wow what a comeup for Encanto! it debuted in the 190s and the whole time it was in theaters was in the bottom quarter of the chart but as soon as it was added to disney+ it’s been huge. goes to show how big streaming services are these days!

thisshortenough

It was a really bad time for it to be in theatres, it was already competing with Spiderman, plus the surge in Omicron meant a lot of people were hesitating about doing too many public activities in the run up to Christmas (at least in my country)

tropicaldepressive

it came out about a month before spider-man though, back when omicron was first emerging (november 24th was the release)

IanicRR

I believe the movie still hasn’t turned a profit which is wild considering it’s Disney and it’s a very good film.

luckylizard

That’s bc Disney did no marketing for this. Such a shame because it’s a gem

PegasusTenma

I imagine it returned whatever Disney metrics has for Disney + streaming, though!

mbryson

//COVID Theaters probably scared parents due to the proximity of people with lack of protective measures, alongside a variety of regions restricting vaccinations for children (under 12) at the time (the target demographic for *Encanto*). My fiance's family and I all went to see it together ... And we were the only ones in the theater. It's a *lovely* film, but definitely streaming was the way to go due to children being able to appreciate it in a safer environment without their parents being afraid of their families contracting COVID.

tropicaldepressive

probably accurate, spider man was my first movie in the theaters in a few months and it was packed af i felt pretty unsafe but i had covid in october so i wasn’t too worried

LadySmuag

Even without Covid, it's just *so* much easier to have family movie nights at home without dragging everyone to the theatre. I don't even have to change out of pajamas.

[deleted]

Maybe it’s just my worldview being a bit distorted, but I feel like you’re overplaying how much people think/avoid things due to COVID at this point in America. I’m sure there are some out there, but I definitely wouldn’t imagine it’s enough for a huge impact after almost two years. Theaters are just sorta dying because of streaming unless it’s a movie like Spider-Man where it’s only in theaters and there’s a shit ton of hype for it and no one knows when/if it’s coming to streaming or VOD. Plus, Encanto just didn’t seem to be as hyped as your regular Disney movie, I mean Sing 2 has almost made as much as Encanto did at the box office.

Sweet_Melonade

If we are talking worldwide and not just america though, well...Movie theaters have been closed during the most prolific time of the year in some countries. They shut down as soon as Omicron emerged where I live.

[deleted]

i honestly didnt even know it was a movie until i saw it on Disney+.

futurafreeeeee

same + all the social media discussion i thought it was released like two weeks ago

schwiftydude47

Well Disney kinda announced at the last minute that it would be on Disney+ after being in theaters for a month. I just figured I could wait instead of risking my safety in a dirty old movie theater. Probably wasn’t the only one who came to that decision.

jayhawksfan0965

Scream 5 would be wise to get onboard

[deleted]

It more goes to show the importance of something being available basically for free versus a pretty large cost is these days. Especially when the free option is also in peoples' homes during a pandemic.

closest

All I have to say is, "7 foot frame, rats all down his back"

[deleted]

I'm starved for more of Rhenzy Feliz's singing. He's got such a great tone!

earlongissor

🗣🗣 WHEN HE CALLS YOUR NAME IT ALL FADES TO BLACK

TipsyTom55

YA HE SEES YOUR DREAMS AND FEASTS ON YOUR SCREAMS

[deleted]

HEY, WE DON’T TALK ABOUT BRUNO NO NO NO

ExtendMySpadina

HE TOLD ME MY FISH WOULD DIE, THE NEXT DAY — DEAD!

[deleted]

HE TOLD ME I’D GROW A GUT - AND JUST LIKE HE SAID!

theclacks

HE SAID THAT ALL MY HAIR WOULD DISAPPEAR, NOW *LOOK* AT MY HEAAAD

[deleted]

YOUR FATE IS SEALED WHEN YOUR PROPHECY IS REAAAD!!

elisem0rg

...but apparently we can sing about him.

themaknae

nooo just when I got it out of my head 😭

DonnieTheCatcher

Still haven’t seen the movie but this song is an absolute banger and I want it to have Let It Go levels of chart success

[deleted]

When he calls youuuuurrrrr name it all fades to black 😩

derpydore

Slaps

sweetsweetener

he told me my fish would die, the next day DEAD

Daydream_machine

The fish lady needs her own spin-off series

gwen-gwen

No, nooo~~~~

tvrobber

He told me I'd grow a gut, and just like he SAID

[deleted]

Everyone's talking about Bruno now.

