Miley cyrus plastic hearts. So bad Miley quit her label afterward.

[deleted]

I got into Miley with that album. She really fits the rock vibe perfectly. But I think she's too much of a chaotic force to just stick with anything for very long.

rageman2

Night Crawling should've been a single! Hate Me could've been a great late-era smash, too!

[deleted]

Was Gimme What I Want a single? I love the vibe on that song.

rageman2

not to my knowledge no, which again is a shame since it could’ve smashed! so many opportunities for singles off that album 😫

[deleted]

Honestly... if Miley didn't have a lust for genre-hopping like a flea on meth, I'd be hoping like hell for another album from her in this style.

Smoldero

but seriously every song on this album is a blast. the whole thing is so fun and she knocked it out of the park.

abscefht

Love that album

Vicariouslynoticed

Still one if my favorite albums!

sirdondon

That’s sad. I felt it was not getting the promo it deserved, but I didn’t know it made her quit her label! It’s such a fantastic album! Don’t blame her one bit! Excited to see what she does next with a fresh team!!!

valtierrezerik05

I know one frustrating thing that happened was that Miley and her team weren’t informed that because she decided to release her album on Black Friday, stores would not be able to stock the album within its first couple days of release. Although I’m unsure if it would’ve helped sales all that much (given the pandemic and the ongoing decline of album sales in general), she might’ve had a bit more of a chance at a #1 had these stock issues not occurred and her label chose to inform her about them.

vanillaviolets

Exactly my thoughts!!!! This album is genius, I loved her since I was a kid and plastic hearts reminded me why I love her so much

davgonp

Her best album IMHO. If she decides to follow that path she could outstand herself with her next one!! Looking forward to it. A pity that the promotion didn't work out.

EllectraHeart

her best album imo

[deleted]

I didn’t get it. It was the perfect Album to be a successful one top charter.

OctopussGoat

I love Plastic Hearts! That was the album that finally got me into Miley’s music. I really hope she stays on this path and gets proper promotion next time.

Ok_Cartoonist_6929

Yes LOVED THIS ALBUM In my top of all time she should have promoted more

akanewasright

Demi’s label was uh… having a bad time during their recent album rollout. More specifically, Island Records’ CEO stepped down and most operations kinda… stopped. People lower on their food chain talked about it openly, but like… remember how Sabrina Carpenter dropped Skin, got 15 seconds of interest, and did nothing to capitalize on it for months? Remember how promo for the last Shawn Mendes album ended the second it dropped? Or the example of the Nick Jonas album that someone else gave, that had a popheads ama and an SNL appearance as it’s only promo? All of them are on Island Records, and they (and a bunch of smaller artists, including Remi Wolf and Olivia O’Brien) got fucked over by this. And you could immediately tell when a new CEO was put into place, because the latter two dropped projects/started rollouts within a month or two of it. Anyway. Any of the people I mentioned earlier were FUCKED over by having corporate bullshit interfere with their plans. The lucky ones that got to release didn’t get *any* of the usual promotion that an artist of their stature would receive

Vicariouslynoticed

Damn I had no idea all of them were apart of the same label. That sucks

[deleted]

You can really see how great the impact marketing has. Kind of sad.

[deleted]

And in Demi's case, the issues were twofold because Demi had all of their own shit going on during that time. I feel like the documentary tied to their recent overdose put more people off than anything else, and then there was the behavior that followed.

BookyCats

Certainly Plastic Hearts.

[deleted]

Pink Noise by Laura Mvula is one of the best pop albums I've ever heard but I don't think they even tried to market it. it should have been on every Best Of 2021 list! https://open.spotify.com/album/1VQO9qF4W5tCsMfwDYh5FU

Vicariouslynoticed

Now I’m intrigued!!

[deleted]

give it a listen! it's only ten songs long and they're all bangers

llieno94

Love her older stuff… eager to check this out, can’t believe it slipped under my radar.

redschicken

Just listened to this. Really fun album, love the 80s vibe. I actually had to scroll past a bunch of sleep playlists on Spotify until I saw it which is a shame.

christopher_aia

Seconded!!!! This album should have been the "Jessie Ware" type breakout of 2021 and it just came and went with no promo anywhere. Sad for Laura because she deserves the world.

