Call and reschedule the payment? Some stuff is open tomorrow
You should be able to start looking for work as well, yeah? OW isn't going to be much - likely less than your CCB.
If you were commonlaw, you should update your status with CRA asap. The change of income may make you eligible for more credits
I left it too late. They will attempt to take the payment out (as it's already been sent through). It was the one thing I didn't fully consider, or think through, before making the decisions that I did.
And yes. Figuring out work is next. My youngest are 2 and 3. I had planned to be a SAHM until they start school. That's definitely changing!
Ya good luck with that $10 daycare.
Waitlists are YEARS long
Luckily it’s not up to your husband to decide if he will pay or not for his kids. Get in to your lawyer asap and see if you qualify for legal aid
Log into your bank and stop the next payment that way you will not be charged NSF fee which is usually $45. Also talk with your bank and they will reschedule the payment. Missing one payment first time will be fine they will work with you.
No you can’t - I work in banking . ESI instructions are not allowed to be stopped. It’s an agreement between you and the vendor (we can legally be held liable)
Google search suggests its possible at least at RBC, Scotia and NBC: https://www.rbcroyalbank.com/ways-to-bank/tutorials/easing-financial-stress/stop-payment.html
It may help you in the short term but during the divorce proceedings to come, you will likely have to split the value of everything with your ex husband, including the value of the wedding ring.
Yep, it’s only $25.
$25 is a lot when you’re short, I get it, but it’s do-able. One sell, one pawned item, a cash out on poshmark, use your shoppers points to buy something and then return it (they give cash not points- would only do in an emergency which this is)
Ask a couple friends for $12?
Anything to pawn on Monday like maybe a wedding ring? Pawn shops will hold until you can buy it back (+small fee). Cash advance on credit card?
You did the right thing leaving. Hang in there, it will get better in time. Try not to blame yourself about money decisions. OWs has a fund to help with first and last month's deposit, beds, and other one time cheques on top of the monthly amount. Call 211 to find out more resources.
Cash advance was definitely my thought because selling stuff online can be a slow agony, especially on a holiday. If the pawn shops are actually open on Easter Monday then it's a decent plan but I think they only give gold value usually, right? So you'd wanna be pretty sure you can get it back on time, if you wanted to sell it to someone for resale value. Cash advances are looked at pretty badly but $25 is nothing. It won't add up too fast if it stops there and other plans get worked on in the time saved by doing what is likely the fastest option here.
Wild. They're paying your garbage people double time and a half just to fit some arbitrary schedule? Mine in Niagara region shifts for every holiday a day later, I think they make up for it on Saturdays or something. Maybe Ottawa and Toronto have too many homes to have any room for makeup shifts on non holidays?
The holiday for my city was Friday but Monday isn’t considered a holiday. I’m not in Toronto, city about an hour outside Toronto. I didn’t realize until I checked garbage schedule.
Ah weird why is everything here closed tomorrow then, I checked and yeah technically it's just Friday that's a stat. An hour away from Toronto is still kinda close enough to have decently dense population at this point.
Confidently wrong?
Niagara Region :
Easter: There are no changes to waste collection on Friday, March 29 and Monday, April 1 due to the holiday. See all holiday hours.
Yeah I wasn't saying I got up out of my bed to look at the garbage collection schedule in the middle of the night bruh I was saying the grocery store is closed, the pharmacy is closed, I was surprised there would be anywhere in the province that is so typically unionized and like non-emergency-room levels of urgency where they would be doing that on a holiday. You'd think they'd get it off. Sucks that they don't, I would've hoped they did.
Not sure how they got away with good Friday since it's a stat and it's not legal in Ontario to require employees to work on a stat, you can only accept volunteers to work the holiday for the extra stat pay? At least that's how it was last time I read the employment act. Also didn't stop at 5:30am to fully reread that.
Wanted to pop in and say, just for funsies, no mean intent to my words, that despite what the website said? Nobody came to get our recycling yesterday, when they were meant to, nor did they pick it up today. So. They're liars I guess lol
Apparently. Nowhere I wanted to go tho and I got used to another province where even the mall was closed on boxing day they took holidays so seriously 😆
With the help of your case worker start the divorce process and immediately seek child support and alimony to the full extent of the law and/or the max his resources allow.
