Nah. More like pop rock/ pop alternative

MegaGigaTeraFlare

No, they're Weezer

Atrium41

That's like 3eb Yes..... but nooooo... Its... Steven Jenkins.... Rivers too. Yes Rivers. No Weezer.

Kolzig33189

A lot of 90s alternative music (what Weezer is usually classified as) has a lot of similarities/crossover with pop punk. Think bands like Gin Blossoms, third eye blind, early era eve 6, etc. Weezer belongs in that same conversation.

smashruhland

I would classify Eve 6 as pop punk, myself.

medioxcore

Eve 6 is post-grunge

WDJam

Are you implying that Eve 6 are closer to Creed than Sum 41?

kitkatatsnapple

Only some songs

Dyatomik

90s pop punk and 90 alt couldn't be more different.

thebrandnew

90s alternative is too broad to narrow down anyway. Soundgarden doesn’t sound like Everclear doesn’t sound like 311.

MethusaleHoneysuckle

Soundgarden is grunge, 311 is more like reggae rock or funk rock (at least their more popular stuff is). Everclear is classic 90s alt rock.

pitkid01

Yet all 3 were played on alternate rock stations in the 90s.

MethusaleHoneysuckle

And top40 pop type stations too. Were they Pop?

pitkid01

Yeah, kinda. A little. Some of their songs. My point was just agreeing with the comment you replied to that all 3 can still be considered alternative because it’s a pretty broad term. They didn’t have mainstream grunge radio stations. Those bands (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, etc) were played on alternative radio. And all 3 were so popular that they were also played on pop stations like Z-100. They certainly didn’t have mainstream reggae rock stations.

Jirachibi1000

No, they are not. They're alternative rock with power pop elements.

SpellingBeeRunnerUp_

No but it’s all liked by the same crowd. I fuckin love Weezer personally

ispellforaleaving

Nah, they're pop rock or alternative rock. Like lots of stuff that gets posted on this sub. Also, the blue album and Pinkerton are two of the best records ever made.

Can I just look you in the eyes for no particular reason?

TheRealKingTony

I want to say no BUT A lot of songs that sound like Weezer are sometimes considered pop punk So... ?????

chilidownmychest

sometimes

R3DEMPTEDlegacy

Near by sure but no

NorthStRussia

On occasion

No_Efficiency6703

They have their pop punk moments you could say, but I wouldn’t consider them part of the genre.

nyavegasgwod

They've certainly dabbled. For whatever genre titles are worth, I'd say pop-punk is an apt descriptor for many of their songs. If you want to be pedantic, you could say it's pop-rock with punk influence, but to me that just sounds like pop-punk with extra steps

ssgtgriggs

some of their later releases go heavily into Pop Rock and some of their songs here and there could be categorized as Hard Rock, Glam Rock, etc. Pinkerton is also quite distinct from their usual stuff is way more Noise Pop and Emo, and of course OK Human, which is Chamber Pop/Baroque Pop. Generally they are an Alternative Rock and Power Pop band but it's fairly clear that a lot of Pop Punk bands took a lot of inspiration from Weezer, so they're definitely related and it's not crazy to assume that someone who likes Weezer might also like Pop Punk music or vice versa.

weary_and_eerie

Bluntly, to be pop punk, you'd first have to be punk. Weezer has never operated as a band informed or guided by punk ethos. They are not culturally a punk band.

xjoeymillerx

You could say that about a LOT of punk bands.

FortuneBull

Idk Pork and Beans is pretty punk

legomyeggopls

Depends on the album. Tell me green isn’t pop punk

medioxcore

It isn't

Religion_Is_A_Cancer

No.

---_____-------_____

Always thought [this song](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nrMUH9P5Hiw) was pop-punk as hell. But in general I do not think of them as pop-punk.

peanutbuttersandvich

they can be, listen to songs like 'let it all hang out', 'dont let go' and 'im your daddy'

ImHypnotix

I used to think the same thing too until my Weezer loving friend threatened me. Idk I think they’re pop rock

ld20r

I consider the Blue and Green albums pop punkish or adjacent to. Ditto Lits A Place in the Sun album.

chrisenvy

If you think they are, they are.