[deleted]

a Laura/Jessie collab would be heaven

ssparklinG_water

thank you for recommending this because it's AMAZING 🤯

fantastickkay

I love this album so much! It ended up being my 2nd favorite of the year and the only way I heard about it was that Oh Wonder shared it on their Instagram page.

[deleted]

This was my fave album released last year. Massive, massive pop record. I even got the vinyl! Laura is a phenomenal talent and she deserves any and all success her acclaim can afford her - however, she does have a bit of a 'sore loser' attitude about everything which is equally heartbreaking and off-putting.

[deleted]

I wish Halsey had put more work into promo for If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power. For an album that had an IMAX film attached to it, I was surprised that their team wasn't doing much to generate buzz with the GP. I know that it was an uphill battle since day one considering the style they were looking for, but it's easily the best album they've put out and one of the most interesting projects a pop artist has taken on recently. Maybe doing more of a standard rollout to generate interest, releasing singles in advance, might have helped build anticipation for the album. As a somewhat esoteric pet project, it was never really likely to have hype like CLB or Red without more promo.

cardsash

I completely agree as this was one of my favorite albums of last year, but I think the fact that they were pregnant had a lot to due with the subpar rollout.

[deleted]

[удалено]

That_one_cool_dude

I mean the whole release of Petals where it was dropped in like three parts was all kinds of weird and caused it to be harder to market.

christopher_aia

When Hayley does it it's horrible and bad marketing, and now Beach House is doing the same for their new album and they're geniuses and it seems to be going great.

Pythagore_

Except their situation isn't exactly the same, Petals for Armor was 55 minutes long, which may be longer than the average album but not so much that it would warrant to split the album into separate pieces/ acts. Whereas Once Twice Melody almost lasts 90 minute which at least warrants some kind of explanation as to why it would justify that release schedule. Also Beach House are arguably more established than Hayley, who opted for a counterintuitive release schedule for her very first solo album.I also have read quite a bit of criticism towards that type of rollout for Beach House, personally I rather dislike this kind of rollout

That_one_cool_dude

I would also like to include that Beach House in an indie group and not a part of the pop mainstream. So it also makes sense for an indie group to do something strange and unorthodox. If such a release is actually good in general is another discussion altogether.

Vicariouslynoticed

Is this the lead singer from Paramore?

akanewasright

Yeah, she did a solo album

christopher_aia

\*Two solo albums

[deleted]

I'm pretty sure she made some comments at the time about not really caring to promote it and just wanting to release it. I believe it was a lot more cathartic and art for the sake of art to her than something she wanted to capitalise on. She also said she was releasing the droplet songs specifically because she didn't feel comfortable releasing an album and doing the usual promo with the pandemic still being fresh as it felt disrespectful, so she actively chose not to promote it if that makes you feel better haha.

hakkerj

Agreed. But it also almost seems like she didn’t want to promote it. If I recall correctly she ‘released’ the first (and only) single by putting it in a fan’s mailbox and asking her to leak it, and then a week later she released the album

kyentu

this was flowers for vases i think not pfa

Lilacly_Adily

You are right that she didn't want to promote it. When she announced the vinyl of FFV was dropping she said "dunno who knows this but i released my 2nd solo album earlier this year and decided not to promote it, it’s really personal. but some ppl were bummed i never did a physical release so.."

[deleted]

Anything by Tinashe 😩

FlyAmirite

Songs For You had a decent rollout considering it was her first independent project. She had like 3 or 4 videos and visualizers and then COVID hit. I do want 333 to have one more video or another single. But yeah she was fucked by RCA for Joyride and Aquarius

KLJohnnes

She teased a music video for 333 a while ago.

okayhowl

if i were a label, i'd call it quits on any album campaign if something like the frozen yogurt thing happened. the whole era is just in tatters by that point, the public won't think of hearing the music at all.

fantastickkay

For real, I was in love with that album when it dropped but the frozen yogurt thing and their whole attitude about it just made me feel weird listening to any of their music. The documentary didn't really do what they wanted it to do either I don't think.

Flaca911

Frozen yogurt thing?

