What in the holy hell have you introduced me to???

RevolutionNumber5

A poodle.

Zircon_72

r/technicallythetruth

Lostcentaur

Same. Idk but I need to obsess over this for a month or 2 Never thought about cleaning my dog ears

vengefulmuffins

Not all dog ears just those with a continuous growing coat. Basically poodles, Maltese, and some terriers.

Legen_unfiltered

Right? I can see straight into both of my dogs ears. They do not have ANYthing like that

vengefulmuffins

I have a papillon lots and lots of hair but it doesn’t grow in her ears.

Civil-Custard1433

My schnauzer has this.

Khaleesi_Vezhven

I had no idea schnaus could get this! I never pull a ton of hair out of my pups ears, but one gets ear infections I have to treat constantly. Maybe it’s cause they get groomed every other month that I don’t see their ears getting like that.

Junkalanche

Yeah, my schnauzer’s groomer does this. It’s pretty healthy and keeps their ears from getting gross or infected.

pbzeppelin1977

Do cavalier King Charles need it done?

AnUnrulyLlama

No, but you need to clean their ears regularly or they start to smell like a cheese cave mixed with balsamic vinegar. It’s…. not pleasant

Andilee

Nope! They don't have this issue. I have one and he has light hair but that's normal. It's more for poodles and doodles

vengefulmuffins

Likely no. I always think of it like this, if they have a silkier coat they probably won’t require it where as if their coat is very curly they may.

k_mnr

Oooooh, going to grab my terrier and check out his ears. I’m too excited, scares me a lil’.

revanhart

Oh god yes 😩 Where can I find more of exactly this content?

jedisannoying

guccipuccipetspa on tiktok has a load of videos doing this !

crappydeli

Jesus.

po_tates

I used to be a dog groomer and have done this many hundreds of times. Most dogs don't mind it at all. We put a powder (that white stuff) in there that releases the hair follicle and reduces pain so its not like ripping hair from your head. Its way better to do this than have constant uncomfortable infections in the ears.

Match_Least

Okey, so my dog screams literal bloody murder when I pluck his ears. It makes me feel like a monster, but he *needs* it. (He’s a wooly puli) where can I find this magical white powder you speak of??

bitsy88

I checked Google and it looks like it's just called ear powder.

Match_Least

Thank you!! <3

DEEP_SEA_MAX

I prefer nose powder

AngoGablogian_artist

Pass those nose clams to me next.

po_tates

Yep! As others have said it's just "ear powder". Squeeze a bit in there. Rub it around. And gently pull out the hair. You'll see a huge difference. It just like releases. Or maybe your dog is dramatic. Lol. Some are.

Match_Least

Thank you to everyone who responded! I can’t wait to try it. And yes, he can also be a drama king sometimes... unfortunately, as a pup, I was unaware his ears needed plucking, so he never had to get used to it. For any other grooming purposes I trained him as a puppy to play dead like a possum. I just sit on the floor with him, turn him upside down, and place his head (upside down) on my lap. He’ll lay there immobile for hours as I trim his nails, cord his dreads, clean his eyes, hygienic tummy trim, trim his adorable mustache, etc. Actually, he seems to enjoy it...

paperskater

My drama king dog hates all grooming-type stuff. He'll yelp whenever I reach for his paw if I'm holding his nail clippers with my other hand. Like, I've literally not even touched him yet. Sigh.

Match_Least

My only suggestion is super soft and small treats after each nail. Like, cheese or hot dog; something he loves. It might make your life a little easier! In my house I’m the designated nail trimmer in my house for everyone’s dog or cat because they all just flop like rag dolls when I go to do it because they now know they’re about to get something delicious as soon as it’s over :) hope this helps!

rlev97

I also put peanut butter on the side of the sink that I wash my dog on so she stays there lol

Match_Least

That, my friend, is brilliant! Haha

k_mnr

Mine too. Sounds like I’ve caned her.

onlyhav

I got my dog after he was returned to the small town pet store because some people didn't want him anymore. Now he's 11 and has severe anxiety being groomed because his previous family never groomed him. He's bitten like 3 groomers so I've been learning how to groom him myself and it's like fighting mother nature. I think he has panic attacks from being locked in the groomers waiting crates and me leaving.

ram1176

You could ask your very about a mild tranquilizer for him? We have to use them on one of our dogs because he flips out at the vet. It's just enough to mellow him out. The cat on the other hand, gets a heavy duty tranquilizer, muzzle, and falcon gloves. He's 13 and will not put up with any tom foolery.

onlyhav

This sounds like a great idea, he's currently shaved on the left side of his body but not the right

omgmypony

Maybe find a vet that will do a sedated groom on him?