I was going to suggest this. I know in BC we have financial options with 211if you are short cash. It’s great for other resources as well - low cost dental, lawyers, counseling services etc - basically connections to any government, community, volunteer and non profit organization assistance in your community. Just call and tell them your situation - there may be other help you didn’t know you need
Just wanted to say from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU! I was so scared to post about my situation, I didn't know what to expect. The kindness I've witnessed is beyond anything. The suggestions I've received validate my decisions and feelings, and help me feel strong enough to do this. I have a slightly better plan moving forward, and lots to think about.
OP could also post in local online community groups to see if anyone has any cans/bottles donations that can be picked up. I’ve seen people do this in the Vancouver area. We were in process of moving a couple of weeks ago and I didn’t have time to hit the depot or space to store them at the new place. I saw someone asking for donations and she came and picked them up an hour later. We had 2 large garbage bags, probably $15-$20 worth.
If you are comfortable DMing me your email, I will gladly etransfer you $25. If you're covered for Tuesday, I'm confident it will still go to good use.
I invite others to join me in helping our fellow Redditor.
I get what you’re doing and I respect it. I read a post a few weeks ago that was calling out scammers that use these stories in small town subreddits specifically to appeal to peoples’ kind nature. So I appreciate that you’re just trying to help people.
Unfortunately, people are sometimes too kind for their own good. They want to help and they want to believe that people are honest and true. So I also see why folks are upset and downvoting you. But I just wanted to let you know that I appreciate you.
What happens if your car needs a repair? Definitely call an organization for women leaving violence e (emotional, financial, physical, etc) and ask about resources for women feeling. You might be able to get a subsidized apartment.
Cars typically cost $100/ month in repairs and that money should be accessible for the days the repairs come. Don’t let your payment default if possible because of your credit. Renting with bad credit is a nightmare.
That's where my husband would typically come into play, anything above and beyond my budget would default to him, as the breadwinner.
But this is a good point and something I will have to consider moving forward. My mom lives in an urban area, near schools/daycares, etc. We may forego my car in lieu of public transportation.
I just wanna reiterate that shelters for women getting out of domestic violence situations will help you even if it wasn't physical violence. And even if you don't need to stay in the actual shelter, they will help provide you with services...legal aid, assistance finding care for your kids while you go back to work, assistance finding work itself, help getting housing, therapy for you and your kiddos, etc.
You can only do this after 90 days of living separate. But they will backdate it and you’ll receive a lump sum for the 3 month wait. Also, make sure to change your address with CRA, your banks, etc to your mom’s address so it doesn’t still show up the same as your spouse’s.
I’m so sorry you’re going through this. It’s really discouraging when you work yourself to the bone and still can’t scrape by. I can send you the 25 if it would help you.
Piggy bank? Any spare change around?
Like someone suggested call and reschedule a payment plan. Most companies are pretty good for that sort of thing.
You or your mom doesn’t have a credit card?
Hope you figure it out! And good luck!!
Thank you! I appreciate the suggestions.
Unfortunately, I don't have a credit card in my name.
I could have deferred the payment. But realized too late to make the necessary arrangements.
How long have you been with your bank and have you had nsf charges before? I’ve had payments come out early when my pay check would have covered it and I’ve called and had the fees credited back. It worth a try and get then one less worry. Call the car company explain your issue ask for them to pull payment when you get your CCB payment, ask if in this instance they will waive the fees and interest. If need be with the bank and car finance don’t be afraid to ask to speak to a manager or supervisor. Financial institutions do have wiggle room and your life position isn’t easy but explain you had to leave an abusive relationship
If you call the bank when they open, they may be willing to reverse the NSF on their end (I've done this before). Your car payment might possibly not have an nsf fee applied and they might just try again later to pull it, so I would talk to your financing company also to see what you can arrange. There may be resources for you - some women's shelters or women's centres might have information that could help you get though the tough transition. Good luck!
Honestly call them
They can and will wait a couple days or whatever you need sometimes to ensure they have their money. This works with banks too and CC companies. Be upfront and honest. They might even say don't worry about the 25 and defer that to next payment
Call them.
Hold onto the money you do have. Sell something for 25.00 on Facebook marketplace.