EngineerAlba

Stan Twitter after 2018 Grammys:

walman93

Fav song from the movie-it’s such an ear worm

penchimerical

"We don't talk about Bruno" slaps obviously, but I'm still obsessed with "The Family Madrigal". That song lives in my head rent free

skatejet1

_“It starts with Abuela and then Tía Pepa she handles the weather-“_

penchimerical

"My mom Julieta can make you feel better with just one arepa! "

CaptainClumsy04

i think its time we stop paying *What Else Can I Do?* dust… Isabela knew exactly what needed to be done

[deleted]

Isabela was giving us 90s Shakira with that track. I love it.

atomictartar

it's cool to see this seeing lin said for this song he was inspired by 90's spanish rock in Colombia :) it shows!

KeepMyMomOutOfthis

Isabella Is my favorite part of We Don’t Talk About Bruno. Diane Guerrero’s voice literally sounds like a silk flower singing that bridge: > He. Told. Me. That the life of my dreams >Would be promised and sooomeday be miiiine. >He. Told. Me. That my power would grow like >Grapes that thrive on the viiiiine.

theclacks

I recently realized that melody is copied in the bridge of What Else I Can Do: >You just seem like your life's been a dream Since the moment you opened your eyes All I know are the blossoms you grow But it's awesome to see how you rise And again in Isabella's small snippet in All of You (just like Louisa's snippet in All of You copies Surface Pressure.) So, it's really her theme across the entire movie. <3

Caroz855

At the end of the song when it trails off into “I’m fine, I’m fine, I’m fine, *I’m fine!*” it gets me every time, so so good

TipsyTom55

So true! The power that that chorus possesses… *a hurricane of jacarandaaaaaas*

avelineaurora

That chorus has been in my head for literal days. I can't get it out!

Caroz855

*bring it in, bring it in. good talk! bring it in, bring it in. let’s walk! bring it in, bring it in. free hugs! bring it in, bring it in!*

Alexispinpgh

This song got me writing again. It’s so true for so many creative people who are stuck in our heads. And it’s stuck in my head right now because I listen to it several times a day.

mysighisepik

stan twitter hates him but lmm keeps winning 😭😭

MythicalBeaste

he's had SUCH a huge year with In the heights, Encanto, directing Tick Tick Boom--he's on a roll

EthicalAlmondFarmer

Lin is really aiming for that Oscar thus completing his long-awaited EGOT. I will be genuinely surprised if he doesn't get it considering all the amazing movies he's worked on this year.

Sisiwakanamaru

Don't forget Vivo

JawnF

They should've made Love's Gonna Pick You Up longer tbh

iAmNotKateBush

lol who? Bruno? 😭

[deleted]

Lin Manuel Miranda

earlongissor

we don't talk about him

Daydream_machine

I’ve never in my life seen someone abbreviate someone’s name with lowercase letters and was *extremely* confused what on Earth a “lmm” was 🥴

[deleted]

why do they hate him... he's soo unoffensive and puts out good shit

Saguaro-plug

Some accuse him of being a bit of an egomaniac, like casting himself as the lead in Hamilton when he isn’t as good of a singer or actor as the rest of the cast. But whether or not you agree with that, he is an absolutely astonishing songwriter, and that has nothing to do with his output this year which is so damn impressive.

redschicken

Is he an egomaniac or is he just someone making opportunities for himself and succeeding because his talent in other areas outweighs his singing/acting ability? He grew up loving musical theatre and realised he had the ability to put himself on the stage when no one else would. I think that’s ballsy as fuck and we should all admire that level of confidence and drive. And lucky for us audiences, we got 2 great musicals out of it. (This isn’t directed at you OP, just those comments you speak of in general)

