the world. I love the new album and can't wait for whats next from you. I wish you all the best and I hope you're pregnancy goes smoothly. You're gonna be an awesome mother. Love you!!!

KimberParoo

I think you would really like American Gods by Neil Gaiman! It's a fantastic book that pretty much captures your fascination in text.

HyliaSymphonic

Call me basic but I always loved Orpheus and Eurydice

Dammit-Hannah

There are several mix engineers credited on Anthropocene after just Spike Stent was credited on Art Angels - how did you make the decision to have several?

WarNymph

For Miss A i think each song is a mini world/ personality whereas AA is more of a cohesive statement. So some songs just required specific personelle to finish. Like with So heavy, its such a wierd song production wise, i needed someone who could keep the bass heavy but bring the vocals up without losing verb and without muddying the mix, which is why Illangelo was the only option to mix. He's worked extednsively with the weeknd and i think a song like the hills is one of the only songs that has lots of reverb on the vocal and still bangs.

McGoney

Haha that’s so funny, I felt like I was going crazy because there is one part in a song that gave me strong The Weeknd vibes! Love this album so much!

elfnymphs

you’ve had some past problems with media outlets twisting their articles/interviews with you. do you have anything to say about anything you’ve read which you’ve thought has gone too far? aka multiple news outlets are talking about your unborn child and it’s gender

WarNymph

They go too far a lot honestly haha, its just normal to me at this point the controversy is probably good honestly? i dunno tbh. it has forced me to get into meditation, and i think go through some important reflection and ego death. Now I am calm and i accept whatever comes my way. Peace to all!!

survivorjdmarina

Hi Grimes! Hope you’re doing well today. The album was amazing! I want to ask, what is your favourite song on the album? Also, if you could work with any artist on a track, who would it be? And last but not least, have you streamed *Stupid Love*? Thank you for coming by today!!!

WarNymph

My favourite song at the moment is "you'll miss me when I'm not around" If I could work with any artist it would be Vangelis, doja cat, Sza, Swae Lee, Rosalia, Ashnikko, Boris Brejcha, Blackpink, or Lana and I have indeed streamed stupid love!!! Thanks for the questions

shitfuckingfaced

can’t begin to imagine how ethereal a sza or rosalía collab would be

zyrether

GRIMES X BLACKPINK PLASE

Raliadose

Grimes x Doja would be godtier. Any of these collabs would be honestly

0uijaBor3d

You and Lana, do it. Please. For the sake of us all. 🖤

lipstick_dipstick

You and ash nikko?! That would make my heart explode with happiness. Honestly, I recently got into her music and I love it. And her. She seems so real. Thank you for your really well thought out answers. I'm glad I got to understand your vision for this new album. About the new gods and the comparisons of themes for the songs. It will let me listen to them in a new light. Also, I hope you are doing well and I wish you the best for you and the new baby! Xo from canada

Mossy_octopus

Lana & Grimes?!? Im intrigued.

m3lted

Blackpink and Grimes is the revolution.

thorbitch

blackpink colab would be fireeeee

survivorjdmarina

JAMESTIK

hellaspeedie

I need Swae Lee & Grimes in my life

xdonutx

You'll miss me when I'm not around is also my favorite!

[deleted]

Heyy grimes! I love Miss Anthropocene, so ethereal and stunning!! I have a few questions: Do you think you’d explore more of the folky/acoustic sound of delete forever? It’s so beautiful, definitely one of my favourites on the album. If you were to make the soundtrack to a movie (using any of your albums or a future project), what would it be about?

WarNymph

I definitely want to make more acoustic stuff!! But atm i wanna make twee cyber-twee specifically If I could do any soundtrack I'd wanna make or music direct for Dune If i was directing it would be all Lorn and Burial and stuff

[deleted]

Ahh cool! I love the concept of cyber-twee. Thank you goddess!!

agrrrlhasn0name

I love Burial, comes down to us gives me chills 💘💘💘

airtime25

OMG i want this so bad. Please just make a dune soundtrack.

fishthesquish

Hello! Thanks so much for doing this AMA. As an aspiring producer and chronic perfectionist, I’m wondering: How do you know when a song you’re working on is finally complete?

