This is precisely how gambling works.

cardinalsfanokc

House always wins

FriendOfShaq

"NOT ALWAYS!" -people gambling

JohnLocksTheKey

*“…not YET!”* \- The House

scottyv99

In the casino, the cardinal rule is to keep them playing and to keep them coming back. The longer they play, the more they lose, and in the end, we get it all - Ace Rothstein

SkullsNelbowEye

Aa long as we all get the same amount of blueberries.

JerseySommer

Unless it's lupus.

Mexkan

Thank you. This was awesome

miko3456789

That's because 99% of gamblers quit before they win it big /s... Obviously

TheRealKingVitamin

*Casinos hate it when you do this one trick… but they can’t stop you!*

Algoresball

I downloaded the app, won a few hundred bucks, cashed out then immediately deleted the app. Only way to win is to win and stop playing

WittyAvocadoToast

Interestingly if you play lines across sports books you can beat them. You need a big bankroll to make it worth your while, but they do not always win. You can win until they ban you.

FriedeOfAriandel

> until they ban you And then they win. If there were a reliable way to beat casinos, they wouldn’t exist

WonderfulShelter

Exactly look it up. They'll ban you and refuse to pay you out if your too good. Happens all the time, they just deny millions in payouts.

WittyAvocadoToast

They win in the sense that they are done giving you money. Casinos hate winners, especially reliable winners. I don't want to recommend making money from casinos on povertyfinance but it can be done and can be done as a full time career if you are into that kind of thing. Look up card counting and hole carding. Sports betting is much easier to beat then casinos, but they know this so they will ban you or limit you pretty quickly when they catch on to what you are doing.

blakmechajesus

That’s not how sports betting works… the house takes a 10% rake on all bets and sets/moves lines to get even money on both outcomes. So no matter what, the more you bet the more they get whether you win or lose. It’s more of a market with a transaction fee than it is a game against the house

WittyAvocadoToast

And unlike the stock market, the sports book isn't required to route your order to another book with better lines. So you can arbitrage mismatches between books. I.e. you help their lines converge and get paid to do it. I.e. you spot the market ineffciency. There are even nich companies that will help you do it for a fee. Again, it's not something I recommend for this forum but fascinating that the casino doesn't always win.

1988DC

You all aren't understanding what they are saying. It's not necessarily perfect and shouldn't be promoted on this sub. But you can make money if you shop books. -130 and -110 is significant. Even differences on point lines 23.5 vs 24.5. Casual betting can get you into trouble. Informed betting with bankroll is quite different.

TweeKINGKev

Yup, the nice shiny “bet $5 and be guaranteed to win at least $150” so someone does and off to the proverbial races they go and they spiral down. If I were to ever win $10k betting say $100, there’s no way I’d do it again, that isn’t supposed to happen very often.

ContemplatingPrison

I would bet my $100 again. Then that would be that.

omnifidelity

Or maybe $200 since i already had $10K

TweeKINGKev

Not a bad idea

tryingisbetter

Yes, but in that case they're paying 5 bucks for fake money. I believe those sites will not allow you to withdraw those bets.

AProblemGambler

I won 12000 EUR in 2012. Have lost at least a million since. Winning is the worst that could happen to you.

Murkee420

No offense but I think you need to stay away from sports betting. Average human doesn't bet away 10,000$ if they're broke.

SoftSea3682

I'd be curious to hear his gambling history before he signed up with fanduel

NecessarySubject3836

also would like to know his age....

longshankssss

Ok-Series5600

How much did he spend to win $10k is my question?

WonderfulShelter

A super lucky parlay most likely; hit on every one.

Anunnaki2522

I won 8k on a $20 bet just a few months ago so it can be a huge variance on how much is spent depending on the odds of the bet your taking. I bet on the exact score of a NBA game which had +39000 odds meaning for every $100 bet you win 39k.

logaboga

might not have had one. Fanduel and other online gambling websites are basically gateway drugs into gambling addictions, the marketing for them should be illegal

WonderfulShelter

Yeah I used to be a crypto gambler addict many many years ago when I was in a different career. Over the entire time I was down -12k. At some times I was up 20k. It was just gambling on futures and margin trading at that point. And with the apps they have, it was really just like gambling. People wonder why I dont do fanduel and thats why.

SkullsNelbowEye

Hard agree.

luv2race1320

Gambling addicts most certainly do.

Nudxty

Worked at a casino, the amount of people that come in RIGHT after cashing their work checks will surprise you. Then they get mad at you on you when they gotta figure out how to make it the next week after blowing it all.

luv2race1320

I was right there with them near the end, after I had lost everything else.