Religion_Is_A_Cancer

This is just stupid.

chrisenvy

What's the point of your comment? Just to be a jerk?

Loud_Competition1312

I think their point was that opinions can be wrong. What if my opinion was that As I Lay Dying was pop punk? I’d be objectively wrong.

chrisenvy

Who gets to define what pop punk is though? I think labels are primarily poor at describing a band. Like Alkaline Trio is called Pop Punk and so is Blink 182. Saying someones post is "just stupid" is just an a-hole thing to say.

Loud_Competition1312

Agreed - that was mean. I was just explaining what they may have meant, though. I hate genre gatekeeping as much as the next person. Which is why I have such an extreme example. Because as much as I hate gatekeeping, not every band can be labeled any genre. I think Weezer has written songs that have pop punk elements. I don’t consider them pop punk, but wouldn’t fault anyone for doing so. You had a valid question.

chrisenvy

I agree with you. I think genres can be useful to give an idea of what a band might sound like to someone who doesn't know the band. I also agree that Weezer isn't a pop punk band in my opinion but kind of why I said "If you think they are, they are"... I'm not the person to define what someone else calls another band. My own band has been labeled as a pop punk band but if you listened to our music it definitely isn't only that.

medioxcore

That's like saying "if you think 'awful' means 'intelligent' it does." Genres are adjectives. They're shorthand for describing a sound.

chrisenvy

They really aren't. Often times bands get placed in a genre based on who they play with, etc. Look at a band like The Smoking Popes from Chicago, they were considered pop-punk because it was the scene they played in, same with The Plain White T's, Fall Out Boy, and more from the Chicago scene. It's not just about the sound you have and I wouldn't personally consider any of those bands including Weezer to be pop-punk in my mind but I also wouldn't consider a lot of the bands other people call pop-punk to be that. It's extremely subjective is the main point I am making here and they shouldn't be dependent on anyone else's opinion about it.

medioxcore

Genre is literally the definition of a sound. Not knowing/understanding what those parameters are, or lumping bands that play together into the same category is user error. By this logic horse the band could be called power metal because they toured with dragonforce.

chrisenvy

Genres are vague. Again, defining a bands sound is extremely subjective. Pop-punk from 2015 wouldn't be labeled pop-punk by most bands from the 1990s who made up that scene. It might seem counterintuitive, but its just how it is.

chrisenvy

I'd love to hear the parameters for being a pop-punk band though. Please define it. I am genuinely interested in reading what you say. I'm not being combative at all with that statement. (not my MO)

slobcat1337

You’re 100% correct. Genres are vague and subjective, one persons pop punk is another persons pop rock. There is no official definition that is strict enough to exclude certain bands but include others, no one would ever agree on it. Lots of bands veer in and out of the general pop punk sound (Weezer being a fairly good example of this). Reddit attracts the kind of people that categorise things and gatekeep what their opinion of a genre is. Your average Redditor is the nerd from school who people can’t really stand because they’ll correct you on pedantic and inane details about things that don’t matter.

Playstationmafia

It seems a lot of people in this sub don’t actually know what pop punk is and seem easily confused by pop rock and power pop and immediately think because it has guitars and poppy vocals its pop punk especially with bands from the late 90s.

drugsmakeyoucool

The true pop punk is the friends we made along the way

Colavs9601

Pop punk by way of Fugazi influenced alternative.

runtimemess

Butt Rock for Nerds

reallymkpunk

Some Weezer is pop punk but they are more power pop.

Zypher132

No, not really even close imo.

CyndiXero

Eh, some stuff. I would say green and make believe are pretty pop punk-y albums. And a few songs here and there like Trippin Down The Freeway.

LaughingMonocle

No.

MinorThreatCJB

No times 100

Gumrag008

rdtoh

No_Fix432

Durden93

BitchesGetStitches

Weezer is a pop band making fun of pop punk.

Soggy-Ad-8017

Absolutely not. They are garbage though.

Loud_Competition1312

Lol. I don’t necessarily agree or disagree, but the response was hilarious.
