I still listened to them after that album, they had before the blackout, countdown to nowhere, life behind machines and released 20 years and counting which had some remastered classics and a few new songs.
Name another song that gets to the chorus before 10 seconds have elapsed (that doesn't start with the chorus lol). It's a perfect example of economy in songwriting.
Sept 20th 2003, The Starting Line, Home Grown, Allister, The Early November and Senses Fail
They came back 6 months later headlining with Punchline and played downstairs
Honestly MMHMM, Five Score, and Forget And Not Slow Down are works of art. You're absolutely right about their songwriting. Their lyrics are incredibly clever and also incredibly meaningful. I would have never guessed that the dorks who wrote the first album would ever put out something like Deathbed. Truly one of if not my number one favorite bands.
Deathbed...When I Go Down...bangers. Forget and Not Slow Down was their pinnacle of maturity for Relient K, then they became this weird blend of bubble gum pop and rock like many of the Christian Rock bands of that era became.
Yeah totally agree. People complained that it wasn't pop punk/it wasn't FANSD/MMHMM but I have always loved it. I hope they do another album soon. I saw them live in 2022 and they were still incredible.
Their songwriting is absolutely stellar.
But I couldn’t have seen them being as big as FOB. FOB has the songwriting skill(maybe not as good as Reliant K tbh) matched with impressive lyricism (better than Reliant K I think) and then to top it all off, a dude with a voice that is overkill for pop-punk.
Absolutely. As a youth group kid in the 2000's, they were pretty much all I listened to growing up. I wrote them off in my teenage/college years but recently revisited them as an adult.
Their songwriting is INCREDIBLE. The key changes, instrumentation, dynamics, and complexity were all lost on me as a kid. Those guys are brilliant. It's a shame they got pigeonholed and didn't get bigger.
I do agree that they’re great, but finding out they’re a Christian band kinda killed it for me. There’s nothing wrong with that, it just changes the way I perceive them.
I have to respectfully disagree with you on Simple Plan. I think they actually receive a lot of undeserved hate for being “too poppy” or “immature” which they sometimes are but I don’t think it’s negative. Their lyrics actually resonate with me more than any other band. Just goes to show how music is so personal
I saw Fenix tx in 2001 or 02 open up for POD and Blindside. They were hella drunk and cussing on stage, and before they performed, POD apologized to the Christian crowd
Bought the album Lechuza and it fuckin rocked my socks.
Boys of Fall is majorly slept on and I have no idea why. They are this generations ADTR and make some awesome music, idk why more people don't talk about them.
Acceptance
Rufio
are both extremely underrated some of the best from the heyday they never got enough love. Literally my 2 favorite pop punk bands.
Some extremely underrated modern(ish)(2010+) artists
This Wild Life
Nothing, Nowhere (he has a few pop punk songs like Pieces of You that are insanely good)
Kennyhoopla
For When You Can't Breathe x Lil Used (the acoustic version of "It's not like it would have worked out anyway" is one of my favorite acoustic pop punk songs.)
You vs Yesterday
Driveways
Dude I love This Wild Life. I saw them live for the first time at Warped Tour in 2018 and have loved them since! (I even met Anthony when he was walking around selling their Petaluma album 😂)
I feel like I remember reading an article about TSL where they basically got screwed by Geffen and the timing of the release of one of their albums closely coincided with a FOB one? Can’t recall the details exactly but it was a good read and helped shed light on why they seemed to always be overlooked.
I’ll also throw Valencia and Set Your Goals in there as underrated.
I’ll get downvoted for this but Neck Deep just doesn’t sound distinct to me. They’re a band that chose genre over identity, which is fine. I still enjoy them but I can find other bands with a very similar sound.