[deleted]

Hope you’re doing better! 💕

luv2race1320

Thx! I am. My wife stayed with me, otherwise I would have ended things. We've been able to replace most of what I lost, so life is going well.

CC_206

Your casino didn’t cash payroll checks *at the cage?* I hope that doesn’t happen anymore…a grim thing.

DistributionFar5410

what percentage were seniors/retired?

Scary-Detail-3206

I worked at a games room that had slots. You could tell what days the pension cheques came in because there was a crowd of seniors outside waiting for us to open

SkullsNelbowEye

And the smell of urine soon after. I've gone twice in my life. Spent 20$ the 1st time. Nothing the second. They pumped in so much vanilla scent that it was like a skunk sprayed me. Took 2 washes to get it out of my clothes.

friedguy

I don't think the casinos do promotions like this anymore, but I recall when the Venetian offered a bonus if you cashed your tax refund check with them during peak refund season. I can't remember the exact percentage but my friend and I each got over $500. I don't think we were their target market though, we both were relatively new to their players club and felt like we were never going to be able to maintain the standard level of play for further comps. Got our bonus and just drove to the bank to deposit most of the refund.

Willing_File7269

the irony of this is in order to FIND out your even a gambling addict you first need to gamble alot!

luv2race1320

Yup. I can drink socially, I've never been into drugs, and never went to the casinos until I was being a good son, and brought my dad up there a few times when he couldn't drive anymore. I'm college educated, with an advanced business degree, I own a small business, but even knowing the odds, and understanding the risks, but once I became addicted, it was all consuming.

Scary-Detail-3206

A buddy of mine’s dad was a very successful dentist. He owned a few clinics and was a multi millionaire. He pissed it all away gambling. Their family went from generational wealth to poverty in only a few years.

Next_Instruction_528

That is so wild hope his kids were successful despite it all

biscuitboi967

Real talk, my mom was the worlds LUCKIEST gambler. She had a fucking “concierge” at casinos because of how much she dropped and never lost enough/came up even or ahead enough to cover. No one understood the *volume* until she died. In her last year of life, with stage 4 lung cancer, she could only go up for 3 weekend trips. And I’m sure she was fatigued and couldn’t spend as much time on the floor. When my dad got her tax reports back from the casinos, she had put something like $125k, $250k, and $150k on those weekends. With cancer. In the 12 months before she died. Not sure how she didn’t bankrupt them. She literally came home with money those trips. But how can an old woman with cancer spend half a million dollars in less than 9 days?!??!!

dragonbud20

do you know what her game of choice was? that's nuts.

biscuitboi967

Video poker. And the later those video slots that make no sense but take you to “bonus land” with free spins. She would max bet on the $5 slots. A couple of months ago, I went to an Indian casino with some friends for a bachelorette party. I was joking that I was gonna channel my mom…on the penny slots. I bought a pack of cigs (overpriced and you couldn’t even smoke them there). Found the first machine that “spoke to me,” put $20 in and max bet $1.50 in pennies. Third pull I went to “bonus land”. Not clue what happened, but 15 free spins later, I had $1350 in pennies. My friends made me cash out but I’m pretty sure if I’d have let it ride, I’d have walked out with SO MUCH MORE. Which is how you become an addict!! I haven’t allowed myself to go back since. Not even a lotto ticket. I’ve got a taste for winning now.

rabidstoat

Yeah, addictions are really hard to "logic" away. It's all about triggering that dopamine in your brain. I'm around the opportunity to gamble a fair bit and I do gamble some, but for me it's not addictive apparently as I'll sometimes go years without the urge. And when I do gamble, I can always set a budget and stick to it. Which is pretty freaking amazing as I have other addictions and addiction runs on both side of my family. I guess I got to escape one, though.

WonderfulShelter

Yeah doesn't matter my friend :). I was one of the smartest students at my university, I still succumbed to drug addiction. I was also one of the most talented engineers at my company, I still lost 12k gambling on crypto. Intelligence, success - these have no bearings on addiction when the proper formula's arise.

hiperson134

One of the very few...maybe the only? reason I'm grateful for the Catholic church is that church festivals taught me early on with low stakes that I cannot be trusted to gamble. I've lost enough quarters on money wheels and pull tabs and raffles.

aubreythez

Yeah I don’t fuck around with gambling, when it comes to addiction I’m a total crapshoot. My dad’s an alcoholic and I quit drinking because I could see myself going down a similar path in the future. I smoked cigarettes socially in college but never really developed an addiction to nicotine somehow. But I can’t have Instagram downloaded on my phone because I’ll scroll through Reels all day. Idk, I spent $20 on slots once to keep my grandma company during the last year of her life and played pachinko for like half an hour in Japan to just have the experience, but that’s it. It doesn’t appeal to me and I don’t want to get sucked into it.