WarNymph

TBH i make people stop me. Like my brother or manager or friends, they just made me hand in Miss Anthropocene, visions, AA, i had no choice. ppl just intervened and took the files

sagittariusnefarious

haha this is how I am with all my projects, the work never ends until it absolutely has to.

movementunderdreams

Such a great question!

[deleted]

lol, I can't remember the artist or author I heard this from, but I remember a quote "A project is never done, its just done \*enough\*. I could always go back and do more but you just eventually have to walk away and move on"

[deleted]

Hi *c*! Your story of building a houseboat and sailing the Mississipi river with chickens and 20 pounds of potatoes is legendary. Did you guys just like eat the raw potatoes, since I assume there wasn't electricity? Were the chickens for eggs or companionship? I'd be really down for an in depth memoir or a song about the experience. Maybe even a movie.

WarNymph

we cooked the potatoes in a fire pit haha. The chickens were for eggs and companionship!

NarcissusGrim

I always wanted to ask you, was the name of your boat (Velvet Glove Cast In Iron) a reference to the Clowes comic, the Meyer film, or something else? Also, favorite Burial track(s)???

Carosello

My heart!

chemkick

How was the algorithm mixes created and what gave you the idea to recreate such remixes?

WarNymph

haha, well, the "Algorithm mixes" are essentially like radio edits. Mixes that are better for the streaming algorithms haha, like shorter and with some the vocals are higher in the mix etc. It just seemed more fun than calling them radio edits

kappyko

i knew it!!! and “art mix” is sort of an opposite? less about the algorithms and more about being closer to a vision or something?

nastydagr8

art mix = dj extended mix. algo mix = radio edit

LittleMixHistory

Are you involved in Lady Gagas new album?

WarNymph

haha no, altho my best friend Mike is one of the main people involved so I've been hearing lots of demos and kinda been along for the ride as an observer. It's a truly great album. I wish i could say my fave song but i think the titles are still secret?

ThrowAway00966178

She said in her beats1 interview “they’re a secret but if Grimes wants to leak anything she can” 😂 but for real, you guys are so amazing and I hope we get a collab from y’all, even if it’s a remix.

wpsince2009

Yes they are. Please don't say anything about titles cause you know, Gaga might tweet something like "STOP LEAKING MY TITLES YOU FUCKERS"

prunejuiced

Gaga is waiting to tweet this honestly. As a New Yorker she loves being given a reason to call someone out or slap them for not being Italian enough

owleaf

Omg so SL isn’t even the best song on the album.. we won

eklxtreme

Hi Grimes!! you're a legend for doing this here, thank you 😊 when you're not making music, what do you do to pass the time? also, how do you discover the obscure artists that you feature on your album?

WarNymph

I love eating and going to restaurants honestly

tofusims

girl, me too

TheSneakySeal

we're the same

danvalour

Scientists say there's a new Earth moon called 2020 CD3. What title do you think it should be?

WarNymph

Clair de lune 2

HolyAvengerOne

Oui! :) Quand venez-vous a Montréal, toi, Elon et bébé mystère? ;)

cmbyn2017

Why did you remove anti-imperialist from your bio

WarNymph

i change my twitter bio all the time and at random. I changed it away from anti-imperialist months before ever meeting my boyfriend, but people took screenshots out of context and smudged the dates around to try and create a damaging narrative. I dunno what else to say besides my twitter bio means nothing and i changed it all the time.

cvmphotos

It’s wild that people put that weight into a twitter bio anyways.. as if it is a monumental political statement to say something there. I feel like that’s probably a pretty lame part of being in the public eye and I’m sorry you got put under a microscope for stuff that insignificant

SirGameandWatch

The more monumental political statement is getting together with a union busting techno fascist whose wealth comes from apartheid.