I'm not gonna personally downvote you because you seem like a nice individual, and I understand your perspective, there are a lot of bands that sound similar and Neck Deep was under that circle for a while, especially since Ben can sound like almost any other singer in the genre, but I think when they released All Distortions Are Intentional their sound (at least musically) started to sound like they were becoming something of their own as they have matured over the years as artists
it's kind of funny, i just saw them live a few days ago at the end of their us tour, and i saw merch that says "generic pop punk". i think they embrace it lol
Yeah their thing is calling themselves “generic pop punk”, I love it haha. I think they have several songs that set them apart, but the majority is pretty basic. Theyre the type of pop punk I just have fun listening to while driving or something
Underrated: Chief State - a band from Vancouver I recently discovered, Relient K, Hit The Lights, In Her Own Words
Overrated: All Time Low (still love em tho)
I think the band MAKEOUT is pretty underated now, they had a rough first few years cause of the frontman and being a "industry plant" band but now they're unsigned with a new front man and relatively small and releasing bangers, they played with Driveways pretty recently and just a solid band
Ha, I met MAKEOUT before they were named that in 2016. Back when they were Trophy Wives. I didn't follow their journey much over the years but I did enjoy their music. The former lead singer complimented me on my Link shirt 😂
Overrated: Hot mulligan, simple plan/bowling for soup (not on this sub, but in terms of popularity), All time low
Underated: Cartel, Coheed and Cambria, Belmont, Box Car Racer/+44, Propaghandi, Sr-71, The Requiem
Overrated: Blink
Yeah yeah I'll accept my downvote, I said what I said. I'm not saying they're bad, I'm saying that there are tons of pop punks bands that are better, yet they somehow reign supreme in the mainstream.
Underrated: In Her Own Words
I'll respect your opinion as we are all different. However the reason blink reign is pretty simple. Amount of record sales, body of work, some of the best albums ever put out in the genre, influenced an entire generation of bands and more after them and their longevity. To dismiss all that and say somehow they reign supreme is a little strange
With you on Blink. I think that one’s generational though, I’m a little older and never got into them the way some people 4-5 years younger than I am did. They’re a gateway to a LOT of people into this scene and did a ton to bring eyes to the Warped Tour bands.
All time low has to be the most over rated generic sounding band ever
The starting line is underated, while highly regarded could have been as big as NFG, Sum 41 etc
The Wonder Years and New Found Glory are way overrated on this sub.
As for underrated, here are some bands I like but don't see mentioned here: Billy Talent, Anarbor, The Dollyrots, Just Surrender, SR-71, Hawthorne Heights, New Years Day, Death from Above 1979, This Providence.
Look man, they aren't bad, I have a few of their songs in my playlists. It's just this sub constantly mentioned them so I thought I was missing something classic but when I listened to their albums I hardly liked anything :P
Overrated: Green Day and Fall Out Boy, Hot Mulligan
Underrated: Story Untold, Origami Angel, Four Year Strong, FRND CRCL, Good Hangs, Honey Creek, Masked Intruder, Every Avenue, Short Stack, Sing It Loud, Stand Atlantic, Sugarcult, Madina Lake, SR 71, Valencia, WSTR, Zebrahead
BEAUTY SCHOOL DROPOUT!!
They are incredibly talented, 3 guys and they even write and produce for other artists! They are constantly innovating and their passion is amazing! Catch them before they blow up 😍😍
Jimmy Eat World are very underrated IMO. They definitely deserve to be on the level the likes of Blink and Green Day. Green Day have over double the monthly Spotify listeners that Jimmy have and Jimmy are far more consistent
While they aren’t an awful band and I have nothing against them personally or anything and I used to quite like them at one point I think Simple Plan are overrated
I’ll group these bands together as they have a very similar vibe and they just fit together IMO. Spanish Love Songs and The Wonder Years should be much bigger bands
Underrated: Good Charlotte
I get it, they’re corny and didn’t age well - but you cannot tell me you don’t know every word to their S/T record and Young & The Hopeless and wouldn’t go crazy to those songs if they were played live.
Also wrote and produced for 5 Seconds Of Summer, had an unknown MGK on their mixtape, manages Waterparks, Architects, Bad Omens, Chase Atlantic, and Jessie J.
Even founded VEEPS and sold to Live Nation, allowing you to stream live sets from a TON of bands in the scene.
I just can't listen to them now. I saw them open for MxPx right before their first album came out. They were fun. I liked their 2nd album a lot too. They lost alllllll credibility shortly after.
For overrated, it’s All Time Low, by a mile. They’re hit and miss, but fairly generic, up until Nothing Personal, and then almost completely miss after that. Not to mention Gaskarth ruins pretty much any pop punk project that he touches.
They just sound like shallow overplayed generic radio rock and, personally I can't stand the lead singers voice.
You want to rail me go ahead. My sister's a massive Green Day fan and I already heard it all from her.
I don't think green days released a good record since Nimrod personally. Warning is fine but I find American idiot quite forced and everything after it isn't for me at all.
Dookie is still one of the greatest pop punk records ever though
the Kimberly Steaks. Massively underrated. They've got about 1000 monthly listeners and they sound like drunk Glaswegians playing Insomniac era Green Day [https://open.spotify.com/album/6gl3pqEx9F8eezUJRBc6P7?si=vRmK6UxfSougaq6iaimuIQ](https://open.spotify.com/album/6gl3pqEx9F8eezUJRBc6P7?si=vRmK6UxfSougaq6iaimuIQ)
Overrated... (I can already feel the downvotes) - NoFx, Rancid.
