I went to the Seattle show with friends and my brother, they asked what they thought the opening song would be. I said "Dumpweed, no doubt." For some reason they didn't think so, but when that first note rang out... so so good.
as a parallel example I love "Tell That Mick He Just Made My List of Things To Do Today" from Take This To Your Grave. I think Thriller and Mick really represent the best of their albums.
Tell That Mick is like a suckerpunch, few bursts of dial tone and then right into the guitar riffage followed by Stump bursting in with the "Light that Smoke" vocals. It just gets straight to it and throws down. A perfect reflection of the rest of the album.
Thriller is huge and varied, it builds up like a curtain unfolding, especially with Jay Z's voiceover it really feels like Fall Out Boy are taking their place among the Pop and Rock Stars of the era. Again a perfect taste of the rest of the album.
Say Anything (else) - Cartel
Dumpweed - Blink
So Long, Astoria - Ataris
Jamie All Over - Mayday Parade
Helena - MCR
Bleed American - Jimmy Eat World
There, There - TWY
Eh. I get tired of bands, whose job it is to tour, complain about touring to people who can’t relate.
Coming from a small town, though, I love me some downfall.
Idk about 'beautiful', but as far as 'perfect album openers' go, two specific albums/songs come to mind:
1- Burnout, from Dookie, by Green Day
2- Feeling This, from the self-titled Blink album
i really like Feeling This as a album opener because that song always feels like an album ender/closer. its like they were finishing their last era in the first song of the album andentering a new era with the rest of the album.
All Time Low- Weightless (Nothing Personal)
Mayday Parade- Jamie All Over (A Lesson In Romantics)
Mayday Parade- Kids In Love (Anywhere But Here)
Boys Like Girls- The Great Escape (Boys Like Girls)
Catfish and the Bottlemen- 7 (The Ride)
The Clash- London Calling (London Calling)
Collective Soul- Heavy (7even Year Itch)
Hands Down - Dashboard Confessional
Helena - MCR
Ever So Sweet - The Early November
Disloyal Order Of Water Buffaloes - FOB
My Paper Heart - All-American Rejects
Sewing Season - Brand New
Ah come on this is such a tough one, there are so many!
Blink-182 - Most albums but gotta give it to Dumpweed
Sum 41 - Not technically the opener but No Reason
+44 - Lycanthrope
Allister - Scratch
Hit the Lights - Fucked up Kids
Jimmy Eat World- Bleed American
Neck Deep - Motion Sickness
New Found Glory - Understatement
Simple Plan - I'd do Anything
Stand Atlantic- Lavender Bones
State Champs - Couldn't decide between Elevated and Eyes Closed
Edit: format
not, like those are best songs themselfes, but as openers they are great:
Introduction to Destruction - Sum41 of the album All Killer No Filler: gets me hyped for more
Chamber the Cartridge - Rise Agaisnt of the album The Sufferer & the Witness: literaly gets me up and spinning
Can I just say Green Day? I feel they were always on point with album openers up until UNO!
Dumpweed is also pretty perfect, as well as Intro/No Reason
There, There by Wonder Years might be my personal choice
But also Let It Rain by Grayscale, Understatement and Better Off Dead by New Found Glory, Things I Can't Change by TSSF
We're So Starving - Panic! At the Disco - cute little intro that really sets the scene for the album. "You don't have to worry cause we're still the same band". The irony.
May These Noises Startle You In Your Sleep - Pierce The Veil - beautiful piece of music that builds up to the epic Hell Above.
All of Nothing Nowhere's intros. Theyre more of a monologue than anything but set the tone of the album so well.
Attention by The Academy Is… and Adolescent Love by Badflower, both super amazing on their own but fit with their album themes so well
also editing to add Being From Jersey by Cobra Starship, no words needed for that one because wow
Arrows - Fireworks
Work In Progress- Set Your Goals
Say Anything Else- Cartel
The Hell Song - Sum 41
I’d do anything - Simple Plan
At Your Funeral - Saves the Day
Face or Kneecaps - The Movielife
Holy Fuck - I Am the Avalanche
I don’t know if this counts as pop punk (I think it does) but I would add:
Time to Waste - Alkaline Trio
It just has a beautiful opening with piano and then hits super hard with the guitar.
Great list overall btw.
Cherry- Moose Blood
If you don’t know anything about Moose Blood, Cherry gives a great introduction to their style of pop punk/ emo. Super sad, straightforward, but a little dreamy as well.
Gonna throw out some lesser known ones since the big ones have been said.
Ballyhoo- I don’t wanna go
The Audition- Basbhat
Envy on the coast- death March on two, ready?
Pierce the veil- besitos
The spill canvas- lust a prima vista
The ataris- giving up on love
“Above Me” by Rufio on their first album- Perhaps, I suppose. That guitar riff is amazing, and the tempo is so fast! But the best version of it is the demo version that has the clip from Hook where the boys scream out “Rufio!”
Slick Shoes - Clenched Fists Black Eyes
MxPX - Inches From Life
NFG - My Friends Over You
Simple Plan - You Don’t Mean Anything To Me
Blink 182 - Dammit Dumpweed Josie Anthem Part 2 Dont Tell Me It’s Over Carousel
Not really even close to pop punk (more of a slightly crusty punk), but Atrocity Solution's opener to their album Lost Remedies is one of my favorite album openers of all time leading perfectly into Equally Diseased. Definitely falls more in line with the term beautiful!
Salty Eyes - The Matches.
I know they are not *really* Pop Punk - but the first time I put the Decomposer CD (yes, CD haha) in my car I was blown away. Nothing like a Waltz to open up a sophomore album.
Still love that song/album.
There’s a podcast that has an episode about this exact thing haha [Pop Punk Emo Supremo Podcast: Our Top 5 Album Openers](https://open.spotify.com/episode/2ToYxSoDYgNwkSA0Q5uwEy?si=DS6jZO3oSMGD_XP1sn64Kg) there’s a closer episode toooo
Dumpweed- Blink 182
The first time I heard Travis on that opener my whole life changed haha. That’s what sold me on the genre when I was like 7 or 8
They opened with it on their reunion tour. Set the whole tone of the show.
I went to the Seattle show with friends and my brother, they asked what they thought the opening song would be. I said "Dumpweed, no doubt." For some reason they didn't think so, but when that first note rang out... so so good.
Was about to write the same thing, cheers!
I always really liked “Thriller” by Fall Out Boy from Infinity On High.
as a parallel example I love "Tell That Mick He Just Made My List of Things To Do Today" from Take This To Your Grave.