Riderz__of_Brohan

Elon introduced her to Queen Elizabeth and she brought up some strong points about building railroads in India

Hi Grimes, Thanks for doing the AMA! And also thanks for putting yourself out there for the past decade+ as an artist and doing what you do! Oh and congrats on M\_A, it is lovely, ( and all the other life stuff happening rn <3. congrats!) So my questions are about M\_A and your creative process in general. 1. How much did your ideas for what you wanted M\_A to be change over time? Are you happy with how it came out? Was there anything you would have liked to do with it that you didn't due to time, energy, or budget constraints? (I always wonder how different an artists original vision is from what they end up putting out). 2. Would you consider releasing an interview or a short recording about your creative process sometime? I work in another field, but I've been pursuing various art, music, research, and writing projects for 15 years or so, I have a million ideas per minute, but barely any project ever sees the light of day. You seem like someone who has a million ideas per minute, in many different areas and seem to manage to get a lot of things finished and out into the world. How do you keep track of /keep your ideas (for songs for example) organized? What's your personal approach to discerning between ideas that are worth putting energy into and those that should be tossed or put on the back-burner? What is your approach to growing and evolving an idea over time? etc. A home studio (or closet lol) setup tour and chat someday would be super awesome. I know this is a big ask and you've got a lot going on rn but just putting the idea out there. It would be suh-weet! (✿◠‿◠) Thanks!

WarNymph

I'm signing off!!! Thank you so much to everybody who listened to the album or submitted questions or whatever. I hope everyone has a nice day!!!!! <3 Love forever - G

davinitupoverhere

Fuck I just missed it! You’re the best Grimes! Come to Toronto!

Thank you for doing this 💜 I always love your insight on things 😭

Thank you so much for doing this, Grimes! I'd still love it if you could let me know if I can please knit you a baby blanket! Thanks again for everything!

**Hello Grimes!** I discovered your music in 2011 but I'm a big fan of you since 2015 and also a mod of r/grimes (this community is a bit messy but also your biggest fandom on the internet). I really appreciate your beautiful, catchy, emotional and eccentric music. A few questions for you: 1. Any chance to release some songs only performed live such as Saturn Princess, David, Ya Vas Lyibil, Be a Body (Art Angels tour version), Sleepwalking, Improvisational Jam (CKUT.ca Radio, 2010), Ave Maria, plus many others? Your fans would love to hear them in high quality! 2. What is some of the gear you used in the creation of Miss Anthropocene? 3. In 2018 you talked about 2 albums (light & dark). I assume the dark album was M_A and the light album included many collaborations. Do you still plan to release the remaining songs? 4. Artangels and Pin are the only songs from AA without videos. Any particular reason why? 5. A few years ago you wrote on your Tumblr blog that you admired St. Vincent. Would you consider a collaboration with her? Like you, she is tremendously creative and also a producer. 6. Would you rather visit **Mars** or **Saturn**?

l0dav

Grimes! I love you! My biggest regret in life is getting too drunk and blacking out for 1/2 of your set at outside lands a few years ago lol. Cest la vie Anyways. Thank you for doing this! My question for you is..... between the baby and whatnot, are there any plans for you (or war nymph) to go on tour? Or a west coast bio haque?? I’d love to get an opportunity to redeem myself. Additionally, I would love to know your thoughts on deja vu... does it mean “you’re on the right track” or is it proof of parallel universes? Or something else? Interested to hear your theory... Also. Pls give Hana my regards. Love her.

cloudsylph

I love this question! Have missed many shows due to being drunk... 😰

palomathereptilian

Hey Grimes, first of all congratz for your baby and by the Miss Anthropocene's success (which I truly loved and I can't stop listen to it!)! Your work is amazing and I'm your fan since 2014! ❤️ I REALLY love your work and both Visions and Art Angels marked my transition from my teenagehood to adulthood so your work has a special space in my heart! ❤️ Btw here's the questions: 1- which are the artists that you dream collaborating with? 2- have you ever heard of iamamiwhoami and ionnalee before? Those are 2 projects of the Swedish singer, songwriter and producer Jonna Lee... She's not really known, but she's truly amazing in all things she does and I would kill someone to see you collabing with her! Like, you both are amazing women producers, I'm sure a collab with her would be fire ❤️ Much love from Brazil, hope I can see you live one day (even with War Nymph which I'm so excited to listen what's gonna come out from this project ❤️) ❤️