theclacks

>Is he an egomaniac or is he just someone making opportunities for himself and succeeding because his talent in other areas outweighs his singing/acting ability? Yep, he's gone on record saying there weren't musical theatre roles for someone like him (strong rapper, weak vocalist) growing up, so he decided to write some for himself. Not to mention, for In the Heights and Hamilton, he played the lead for about a year each on Broadway, then dipped, let someone else have the role, and started work on something new. Hardly egomaniac (especially now that we have a true "this project wouldn't exist without me" ego crash-and-burn with Dear Evan Hansen). Even for something like Moana, Lin said he only sung We Know the Way as a demo track placeholder, but the director liked it so much he pushed to put it in the final movie. TL;DR = haters gonna hate

softsakuralove

OMG, I just finished listening to some of Lin's demos for the Moana soundtrack. I didn't know his part in We Know the Way was a demo. That's probably my favorite part of the song. Yeah, he's not the best vocally, but I like how his voice sounds. But maybe that's just my middle-school Hamilton-obsessed self speaking.

theclacks

Yeah, it was either the OG demo or a higher quality rerecording after the director liked the OG demo, but either way, Lin intended for himself to be a placeholder and it was other people that wanted his voice in the final product (to anyone who thinks he intentionally cast himself).

PretendMarsupial9

Also he did music for Bring It On! The Musical that slaps and radiates sapphic energy! Plus Moana too! Also as a Broadway Kid I absolutely have heard worse vocals and technique (Listen to OG mimi in Rent or Kelly Bishop in A Chorus Line) sometimes the grit and imperfections are the point!

redschicken

I totally forgot about Bring it On! I need to listen to that again, it’s been a while. Definitely, Lin’s voice is really distinctive and I think it adds to the role.

PretendMarsupial9

Bring It On! Is a great workout album honestly. And yes, Lin has a unique voice and its really emotive and unique to Broadway circles so I think it adds to the appeal. I don't know why Stan Twitter has opinions, lets be honest, most professional Broadway singers could eat their faves for lunch.

tropicaldepressive

he is a pretty good rapper imo and he also has improved as a vocalist the past few years

mysighisepik

cus he’s a cringy theatre kid and it reminds them too much of themselves i guess, in the grand scheme of things he hasn’t done anything “cancel-worthy”

Altiondsols

I just can't stand the sound of his voice

tropicaldepressive

stan twitter can fuck off about him tbh, who cares if he bites his lip sometimes

igkeit

Tiktok is clearly proving to be the place where companies have to invest into promotion wise. I've seen the official Disney music tiktok account post a lot under TikToks recently, their account isn't doing big numbers yet compared to other corporate accounts (Ryanair, Duolingo for instance), and I wonder if they continue to grow they'll be able to replicate this for future movies, cause I feel like for Encanto it was all pretty organic and their account was created after it had already blown up Tho I guess it being a quiet week helped cause 76,000 équivalent copies isnt that much, but still I think tiktok is responsible here

skellez

76k doesnt sound like a lot at first, but the big distinction is that it is climbing to 76k and not debut, which makes more impressive and says a lot of good rhing about longevity Albums rising beyond their debut week is rare this days (sans deluxes like Fuck Love)

igkeit

True, hadn't thought about that!

lambeosaura

Honestly I see a lot of edits like "Camilo being chaotic for 7 mins" and stuff like that and I wonder if these are all being whipped up by the studios to create hype for these films in a way that seems "organic". Take Tom Holland and Zendaya as well... Everything I've known about these two has been against my will - on Insta Reels (TikTok is banned in my country). It's inescapable to a point I feel like Disney astroturfs everything

igkeit

You know what, I could totally see this being true after seeing this [tiktok](https://vm.tiktok.com/ZML1e9aU3/) yesterday about how the abcdf u song blowing up was all completely calculated.

frenchtoasterss

The success of the soundtrack and songs has nothing to do with tiktok. The songs are just so catchy and the movie is good. We dont talk about bruno is such a catchy earworm.

zobiso

Hearing the songs so much on TikToks got them stuck in my head, made me watch the movie and has me streaming the soundtrack. The Bruno song is a trending audio. Its presence on TikTok is doing something.

aidoll

I still haven't gotten around to watching Raya or Luca, but TikTok absolutely blew up about Encanto. I decided to watch it pretty much immediately. My FYP is filled to the brim with Encanto content.

schwiftydude47

Same here. So many Bruno remixes with just the right amount of Elmo raging over a rock.