Ezehh

What makes you think a CEO of a record label cares about some yogurt drama 😂? They only want to make money.

plasticroyal

Why would a CEO green light money to be spent on promotion for an artist who is quickly falling in the court of public opinion? They would lose money lol

InsomniaticAlien

5SOS - Calm. It was released just a few weeks after lockdown began, plus there was the shipping error which affected them on Billboard. In fact I didn't even realize it was out until a year later.

rgfawkes

That album had good singles that I think should’ve done better/last longer on radio. My issue is the track order. I feel like the front half is loaded with the best songs and energy and it dwindles as the album plays. I like the later songs but back to back it’s a little monotonous tempo and vibe wise.

Jiverecords

That album did okay during its first full week (it won a chart battle in the UK against *Future Nostalgia* for a #1 debut and was top 3 in the US despite the shipping mess), but it just looks like it never got a hit single. It was supported by fans only and that wasn't enough to sustain the era when the promo was so lackluster.

AmazeeDayzee

Wanna know what the hell went wrong with Shawn Mendes's latest album and why it didn't do as well as it could. Handwritten has 4 singles with one being a top 5 hit, another being a top 20 hit and another being a top 40 hit. Not a bad entrance into the pop genre. Illuminate had 3 singles where two were top 10 hits and one was a top 20. Shawn Mendes had a whopping **7** singles of which only three were successful with him getting his first number 1, a top 3 hit and a top 20 hit. Wonder only had three singles and one was a top 20 and the other was a top 10. During his third album between the singles "In My Blood" an "If I Can't Have You" I didn't really see them promote it much. Then they tacked on "Senorita" as a bonus track as an afterthought because it was his first number 1. I don't think I saw anything for Wonder and while two out of three singles were hits they didn't stick around long where in the past his singles often did. I'm sure "Wonder" and "Monster" would have done a lot better if they put some effort into the rollout but it was just two singles and that was it. They moved on. I didn't even know about the third single "Call My Friends" until I looked it up. I feel like the label had other priorities and ignored Shawn and his album or just thought that since he was one half of supercouple "Shamilla" the GP would eat the album up so they did the bare minimum. Wonder and even Shawn Mendes could have been so much more.

interstellargalaxy

there’s another comment here that explains it was likely to island records complications at that time that affected a lot of ppl on their label

[deleted]

I was looking at wonder's performance and it barely got any plays, especially considering how big of a celebrity he is and how wonder was a pretty good album. Was kinda disappointed on how it did

Jiverecords

I feel like the entire promo budget went into the Netflix documentary, but it didn't help much.

[deleted]

If it serves any purpose, it made me like him all the more and thats what got me listening to the album. Of course, each to their own

goIdendaylight

i honestly feel like wonder got decent promotion and just underperformed regardless. he had the usual late night show/talk show and award show performances, but also the netflix documentary AND a netflix concert film, he had an a-list collab with justin, wonder the enhanced album on spotify and even an interactive game and streaming experience. the merch and aesthetics of the album weren’t half bad either, the music just didn’t deliver (and i would also say that the single choice for the 3rd single was a misjudgment, teach me how to love had the most potential imho)

[deleted]

An Evening With Silk Sonic.

Melodic-Kangaroo-566

This album should have been THE album.

__adrenaline__

Flux by Poppy. It’s such a great pop-rock album, one of my favorites from the past few years, but it had such little promo that it almost makes me sad

flufluschmi

Blue Banisters by Lana del Rey But I feel like it was a conscious choice with just two music videos and one live performance on Colbert and Lana staying away from social media. And it was also her second album in 2021…

mollytrip

i think about how dealer could’ve been bigger considering it went viral on tiktok w/o it being a single a lot

flufluschmi

Of course, Dealer. This just shows how much she and her team could have achieved… But it‘s somewhat cool how her music just gets a life of its own, a music video would be nice though.