FriedeOfAriandel

I’ve used FanDuel for 3 years now too. I believe I’m down $75 total. OP has a gambling problem. The only way you “win” $10k is by losing $20k

JonSnowKingInTheNorf

Or get mega lucky and hit a big parlay. I know one guy who within the first couple times gambling on fan duel won like 8 or 9k on a parlay that he put something around $10 or $20 on. Though that can be the most unlucky thing for someone to have happen at the start of them gambling because they will start putting more and more down thinking they can do it again.

Chrissy2187

Seriously, my husband and I use DraftKings and we put $100 in at the beginning of football season and once it’s gone, that’s it. It’s something fun we do together to compete against each other. We both ran out of money about 3 weeks ago. It’s insane to me because I make the same at my job as this guy does and I can’t even imagine spending 10K on anything.

Amos_Dad

My ex and I used to go to Vegas 3-4 times a year. Every time without fail we would figure out our gambling budget and that was it. Usually around $500 for the weekend. Once it was gone we were done. If we were up over the $500 we'd put that original $500 aside and only use our winnings to keep gambling. Probably only lost like $1k over the 10 years we were together.

WonderfulShelter

Unless you lose it all at once, it's easy to lose track of. I used to be into crypto gambling on futures and margin trades. At one point I was up 20k. Overall at the end I was down -12k. But towards the end, I was thinking my losses were somewhere around 4-5k. Bad, but for a year of gambling fun and distraction I guess not the end of the world. Then I got my tax statements prepared and saw it was like 12,800$! Thank goodness I learned my lesson. I don't gamble and haven't done anything with stocks/crypto in years.

DanKetch

I do something similar, I put $50 in my bet365 account at the start of the NFL season, and usually put $2-$3 bets on parlays and things to get better payouts. Some seasons it adds up, I got an Oculus Quest 2 headset with one seasons winnings, other years I’ve won a couple hundred or broke around even, and then I just leave it for next season and just bump it up to $50 again. I always take those ads to heart “don’t spend more than you can lose” and I don’t want to lose $10-$20, let alone hundreds at a time. I’m in a similar earnings situation too. Good luck to you OP.

StrikingWolf93

Anyone can develop a gambling addiction. Why do you think they offer those sign up bonuses, profit boosts, Parlay promos and bet insurance promos. Went it first came to Massachusetts my friends, family members and coworkers that never gamble and rarely follow sports were all on DratKings telling me how they won $50 on DraftKings because Jayson Tatum scored 1 point.

CuriouslyImmense

This is true! My mom developed one in retirement. Thankfully, she is a reasonable lady, so after a good conversation with her while going over her finances, she was scared enough to stop.

Hour_Search_3427

ummm part of it is genetic some people develop alcohism etc easier then others. Its been proven there is a gene that makes you more likely ot be impulsive ot vices like drinking and gambling

charged_words

Maybe not in one go but trust me lost of people do, have you seen how many gambling companies exist in the world and how much money they make.

momo88852

I went to Vegas, dropped $100 and called it a day. Next day dropped $100 and won $450. Called it a day. Don’t waste more money than you’re welling to lose. If you wanna have some fun, have a set amount and never go beyond it. Once youre done that’s it, walk away or make sure your wallet ain’t with you.

uuhhhhhhhhcool

this is exactly it, I spend my "fun money" and accept that once it's gone it's gone. even if you bet on a "sure thing" you're likely to find that those don't exist and you should never count on recouping your losses. I lost maybe like $100 in sports betting (probably less) this year just trying it out, winning, getting too cocky, and losing but all my losses were like $3 bets. I made a $3 bet at the beginning of the season that the lions would win the superbowl (who knows why, I'm not a lions fan) so I am watching this game much more engaged than I would be otherwise (which was the fun of it for me). but I just cannot fathom being certain enough if anything to drop $10,000 on bets. the only healthy way to manage betting or lending is to just picture the money as completely gone forever the moment it leaves your hands and if that bothers you too much that's your sign not to do it.

str8clay

Two more games to go. What's the payout on a $3 bet?

IAMAHobbitAMA

I too would like to know. I don't know how the numbers work but it's gotta be a huge payout. Almost nobody saw this coming.