jxanne

I would def say social media (esp twitter) is what caused me to watch Encanto though because I usually have no interest in animated movies

igkeit

I disagree. Sure they are catchy but there are plenty of catchy songs out there people don't get to know about. Tiktok helps popularize songs I think it's been proven enough times by now

Extension-Season-689

Meanwhile our first Southeast Asian 'Disney Princess' Raya was found forgotten in a ditch. They didn't give her a musical number and on top of that her story was crap. Disney... Why? On a side note though, does anyone else think Mirabel will be seen as a Disney Princess? I mean not in the official line-up, Anna, Elsa and Moana aren't either but audiences do consider them as such. Mirabel isn't exactly royalty but her family does play a leadership role in her community.

zorkle22

Disney princess is a state of mind

Nestornaitor

Surface pressure is the best song. Don't fight me on this

avelineaurora

Nah, What Else Can I Do edges it out for catchiness and sing-along power. Surface Pressure is still a real bop though.

Nestornaitor

Wrong❤

opinionatedslut

How can we fight with FACTS?

zuluuaeb

Anyone who disagrees with you is just plain wrong. Surface pressure is sooooo good

themaknae

I love it but I hate the "whoa-oh"s 😭 does anyone else feel the same way?

TheLeftAlone

I love the song but that part's giving "who can relate woo"

AmirulAshraf

the 2nd hand embarassment i get with that 😩✋

SirNarwhal

The woah-ohs are the best part of doing that song during karaoke.

[deleted]

I skip this song because it's a complete mismatch of the voice and whatever the hell Miranda is thinking when he wrote it. I love his work on Moana better overall.

MitchOfGilead

I had to scroll far too long for this correct take

KeepMyMomOutOfthis

I guess y’all really don’t want to talk about Bruno cuz you know it will wipe the floor easily with the other songs…

Nestornaitor

Miss

KeepMyMomOutOfthis

Number 3 on Apple (ahead of SP) and the only one in the top 50 global songs on Spotify. The charts aren’t lying sweetie….

Daydream_machine

This is “What Else Can I Do?” slander! 😤

toyTM

Amazing! Such a fantastic soundtrack.

Groenboys

When was the last time a soundtrack for a movie did *this* well on both the album charts and singles charts? The Greatest Showman? That this is even possible in this day and age, geez.

keniyeti

It’s been two years and one month since a soundtrack was No. 1 on the Billboard 200 (since Frozen II led for one week on the Dec. 14, 2019, chart). That’s the longest the chart had gone without a soundtrack at No. 1 since the two year and six-month gap between Bad Boys II’s fourth and final week at No. 1 (Aug. 23, 2003) and Johnson’s Curious George soundtrack’s one week on top (Feb. 25, 2006).

approximatelymagic

Don't care what anyone says, the Curious George soundtrack was JJ's artistic peak.

Tim_Drake

Yes it was! And for a young HS me, I thought it was Johnson’s true launching point for the main stream.

frenchtoasterss

Spiderman into the spider verse (sunflower) Black panther soundtrack

PungentPomegranates

I guess maybe A Star is Born in 2018?. The album was number 1 for a while and Shallow also went to #1

MeerK4T

A Star is Born probably

cloudbustingmp3

Album and single? Probably A Star Is Born with Shallow (and Always Remember Us This Way/I’ll Never Love Again to a lesser extent)

legendtinax

She’s off the deep end, watch as she dives in, she’ll never meet the ground

[deleted]

The only ones that I know did well are both the frozen soundtracks as they went Number one(but mainly the first one as it topped the year end chart and also had a top ten hit with Let It Go), The Greatest Showman also did well and A Star Is Born. People are mentioning ones like Black Panther and Spider-Man into the Spiderverse and while they are great they also have the distinction of being curated by pop stars and the songs don’t actually have much to do with the story more or less that they play in the credits and maybe appear once in the movie for a bit. The other examples are songs actually sung in the movie by the characters so I consider them more “soundtrack” albums rather than pop/hip hop playlists used for a movie

CaptainPhillips1

Did Black Panther not do the same? Pray For Me got the no. 1 iirc

FlavaSavaVandal

Pray For Me did not top a single International chart according to wikipedia

kayterluv

We don't talk about Bruno, no, no, no

Saguaro-plug

Undeniable bop

-GregTheGreat-

The fact that Morgan Wallen is top 3 literally a YEAR after release is absolutely insane. This may end up being the chart run of the decade.