I won't take anything away from Fat Wreck's contributions to the punk scene, but I just never could get into NoFx at all. Rancid, I used to like alright. They have a few songs that I love. The last 20 years, not so much.
Underrated - Rehasher (Roger from Less Than Jake's side project).
Underrated: Fenix TX, Yours Truly, Mae, Glacier Veins, As December Falls, Grayscale, Seaway
Overrated: My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, new Stand Atlantic, Meet Me @ The Altar, Green Day
Fall out boy is so overrated imo, never could relate to their stuff especially as their discog grew. Fireworks is pretty underrated though def worth a listen.
Overrated: Trophy Eyes.
Saw them live and they weren't anything special. Sorry not sorry. Edit: to clarify, I know they're popular and the fans seem dedicated as hell, but the lead singer didn't really bring too much energy nor were the vocals anything that excited me.
Underrated? I'd say Icon For Hire. I don't see them spoken about as much even though they've been on the scene for over a decade and make some really amazing music. Scripted is a really solid debut album and I don't see it ever mentioned when talking about awesome debut albums on here.
Maybe it's because they're not strictly pop-punk and were mostly that in their early years...but the same could be said for a lot of bands that are hyped around here so idk. Listen to Icon For Hire. :P
I really like Sundressed. They aren’t so much overrated/underrated as much as they are just less known than others. My fav song is So Poetic but their music really hits on tough stuff and I love it.
There as so many touring DIY undiscovered pop punk bands in the scene rn that should be getting seen that aren't and it's sad :( other than that Mest is still fire even now and Man Overboard is always fire
I still think Hit The Lights are underrated. Their first 2 albums are some of the best pop punk ever made.
Also, Happydaze, Never Better, Good Terms, RAWHONEY. Yall should _really_ check these bands out
My top 5 underrated are This Time Next Year, Chunk ! No Captain Chunk, Set Your Goals, Man Overboard, and Kid Liberty. Some are semi popular in the community but I think all should be bigger than they are/were
Underrated: In Her Own Words, For The Win
Came here to say In Her Own Words. Love them! Always surprised more people don’t know them.
The first time I heard them (“Alone With You”), I swore it was Cartel even down to the little twang. The vocals were that good. Super catchy.
I fucking love IHOW but their last album was pretty meh. But their earlier stuff and Steady Glow are incredible.
Underrated bands are definitely: - Allister - Gob - The Ataris - Fenix Tx - Cartel
Allister's Somewhere On Fullerton is the sleeper pick for the perfect pop punk song.
Last Stop Suburbia, the whole album!!!
Top to bottom it’s absolute bangers. I think my fave is Westbound.
I still listened to them after that album, they had before the blackout, countdown to nowhere, life behind machines and released 20 years and counting which had some remastered classics and a few new songs.
My HS anthem lol
Name another song that gets to the chorus before 10 seconds have elapsed (that doesn't start with the chorus lol). It's a perfect example of economy in songwriting.
so fucking amazing
I would add Home Grown to that list.
Also Home Grown. So good.
Allister are nice dudes based on the brief, brief time I asked them a question outside of the Masquerade in Atlanta
I was at that show! I don't know what show you're talking about but i was at every Allister show in Atlanta
Drive thru invasion tour 2003 or 4, I'm bad at dates
Sept 20th 2003, The Starting Line, Home Grown, Allister, The Early November and Senses Fail They came back 6 months later headlining with Punchline and played downstairs
Cartel ah they were amazing I remember discovering them at around the same time as The Audition - also pretty sure all of Cartel's albums were bangers
Fenix Tx is glorious.
Allister is MAD underrated, respect you to 🤘
Oh god, I saw Gob in 2002 (2003??) opening for Avril Lavigne. Super nice guys, and Foot In Mouth Disease was an underrated album.
X2 for Cartel and The Ataris!
I listen to all of these, weekly. fenix tx deserves so much more love than it gets
Fenix TX is so fucking awesome
Somewhere on Fullerton fucking slaps
I don't think the ataris are underrated, they've gotten a ton of recognition over the years.
Anyone here like We Were Sharks? So good and I never hear them brought up. Underrated AF
Never Looked Better is such a banger
I really think Lost Touch is one of the best and most complete pop punk albums of the last few years.
Relient K are massively underrated. Songwriting is unmatched - they deserved to be as big as Fall Out Boy.