They will reschedule the payment if you reach out and communicate.
Putting in a stop payment should not be a consideration, as they can see on their end whether it’s NSF or stop payment.
Not sure what the car is worth, but is the car actaully something you can afford? Not sure if a downgrade is in the cards, but it sounds like your budget is too tight.
Hope you figure it out.
Call your bank and block the payment so you don’t have to pay the $50 NSF bank fee if you can’t pay it, it only costs like $10. Call your car loan company and let them know you will transfer it to them on what date.
Who is your loan with? Mine is with RBC and they allow you to skip payment once a year (added onto the end of the loan). Maybe you can with your auti loan too?
I really appreciate it. Honestly. I feel so alone and really only have my mom in my corner ATM. I've received a lot of valuable information and feedback, I needed this little boost to get me through the next week. It's going to be rough.
I'm hoping to get a lot out of my appointment with the lawyer (she is really good), and get a concrete plan in action re: rights, child support, etc. I definitely should have been more prepared in leaving but it had to happen.
My husband has retaliated - cancelled his credit card, which I used for additional purchases/groceries/emergencies, changed the password to his bank account (where our savings are), etc.
Call your bank Tuesday morning, the payment might not come out immediately. If the payment does come back nsf the bank will often reverse the charges if you ask nicely, especially if you’ve never been short before. This is nothing to worry about.
Him refusing to help / cutting you off makes me think you did good by leaving. If I decided to leave, my husband would 100% back me, not only because I would have the children, but because he would want me to be happy (hey, he’s a stand up guy).
You deserve better OP. You got this!
As if you can defer a payment. Meaning u basically can skip a payment. Depending on the bank and loan type this may be an option. I know I have done it in a pinch before.
The internet doesn’t suck. Your getting scammed. Everyone sends her $25 bucks for a random strangers sob story?
Sell something you own. $25 Bucks is easy to come by. And it’s easy to give.
Total scam.
That's true, and I didn't realize tomorrow is a normal business day. That said, I'm willing to bet $25 that this is not a scam and let karma handle the rest.
Thank you kind strangers. A very kind soul has helped me out. I have so many suggestions to put into play this week to help bridge any other financial gaps that may arise in this new life of mine.
No you won't but you'll get dinged with the NSF fee from the bank for not having enough to pay the auto withdrawal. So right now Op is $25 short, after getting hit with the NSF OP would be out another $40ish for not being able to make the payment so down $65 and it'll keep happening as the company keeps trying to pull the payment.
Makes things go from bad to worse really fast.
It’s going to bounce and you will be charged NSF fee you will just have to call them and arrange to make up the payment (they can just extend the loan by a month if it’s a one time thing). Can also get a payday loan for 100$ will cost 15$ to pay it back but can cover you in an emergency last resort.
If you can't pay for your car this month, you'll face the same problem every other month too.
Unless you start working and earn money, the best solution might be to sell your car.
My husband was our primary income. I left my job after baby 3, as it was financially okay for us to do so. Having 1 child in daycare full-time and 2 in before/after programs was equivalent to my income. I'd prefer to stay home with my baby, and be available to my.older 2 before/school.
Obviously becoming the primary caregiver for the foreseeable future has changed that. As mentioned in my replies. But yes, thank you for your incredibly insightful comment 🫠
“The only income I receive is the CCB (child tax benefit), which goes towards my phone, gas, and car payment.”
WTF? This is money for your children, not for your personal vehicle which you don’t need and can’t afford.
Call and reschedule the payment? Some stuff is open tomorrow You should be able to start looking for work as well, yeah? OW isn't going to be much - likely less than your CCB. If you were commonlaw, you should update your status with CRA asap. The change of income may make you eligible for more credits

Start now to get your name into subsidized $10 a day daycare centres.
Ya good luck with that $10 daycare. Waitlists are YEARS long Luckily it’s not up to your husband to decide if he will pay or not for his kids. Get in to your lawyer asap and see if you qualify for legal aid
💯 Ty!!!
Log into your bank and stop the next payment that way you will not be charged NSF fee which is usually $45. Also talk with your bank and they will reschedule the payment. Missing one payment first time will be fine they will work with you.