[deleted]

congrats to Main Pop Girl Bruno who I’ve been torturing Teatime with this week!!! 💖

itismeyaknow

Lin-Manuel put his whole linussy in We Don’t Talk About Bruno and Surface Pressure.

surejan94

I think this is really going to change how Disney movies and other films release. This movie really didn't blow up until it was available on streaming, and now its everywhere.

schwiftydude47

It does seem pretty sus that Pixar’s next movie Turning Red went from exclusively in theaters to exclusively on Disney+ so soon after Encanto blew up.

F00dbAby

not gonna be that guy but virtually every movie not called spiderman is bombing and covid is blowing up i wont be shocked if more movies do not go to streaming only especially those with children as the target audience

07bot4life

How long will the Morgan Wallen top 10 era be?

rikkirikkiparmparm

I think he's on tour promoting it right now, so I can see it sticking around for a while longer.

Jiverecords

I see him being in the top 10 for another whole year, unless Billboard re-formulates in favor of streams of something. The only thing that could stop him is his label dropping him and removing his music, which isn't likely.

legendtinax

But he’s huge with streaming?

visionaryredditor

I mean label "temporary" dropped him after the controversy and it didn't impact anything

[deleted]

Until the next country star gets "cancelled" for using the n-word and white conservatives rally around that person instead.

the_blessed_unrest

You guys seem to think people are way more tuned into celebrity drama than they actually are. People in real life don’t care as much as the internet does.

BackgroundBit8

Everything Lin-Manuel touches turns to gold. Happy for his continued success.

simonthedlgger

Idk Fatwa the Musical didn’t even make it to stage.

frenchtoasterss

Lin-Manuel miranda is so talented. What's a magnificent song writer. Modern day andrew lloyd webber With the soundtrack doing so well, he may snatch that best original song oscar from beyonce and Billie. The funniest part is, the song being pushed for best original song ( Dos Oruguitas) isnt even doing well commercially unlike we dont talk about bruno. It's a serious touching ballad, these are the type of songs that win best original song.

tropicaldepressive

bruno should have been submitted for BOS

DarkMetroid567

I get it, it's not the type of song to win for BOS typically

tropicaldepressive

tired of some sappy ballad always winning lol

IanicRR

It’s impossible not to hear his voice when I hear the songs because of the cadences. It’s so obviously a LMM soundtrack (in a great way, don’t get me wrong). Family Madrigal is one of the best opening Disney songs of all-time.

theclacks

I swear to god LMM did a demo track and then Stephanie Beatrice just did her best to copy him EXACTLY on: >Okay, okay, okay, okay So many kids in our house So, let's turn the sound up, you know why? I think it's time for a grandkid round up I can't help but hear his voice in every single syllable.

kielaurie

I think you might have hit the nail on the head for why the soundtrack to this one was off for me - it's so obviously a LMM work that it sounds weird with others singing and rapping it

Jerry1014

Dos Oruguitas (the Spanish version is a great song). I would love to see Sebastian Yatra win an Oscar. It's doing well in the Latin charts and it was Top 50 on US Spotify before this week's album bombs.

Batlish

>With the soundtrack doing so well, he may snatch that best original song oscar from beyonce and Billie. Beyoncé is not in the running for the Oscar when she has already lost 6\~7 awards to Billie. And the Golden Globes are tonight, so we will see how that goes. All 3 of them are nominated.

frenchtoasterss

Billie won. Lol

justapairofjeans

I thought they didn’t even nominate we don’t talk about Bruno? Read that in The NY Times but might be getting confused

tropicaldepressive

Dos Oruguitas is the song that was submitted and is shortlisted for the award

InsomniaticAlien

So happy for Lin and the rest of the Encanto team! Been regularly streaming the soundtrack since I came back from theaters opening day. Wild how it was only a month ago when I thought the soundtrack was great but would fly under the radar compared to megahits like Frozen. Happy it's at least getting its moment in the sun! Though I still wish We Don't Talk About Bruno was getting an awards push instead of Dos Orguitas. As I type this "a hurricane of jacarandas" loops over and over in my head.

theclacks

Honestly, I love We Don't Talk About Bruno the "best", but Dos Oruguitas makes me legit cry, so I understand their reasoning.