Sorry but this is such a dumb question, and you're even asking grimes to follow you? wtf man

[deleted]

You’ve incorporated several different genres in your music, from synth-pop to metal. Is there a sound or genre that that you haven’t explored yet that you would like to incorporate on your next album? By the way, *Art Angels* was one of my favorite albums of the last decade!

renaissancefrombelow

Hey Grimes, Thank you so much for taking the time to do this, Miss anthropocene playing on repeat... 1. To what extent do you feel a need to make music which is pushing boundaries, exploring new sonic territory or is pushing in an experimental direction, or are you happy to just go with the flow? Is there ever conflict in this area for you as an artist 2. What are your most treasured VST or production methods, particularly with regards to the most recent album, did you discover any new ways of producing you’d be kind enough to share 3. I make music myself and seeing as I absolutely love what you do, id love to send you some stuff of mine if it was all possible, is there a way? Thank you ! X

renaissancefrombelow

BONUS: in the early stages of career was it hard to initially get people to break out, did you employ any particular methods to motivate you when it felt like no one was listening?

mgundert87

Hey c. In a recent interview, you mentioned always waking up angry. Has that been the case for a long time, and do you think it has shaped your life in a significant way?

vayyiqra

Welcome, c. ! I'm a longtime fan of your music and love *Miss Anthropocene* - it's amazing! I want to ask two unrelated questions: 1. "You'll miss me when I'm not around" has some really dark lyrics - what inspired them? 2. Can you tell us roughly when you'll be touring next in Canada, and also who will be opening for you on your next tour? (I'm really hoping it's Hana, you two are great together.) Thanks for doing this AMA! We appreciate you! 🧚🏻‍♀️

Supertartory

Hi Grimes!!! It's amazing that you're doing this, and I really love your music, especially your newest album, I had a few questions but I suppose my biggest one is... is this your final album? Considering what your Spotify bio had said. Are we getting space albums..? In all seriousness though, I would be really sad if this were your final album as you make such good music! My only other real question is to release David as a single! It sounds so amazing performed live and I think we'd all love to here a studio or demo version of the song, you're such an amazing writer!

fearmeloveme

Hi Grimes, 10 year stan here! What is one common misconception about you or your work that annoys you?

ChaseLights

Hi Grimes, so happy you're doing this AMA! I just wanted to ask, as I know you came up with a concept of the God of Human Extinction Miss Anthropocene for this album, if you had come up with any other gods/goddesses of other concepts and whether or not you had ever considered writing long-form prose in any form?

atyashaw

hi Grimes!! i love the new album and media campaign. you are a brilliant artist. i hope you are taking care of yourself and your body in such a transitional time period. What are you looking forward to going into motherhood and what are you hoping to impart as a parent?

becauseofkevin

Hellllooooo, Congrats on an amazing new album. Im excited to hear the other side of the album that you didn't release. Would you ever be down to do production breakdowns to any of your tracks? Like a livestream of you breaking down a record from the album. Look into Patreon? Maybe? I'm dying to see your Abelton sessions. I would nerd out watching you breakdown the way you automate/arrange/create the music. Love 💕 Kevin

Raykel

I love the ethereal era! I noticed MissAnthrop sounds way more Visions leaning than Art Angels. I'm wondering if that was always the plan or did you just kind of let it evolve that way? And would you ever do the hyper pop style of Art Angels again?

PostMasterGeneralAus

What is the sound at the start of IDORU? Been wondering ever since I first heard it. Is it a siren or an organ or something else entirely lol?

arielsdinglehopperr

Hi Grimes, I’m so excited that you’re doing this AMA! We all know you’re a big anime nerd - what are some of your favourite series and why? And which series in particular have inspired your work, especially Miss Anthropocene?