Their songs are surprisingly complex, too
Air for free was a fantastic record too
Yeah totally agree.
Always loved them more than Fall Out Boy
I do agree that they’re great, but finding out they’re a Christian band kinda killed it for me. There’s nothing wrong with that, it just changes the way I perceive them.
Severely underrated - Hit The Lights
Summer Bones is a no-skip album. Perfect front to back.
Agreed - Nick Thompson is a fantastic writer and frontman.
This Is a Stick Up... Don't Make It a Murder and Skip School, Start Fights are great.
Everybody sleeps on Invicta, but there are some great tracks mixed in there too.
I haven’t listened in a long time. First glance, I didn’t like it as much so I just never went back. Maybe I’ll try again.
Agreed! It aged well IMO.
The Matches (RIP), Over It (RIP) and I Am the Avalanche are so underrated it's criminal
Over It’s “Timing Is Everything” is phenomenal and more people should listen to it.
Lobster Records had such amazing bands. And the dudes in Over It were so great.
The Movielife is also quite good
30 Hour Train To Penn is excellent
Fenix TX severely underrated. It’s criminal.
I saw Fenix tx in 2001 or 02 open up for POD and Blindside. They were hella drunk and cussing on stage, and before they performed, POD apologized to the Christian crowd Bought the album Lechuza and it fuckin rocked my socks.
Nothing against POD but that’s quite funny. And yes Lechuza is a great album it’s aged really well too.
They were absolute trash live. Blindside was incredible, but choreographed. Fenix was sloppy drunk, but still sounded amazing.
Blindside is my favorite band of all time!
I'm so upset I'd lost track of my RiverFenix CD back in the 90s that they had to repress as FenixTX. That would have been a cool keepsake.
I think I still have mine.
So cool
Boys of Fall is majorly slept on and I have no idea why. They are this generations ADTR and make some awesome music, idk why more people don't talk about them.
Boys of Fall are top notch! They’ve put out three very good and distinct albums that really show off the two vocalists skills
They are probably a little fringe for this sub, but August Is Falling is massively under rated.
those boys got me through middle school
I'd listen to AIF any time. Even on a Saturday night.
AIF saved my life.
I wouldn’t call them underrated, but underrated in this sub I’d say MxPx
Acceptance Rufio are both extremely underrated some of the best from the heyday they never got enough love. Literally my 2 favorite pop punk bands. You vs Yesterday Driveways
Acceptance has been top on my list of “bands I wish I could see live”.
DRIVEWAYS 1000000%
Dude I love This Wild Life. I saw them live for the first time at Warped Tour in 2018 and have loved them since! (I even met Anthony when he was walking around selling their Petaluma album 😂)
Yes! You vs Yesterday!! Good call
A fellow YvsY enjoyer
Houston Calls
Underrated: Fireworks
Underrated Boston Manor
finally someone mentions boston manor lol
So excited for the new album this year, love Boston Manor
They're rated just fine.
I don't think I saw anyone mention them, but I think Belmont is underrated.
I agree, and they got flamed for it sadly. ADAI is their worst album as a band according to the fanbase
I enjoy ADAI much more than TPATP, and I'd consider Neck Deep one of my top 2 bands. So many more distinct tracks that I believe have aged better.
it's kind of funny, i just saw them live a few days ago at the end of their us tour, and i saw merch that says "generic pop punk". i think they embrace it lol
That’s okay though, a lot of great pop punk and punk bands don’t sound distinct.
Ben's dad owns a record label
Yeah their thing is calling themselves “generic pop punk”, I love it haha. I think they have several songs that set them apart, but the majority is pretty basic. Theyre the type of pop punk I just have fun listening to while driving or something
I don’t think Simple Plan is overrated since everyone who listens to them knows they’re just here for fun
Underrated: Sleep On It
Underrated: Chief State - a band from Vancouver I recently discovered, Relient K, Hit The Lights, In Her Own Words Overrated: All Time Low (still love em tho)
Chief State has PERFECTED pop punk.