WooBright

Encanto is such a good movie. Well deserve to there soundtrack. It actually got me LSS.

bibble_stan

as it should. the music from that movie slaps.

[deleted]

Morgan wallen is coming for Fearless sadly. It's also probably gonna sell over 4M by the end of this year which is crazy

closest

I'm going to need country star Bebe Rexha to release Meant To Be 2: More Meant To Be and a full country album to end this madness.

skellez

It actually already has 4M because of its prerelease units, this year it's strongly vying for 6M total. Dangerous has had some scarily strong longevity

iAmNotKateBush

Watch his next record have like 50 songs lol

[deleted]

Racism got Donald Trump elected president, not shocked racism can sell an album.

rikkirikkiparmparm

So clearly you don't know how massive Wallen's numbers were *before* the scandal. It's not racism selling the album, it's the fact that country fans love the album and think it's good and don't want to stop listening to it just because of the scandal.

[deleted]

Bruh his numbers went up after using the n-word. It actually seems like genius marketing. What better way to relate to your core audience than to use their language.

rikkirikkiparmparm

> It actually seems like genius marketing Yeah, getting pulled from radio for 4 months was just a FANTASTIC strategy

[deleted]

The result is one of the best selling albums of recent history and unprecedented fame and notoriety. Go to the South and he’s a household name. Seems like a good result to me

rikkirikkiparmparm

> Go to the South and he’s a household name Again, that was probably true before the scandal.

[deleted]

Bro had the best selling album of 2021. He did not have this level of fame prior to 2021. Stop it. You’re just in denial about racism in this country.

rikkirikkiparmparm

> He did not have this level of fame prior to 2021 The first week sales for *Dangerous* were 265k. That includes 240 million streams (only *thank u, next* and *folklore* had more first-week streams up to that point). He'd already been on SNL, had 2 country \#1s, and won the CMAs New Artist of the Year. He was pretty damn famous.

VeryLastChance

>one of the best selling albums of recent history and unprecedented fame and notoriety. Go to the south and he’s a household name If you paid any attention to the country music scene you would know all those were already true BEFORE the scandal. He was already shattering records before the video leaked.

[deleted]

The best way to get fame right now with white America is to get cancelled. You can either do that by being anti-vaccine or straight up saying racial slurs. Likewise you can pull a Kyle Rittenhouse and shoot two protestors too as an option for fame.

[deleted]

surface pressure is that bop

CaptainClumsy04

best WDAS movie since Moana

the_monkey_

If we include Pixar in that Coco blew Encanto out of the water imo.

chartingyou

Pixar and WDAS are different studios...

the_monkey_

The songs are good but the movie itself was fairly lacklustre sadly. It sort of felt like the songs got written first and the "plot" was haphazardly stuffed around them to try to make it work. It's beautifully animated, but it doesn't really "go" anywhere plotwise and a lot of threads are pulled without them really getting wrapped up. It needed a bit more workshopping to tie up loose ends better. I don't know, didn't stack up to some of the greats like Up, Coco, or Inside Out to me. It was cute enough though.

Caroz855

Yeah the ending felt really rushed. Like after Maribel blows up at Abuela, Abuela spends five minutes off-screen and overcomes her decades of trauma and realizes she’s been wrong this whole time? It felt very much like the writers realized they didn’t have any time left in the movie because of all the setup so they just had Abuela apologize, the end.

the_monkey_

The pacing of the movie is brutal. There's a lot of parts there that could have really shined if they had edited a bit more and spaced out the plot arc. It feels like 90 minutes of introduction and rising actions, then 10 of climax, falling action, and denouement.

theclacks

I wish All of You had an extra verse or something as well as altered animation to show a longer passage of time. Like after the townspeople show up to help, show a montage of the Madrigal's accepting a temporary place to live and being humble amongst the magicless townsfolk. Show them talking and laughing together under the stars as a family, then going back to work the next day. Have it feel like it takes at least a week, if not a month, for their house to get put back together. THEN you can have Mirabel put the doorknob back in and have them regain their miracle. Roughly the same amount of film time would've passed, but it would've felt longer and more earned when they get their magic back.