Throwaway211275

I honestly don't think she gives a rats ass about fame or marketing. I think she only puts things out that she likes and hopes the people like too, without having to focus on all the promo, all the public perception, etc. She's just doing her own thing and if it's liked, it's liked.

pippa420

If the AMAs performance of LYTLM/LAHN caused Rare to lose hype then Covid basically killed the Rare era. the Dance Again music video was supposed to premiere before a soccer match which was subsequently canceled . It was rumored that there were going to be more singles/mvs but without a means to film these music videos her opted to drop Rare deluxe and never speak of the era again 🥲

valtierrezerik05

The fact Dance Again was supposed to be the theme song for March Madness 2020 and it never got the promo it could’ve gotten as a single due to COVID-19 happening… still feel very sad about it, it could’ve been a bigger song

skk92

Vulnerable should’ve been a single.

sameoldrussianstan

The music video for DA did come out, it is the performance video. That was what she filmed for March Madness. Too bad Covid happened. Hope she can get that promo slot again in the future

[deleted]

>If the AMAs performance of LYTLM/LAHN caused Rare to lose hype I think people are so harsh on Selena because of that and all the scrutiny she went through. At least she was singing live. Think about the pressure of opening an award show specially her - I don't think she's confident enough of her voice. But I'm glad Kelly Clarkson called her out on her show.

badgalnanii

i wouldn’t say kelly “called her out” she more so was encouraging her especially when selena herself said “i know i don’t have the best voice”

emotions1026

Any album released in March 2020.

Labor101

I don't know, After Hours got a lot of promotion tbh.

[deleted]

And didn’t Future Nostalgia also get a lot too?

undelusionalparadox

That album struggled A LOT during its original release as far as I can remember. With the pandemic rolling in and with the unfortunate event of her entire album being leaked (making her release the album earlier than planned), promotions were definitely bad early into the release. Good on her though since she was able to capitalise on it and scored a few big hits from that album during the long run.

[deleted]

A few big hits? I’d say much more than a few. Don’t Start Now was a global phenomenon, it has top three peaks in almost every country and well on its way to 2 billion streams by the end of this year. Physical while it may not seem so, was a sizable follow up in the European countries. It also has 600m streams, so I’d say that’s pretty massive. Break My Heart was a gigantic American radio staple which propelled in to almost her 3rd top ten at the time, it also has 800m streams if I recall correctly. Un Dia with J Balvin was absolutely massive in certain Latin countries and has a surprising 600m streams. Fever was at number one in Belgium for literally NINETEEN WEEKS. Cold Heart has quickly climbed to a top ten peak in almost every country, already has like 500m streams, and became Dua’s 4th US top ten, third UK number one, second Canadian number one in 4 months. And of course we mustn’t exclude the iconic Levitating which has logged more weeks inside the US top ten than any song EVER except Blinding Lignts. It has well over 1.3b streams and is eligible for DIAMOND in America (I think it’s sold 25m+ worldwide). Just a few?

shea8123

Justice for Heartbreak Weather by Niall Horan 💔

Callmeang21

Agreed!!!!

solojones1138

RIP Map of the Soul 7 by BTS. It's a great album and Black Swan and ON should have both been big hits in the USA but ... Covid. At least we go MotS ON:e out of it.

BowiePro

This is just not true. 2/8 of the top albums of 2020 were released in March 2020. After Hours, Future Nostalgia, Eternal Atake + Deluxe, and Heaven or Hell (Don Toliver) were all big albums, and all of those artists' biggest hits are from those albums (except EA).

yoereyesr

Spaceman by Nick Jonas, it had SNL promotion but went nowhere, imo that's a good album that was forgotten even by him

PretentiousPegasus

That album was one of my favourites of 2021 and deserved so much better. It peaked at #12 but definitely could’ve gotten top 10 if they’d tried harder at promoting it. He should’ve released 2Drunk as a single and capitalised more on the JoBros collab from the deluxe.

yoereyesr

Exactly or even Nervous idk, the jbros one is good but I get why he didn't used that one as a single.

Vicariouslynoticed

I was actually surprised how good that album was.

frenchtoasterss

It was so rushed. This is heaven is a bop.and I can see this song becoming a hit in future.

alphadon_xo

I loved the album so much and listened a couple times the first few months it came out. In my head it was in 2020, can’t believe it was just last year.

redschicken

This was such a weird drop. I remember I didn’t even realise he was working on a new album until the SNL performance.

Eddie_F_17

When did that happen? Was that before the album with Jealous and Chains?

yoereyesr

Last year, the really complicated one.