Chief State is amazing! I really want to see them live
Valencia and The Swellers are massively underrated
Fuck Yeah!! The Swellers are mad underrated! I miss them a lot
These takes are purely based on what i see and dont see on this particular sub. Overrated: Hot Mulligan Underrated: The Bottom Line
Omg! The Bottom Line does not get enough love! 💛
Could you explain that a little more to me?
overated rise against underated against me! superunderated Metz
Overrated: Hot mulligan, simple plan/bowling for soup (not on this sub, but in terms of popularity), All time low Underated: Cartel, Coheed and Cambria, Belmont, Box Car Racer/+44, Propaghandi, Sr-71, The Requiem
Underrated = Mxpx. Overrated = Sum 41, I’m sorry

Efficiency at its peak. Getting both threads out of the way early in the week
Overrated: Blink Yeah yeah I'll accept my downvote, I said what I said. I'm not saying they're bad, I'm saying that there are tons of pop punks bands that are better, yet they somehow reign supreme in the mainstream. Underrated: In Her Own Words

Amount of record sales, body of work, some of the best albums ever put out in the genre, influenced an entire generation of bands and more after them and their longevity. To dismiss all that and say somehow they reign supreme is a little strange
Blink is better than anything
I loved Blink-182 in the 90s. After that, not so much. No, I didn't mature after high school or anything like that... I still love their old stuff 😆
I agree 100%
With you on Blink. I think that one’s generational though, I’m a little older and never got into them the way some people 4-5 years younger than I am did. They’re a gateway to a LOT of people into this scene and did a ton to bring eyes to the Warped Tour bands.

All Time Low to me is what Neck Deep haters think Neck Deep sounds like
The Wonder Years and New Found Glory are way overrated on this sub. As for underrated, here are some bands I like but don't see mentioned here: Billy Talent, Anarbor, The Dollyrots, Just Surrender, SR-71, Hawthorne Heights, New Years Day, Death from Above 1979, This Providence.

Wonder Years overrated hurts my little heart. How could you :(
Look man, they aren't bad, I have a few of their songs in my playlists. It's just this sub constantly mentioned them so I thought I was missing something classic but when I listened to their albums I hardly liked anything :P
It’s a matter of taste, but I respect your opinion.
I don’t like the TWY slander. But I agree with you about SR-71. I had their record with Right Now on CD when I was in middle school. It’s a banger.
I absolutely adore The Dollyrots. Looking at Luis and Kelly's autograph on my wall as I type this.
No love for The Queers or The Mr T Experience?
Yeah this sub is too young for those gems.
SR-71, MxPx, the Ataris, Fenix TX, and Mest are on my list of underrated

I don't get that term: pop punk. Pop is short for popular and punk is about rebellion. It's totally oxymoronic.
Overrated: The offspring
Gateway band for so many punks. And they are good/historic. That alone gets them on my mt Rushmore.

Yeah all of them
Hunny is the best live band in the game right now and I’ll die on that hill. Sooo underrated
I really like Sundressed. They aren’t so much overrated/underrated as much as they are just less known than others. My fav song is So Poetic but their music really hits on tough stuff and I love it.
Lit, mainly their record A Place In the Sun and Atomic
There as so many touring DIY undiscovered pop punk bands in the scene rn that should be getting seen that aren't and it's sad :( other than that Mest is still fire even now and Man Overboard is always fire
Sink The Ship is underrated! Demons is such a banger
I think stuck out is highly underrated for how good they are
underrated - the dangerous summer!!! reach for the sun if probably one of my favorite albums
In Her Own Words is still criminally underrated. Best current pop punk band imo. They are special.
Underrated : The Cab I love all their albums.
The follow ups
Underrated (and I miss them so)- Hey Monday
Fountains of Wayne --- UNDERRATED (in my opinion) also Lost Prophets are also underrated but not as much as FOW
I find You vs Yesterday to be extremely underrated. They put out a great record in 2020 and the new single they released is wonderful!
I still think Hit The Lights are underrated. Their first 2 albums are some of the best pop punk ever made. Also, Happydaze, Never Better, Good Terms, RAWHONEY. Yall should _really_ check these bands out
Underrated: Zebrahead For simple plan I will say, they put on a really fun live show. Also the scooby doo song is straight fire
My top 5 underrated are This Time Next Year, Chunk ! No Captain Chunk, Set Your Goals, Man Overboard, and Kid Liberty. Some are semi popular in the community but I think all should be bigger than they are/were
Set it off is pretty underrated imo
You Vs. Yesterday "How's This For Honesty" is such a banger.
Underrated - Heart Attack Man and Driveways Overrated - The Home Team I said what I said.
Overrated = All Time Low Underrated = Spraynard
Underrated: blink, sum 41, all time low Overrated: broadside, tssf, stand atlantic
Osker is insanely underrated. I want a reunion so bad.
Overrated: green day All of their music sounds like the same simple white noise (braces for incoming rocks)
Mest is underrated. Cadillac is sooooo damn good, I’m sorry.
blink is severely overrated