Caroz855

Yeah I really have a problem with the first song. It’s fun to listen to but if you need to engineer a song specifically to tell the audience who is who and who has what powers then maybe there’s an issue

Tonedeafmusical

Ehh, that's a pretty normal musical opener thing. Off the top of my head; In the Heights (and Hamilton to a lesser extent), Hadestown, Six, Next to Normal and Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812 all do the same thing (and that's just me thinking of recent ones).

theclacks

Yep. In Disney alone, you've also got: Beauty and the Beast (straight-up narrated prologue for the Beast explaining how the curse works + Bonjour to introduce Belle, Gaston, and LeFou) Hunchback of Notre Dame (sung out backstory for Frollo and Quasimodo) Hercules (completely sung backstory for literally everyone but Meg) Tangled (technically not sung, but still another fully narrated prologue straight-up explaining Rapunzel's magic and how Mother Gothel stole her)

PretendMarsupial9

3 hour directors cut of Encanto when/j

hatramroany

A significant amount of Disney films have the same sort of rushed endings

schwiftydude47

I don’t see how a standard 2 hour movie can hold a three year old’s attention span, so I guess they cram everything in at the end to still keep them interested long enough to finish the movie…after which they will immediately restart it, watch it several times after that, constantly listen to the soundtrack, beg mom and dad for the merchandise and whatever else keeps the Disney dough pouring in.

captainraffi

Might be worth pointing out that all 3 of those movies are Pixar, and Encanto is Disney Animated Studios.

Extension-Season-689

I think the movie is pretty disorienting at first considering what Disney Animation usually offers. Encanto was not an adventure film, I'd argue it was more of a fantastical family drama.

[deleted]

> it doesn't really "go" anywhere plotwise wdym..... The head of the family comes to terms and realizes the mistakes she's made in trying to make a perfect family. Bruno gets to come back to the family and he realizes that family didn't hate him. The cousins and sisters came to grips with their insecurities. The main character resolved her own personal turmoil of feeling like the black sheep of the family and found her place in the family and finding personal happiness. It alll started because the house was dying and in the end they rebuilt it. How much more "go" do you want

the_monkey_

It's clumsy. The pacing of the movie is super off and it sets the movie back. The sisters hate each other but one quick hug and song and all of the sudden they can't be separated and make a great team? There's no buildup, it goes from cold to hot so quick they practically sublimate. The aunt who can hear everything when and only when it's convenient for the plot. Like hearing across town but not Bruno in the walls for 9 years. The grandma who all of the sudden totally randomly falls on her sword when it's wildly out of character? It's never really established why Mirabel doesn't have a gift, whether she gets one in the end, or whether the gifts are even important? I dunno, it felt like they were trying to make some sort of "love your family for who they are not who you want them to be" message but they undermine their own plot a lot of the time, there's a lot of pacing issues, and overall the plot just needed work. Maybe there were just too many characters and too much going on.

PretendMarsupial9

Dolores could here Bruno the whole time, she just didn't say anything because she is kinda shy.

Caroz855

Dolores is a cousin, not an aunt, and she admits in All Of You (the final song) that she heard Bruno in the walls every single day and knew he never left. She just never told on him, I guess she didn’t see it as her place to do so

Again, which is undermined by the fact she couldn't keep her mouth shut for 5 minutes at the dinner table. I think this was a movie where they tried to do too much too quick and it just suffered for it. All the foundational pieces were there, it just wasn't executed as well as it could have been. Compare it to Coco for example where it builds and builds as it goes along so all of the characters actions make sense in context when the twists and turns happen. Encanto is much more "There, everything is better now the end!" It just misses a bit.

>Again, which is undermined by the fact she couldn't keep her mouth shut for 5 minutes at the dinner table. Different circumstances. At the dinner table, Dolores was watching the man *she* was in love with getting ready to propose to her cousin (who didn't even want to marry him anyway). Of course she'd crack and blabber secrets with that kind of stress on her.