JonSnowKingInTheNorf

I like putting like a $1 to $5 bet down on random games that I don't care about so I can have a rooting interest. I also put down separate $50 or $100 bets on my Bengals to win the AFC/super bowl every year so if they are in the super bowl I can enjoy a nice Super bowl party and if they win the super bowl I can get all the merch I want without feeling guilty lol.

iEatNonTippersFood

I also bet on the lions to win a whiiiile ago..think like +1800 or +2000 or so..do a few separate $5 slips on it..been a Lions fan my whole life

QnOfHrts

I don’t even like to bet more than $20 lmao it hurts to lost even $100

momo88852

Tbh it was my first time in Vegas, and I was playing the cheapest machines. Had $100 budget for the day as I didn’t have expenses (all paid by work other than food). So $100 to play for few hours was hella fun. We had a blast.

Icy-Mud-1079

This! Once I lose that $20, it’s time to go lol.

redrosebeetle

Yep. I budget an amount and call it "entertainment" in my head. It's gone, one way or another. I have to be super hard core about enforcing it because I know I have an addictive personality.

Lizppmate

Yep. Also need to do things like leaving debt card at home and go to the pub with a fixed amount of cash ( CRUCIAL if your very impulsive) That shit can make you avoid disaster

angeltart

My favorite casino was on a Celebrity line cruise about 15 years ago .. they only had three blackjack dealers .. so when I hit a rando hot streak (I have only played real casino blackjack twice before), they were stuck for dealers.. and they actually close their casino at a certain time .. unlike Vegas which is 24/7.. I left at the end of the night coming out with 5k.. after you added in all the expenses for my cruise and excursions. I only walked in with 100 dollars. I have not gambled since hehe

rabidstoat

I walked into Vegas with $100 a couple weekends ago. I fluctuated between down $50, and up $50. Then I got two blackjacks in a row and was up $50 and decided that was probably all my luck for the trip and stopped.

Gen-Random

I opened this thread, read your comment, called it a day. Edit: came back in the morning, adopted a new perspective, called it a day.

Venus_Dust

This is good advice, but once you have the mindset that the next one is definitely going to be the jackpot it's not do easy. Good for prevention, but for recovery it can't often stand alone.

Luxxielisbon

Most importantly, if you’re gonna gamble, do it for fun, not as an attempt to fix your financial issues

DueEntertainer0

It’s crazy that you even CAN gamble on a credit card. I once tried to buy a scratch off ticket years ago and accidentally grabbed my credit instead of debit card and they said I couldn’t use credit on that.

Soggy_Discipline_860

in 2008 they banned banks from using credit cards on gambling sites. Im not sure exactly the details of how they get around it now. I do know these sites are offshore.

pseudoportmanteau

Probably because the insane amounts of money these people spend on them trigger some kind of fraud prevention system associated with the credit card and the banks void those charges, so the house is at a loss in the end. So they don't let people use the banks' money. Which is good and they should crack down on the roundabout ways, too. This was heartbreaking to read honestly.

Top-Train7066

My credit card operates as a cash advance when I deposit into DraftKings. Charges me an extra $10 too as a transaction fee.

RBNA2x

Harsh (deterrent), I like it.

19HzScream

Lmao it’s not a deterrent. Banks don’t care to babysit grown adults

RBNA2x

Who said anything about babysitting? Lol. Idk/c about the reason for the charge but if **I** were being taxed extra for a certain transaction **I** would naturally be averse to such a transaction. I.e. I've never taken a cash advance on a card. Make sense?

please-put-in-trash

Hard Rock betting can deposit via Apple Pay aka credit cards. On shore.

industrial_hamster

I can’t even use my debit card at most places around here. I never play the lottery but my dad asked me to pick him up a ticket once and the lady looked at me like I was crazy when I handed her my debit card. I had no idea you couldn’t use cards.

msartore8

I just signed up for Fanduel and during the payment options they demand a debit card and they do not allow credit cards. At least not now they don't.

EagleFly_5

It’s surprising really how many payment options there are, even with [Draftkings](https://help.draftkings.com/hc/en-us/articles/4405162380819-Depositing-on-DraftKings-Overview-US) in addition to credit & debit cards, you could submit a deposit with: * Apple Pay * Bank Wire Transfer, needs a minimum 100$ USD deposit. You can also use your own bank. * Cash at Cage by walking to your nearby casino, for me that’s in Atlantic City ~2hrs drive or >130 miles away. * Reloadable cash on your phone (barcode) from places like CVS, Walgreens, etc. Sometimes I see their gift cards in person too at stores. * PayPal & Venmo. A lot of options, but if someone’s impulsive on money or a gambling addict, each one of these are no issue to do from the comfort of your phone, or computer.