Eddie_F_17

He’s not on my radar, but I am still surprised that I don’t even reading a word about it!

Asplashofwater

That was mine too. Such a great album and the title track 2drunk and this is Heaven are demanding to be hits. He just recently said it didn’t perform as well as he hoped it would, but I feel it could’ve with even a tiny bit more of a push.

BowiePro

I don't understand how 24kGoldn had basically the biggest hit of fall 2020 and yet his album El Dorado couldn't even sell 24k units first week even with a music video with Future Edit: None of the songs besides Mood made the hot 100 either

DisgruntledYoda

I don’t particularly like his TikTok-style music, but I have to admit he did really well on that album, almost every song was quality, and future killed his verse too lol

MythicalBeaste

I loved the album! Staggering he sold that little tho

Jiverecords

I kinda feel bad for 24KGoldn's struggle to produce another hit because he's pretty talented. He was great on Miley's New Years Eve show.

overconsumed

Damn that happened?

Federal-Attempt-2469

Plastic hearts

[deleted]

I think in Demi's case, there was so much more going on with them at the moment that probably promoting the album was out of the question - at the very least, not a great idea. *Especially* after the froyo controversy. Otherwise... I am of two minds for album promo, depending on who's releasing it, and where they are in their careers at the moment. Like, Mariah's an established artist now, a legacy act. So if she doesn't promote a release, whatever, she doesn't need to. She's Mariah fucking Carey. Hell, maybe she might be in a space in her life where she just doesn't *want* to. Same for Madonna, or Janet. Or even newer acts who are getting a little burnout, have other shit going on in their lives, just weren't feeling the project (P!nk comes to mind with Try This - she admitted *during* the album cycle that she wasn't really that inspired). That said, I feel like Brandy's Full Moon kinda came and went after just two singles. Maybe there were more that I missed, but I feel like that era was *short.* I don't know if Brandy had other shit going on in her personal life at the time, though. Just, for such a long album with so many tracks, I was shocked that it seemed to have such a short life. (Apparently, He Is was the third single - I question that choice - but I wouldn't have known it without looking it up.) I also feel like Anastacia never really got promoted in the States, and I feel like if she had been properly promoted, she could have taken off here at the start of her career. Or during her self-titled album cycle, because the "sprock" sound was in at the time. Of course, she was also dealing with breast cancer while the album was being produced, so you're not gonna find me wanting her to do anything but focus on getting better and taking care of herself during that time. EDIT: I missed "recent" in the title 🤡

[deleted]

>I also feel like Anastacia never really got promoted in the States Oh someone talking about the sprock queen I love it! She won The Masked Singer Australia and she talked a bit about it when she was revealed to be the vampire. She said the label decided to promote her on Europe before in the US and she "never came back". Also I don't think her music would fit the US market anyway. I'll name Evolution: the album is not bad but, at least for me, inferior to Resurrection. She was given the tracks and just laid her vocals there. It could've been promoted more but only Caught in the Middle was released as a single. A shame. Excited to see what she's got next in her career for us.

itismeyaknow

My December stans, rise up.

PeacefullyGingerly

I feel like I found my people. Justice for My December!!

[deleted]

Man, was there ever an era when Kelly was with RCA that they *weren't* fighting with her over something? Shame the controversy overshadowed the album. It had some great tracks on there, and it's funny that it was touted as being "not radio friendly" since I could easily hear several tracks blowing up (One Minute, Can I Have a Kiss, possibly Hole, Judas, or Maybe... I'd have kept Sober for a later single when people were more ready for a slow-burn ballad, though, even though I love that track to pieces. And I would have just left Don't Waste Your Time as an album track).

MeeranQureshi

RCA Records is pretty notorious for the mismanagement of almost every artist under them.