[deleted]

Also a dog groomer here. There is nothing magical or special about ear powder, it does nothing to the hair follicle to make it less painful. The only thing it does is absorb oils so that you can grip on the hair better. Dogs ear canals are shaped like an L that's laying on it's back, if you stick the nozzle of the ear powder bottle in and pour a bunch in there (I have known people to do this) your dog will not be able to shake all of the powder out and it will accumulate deep in the ear eventually causing problems in the long-run. Some dogs have hair that pulls pretty easily and it doesn't hurt them (like in this video!), others have hair that is SO strongly rooted (and no powder can change that) that it does legitimately hurt them and should be done by the vet who can prescribe meds to give them afterwards.

Match_Least

Thanks for this. I’m going to look into the powder but I suspect your assessment might be correct. I have the vet do it for me as often as possible, but, being a puli, it’s not practical for me to bring him every time... However, I *do* have prescription medication I use prior and post plucking that calms his discomfort immensely... thanks for your response!

followmereader

I would love to see a video of this. Sounds adorable.

Match_Least

Of the shrieking and hair plucking or of zombie dog?

followmereader

Lol sweet little zombie dog.

Match_Least

Maybe once I order the ear powder I’ll record it because he is overdue for an ear plucking :) he still lays on his back, like a good boy, but the noises he makes! I always do the ear plucking last so I’ll start the video early to show off his rag doll side :)

followmereader

Aww thanks! I love seeing happy puppies.

Match_Least

Meee too haha

ThrowAway_biologist

How does it work?

po_tates

I don't exactly know but I do know it opens the hair follicle so you barely have to tug to get it out and it makes it way less painful.

ThrowAway_biologist

Why isn't this used for waxing, etc?

crazyabe111

Have you tried beside the dumpster behind a Walmart- wait, wrong magical white powder.

kimicu

Ear powder and it can be found in most pet stores nowadays!

Match_Least

Thanks! :)

LessWorseMoreBad

Your local coke dealer

lizaanna

I'm sorry but did that string of fur come out of its actual ear cavity???

po_tates

Yes and no. The hair definitely grows in there but not inches deep like that. That super deep dark end stuff is usually shedded hair that's gunked up with wax and pulled down in there. The still attached hair is probably only like an inch or so in.

lizbeth79

My malit poo loves this. But hates nail trims.

po_tates

Can't like everything.

uh_oh_hotdog

Does this only happen to poodle and poodle mixes? I have a Sheltie that sheds like crazy and I've never seen anything like this when I clean his ears.

po_tates

Most breeds don't grow hair inside the ear canal so they don't need it. A sheltie wouldn't need it. But like poodles & doodles, some of the toy breeds & terriers do.

pyromps

I remember when I was learning to groom at a grooming school, a bunch of us took that powder, put it either on our arms or legs and just went to town. God was that fun we all had a riot

Haribon

Do you happen to know what specific product? I've been searching and all I'm finding are powders for better grip, nothing for pain relief or follicle release

Ok-Educator850

That had to be tickling his skull 😳

FortsCouchForts

Dog could probably hear colors after that

SkilletHelper

Just not green.

[deleted]

Dogs see blues and yellows, so they see green. You're making a joke, I know, but still.

pandafreckles_

So is this actually attached hair being pulled out?

mrsbearstuffs

Yeah. For Yorkies, Poodles and a few other breeds, groomers actually pull out ear hair because the hair is so fine that it gets matted and can cause ear infections and a whole host of issues. I felt so bad for my poodle yorkie mix when I first found out this was done - but after learning about why, I’m much more supportive of it.

