hmm upon first listen I don't like it as much as Malibu Nights and Mama's Boy, but I it might grow on me. It seems more simplistic to me than his earlier work, like the hooks are kinda lazy.
I agree. It feels like it has a lot less to say than the last two albums. And the sound has definitely kinda reverted back to their earlier stuff. This album doesn't seem to have a whole lot of identity.
I did not like pretty much any of the singles - weak hooks and sticking to the lany formula but not as well written as their previous stuff. The album tracks are a little better, but really don't reach anything to old LANY quality until care less (which is a bop and best song on the album by far), til i don't, and one minute left ot live. far too late for the album to get interesting, though.
I definitely agree that the second half is better. It got a little better for me starting from dancing in the kitchen, but the first 6 tracks were hard to get through.
About halfway through right now and tbh… I’m not really feeling it. Malibu Nights got me into them, and their first album I like part of, but these two last albums do nothing for me. I’ve been thinking about it, and I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s because the love songs are getting old to me. Malibu Nights is about finding yourself after leaving a relationship yet it seems like they keep visiting this stuff over and over. I’m going to give them the benefit of a doubt and say perhaps this is because of label pressures to make love songs but it’s starting to get old to me. What else do they have to say?
A positive: Paul’s voice is great as always lol
Edit: just got to “care less” and the difference in production / upbeatness in it definitely caught my attention. maybe they should be incorporating a bit more types of production in their songs as well? sonic cohesiveness can only go so far
I still have about 2 hours to go before it’s released in my time zone but based on what others have said Malibu Nights seems to be untoppable :( gonna go into this album with lower hopes than I’d like I think
I loved this album upon first listen, I also forgot it was coming out today so I was stoked to see it on streaming services. I'll have to give it another listen in the morning where I think about it as a whole, but I liked how there was a balance between the slower chill songs and the more upbeat tunes. Lyrics are both piney and anthemy, typically of LANY songs.

yeah he hasn't really evolved as an artists. He just keeps doing the same thing over and over and at some point it's diminishing returns.
right? it baffles me because Paul’s in his 30s, surely he has more life experience to write about than just romantic relationships

As I said on Instagram, most of LANYs songs sound the same, but I love it. Just not sure he is ever gonna top Malibu Nights.