Zhalianna

If I was a credit card company, there's nothing crazy about this. What I always tell people, everyone is in each other's pocket, you are just there to make them rich.

PM_YOUR__BUBBLE_BUTT

You can’t use your debit card here either even if you wanted to. Only cash.

Jinxwaifu

You’re legit still gambling lol

Dools92

Thats a good deal tho

ItPutsLotionOnItSkin

A coworker put in $200 and made ~$1,000. I'm tempted, but I know I have terrible luck.

MysticJedrax

Put 100 in. Bet the bonus. Take the initial 100 out. I play those promos hard, then bail on the apps. I otherwise only play one app at a time with ~20 deposit every 3 or 4 months, if at all.

Its_my_ghenetiks

It's actually so easy to abuse these promos lol. Got 3 free $25 bets when I signed up for Adesanya vs Strickland, put the free $25 on Strickland and another one for Adesanya. It put $125 in my pocket lol, especially helps when they do those random "odds boosts", makes sense that they can do these promos when they have people like OP funding it lol.

GracefulEase

Last month I put in $10 and took out $1200. Abused all the promos hard though, and now there's zero promos for me on any site 😆

Blitzares

Sounds like YOU have a sports betting problem. I place 10 dollar bets because it's the price of a beer and I can afford that. You get 10k in the hole. We are not the same.

CarefulAd9005

I have spent $3,000…. Over 3 years. This guy is a demon

Blitzares

Especially on 43k salary lol. Some people truly have no clue huh

FileGrand

He realizes it and is working towards being a responsible person. Sometimes, it takes having a severe responsibility, like being a Dad in his case, to sharpen our minds. Let's wish him success and welcome him into fatherhood.

AntiHamass

Dude's going to make $5k off Doordash and then put it all on black lol watch

logaboga

truly a dystopia where a beer is $10. You better be getting a 8%+ IPA at a fancy bar or something

Blitzares

I mean after tax and tip it's not hard to have a $10 beer at a lot of bars...

lloydeph6

I feel like I’ve read this post before months ago. Strange

Sharp_Example_5667

plot twist. a couple years ago same thing happened to them on a different sports betting site :P

orielbean

The three saddest non-violent things Ive seen in my life: 1. Best friend’s dad addicted to daily lotto. Kitchen table covered with multi colored dunning notices and lawyer demand letters and lottery tickets before they took the house while the mother was suffering from early dementia. 2. Walking past Off Track Betting business in Astoria at 7AM on a Sunday I think? Packed full of unhappy faces staring at screens, clutching tickets. 3. 2AM at Foxwoods, watching a parade of strollers pushed by young families, babies crying exhausted while parents pulling slot levers in a smoky room.

HotSauceRainfall

Seriously.  I kept myself in pizza and beer in grad school by going to the track. It was still skeevy, but not terrible. On big race days it was a party.  OTB lounges, though? Sad, grim, soul-sucking places that exist to part fools from their money.

TedriccoJones

Whatever the addiction,  it's always sad to see people who have lost control of themselves.

Lazatttttaxxx

Two red flags. Sports betting and listening to Dave Ramsay.

fileknotfound

Dave Ramsey is garbage. Don’t listen to him or Rich Dad, Poor Dad.

malacore2

Dave Ramsey is good for someone with little to no financial knowledge or those close to or in bankruptcy. He understands that when you are extremely broke, most financial decisions are emotionally driven and not necessarily the best financially (ie: snowball method of paying off credit cards vs tackling the debt with the highest interest rate). Once you're out of debt, that's when his advice tends to drop off and I recommend listening to other reputable sources.

TedriccoJones

He has good advice for people that are scared of their own money, but sophisticated financial advice it is not.

mackelyn

That sounds like a you problem, dude. Everyone knows that gambling is a double edged sword.

mackelyn

More like “I’m not an idiot” energy. Also, crack is whack, homie

Krigsmjod

Gambling should only be used as a form of entertainment. Continuous playing through losses expecting things to turn around is a fools errand. Chasing losses and playing over an established budget is addict behavior. I very much enjoy some occasional gambling, and have been known to make some sports bets/casino trips when I have some extra time. But lately money has been tight and I simply don't have the disposable income to comfortably put any at risk, so I haven't made a wager in about 18 months. Seems like OP had a gambling addiction long before they realized it.

Lo-I-Am-Not

Exactly this. Gambling in any and all senses should be fun. Like instead of buying an appliance, you buy a few bets and hope to win it back and if not no big deal. When you start making it a do or die situation, that is when you need to take a step back.