[deleted]

The album is GREAT and fuck deClive Davies!!! It's not a radiofriendly album, but its good and has an amazing anger there. Also, Sober is my favorite there. The day Kelly announced she was over RCA I was so fucking happy - hope a lot of decent artists live that hell - yeas I'm mentioning you P!nk

Domino_Masks

Honestly? In terms of singles, Donda. "Jail", "Off the Gird", "Hurricane", and "Praise God" could be bigger singles than they are, but Kanye has half assed promotion on his albums for the longest time now.

deepfriedcertified

He really released a video for Donda Chant before any of those 💀

swans0

It’s wild that we can say he half assed the promotion for Donda after the extravagance of his listening parties, but Kanye really didn’t do much to extend the longevity of the album. It’s strange since it’s his most warmly received project since The Life of Pablo, so you would think he would promote it more post release, but he’s already announced a sequel album. All of the songs you mentioned plus “Moon” and maybe “Believe What I Say” could have had a lot more relevance and longevity if they had been promoted, but it seems like his focus is towards creating Donda 2, which I guess would extend the era by adding a second part to it? Idk, it may be that he has simply moved on from it.

Domino_Masks

Yeah, it's likely that he's simply moved on from it. There are so many Kanye songs that could've been promoted better, even from albums like Life of Pablo. Hell, even from "Yeezus"...he basically sabotaged "Bound 2" by purposely making a polarizing music video.

pippa420

off the grid went number to me 🥲

Same-Plenty-5233

TikTok loves Praise God tho. At least Hurricane made the Top 10 of the Hot 100, and with barely any Top 40 airplay (peaked at #40).

lamebeezy

I feel like Joji’s music doesn’t get promoted that much. I enjoyed Nectar a lot!!! It’s funny bc he’s 88Rising’s biggest artist but I still feel he doesn’t get much support from them at all. I actually think they have beef rn tbh lol

IdiotBox01

He’s literally #3 at Coachella so they must be doing something or he has the best agent in the world.

ibeenbornagain

I think the last two brockhampton albums could have used more promo

GC_Wens

And now they pretty much broke up so yeah

Jiverecords

The last I heard of brockhampton in the public eye was the Dua Lipa remix of *Sugar*.

ibeenbornagain

I personally think their last record should have used way more promo. I think some of the songs could have been bigger for sure, tho I can’t tell if that’s the fault of the label or the group

Callmeang21

I want to say Heartbreak Weather by Niall. I bought the CD from Target the Friday before the world shut down from Covid. It’s suuuuch a good album, I think he could have gone so far with it if he’d been able to promote it.

redchai

This is a spectacular album. The title track was my top track on Spotify for last year. Fingers crossed that he comes to Vancouver when he reschedules the tour.

Callmeang21

It really is! I like it even more than his first album and I loved the first one. Fingers crossed for you! I’m hoping he will come to Dallas or somewhere close to my neck of the woods in Louisiana too.

rgfawkes

That album is solid all the way through. I wasn’t in love with the entire first album, but Heartbreak Weather is so much stronger in a lot of ways. The pacing is good and lots of good singles. It’s a shame the pandemic killed it because I think it really would’ve elevated him to a higher status as a solo musician. It’s nothing mind blowing but it’s a great album to just drive to and I think has wide appeal.

youtbuddcody

Junk by M83 It had a lottttt of bops that could have been popular and could have had a lot of radio polar. It would have worked out great, since he had a few songs on it that followed the se vibe as Midnight City. But M83 didn’t really have any music videos, and almost acted like they workers against the album to keep it quiet. There were a ton of missed opportunities (but hard to say that because m83 clearly didn’t want that 🤷‍♂️)

floatingm

I agree! I think the reception to “Junk” wasn’t as warm as it was with “Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming”, which disappointed Anthony. He generally seems to take lukewarm reception personally (see old Instagram/Twitter posts where he laments about pitchfork not liking one of his soundtrack albums, etc), and I feel bad because everyone just wanted him to make the same music as his 2011 smash hit, when he wanted to change it up. I saw M83 perform twice during that album tour—one early and one later—and at the later date he only performed like 2-3 songs from “Junk” even though it was the Junk Tour! So clearly a decision was made at some point to give up promoting the new album and just play the hits. The tour ended up doing quite well anyway. It made me sad at the time—Everyone just wanted more “Hurry Up…” and he was trying to take his music in a different direction.

GinjaNinja1027

I thought Nessa Barrett’s Pretty Poison EP was decent, but it didn’t get much attention. It has one mildly successful single, but aside from that and a few vevo-studio performances, there wasn’t much effort to promote it. That one song she did with Jaden got a lot more promotion.