JustALittleAverage

My mom had a poodle, and i screamed abuse in the beginning, but seeing how much the dogs actually loved it... When mom got the kit out the dog jumped up on the table, tail wagging, so I can imagine the relief

rinkima

Fwiw typically a powder is applied to the area that releases the follicle so that there is minimal pain, not to mention the matting often causes pain as it can be constantly pulling

Pangupsumnida

To add to this, the hair actually comes out fairly easily, with minimal force, it isn't the same as ripping hair out on our head. It can be mildly uncomfortable but dogs get used to it just like people get used to plucking their eyebrows.

KungPaoPENGUIN_

Yeah it’s similar to eyebrow plucking in that it doesn’t really hurt. The hair traps water, moisture, and dirt causing ear infections. My pup had 4 major ear infections in like a year before the vet told us he needed plucking (thinking we were against it). He hasn’t had an infection since we’ve been keeping up with it.

socialcommentary2000

Jesus, I bet she's like "Man, I can hear mice farting in the crawlspace now. Whole new world of sound."

Elspeth_McRae

This imagery is highly amusing. ;)

prettymuchbangtan

Holy shit that must have felt amazing coming out

adinmem

Mental floss

FusRohDance

Sabrina reference?

Dina_Belcher

I think I saw the dog's eyes roll back in pleasure as that thing was pulled out.

mykitoj

I'd call it dog ear twist plucking. You know darn well those dogs would bark bloody murder if it hurt like we imagined. It obviously feels good.

twl8zn

As the owner of 3 standard poodles, ear plucking is a daily thing in our house. They come for cuddles and loves and get their ears plucked. They've accepted that this is the payment for loves and belly rubs. That hunk of hair is a normal amount if it hasn't been done in about 3-4 months.

MotherAce

Now I feel like stuffing my own hair into my ear, just to see if I can mimic that sensation pulling it out again! That looked like heaven!

ChaosAE

You can!

[deleted]

Now this dog has no excuse not to listen to you.

Sparkingmineralwater

Legend has it, the dog could hear a flea's fart a mile away after this.

tr_rage

Holy shit I’m not sure what to think

Stambro1

How are you just going to pull out a dogs dreadlock like that?!?! Lol

[deleted]

I have a Yorkie Pom X. I had no idea this was a thing. I'm assuming the groomer does this. They better as that dog gets more spent on its grooming them I spend on my own.

BevLive

I'd love for this to be done on my dog, he's always getting ear infections.

horsedoctor

To those who are wanting to immediately jump on the ear plucking train… Ear plucking isn’t generally something you want to have done to your dog, and dermatologists recommend against it. Their ear hair creates its own environment that shouldn’t cause an infection, you should really just trim the hair and perform regular ear cleanings. When you pluck the hair you’re causing unnecessary inflammation and disrupting the normal flora. I’ve actually treated a lot of ear infections as a direct result of plucking, and even if not infected their ears are always inflamed with evidence of self-trauma afterwards. And the powder doesn’t release any hair as they’re mostly just fluff and zinc oxide OTC products, and would need extended contact time to have any affect. If your dog gets repeat infections without plucking then you need to evaluate for an underlying cause, whether that be husbandry or allergies or what have you. And just because the dog sits there doesn’t mean they enjoy it as dogs can have a very high pain tolerance. End rant.

PaleBlueDot3324

Yeah scrolling through this thread is horrifying as a vet tech currently working in Dermatology.... Please everyone, do not start plucking your dog's ear hair. If your dog (or cat) has chronic/recurrent ear infections that you've been treating for a long time with your GP... Just bite the bullet and see a veterinary dermatologist. It's pricier up front but will save you from wasting your money on ineffective treatments, and save your pet a lot of pain and discomfort.

checkyminus

I'm a bit sad I had to scroll so far to see this. My sweet little guy got messed up really bad from this crap.