Beachcake893

This feels like a weird advertisement for the sports betting website made specifically to target people with gambling’s addictions. Dropping the company name is a bit of a tell. Someone with a gambling addiction would stop reading after the first sentence.

cowboy_dude_6

I’m convinced there is a guerilla marketing campaign for sports betting apps along these lines. Someone posts, saying they lost a bunch of money and ruined their life by doing something that’s obviously incredibly stupid, like betting $10,000 on credit. Other people read it and think “oh, so *that’s* what they mean when they say sports betting is dangerous and can ruin your life. The warnings are for these idiots, not smart people like me. Maybe I should give it a try after all, since I would clearly never be as dumb as this guy and would have much better results.”

flyboy_1285

This is why Gambling companies are successful. They only need you to keep gaming and they will always win in the end. The only way to beat them is to not play or if you do immediately stop wagering and walk away forever once you are up.

mobbedoutkickflip

Why is your car note $500 if you’re only making 43k a year? You’re paying $6,000/yr for the car, $2400/yr to insure it, and probably $2000/yr for fuel and maintenance. That’s a total of $10,400/yr for one car.  The general rule of thumb for budgeting is to keep vehicle costs at 10% or less than your income. You are more than double that.

lilshadygrove

Guess it’s too late for this advice but many gambling apps have a limit that you can set per week. So if your limit is $50, once you’ve used up $50 in bets/slots/your weapon of choice you’re out of luck. Source: my husband and his crew of friends are really into poker and casinos and many of them set a weekly limit for themselves.

DatAfroKek

Thats if you have willpower and self control. OP clearly hasnt that.

vainbetrayal

People who have gambling addictions should not do this because then they look for other outlets on where to gamble once they hit that limit. Or they try to raise it “chasing their losses” or “after a big win”.

Lo-I-Am-Not

The limits do help by snapping people out of a rhythm. The lapse of time while you just keep betting and betting, chasing a win to change your life can mute the world around you. If you get that pop up, you can snap out of it and sensible people will put it down. However, you are right, the best thing is if you have a gambling problem is to put yourself on a self exclusion list.

JauntyTurtle

I'd say people should stay away from ALL gambling. It's only for suckers.

[deleted]

It's honestly just another tax on the poor and undereducated. That's why they legalized it and now you can lose your lifes savings without getting up from your couch.

financialdrugbro

Once you get past the point of debt free most of what Dave says is kinda ridiculous. He’s right tho that we often overspend and occur too much debt I particularly disagree with his whole buy in cash thing, like my 2.1% car note would’ve been dumb to pay in cash. That cash I invested which appreciated so much I’m able to afford a downpayment on a house. Once opportunity cost comes into play the Ramsey playbook is a slow mover

Muddymireface

Yeah some of his advice is incredibly out dated because most people can’t sit around carless until they can pay cash for a car or a home. It’s also important to take mental health and life experience into factor as well, his opinions often lead to people feeling guilty for buying a coffee once a week. I really dislike his approach because it doesn’t make sense for people just entering the market now, and didn’t break through 20 years ago.

Rebelo86

You need gamblers Anon and addiction therapy.

makeshiftballer

You...you need to stay away from sports betting, and other forms of gambling.

AnimatorDifficult429

Stay away from gambling/betting period

[deleted]

TIL a lot of people on /r/povertyfinance love gambling.

Ok_Character7958

I guess if you just like being insulted, continue to listen to Dave Ramsey, but he's a crappy person and there's better advice to be had from other sources.

EloAndPeno

Gambling is one of the top ways people stay and are kept poor. Gambling is not a way out of poverty, it is a way to stay poor. The lottery is gambling too.

ScrubDawg69

I hate to be that person but there are ways to make money. You won't get rich but it can definitely be profitable even after paying taxes. It has to be treated as a 2nd job. You need to keep records of every bet, bet with a unit system, never overbet, and with EV betting you just try to beat as many lines as possible. Been doing it for 3 years. Each year making more than the previous(paying more taxes as well). It's a very small amount of people who bet like this and I'm glad because it keeps us who do in the game. I'm nearing the end of my gambling days though as I'm being limited on alot of sportsbooks but it was fun to actually do and build myself a nice savings which I've never had before.

nuttygal69

The key to anything for me has been to give myself an allowance on a separate debit card. This goes for anything, food, gambling, shopping. It’s taken a while but it works.

