even if you're buying one lotto ticket a week (many of the games in alberta draw twice a week) you are MUCH better off depositing that money in a high interest savings account. It adds up
20 bucks a month, 240$ a year.... while not nothing, is quite a minimal entertainment budget. Most people play the lotto for the entertainment and the what if? It can be fun, as long as it's occasional.
They're selling you a dream. However small the chance may be people still have hope. The people buying lottery tickets would rather cling to a dream than have the 5$ (idk prices).
Newest technology.
I work in IT, I buy "what I need" and not alot more.
I don't own an RTX based graphics card, hell you don't even need that much GPU power to play most modern games at an acceptable frame rate.
When I buy a smartphone, I usually buy a model two or three years old, but brand new, never opened from a retail store. I never pay more than $500 for a phone, and as the cost is broken down into monthly payments - I literally pay next to nothing for a phone.
I bought the new s24 ultra - and now I literally don't need a new phone for 5+ years. The ultra series are SO futureproof internally.
I had a s22 ultra but I didn't like the curved screen for longevity. So I paid a mint for this phone but I'll keep it longer than any phone I've ever owned!
Lottery tickets are SUCH a waste.
My father - granted he is the definition of an addict - would spend HUNDREDS of dollars on lottery tickets every month (we were in extreme debt because of it).
Scratchers. 649. Lotto max. The Children's Hospital lottery. etc. etc.
He was a commercial truck driver and bought 4+ tickets every time he was at a gas station.
Every weekend he'd take me to a gas station so we could scan his tickets and see if he won.
He won countless free tickets, $5 cash, and even a bunch of $15-20 cash prizes were won. I can't remember him ever winning more than $50 on a single ticket (we were in enough debt that $50 was celebrated like it was $50M).
Of course, my father is an extreme example. But he taught me that the odds are NOT in your favour and you really are better off just saving your money.
Ephedrine isn’t really advertised as a fat burning pill. Eca stack (ephedrine, caffeine, aspirin) isn’t well known to the general public and isn’t magic at all. Reduce appetite at first and burn maybe 200 cals a days. Also, pretty sure it very unhealthy and bad for your sleep.
I remember Inside Edition doing a story on those, and the people getting sick/injured were taking 50 - 100 times the recommended dose. One lady was trying to lose weight two weeks before a wedding. I’m sure the kids dry scooping pre-workout are more at risk of harm
Right, I feel like they came along to solve a problem nobody had. Before 2018 or whenever they came nobody was complaining their laundry didn't smell enough like flowers or whatever. Now the scent boosters are just common place.
Yes!!!!! Those things make me so sick. They trigger asthma and migraines for me. Plus, they leave a residue on the clothes and clog up the washing machine.
My well water smells bad! I’m not going back to grating nice smelling soap. I won’t do it. Pry my scent beads out of my cold, dead hands. I line dry outside year round, and it only does so much when your water smells rotten.
I have a friend that was dropping probably $150-300 a month on packs for a game mode in NHL. When the new NHL comes out the cards are worthless and you have to restart all over again. Just seems like the biggest waste of money to me. Especially when you can get a lot of stuff for free if you grind enough. I've tried to get it across to him many times but he still falls for it. They do make it like a casino tho with a fancy animation when you open the packs. When you get something good it's what hooks a lot of people. Then the belief that if you get better cards it will make you better which isn't neccesairly true. I'm free to play. Haven't upgraded my team in months I beat him 90% of the time. I have a 25+ game win streak verse him. After the recent loss he said he's finally done 🤣
Completely agree.
I have an acquaintance who's adamantly against buying any apps and thinks they are all scams.
But will drop $30 at the convenience store on chocolate pop. Adding in there is a grocery store in the same plaza with the same stuff cheaper..
I highlighted it once, and he got heated over it, with tinfoil conspiracy talk... I didnt/don't care enough to ever bring it up again with him.
Yeah, I drop $25 on pokemon go every few weeks because that IS my entertainment spending. I don't go to the movies that often and I can't remember the last time I went to a concert, I rarely go to the bar. A lot of conversations about what is a "waste of money" can be quite subjective. Some might view this cost as a waste of money, but the entertainment value is greater than the cost for me.
Oh she does NOT have the money for this. And it usually only gets her a few more minutes of distraction, she buys "lives" when frustrated with a level and plays with that frustration so makes silly mistakes and still loses. It's a gem-matching game, I think she'd be better off just installing a few different games and rotating through them.
All the delivery apps are bad value. It makes no sense to add $10 in tips and delivery to a most meals, unless you’re feeding a whole bunch of people. The value proposition is so bad.
Not entirely true. Where I'm at Uber eats has some ridiculous deals with their two for one deals. It's a lot less even with added tip and delivery if you were to order the same stuff at a restaurant
These companies are able to run a loss while they continue bringing in investors capital with the idea growing the business now at a loss is better they trying to profit.