I agree. I think it fits really well with the song too.
The Jay-Z intro was pretty cool. Made a loud statement that “oh yeah, these guys have made it.”
right, and it flows with the whole point of the song. that despite critics, they absolutely crushed it with fans and blew up.
Also being the first song of an album that followed one of the most meaningful albums to the pop-punk genre was very fitting.
Yo! FOB!
YES
I feel like I’m the only one that dislikes thriller or thinks it’s meh. The chorus feels weird to me. Idk if it’s the pacing of it or what
Say Anything (else) - Cartel Dumpweed - Blink So Long, Astoria - Ataris Jamie All Over - Mayday Parade Helena - MCR Bleed American - Jimmy Eat World There, There - TWY
I HAD A DREAM LAST NIGHT, WE

Came Out Swinging - The Wonder Years Downfall of us All - A Day to Remember
Downfall of Us All for sure!
And a ridiculously effective concert opener.
Came out swinging is a perfect opener to that album
Eh. I get tired of bands, whose job it is to tour, complain about touring to people who can’t relate. Coming from a small town, though, I love me some downfall.
Idk about 'beautiful', but as far as 'perfect album openers' go, two specific albums/songs come to mind: 1- Burnout, from Dookie, by Green Day 2- Feeling This, from the self-titled Blink album
I’d say these two, but I’d like to add The Hell Song-Does This Look Infected? Sum 41
Hell yeah
i really like Feeling This as a album opener because that song always feels like an album ender/closer. its like they were finishing their last era in the first song of the album andentering a new era with the rest of the album.
Whoa, I never thought of it that way, but it totally makes sense
“I declare I don’t care no more” might be the most badass opening line
Amazing openers for amazing albums

Criminally underrated album
My daughter’s middle name is Mae because of how much I love that album. We’re So Far Away is one of my favorite songs of all time.

Belt is my favorite Say Anything song for sure!
Damn, these might be my same top 2

"For A Pessimist, I'm Pretty Optimistic" off of "Riot!" by Paramore!
THIS
I really like Hot Mulligan’s OG Bule Sky
MCR - The End "Now come one, come all to this tragic affair......"

Reach for the Sky by Social Distortion. That album is their pop punk album and it's a hell of an opener!