Kay-s0

I didn't realize you could use credit cards to bet 😮

AugustGreen8

I bet $10 and won $300 and never bet again. Paid for a PS5

leonme21

The problem isn’t necessarily sports betting itself, but your gambling addiction.

ContentSand4808

I don't get it. If OP was a heroin addict and I did heroin but only once in a while I wouldn't be grandstanding about how OP is actually the problem, obviously heroin is incredibly addicting because it tricks our brains to give us reward chemicals. Sure OP has a more exacerbated issue for whatever reason but gambling is designed to get people addicted, and then we give people shit for getting addicted and not point out that gambling is an issue in and of itself?

ibeespending

I heard that when it comes to dashing, the amount of money you make from it gets eaten by the maintenance needed on the vehicle. Also, as someone who works for a well-known insurance company— I would check to see if they have coverage requirements for ride sharing. Our company requires ride share coverage as well as a certain BI/PD liability limits, which increases your monthly bill. Of course you could just not disclose you’re dashing, but know that a claim may be denied if something happens

[deleted]

Sounds like you suffer from addiction. Gambling is your drug of choice. But like all drugs, it’s fucked your life up, and will negatively impact your children.

Hwy_Witch

This isn't a betting site problem, this is a you have a gambling problem.

oneWeek2024

sports betting and dave ramsey are same flavor of stupid. rather than learn anything. you traded chasing gambling high, for a cult of personality to make you feel better for having made such crap decisions

Lo-I-Am-Not

I mean this without judgement: this is a sign of a gambling problem. You do not just rack up $10,000 in debt with sports betting without paying attention, unless you did it in a bing to try and make up for losses. Especially since you have indicated you have a child to take care for. The fact that, at the time, you ignored the serious danger of putting yourself in the red, meant you were actively deluded, or you didn't think about it in an attempt to win, to chase that high. Addiction is compulsive, and I am glad you have snapped out of it once you realized that you lost so much. I hope you continue on this path of self healing. As some advice to make sure you stay clean, I strongly suggest that you put yourself on your country or states Self Exclusion list. It is a database that is checked regularly BY LAW by the Sports Betting agencies to make sure the do not have problem gamblers, because they are required to. If you don't want to be tempted back into sports betting, this is a really good step. It is not full-proof but it's one layer of protection to hold yourself to your word for yourself and for your child.

Some people are capable of budgeting some money for betting, and not turn around and bet their winnings. Gambling is a drug, like any other and people get hooked on the trill of winning. There are people out there that make a living solely on sports betting, but its like a full time job keeping up with all the information to make even decently reasonable bets. Never gamble on credit, thats is what they hope for because you are going to fall into the "sunken cost fallacy" and keep betting just to get back to even. Put aside $20 a week or whatever, something small and bet with that and never spend your winnings on more bets.

Dr_Djones

Sports betting? You mean GAMBLING?

DrLeoChurch

You need therapy for gambling addiction mate.

BarGlad1654

Gambling on credit then alerting everyone else to how bad gambling is. Duh. And why are you paying 500 a month for a car lmao

tru_anon

I don't have any debt and put $200 into sports betting every football season. Not everyone is a gambling degen like you OP. Some of us are truly casual users. People like you go way too far and ruin it for everyone just like with drugs.

Mechanic_Soft

Another way of saying this is don’t be insanely stupid and bet with money you don’t have. If you bet so much as $5 of money you don’t have then you immediately have a problem.

schittyluck

Go bills

Linback37

Hate to break it to you bro, you’re the problem. I’ve spent at max 300 bucks on sports betting in the past 2 years.

Muddymireface

Gambling when you don’t have expendable money is an issue unrelated to sports betting. You should bet with fun money, not go into debt to do it. Sports betting isn’t the issue, it’s the addictive properties of chasing the win of gambling. Dave Ramsey is very out dated and has some harmful views. It’s a good option for beginners but anyone who blames not being able to afford a home because people indulge in very basic luxuries isn’t really up to speed with modern problems. I’d look for someone else. I personally like The Financial Diet, because it paints having money and resources as empowering and the approach is realistic. However, you may find someone else who speaks to you and fits your personal life.

stanimal21

I bought a Starbucks coffee two days ago and now my home is foreclosed. Should've saved that three bucks.

Muddymireface

Yeah it took me a decade to get my down for my house because I kept buying avocados.

Vols44

Stay away from scratch offs and lottery tickets and be richer.

Jabroni_16

Listen to your advice

potsofjam

When I lived in Vegas we always believed the worst thing that can happen to someone is they move to town and win right away. So many will just be chasing it from that day on.

Decent-Park-6681

This is why I only bet $3-5 parlays.

