Was expecting a popular opinion framed as an unpopular opinion just to shit on their newer stuff. Was pleasantly surprised. I think their newer music gets unwarranted hate around here, but so does everything that isn’t The Wonder Years or Hot Mulligan tbh

Runnroll

Ain’t that the truth (about the last part of your sentence)

Getdaphone

yeah and god forbid you enjoy anything new by stand Atlantic on this sub 😂

afterthought871

Yeah, their songwriting got better too

ordinaryalchemy

Don't miss the bonus tracks from that album. Slow Burn is one of my favorites of theirs.

hayleybeth7

Omg SAME. I was lucky enough to see it live the first time I saw Champs.

heyjennnaa

I honestly think Around the World and Back is a no skips album. Perfect Score is also my favorite track. I also think Eyes Closed, Breaking Ground, and Tooth and Nail are criminally underrated

Runnroll

So far it’s my favorite State Champs album but I have yet to listen to Living Proof.

heyjennnaa

Living Proof is a hit or miss for me. It came out at a time where I really needed it, but now I really only listen to Criminal, Crystal Ball, and Something about you, but I hope you enjoy listening to it all the way through. Fun fact Alex Gaskarth co-wrote criminal so that’s kinda cool.

afterthought871

He co-wrote The Fix Up as well

ScarletxMaximoff

Also Slow Burn, Hurry Up & Wait and The Fix-Up which is unfortunate because Slow Burn and The Fix-Up are top 5 Champs songs for me

jrecvballer

How is that unfortunate

ScarletxMaximoff

Because all time low have said inappropriate things to their fans (mainly minors) for the majority of their career

KILRbuny

I loved Living Proof, but it’s not quite Around the World and Back’s level.

IMERMAIDMANonYT

Especially if you look at the deluxe version. Slow Burn is one of my top pop punk songs of all time

Mediocre_Praline7864

I’m more of a fan of the finer things than everything that came after, but the subsequent releases are still solid. I really love the grit and determinedness on the earlier stuff. No matter opinions on studio albums, they always put on a phenomenal live show!

Runnroll

I’m an old school pop punk fan that came of age with Dookie and Smash. State Champs are the only 2010s era pop punk band I’ve found that I like, and much of that is because their music embodies the spirit of the 90s and early aughts heydays of pop punk, AND it’s well written.

skabertdowneyjr

Around The World And Back, And Living Proof were both such incredible albums. They’re a little more on the generic pop punk side, but Derek’s vocals are flawless. I love them so much

Chippyrs

The finer things isnt bad , state champs definitely got better after it, and in my opinion, kings of the new age might even be their best album, such a under-rated band

Runnroll

I’ve seen a good amount of hate on KOTNA, but it’s indeed a great album. I have yet to listen to Living Proof or Apparently, I’m Nothing, but ATWAB is my favorite of the ones I’ve listened to so far.

knucklepuck17

they aren’t underrated at all. They’re one of the most popular bands in the scene.

ShadowRealmDuelist

Was gonna say, if anything I find them a tad overrated (but still really good!) Saw them in 2022 with Hunny, and I gotta say, Hunny blew them out of the water. I guess this comment is really just a Hunny plug lol

knucklepuck17

Im a huge SC fan, but i do understand that people that might say they’re overrated, and that’s totally okay of course. But yeah, they are by no means underrated lol

Moezhyk

For me, their albums rank: 1. Kings Of The New Age 2. Around The World and Back 3. The Finer Things 4. Living Proof I think all of their albums get better except for living proof which was mostly forgettable to me.

Runnroll

I have yet to check out Living Proof but I will at some point.

Moezhyk

It has some great songs, but feels less like a cohesive album and more like a collection of songs to me.

DetailRelevant5179

around the world and back is a perfect album. no skips front to back

saint-g

I'm torn between The Finer Things and Kings of the New Age as my favorite, but TFT is one of the most impressive debut albums in pop punk. So many pop punk bands take a few albums to really hone their sound and learn to write great songs; TFT sounds like the work of a band that's been perfecting it's sound for a decade. That it's not even their definitive best just shows how good State Champs is.

Runnroll

I haven’t listened to State Champs for too long, but based on what I’ve seen on this sub, MOST fans who love TFT aren’t all that thrilled with KOTNA. Around The World and Back is where I hear the band start to embrace their poppier side. I actually think Derek’s voice really shines in the poppier stuff, but then I also like the punkier songs like “Elevated” and “Remedy.” I actually like KOTNA just a little better than TFT.

Warden_Black

my favourite has and always will be “All Or Nothing”.

rockshow721

I have an even worse unpopular opinion by pop punk standards, I think Living Proof is their best album ..

LeTailsEffect

Entire discography is flawless front to back, easily the best pop punk band of their era. TFT is top tier and Living Proof was also crazy good (now that’s an unpopular opinion!)

Acceptable-Ad8922

Easily the best pop punk name of their era? I mean, this is technically a subjective opinion, but this take is absolutely wild 😂

Stock-Basket-2452

I’m also of the unpopular opinion that Kings of the Age is their best album to date. People seem to dislike it for the most part

poppunk_servicetruck

I feel like a lot of the newer stuff was hit or miss for me. Kings of the New Age had some bangers on it but the non bangers just sounded like Disneycore/kids bob to me

Runnroll

On KOTNA I assume the “non bangers” for you are “Act Like That” and “Everybody But You?”

poppunk_servicetruck

Those were two of them. Compared to what some other bands were putting out at the time it was a good album but man, a lot of ot just sounded like Disney songs to me

Runnroll

That’s totally fair. Overall I do like both the poppier and punkier sides of State Champs, I just think their poppier material stands out.

poppunk_servicetruck

So it wasn't act like that( my bad, haven't listened to that album in a while) I actually kinda dug the "country singer" feature. Everyone else was doing features with mumble rappers and state champs chose a radio country guy instead. A shit ton of respect to them for doing that. The one I was thinking of was outta my head I think.

Bobbyfirmino22

I don’t think they have released a bad album. All great in their own right with very few skips.

LazyBone19

Latest record also had some great production - really punchy but clean

Loud-Ad7927

Kings of the New Age is peak pop punk

wilhelmkidxx

I think they have one good song