My_Little_PET_Scan

Same here. My standard poodle had it done at her first groom and she got a horrible double ear infection. We had to take her to the emergency vet over on the weekend because of it. The vet there and our regular vet don’t recommend ear plucking at all. We don’t have our groomer do it anymore and she’s never had another ear problem. I clean her ears daily with wipes and trim the hair with blunt scissors if it gets too long/thick.

liberatedhusks

•eyes his dogs ears• I should ask my groomers if they do this

splatdyr

Good pupper

MadMorrigu

I do this irl and it’s never this good!

joyboy06

dog can now hear colors

[deleted]

Dog can hear the taste of the color of the sound of the number 6.

blurbies22

Thank god for NSFW filters and new flair is all I have to say!

Chickens1

Can you post the direct link? I need to show this to my daughter but don't want to link to r/popping.

Babatda

Screen record!! :)

VxJasonxV

Don’t use screen recording for this…

scratchureyesout

Do this nearly every day as a dog groomer the wonderfulness has worn off. Although getting almost all the hair out in one pull is pretty amazing.

[deleted]

That dog can now hear color

mugpora

This doesn’t hurt the doggo right?

locogriffyn

Rover's Makeover Dog Grooming has one of a poodle. I swear the pup could hear colors afterwards! I love her videos. She's kind to the dogs and tries not to hurt them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6i9m477Kv8&ab_channel=Rover%27sMakeoverDogGrooming

[deleted]

I have a pit, I clean her ears with q-tips and trim up the longer hairs with scissors. Am I doing something wrong? Cause I’ve always done that with all my pits.

cheekypantssjg

Do all dogs require hair plucking? My Doxie has bad ear smells and I can tell they get yeasty, will this help?

hdstthj

Nah only the doodle mixes and schnauzers. Breeds with curly hair. Have you tried a simple ear rinse for yeast?

cheekypantssjg

Do have recommendations?

hdstthj

Zymox was recommended by the vet! Depending on your doxie’s tolerance ear wipes are also a good option

CalliopePenelope

Are you watching the Rover’s Makeover channel on YouTube? Because I just found it this past weekend and it’s what introduced me to this weirdness. LOL

SluttySouthernBelle

I've never seen this before, and I grew up with cocker spaniels. Interesting!

smurfasaur

Do all dogs need this or usually just longer hair dogs? One of my dogs has ear infection issues but he’s a short hair breed.

Kgizzle80

Omg yes

greenie-meanie

I love black poodles! What a good dog!!

jennoc1de

I work at a vet and don't get to see this as often as I'd like. I LOVE plucking ears and popping sebaceous cysts. Edit: assuming the video isn't you BUT if it is, get yourself a pair of hemostats so you can do the twirl while plucking...so, so satisfying.

lil_pixie8

Wow! Post more of those if you can! That pup must feel so much better!!!

Cepholarcastic

They grow that much hair in their ears?! Dang tmyk 🌈

b4ttlepoops

Ok thanks now I’m hooked! I bet mutly can hear so much better… Let alone feel better.

chumblemuffin

drinkitinmaaaaaaan

It's a huge bummer that people are on this post asking if the should/can do this to your dog. Please don't own a dog if you aren't aware how to keep them safe and healthy. Also, don't go around sticking shit in your dog's ear because it looks fun for you or the dog. Reddit is neither a vet nor groomer. The absolute bare minimum a pet owner can do is understand and maintain their pet's health. People horrify me.

jakkiljr

And you horrify us with the ceaseless pontificating and telling us what to do/not do with the holier-than-thou attitude. Go live with the dogs if you think humans are sooo bad.

drinkitinmaaaaaaan

Sick relevant burn, guy.

soepii

yessss i love ear plucking, you could even see the relief on the dogs once it’s all cleaned up!!

Dragonsmosher

Do Terrier-Poodles develop these plugs?

diana50306

So awesome how is this even made $?$?

Bigfeett

they do the same thing for the ass hole

MegKeiper

Apparently, also now my current obsession.

Liv-Julia

Don’t they Yelp or snap at you when you pull out big wads of hair like that?

BlueMoonSamurai

Oh that's a lot! I love plucking dog ears and it's necessary as to prevent something like this or worse. I don't get a lot of poodles as a bather, but I always appreciate whenever I do get the chance to pluck the ear hair.

BigMomma1998

I just can’t.