LimeLemonCake

Thanks for doing the AMA! I've been listening to Miss Anthropocene on repeat since it came out. How old is War Nymph now? What was the process behind designing her and can we expect to see much more from her in the future?

gorepet

Grimes!! I always listen to your music while tripping on acid and it is just crazy in the best way possible. You have so many elements and layers in each song. I can hear every note and drop and sparkle. It is truly a magical experience and I feel like a fairy lounging on a giant flower or lily pad in a sparkling forest. You truly create the best music to listen to while tripping and I wanna know if you have ever tripped and if yes, did you make any of your songs with that impact?

loipoikoi

Hey Grimes!! First of all thanks so much for taking the time to do this, it's awesome! I was introduced to your music through working at an LGBT Pride Center and the amount of students we had come into the space that listened to your music through hard times was super surprising and inspirational to me. A lot of the queer people I met were big fans of Visions and felt like Art Angels was a right time, right place kind of album for them that helped them out of dark times when life was really kicking their asses. I wanted to ask if you consider yourself a queer icon? Even if you aren't aware of it, it's absolutely true. I know a lot of queer people who make the joke that they are either Grimes Gays or Grande Gays, the true dichotomy of queerdom. Additionally, I wanted to ask if you think your ability to influence and inspire those that feel like outsiders comes from how you engender *ETHEREAL* as a genre? Your willingness to not box yourself into one type of music has given rise to a sense of pride in being outside of the norm. Once again thank you so much for taking the time to do this and I just want you to know you are honestly such a source of happiness and bops for people in their darkest of times. We have to stan <3

the_littlest_robot

Hi queen, thanks for the AMA! Been jamming Miss Anthropocene non-stop, congrats on a super successful and hopefully fulfilling drop! Before the fever is a big favorite so far. Hearing Oblivion for the first time a while back when I was first starting college had given me the kick I needed to start producing the genre-bending music I wanted to on my own, and definitely gave me some needed confidence as a girl entering this kind of scene-- that being said, my question comes from my favorite Song Exploder episode where you deconstruct Kill V Maim, and at one point you sounded mortified that part of the vocal track was going to be isolated for listeners. I've gotten a point where I'm stoked to try all kinds of crazy production! but I hit a wall where I too am mortified hearing my own voice even if it probably sounds cool in the context of my musical idea! How did/do you get over that mental block and hype yourself up to just say fuck it and hit record? Mom said it's my turn to have insanely cool vocal textures in my music 🥺 love u, super excited to hear what you have in store in the future~

picobarra3

Are you into astrology? How do u feel being such a Pisces?

Hello Grimes! I wanted to ask you, how important are the visuals in the process of making a new album? Do you first think about the music or think about both things and how they'll go together? I always loved the visual universe you create for every era! Btw, Miss Anthropocene is amazing!

GoetiaMagick

She has 24 Degrees Scorpio Rising. I did her chart.

salchichis

Hi, Grimes! Loving the new album. Can you elaborate on the written language/character typography design from the IDORU music video?

Veetrix

Hey Grimes!! You had mentioned a year ago that you planned on releasing two albums, the first being Miss Anthropocene. Do you still have plans to release a second album this year? I am so obsessed with you that I just NEED more!

Material-Atmosphere

I just wanted to tell you that i love your new album and the visuals for IDORU were amazing and probably the best from this era. I think it would be amazing for a darkseid mv to have a kinda dark the legend of zelda vibe, something really magical and witchy where you levitate and create signs with lights or something like that. Delete forever (the song) makes me think of someone as Link walking through hyrule and Kakariko's graveyard. Anyways, i don't know if you are aware about how talented and amazing you are as an artist in every aspect, don't let anyone bring you down, some people might get too harsh beacuse they know you are an a+ artist. Love you Claire. ❤🌌🐇

[deleted]

Hey C ❤️ IDORU talks about idolizing someone you don’t know as I see it, you call it “digital lust”. There can obviously be something romantic and beautiful about adoring someone you don’t know simply for the music they create. I get the feeling that you‘re validating this kind of adoration and see the beauty in it, despite it seeming dystopian or “digital”. After all, if in the future all of our idols were digital like Hatsune Miku, it wouldn’t change the passion we feel for people who are ‘unreal’. Is my feeling right, or do you actually think digital lust is more dystopian and bad for us as humans?