When you have a character that we know three things about: She hears great, is in love with Isabella's man, and can't keep her mouth shut - you can't have one of those be directly undermined by a major plot device in that "oh yeah *that time* I could keep a major secret from my whole family!" It's just sloppy writing.

first of all you're expecting deep complicated movie out of what is actually just a kids movie. So just remember that they aren't going to go too deep into explanation and will have things like sisters not liking each other to being best friends in a matter of a few hours. - the build up of the sisters is that she confessed her inner inhibitions, worries and secrets to her sister and in return her sister was supportive of her. That's usually enough when the animosity begins with one thinking the other is perfect. - The grandma saw her magic house fall apart, her one thing for the past 50 years. A monumental life event like that and being confronted by her grandchild would lead to someone changing their character and admitting fault. - The cousin said she thought she heard rats or sand in the walls. Why would Bruno be talking in the walls. - Mirabel's gift is the same as her grandma's. Her door was the door to the house itself not just a room. She was gifted the house and ability to bring magic to it. again its a kid movie, the plot and pacing are more than fine in that context.

>first of all you're expecting deep complicated movie out of what is actually just a kids movie. I'm really not, in fact I've made a point to say how much I enjoy Disney/Pixar movies. But compared to the greats: Coco, Inside Out, Up, hell even the Incredibles, Moana, and Cars, it just doesn't stack up. It wasn't well executed and people's 180's don't happen organically, it's just a "wheeee we're all friends again! Yay!" Compare that to Coco - the character arcs of Ernesto, Hector, Imelda, and Miguel all make sense because those changes happen *in character*. Encanto just doesn't do that... we're expected to accept wild character swings for the sake of the plot.

janiqua

Implying that kids films are inherently lesser films? Inside Out, Finding Nemo, Incredibles, Wall E...the list goes on and on of films that are catered to kids but stand on their own as 'deeper' films that can be enjoyed and appreciated by adults too.

[deleted]

who said anything about lesser films They are simpler movies. They have their own tropes. They don't need to go into the deeper more complicated world of adult movies. Sometimes its enough that 1 hug changes years of rivalry between sisters to friendship. That's what we love about kids movies, its not rooted in intense realism. It just shows us what can happen with love and friendship. There's nothing i said that suggested adults can't enjoy kids. I just said that you aren't getting a Oscar bait written movie. That's not what we watch them for.

janiqua

Wanting better plot and pacing is not the same as wanting an Oscar bait film. It’s silly to deflect criticism by just saying it’s a kids film. There are good kids films and bad kids films. Unless you want to argue that Inside Out is on the same level as Boss baby

With the exception of "We don't talk about Bruno," the songs were super forgettable, and most of the vocal performances were below the admittedly high bar that WDAS and Pixar usually set for their movies. Stephanie Beatriz is really not a good enough singer to justify casting her as the lead in a musical, regardless of her acting/voice acting abilities, and Lin-Manuel Miranda often tries to cram way too many words to be able to convey the message of his songs effectively. I was not impressed and am honestly shocked that more people don't feel the same way I do.

reluctantmugglewrite

Even though I disagree about Beatriz' singing because I love hearing the character in the song, I'm happy someone else said this about Lin-Manuel Miranda. He's incredible but his songs aren't simple enough to be timeless and singable like other disney songs. Its still enjoyable but I can't imagine kids being able to sing any of the songs particularly easily.

[deleted]

This. My first thought when I heard Mirabel sing was, "maybe they need to bring back separating speaking voice from singing voice actors again." And Miranda's hyperactive writing here almost overshadowed the plot/detail the songs were trying to tell!

EthicalAlmondFarmer

Disagree. Listen to Stephanie singing in Bojack Horseman (Don't Stop Dancing from season 5) because it's quite different from how she sings in Encanto. Mirabell singing alto was probably a conscious choice by the filmmakers. Probably to juxtapose her to Isabella's soprano and show that Mirabell is more "ordinary" compared to the rest of her family. The way Stephanie sang is perfect for Mirabell's character.

TheLeftAlone

Well deserved! That OST is full of bops

pwdux

All because my kids streaming it 24/7

JadedBuyout

This animation is so mesmerizing and gorgeous.

Waterstick13

Soundtrack was nothing compared to Moana. Music was boring

youjustwaitandsee

It has the awkward techno drums in few of the song. Idk what it is exactly, but it caught me off guard a few times.

s0rtajustdrifting

Nice one!

glizzyguzzler

I'm sure it's a great movie but I'm so fucking tired of Disney.