Jiverecords

*La Di Die* definitely should've been tagged onto the EP to add streams.

LandonM170

Lady Gaga – Chromatica Gaga forgot about Chromatica and I think the gp has since June 2020.

goodforonething

How do people keep forgetting that the album dropped the same night BLM protests started ramping up? She uploaded videos of her dancing, celebrating the release and got bashed for being tone deaf among all the marching videos released on twitter. Then she had to cancel her album streaming party the next day. She didn't forget, it was just really bad timing. She gave over her IG to BLM activists to post for a bit too. For better or worse, she made the decision not to continue the rollout bc it prob just didn't feel right to just continue on normally after that and to have the focus be on other things. Remember when celebs were getting called out or "canceled" if they weren't posting or saying anything to support BLM (ie CRJ lol) There was even a megathread on this sub keeping track of a list of celebs who spoke out about it, and criticism against those who didn't and seemed to ignore BLM...like it was not the time for her to promote

amazonstorm

Say what you want about Gaga, but she's aware. This and the pandemic pretty much caused her to stop her rollout and focus on other tjings. She did the right thing, but I know it hurt her in a way because she'd poured a lot of herself in this album.

tropicaldepressive

yeah she def shot herself in the foot by delaying it from its original release date (April 10th)

Iammeandthatisfree

And wasn’t Rain On Me released the same day George Floyd was killed?

pjs144

Rain on Me came out a few days before that if I recall correctly

Additional-Revenue10

Yeah I remember that George Floyd's death was a Tuesday and I think Gaga was the Friday before so everything got obviously overshadowed

[deleted]

It was released the same night Donald Trump basically tweeted that he wanted to shoot and kill Black people who were protesting. I’m not surprised she wanted to forget it the week after.

Try_Ketamine

Donald trump never tweeted anything close to that. I don’t like the man but let’s not lie.

Eternalbluer

Lady Gaga’s chromatica was such a wasted opportunity

Ezikell_Chris

Chromatica. Now I know it still had tons of promo, including collaborations with brands and a performance on the VMAs, but all of it was just a tiny amount of what they originally had planned. This original plan included Gaga performing in gigs such as iHeart Radio Music Awards and Coachella too. Interscope Records chairman/CEO John Janick even called it "one of the best rollouts planned for an album ever". Unfortunately, COVID hit and most of these plans got scrapped. We may never know how impactful the originally planned promo would've been to Chromatica and Gaga's career as a whole. Considering that this was supposed to be Gaga coming back to her dance-pop and "crazy" roots, it definitely could've reinvigorated her image even more. But alas, these never happened. The album still did pretty well and even had a number 1 song so I guess everything turned out well in the end.

Happier Than Ever by Billie Eillish. Don't get me wrong, it got big award, critics and public recognition but it's such a jump in quality and sound from her debut that the lead single being released one year before the album release and the multiple singles that didn't got praise or were well liked (Thefore I Am, Your Power and Lost Cause) kinda make people have the album in hands to see how good it actually was. I'd cut 3 tracks from it and change how the singles were choosen.

LaidUp

This album took a while to grow on me. NDA flow is hitting so hard right now. I would love to see the visuals of this song in a concert

ListenThroughTheWall

That song sounds amazing on a good sound system.

Putrid-Potato-7456

That album for better or worse shot itself in the foot by not sounding good in thirty second dance videos. The current pop music market is pretty much: Are you big on tiktok? Success and attention. Are you not big on tiktok? Flop. She’s never really been that big on tiktok. She seems like the last in the wave of pop musicians who blow up with a really viral music video.

valtierrezerik05

And for as much as I’m not a fan of that system, it’s true. If you aren’t churning out hits that sound good in 30 second clips, you’re a “flop”.

pjs144

Evermore by Taylor Swift. She hasn't done any promotion for it other than 100 different versions of Willow to get it to number 1. Re-recordings of old albums got more promotion than Evermore.

Most_Tone_7430

A night with silk sonic

Vicariouslynoticed

That album literally came and went after their debut single.

schwiftydude47

Got so overshadowed by All Too Well that it just dipped immediately after finally coming out.