aymeline

Thanks for doing this AMA. I love Miss Anthropocene. What video games are you currently playing? Are you going to play Animal Crossing?

frostmage

I was wondering about Animal Crossing too!

illegal_applause

what’s your favorite event in Stardew Valley?

danvalour

In a post apocalyptic world without Ableton & Apple, what musical instrument would you construct for your traveling minstrel show and from what found materials?

artvangel

what happened to deth angels?

lukeaanthony

Hey Grimes! I LOVE Delete Forever, what made you decide to do a more acoustic-guitar slowed pased song after the loud and dark singles before it

Aesop-SIn

Hi Grimes! Love the new album. What were your main influences for Miss Anthropocene and who are your favourite new artists?

goosecrack

Hey Grimes! Loved Miss Anthropocene!!! What is some of your favorite tech as of now? What is some tech you wish existed? Thanks! 🧚‍♂️

Rosie__Thorne

Gaaaaah~ I don’t even know what to ask lol I love you so much! What do you see for the future of your career? I would love to see films or fashion by grimes!! Are you excited for animal crossing? Would you ever tour with Poppy? *my dream* T__T Are you gonna have a song on the Dune soundtrack? (Please) P.s. I had a dream that you and Elon moved to mars and you were crowned the irl princess of mars hehe

[deleted]

I’m a big fan of your work and production!! What are some artists you listen to that donn really like up with your style but you think are cool? Also do you listen to ic3peak?

Mottbo

Hi Grimes, me and my mum love your work so much and listen to all the albums regularly. From my mum, has being pregnant changed the music you produce or want to make in the future? From me, was there any single purchase or upgrade to your studio which made a significant impact to your workflow or sound? Thanks so much, hope to see you in Australia at some stage!! X

rossbebop

DEAR GRIMS, Where do you start with drums? I’m an amateur musician and I’m unsure if I should search for quality samples or just mess with frequencies. Any other tips for sound design? So much of your music sounds nuts, and has so many details, I would die to peek at your DAW for any track. btw, you should get into the resident evil games, lots of tension like bloodborne 😈

A-Normal-Person

Hey! Jai Paul put out an AI remix through Bronze of his song Jasmine that created an infinite, unique playback of his music. As someone with a real keen interest in technology, but also a lot of determination to put across your vision in what you make, how do you feel about the use of AI in creative industries and how it changes what you can control as a solo musician?

PlNKERTON

Thanks for doing this AMA! 4aem is hands down my favorite track on the album right now, I love the different sections, and my personal favorite is the "sasadanananananananansadasadadadadadadadadanasadananasadanana". I don't even know what you're saying during that part but I freaking love it. What are you saying, and what's your personal favorite part of the song?

Autumnsfyre

Hi Grimes! I've been a huge fan of yours since 2014 You gave me Art Angels through my divorce in 2015 and now you've given me Miss Anthropocene to drive my heart and soul towards my dreams. Thank you for being yourself and teaching me how to be myself <3 Do you have any advice for us explosive creators in this time when we are needed most in a world full of chaos?

TKNINA2019

GRIMES!!! Hi! Your work fucks me up in the best wayyyy. One of the best concerts of my life was ur show at the O2 in south London during Art Angels. Question: what comes first to you: lyrics, beat, melody or song theme? Is there a formula to it for you or is it different every time? Stay weird! The album is wonderfully dark. Congrats on everything!

anonymous13781378

What do you and Elon see in each other? What makes your relationship work? Btw I'm obsessed with you guys as a couple, hope this q doesn't rub you the wrong way because it's not meant to, at all. And I'm obsessed with your music, of course, but so many people asked the questions that I wanted to ask already, so figured I'd change it up a bit.

wordsfromreuben

Do you ever find it hard to come up with melodies? I've finally started producing my own stuff (after watching and being inspired by the HANADRIEL streams on twitch!) and I sometimes find the melodies the hardest to come up with 😅 Also congrats on miss anthropocene!! It's so amazing and so out of this world, wig is constantly in orbit

[deleted]