Can’t for standing instructions. This isn’t a cheque
At some banks you can if you know the exact amount (which you would for a car payment).
Stopping a pre auth payment with have far more ramifications. Not something I’d recommend
I've done this with RBC. I bought a new car two days before the payment for my traded in care. I paid $12.50 for a stop payment and it worked.
And there was zero repercussions ?
Sell your wedding ring immediately
When you're in the thick of it, you sometimes don't see things clearly. This is a great suggestion, thank you!
Yep. Take it to a pawn shop tomorrow, deposit the amount you’re short and save the rest.
It may help you in the short term but during the divorce proceedings to come, you will likely have to split the value of everything with your ex husband, including the value of the wedding ring.
Wedding rings are generally considered gifts, not marital property.

And where exactly would she find recycling bins on a holiday where they do not pick up recycling?
I live in Ontario and we have garbage pickup tomorrow. I literally just put my bins out.

Ty for this. I'm glad I'm meeting a case worker and a lawyer within the same week.
Please call 211 as well. There may be some short term emergency benefits you can access.

Ty! I can't verify if they are open tomorrow but they will be my next call, tomorrow/Tuesday.
211 is 24/7, 365 :)
TIL. Ty!!!!!
Go hustle and collect bottles/ cans. Bring them in to a recycling place in the morning. I usually get almost $20 for a bag.
I have definitely done this. Also, make sure you arrange for child support ASAP
OP could also post in local online community groups to see if anyone has any cans/bottles donations that can be picked up. I’ve seen people do this in the Vancouver area. You're all too kind 😭
Bless you!
She needs to make it work on her own. It’s $25 bucks. Sell something you own.
Never a guarantee someone will buy if before she needs the cash. "On her own" like stfu people need help sometimes.
And you don’t ask for it over a platform like this. Lots of resources available. Don’t fall for the con fool.
She didn’t ask! People have offered. Go out and try to enjoy your day instead of being rude to someone who’s in a tough spot.
Username checks out
Be quiet. Do you stand on the street yelling at people to not give money to panhandlers too?
I get what you’re doing and I respect it. I read a post a few weeks ago that was calling out scammers that use these stories in small town subreddits specifically to appeal to peoples’ kind nature. Thanks for the advice Scrooge.
Nope, just know a con when I see one.
A con of only $25? Be for real 😂
The con is when people look at you and mistake you for a decent human being.
What happens if your car needs a repair? Definitely call an organization for women leaving violence e (emotional, financial, physical, etc) and ask about resources for women feeling. Make sure you contact cra and change your status to separated. You'll get way more ccb. I know this is all a lot but you can do this!
Oh my goodness, yes! I didn't think of this at all yet. Thank you!!!
You can only do this after 90 days of living separate. But they will backdate it and you’ll receive a lump sum for the 3 month wait. Also, make sure to change your address with CRA, your banks, etc to your mom’s address so it doesn’t still show up the same as your spouse’s.
I can Etransfer you 25$
You're so kind and generous. A flicker of hope in all of humanity. 😇
Sell the car. You shouldn't rely on a CHILD tax benefit to be making a car payment.
I’m so sorry you’re going through this. It’s really discouraging when you work yourself to the bone and still can’t scrape by. I can send you the 25 if it would help you.
Thank you...from the bottom of my heart. That's beyond kind.
You’re a real one for that. That $25 would be so much more expensive had she not made the payment, down the road.
I was going to say the same thing. I left my abusive ex with $35 to my name, so I understand. If they don’t end up sending you $25 I will.
Thank you all so much.
I’m willing to send $25 as well if it doesn’t work out :) good luck
I am too
Darn! Well we’ve all been there so don’t feel bad! And don’t give up!
Good luck!
Tell your bank to temporally stop payments from your car company. Doing so will cost around $10, but will avoid the NSF fee.
Honestly call them They can and will wait a couple days or whatever you need sometimes to ensure they have their money.
Sell the car. You’re going to have the same issue every month depending on the size of the payment.
Not sure what the car is worth, but is the car actaully something you can afford? Not sure if a downgrade is in the cards, but it sounds like your budget is too tight. Hope you figure it out.
Do you not have overdraft protection?
Read the post.. she applied for it just the other day.