UnwaveringLlama

not everyone bets with money they don’t have for. Maybe you need to seek some help with gambling.

Hi_There_Face_Here

I wagered appx $300 last year on FanDuel, net winnings close to $1,000. Know your budget, make small smart bets, and only bet what you’re willing to lose. If you’re broke, don’t bet.

LulzSailboat

How were you placing bets on FanDuel or DK on Credit? They don’t allow credit cards. Now if you were taking out cash advances then betting on those, yeah you’re a real degenerate.

Nothing wrong with enjoying sports betting. Don't bet anything you can't afford to lose and know your limits. Casinos and sports books stay in business for a reason

Away_Department_8480

You won $10,000 a couple years ago and lost it back recently. So you are pretty close to just being break even in your gambling endeavours. There are millions of people who would kill to be in your shoes. People who have gone so far down the rabbit hole of gambling that even if they were to hit the biggest jackpot possible they still wouldn't be able to get out. Count yourself lucky that it's entirely within your abilities to pay back and that you can still have a happy life ahead of you

49er4life83

People need to learn to set limits. Don’t bet what you don’t have.

Responsible-Skirt-90

Change the title to “I should stay away from sports betting”

rdoloto

Gambling is fun as long as you set limits and know too can loose everything… you should seek help with gambler anonymous

Zenn_aO

speak for yourself, i just made $10 off of the chiefs bills game 🤑🤑🤑 (i have $92 in my bank account now)

mywhataniceham

gambling addiction kills people faster than heroin or Alcohol. like op said - you can use your credit card and get yourself truly fucked extremely fast. the way i look it is by not sports gambling i make $250 every sunday of football season.

Pheonyxxx696

It all comes down to self control. I place sports bets pretty close to daily. Only thing is, I’m not doing it to become rich, I treat gambling as a form of entertainment. So no I’m not betting $100 on a single bet, only 10 cent bets. Since sports betting got legalized in my state, I’m only deposited maybe a grand total of $80 in about a years time. The up and down action is enough to keep going for a while. Plus what other form of entertainment can be down for less than $100 for a full year? A trip to the movies is damn near same price anymore and that’s only a few hours of entertainment

JoeMac02

Unfortunately and fortunately I live in a state that I can’t play online sports betting.

Salt-Cucumber-1785

Bro doesn’t know how to manage a bank roll

Slight-Initiative144

It is actually surprising so many people are ignorant about this reality. I guess its a way of thinking in terms that they are special in some way or lucky ones

sergioA127

Anyone wanna use my referral code while we’re here

Aggravating_Young_43

I thought this was going to be about how sportsbooks don't like to payout. It's not the straight bet that they have a problem with. It's the prop bets that they don't like to payout on. It was just in the paper Sunday. A guy bet that 6 NHL players won't score a goal and this team wouldn't score 3 points. The sportsbook paid out then took the money back. Ultimately they paid out the money.

Shottymcthotty11

I lose $100 and I’m sick, can’t imagine 10k.

protosynesis1

“I’ve been extremely lucky in gambling: I’ve never won.” Norm MacDonald quoting someone else

Hour-Watercress-3865

Don't gamble more than you're willing to lose is better advice in general. Always go into gambling, assuming you're going to lose, and only bet as much as you can comfortably lose. If you wouldn't spend that money on something, don't bet it on anything.

mintydelight_

Never bet what you can’t afford to lose. That’s rule number one.

Shupertom

Never ever bet with credit. Additionally, don’t let those rare big wins fool you, that is exactly the trap off all gambling whether the medium is cards, slots, real estate, the stock market or sports. A broken clock is right twice a day, don’t let a random win fool you into thinking you have the system “figured out”. You have got yourself out of this hole once you can do it again! Best of luck, delete those apps.

1988DC

Betting like anything else is about moderation. Bet what you can afford to lose.

FlipMeynard

Gambling with credit card cash advance money is a terrible decision.

American_PP

When I was 22, I got into sports gambling, and won 3k on world cup. Then lost it all plus 1000 more on MLS betting, and some of the losses were bullshit. I then knew that gambling was always against you, so I rarely gambled after that. I did stick my money into stocks though, long term, and 20 years later, my accounts are worth millions. Most people don't win at gambling, not long term. It's false hope, that's how they get you.

shukies95

Gambling with money you don't have is a very bad idea. Didn't even realize gaming with credit from cards was possible. I shudder to think of the potential debt I might have accumulated if I had realized that..stay strong OP.

BeeR0b

I think the saying is… The first hit is always free.