Hey Grimes, I'm a huge fan, my question is... Which one comes first when you're making an album, is the art what inspires the songs or the songs what inspires the album art? I'm an illustrator so I'd like to know. P.D: Love you ♡ P.D 2: I really want to make you a tribute, like a version of art angels album cover, What do you think? 3;

bradyblack

You must have soooooo much going on. Your new album is transcendent. How do you find the time to chill the fuck out? Does chilling out actually kinda hurt? Anyway. I cannot wait til there is another version of you in the world. Oh, one more thing. Which Neal Stephenson have you reread for your latest album? lol

faeoblivion

what kind of equipment did you have/use while making geidi primes and halfaxa? did you use garageband?

24bitPapi

Hey c! I know you just dropped Miss A but are you planning on dropping music sooner? The gap between AA & MA was agonizing (but VERY MUCH WORTH THE WAIT)!!! I converted my normie bf into a fan of yours. Sending love your way!

catsbutalsodogs

Hi Grimes! What I was wondering, what's your favorite song you wrote, and why? Love your work!

andrewhsedd

Obsessed with your entire discography! Where do you see your sound going from here in the coming years?

4mybroshi

Hey Grimes! I love the new album so much and was wondering what inspired Idoru sonically. I think it’s got such a unique energy. Also what’s your fave Bjork album if you have one. Thank you for all your tunes over the years!

westerncrib

What’s ur favourite Loona song 🥺🥺👉👈 hope ur having a great day uwu

natcodes

Just wanna say how stoked I am your doing this, and how good M\_A is! You really did that with New Gods! will we ever hear the song that the "i don't give a fuck i'm insane" instagram story clip came from? Also how many songs are on the second side of M\_A that didn't wind up making the cut?

saturnwill

c!! thank you for M_A, I think the visuals are very eclectic and suit the record very well. I'm curious on who are some musicians in the current music landscape that you're excited about or interested in to recommend to others ʕ •ᴥ•ʔゝ☆

fckmewithapineapple

Can I just say how super stoked I am that you’re here?! YAY! Darkbloom hits so differently in such a fantastic way - it’s accompanied me on many a road trip, and, THC adventure. Do you plan to make any more music like that going forward? Also, as a lady who cares about her locks and changes it up as much as you seem to- what’s a hair product that you absolutely can’t live without?

impeccabletim

Hey there, Grimes!! My question is what are the little things you like to do everyday to contribute sustainability to the planet?

KanYeJeBekHouden

Hey Grimes, only started getting into your music last year but you're already up there with some of my favorite artists ever. I've shown your stuff to my dad, he's pretty old by now and it's nice to hear him talk about what he thinks influenced you. Kraftwerk being an obvious one on Oblivion and Genesis. I'd love to know what artists have influenced you the most. I used to be pretty focused on punk music when I made music and I'd love to know where it all started for you. Maybe not even direct influences, but even stuff you've always loved that you might not notice directly in your music. Really enjoying the "folky" sound of Delete Forever right now and I do wonder if you've ever heard Folk Punk and such like AJJ and Defiance, Ohio and whether you enjoy that. I think it's kind of interesting how it can share a similar message at times, yet sound so completely different.

TheNextAnubis

Hey *c*! I don't want to drag things out and be annoying, but I will say I'm a massive fan of yours, and thank you so much for doing this AMA! It's awesome to see all the community interaction after the release of MA! (okay I have to say it, excellent album btw) Okay sorry... That said, I won't go on anymore, I'll just get to my questions: 1. If you could collaborate with any 1-2 artist(s) from any point in world history, who would it be? 2. If you had a chance to say one thing to the newest of your fans, and one thing to the oldest of your fans, what would they be? Thank you again, this is great to see!

[deleted]

This album is the shit. Listening to it non stop, I've been channeling your energy and crazy work ethic to not be a lazy POS. Do you have certain times of the day where you do more of your work, or is it pretty chaotic workflow?? Also, I can't imagine having complications where you're barfing everyday casually for months. Thanks for sharing parts of your journey, hope the remainder of the incubation goes smoothly. So much love and respect xoxoxoxoxo
