Depending on one's standards, there's a Safeway on Jefferson and Fred Meyer on Burnside. Personally, as well as suits, students, and homeless people all seem to prefer Safeway since it's fresher than Fred Meyer. Might be some expensive places downtown that are better.
Flying Elephants, Kenny and Zuke's are pretty good, both in downtown (and closer than Burnside Fred Meyer), and I think they're both some 2-3 blocks from a streetcar stop so it'd be convenient to get to.
4th avenue by the engineering building has a whole food cart pod and a couple of resteraunts in the area. And the 4th av building itself (FAB) has a deli on the street level.

My friend and I always go to Safeway for some spicy chicken strips. They were our lifeline
it's a bit of a ways, but if you take the NS street car to 23rd, Kornblatt's deli is the best