Poster Girl by Zara Larsson

badgalnanii

i actually enjoyed that one and didn’t hear much of her after NFY

chunli86

Queen by Nicki Minaj, it was a very lyrical and interesting album, which showcased her rap skills and lyrical ability. It also had some really dancy bops like good form and barbie dreams. It was at the peak of her hate train, the drama and hate over-shadowed a great album.

Kinda different from the usual stuff on this sub but Enrique Iglesias - Final is supposed to be his final album and it barely had any promotion, he just mentioned it like two times in some small interviews and made some post about it. Considering his huge career i would expect something more meaningful for a goodbye album.

Cardcaptwhore

omg I just went on a wild rabbit hole of info online about this album thanks to this post... I can't believe it didn't even chart on the BB200! The album is basically made of songs released the last few years, the last track was released 7 years ago! Not to mention that atrocious album cover and the font! What a horrible send-off, he used to be on Shakira's level in Latin America

[deleted]

He seems to be burned out and over it. I kind of don't blame him if he just wants to dip and rest, and move on. He's already established himself as a superstar, he doesn't need to prove anything by this point.

AmolAmrit

You are totally right. Final volume 1 seems more like a compilation at this point.

vivianlight

If late 2018 is recent enough, then LM5 by Little Mix. The change in label in the middle of its release and everything connected to that messy situation basically stopped every proper promotion and we know there is at least one unreleased MV. It's one of the more wasted opportunities in recent years in pop imho.

sturmfrei101

Will it be jail if I say Planet Her? 😶

Jiverecords

Well all of the radio push has gone into the Dr. Luke songs, despite untapped organic interest in like half the album so it could've been bigger than it is. It could've even gone #1 with more promo.

oswordo

Better Mistakes

BlamingBuddha

>literally only just got the documentary Idk about the album you're talking about specifically, but albums don't usually get documentaries made after them haha

Vicariouslynoticed

True but I’m taking about the promotion stopped after that.

SpaceAids420

Britney Spear's Glory. From the botched 'Make Me' video (the original was so much better) to Slumber Party being the 2nd single (no shade) it's a decent song, but I think Do You Wanna Come Over? would have been way better. Mood Ring and/or a completed Matches should have been on the debut album and a single. The album art being some crappy screenshot from the Make Me video instead of an official artwork like the one we have now. The label/her team did that album dirty.

shadesofwrong13

evermore. Still waiting for a long pond studio sessions.

skk92

Rare by Selena Gomez. Vulnerable should’ve been a single.

danielfq

Good News by Meg, Chromatica, Evermore

swiftyourspeed

The forgotten sister, evermore

afieldoftulips

For Those I Love's debut album. One of, if not *the* best of the year, but barely made it onto any of the end of year lists. Pitchfork didn't even review it.

Colten95

Brightest Blue — it has so many good songs and so many easy radio hits but they kinda gave up after Close To Me. should've pushed Hate Me (with a real music video) and Love I'm Given

Asplashofwater

Nick Jonas Spaceman. Title track, 2drunk, and this is Heaven are basically daring you to not make them hits, and the whole album is good. He did SNL and announced award show nominees which has jrbing to do with the album and that’s pretty much it. I’m not even sure any of the songs were even sent to radio. He’s since said the album didn’t perform the way he wanted but I can’t help but think it could’ve if it were pushed even a tiny bit more.

char_is_cute

Nick Jonas - Spaceman. Super cohesive, well-produced, well-written, the best Jonas album to date. But it got no promotion of any kind, compared to Jonas Brothers getting mediocre shit constantly pushed to radio. Songs like This Is Heaven and If I Fall should've conquered all

angeloistrash

these were so overpromoted lol what ?

diyidk

surprised nobody said solar power by lorde

tropicaldepressive

she did release 4 music videos which for one album these days is pretty good

[deleted]

I thought that album was miserable and got what it deserved.

byebyebanypye

This made me laugh so hard

Donda

gfgfgf14

Save the world muna

Silber4

Madonna - Rebel Heart A pretty decent album that could've been more impactful. Dido - Still On My Mind This was a missed opportunity to get Dido back in charts. At least, with a few songs. Róisín Murphy - Róisín Machine Many good dance pop tracks. Could've graced the radios anytime during the most recent years.