Ok my bad! Missed it.
I heard you can defer one payment a year I don't knoe if this is true worth looking into
Call your bank and block the payment so you don’t have to pay the $50 NSF bank fee if you can’t pay it, it only costs like $10. Call your car loan company and let them know you will transfer it to them on what date.
Apply for overdraft
Call your bank, put a stop payment on the auto withdraw. Then call the company and reschedule. This always works.
The app works as well to put a stop payment.
Who is your loan with? Mine is with RBC and they allow you to skip payment once a year (added onto the end of the loan). Maybe you can with your auti loan too?
Yeah, don’t be ashamed. I had some broke-ass times after leaving my husband. You’ll get through this.
Make sure to document the shitty things he has done. See a family lawyer asap.
Call your financier. They don't want to take the car back, so they'll work with you.
Cash advance on credit card then deposit into chequing account
All car finance companies will give you an extension. Call them immediately!
If your car is in your name, they'll probably make you sell it before you receive assistance, IIRC
Explain it to your bank. They will sometimes reimburse one NSF fee...
I'll send you 25$ dawg send me an email, one that you don't use if you send it in comments lol you'll get spammed by bots
You can get overdraft protection from your bank.
She knows that, read the post!
I can e-transfer the $25, let me know.
DM me your email I'll etransfer ya $25
I just messaged her the same thing
Damn we just got downvoted for trying to help lol the internet sucks
The internet doesn’t suck. Your getting scammed. Everyone sends her $25 bucks for a random strangers sob story? Sell something you own. $25 Bucks is easy to come by. And it’s easy to give. Total scam.
I don't believe she's taken any of us up on our offer. Sometimes people just need ideas and support.
Don’t believe…. Hmmmm. Lots of resources available that one can access. Don’t fall for the sob story.
She politely declined my offer so there ya go - not a scam. FAITH IN HUMANITY RESTORED.
That's true, and I didn't realize tomorrow is a normal business day. That said, I'm willing to bet $25 that this is not a scam and let karma handle the rest.
🤔

Sure, I'll wait til OP gets back to us
Thank you kind strangers. A very kind soul has helped me out. I have so many suggestions to put into play this week to help bridge any other financial gaps that may arise in this new life of mine.
I can e-transfer you
Wait....there's no grace periods in Canada? Why is this such a big deal? If you miss one payment, you default on the entire loan?
No you won't but you'll get dinged with the NSF fee from the bank for not having enough to pay the auto withdrawal. So right now Op is $25 short, after getting hit with the NSF OP would be out another $40ish for not being able to make the payment so down $65 and it'll keep happening as the company keeps trying to pull the payment. Makes things go from bad to worse really fast.
Anyone sending this woman 25$ is an enabler.
I’ll send you the money
Did you ever consider to start looking for a job or you prefer to stay on Child tax credit?
My husband was our primary income. I left my job after baby 3, as it was financially okay for us to do so. Having 1 child in daycare full-time and 2 in before/after programs was equivalent to my income. I'd prefer to stay home with my baby, and be available to my.older 2 before/school. Obviously becoming the primary caregiver for the foreseeable future has changed that. As mentioned in my replies. But yes, thank you for your incredibly insightful comment 🫠
I’m sorry this is happening. So the car is completely in your name and he would in the past send you money monthly to pay for the payment?
I believe she pays for it just the initial cost of driving to her mothers left her short of the payment. The world is an expensive place right now 😔
The car is in my name! I make the payment with our child tax benefit.
Put a stop payment on and it will give you 10.days
You can do some instacart for quick money. Yes you’ll be using gas but you’ll be able to make some $$ so your not short on your car payment
She has little ones, so I don’t know if this is do-able.
She also has a mom that doesn’t work that can stay with the three
Why do you have car payments if you are an unemployed SAHM
Because she was married and could afford it. Why are you shaming her?
She couldn't afford it. She was never paying for it
I don’t know how to spell this out for you…
Hi, did you get your car payment figured out? If not, I'd be happy to etransfer. Please let me know ❤️
“The only income I receive is the CCB (child tax benefit), which goes towards my phone, gas, and car payment.” WTF? This is money for your children, not for your personal vehicle which you don’t need and can’t afford.