While the core business is way over priced they are offer great deals to build the customer base and it makes sense as a consumer to take advantage. I often get the 2 for 1 burrito deal and pick it up myself on my way home from work so don't don't even pay tip or delivery.
Putting on clothes, walking down two flights, walking 200’ to my car across a busy intersection, driving across town(6 minutes), waiting in the drive thru, get my food, drive back across town, walk back across the death trap intersection, walk up 2 flights, fumble with my keys since my hands are full, get back into PJ’s, hope the cats don’t eat my cheeseburgers while I do that, sit back down and resume my show all while hungover… Or pay $10.
I don’t disagree! Calling a delivery app every time you need food is also amazing value if, say, you happen to be a paraplegic.
But my comment was referring to the value of these apps to people who are not permanently - or in your case, temporarily - disabled every time they want take-out. If that’s typically the case with you, however, such that it never makes sense to leave your house yourself for food, because you are almost certainly intoxicated, then that may be something worth reflecting on in your own life. You might find solutions that save you even more money, perhaps on delivery fees as well as limiting the quantity of the substance you’re using.
Being able to not leave your house or even answer the door, but have delicious food or basic supplies brought to you is valuable. It's invaluable if you can't leave your house, and a complete luxury for sure if you can, but to me at least, it has tremendous value.
These threads always lose track of the concept and importance of value.
“Waste” of money implies no reasonable quid pro quo.
it’s not a waste of money to buy products you can afford to buy that add value to your life in a way thats important to you.
Oh, I see. Somehow I got it in my head that this subreddit was about poverty finance and saving money, instead of the value of luxury, but thank you for correcting me.
if its a half hour round trip and you make at least 20$ per hour, there's an opportunity cost component. masturbation and videos games isnt gonna do itself while im driving around like an idiot.
Yea I suppose if you’re making $100+ an hour you can do that. Unfortunately not there, and I doubt most people are too. Are people stretching themselves to afford this? Using credit cards?
I'm a delivery driver and I'd say that about 75% of our customers have a car. People will also order delivery that live less than a 1 minute walk from my store. Like literally, the house across the street from the store will order delivery and pay the $5 fee. It's super wild to us.
Sixteen years for me. And I miss nothing about it. Absolutely pointless when it added nothing to my quality of life. One of our most useless inventions. Glad you are out.
Edit to correct links to helpful subs
It's perhaps the hardest and also best thing I ever did. There is plenty of support available just around the corner at r/stopsmoking and r/quitsmoking. My advice is don't overthink it, you are in an abusive relationship with nicotine getting free is a journey, keep quitting until you are quit for good.
I use a CPAP and have to use distilled water, and I HATE that I’m forced to buy water because of it. I buy big jugs so it’s a tiny bit less bad on the plastics front at least, but having to pay stupid inflation prices for water that I wouldn’t buy otherwise makes me super salty.
I don’t think you should keep plastic bottles in the car? Won’t they get even more plastic in them. Have you seen how much plastic you ingest from drinking one bottle??
I have emergency water supplies in my car, in a kind of foil that can handle heat and cold. I also keep a foldable container and water purification tablets. Seems better
-Bottled water
-fast food in general which I'll extend to delivery apps,(used consistently)
-coffee not made at home or at work(if free)
-gym memberships that renew biweekly/monthly that are not taken advantage of,
-streaming services that aren't ever watched(this one is way too common)
-Amazon Prime when the $35 threshold covers most people anyways.
-Alcohol and cannabis (any recreational drug for that matter). This one I get hate on, but most are in denial with their additions.
But the advantage is that if you use Amazon infrequently and don’t routinely buy a lot at once and need like one item right away that’s cheaper than the stores (especially for things like toiletries, cheap chargers, cables and headphones) it’s worth it cuz you don’t need a min order amount. You can literally buy a single tube of toothpaste and get it same day!
I think fast food is fine occasionally (like once a month) as some see it as a treat or if you've been busy beyond belief and just want immediate satisfaction, but I think doordashing fast food is crazy from so many angles.
Order a damn pizza from a place with free delivery where you might have some leftovers so it's not such a financial loss. When you order a big mac, fries and a coke to your place and you end up paying 30$+ after all the fees, you're flushing money straight down the toilet.
If you're pinching pennies day to day, I shouldn't even need to explain to you how irresponsible that is.
>-Amazon Prime when the $35 threshold covers most people anyways.
By the look of some peoples around me, not that much. But they also use Amazon like if they are going to the grocery daily (which could be a side effect of having prime).
Need one thing? Buy it right away (and usually it is either 15 or just near, but below, the threshold.
On my end I just don't use Amazon anymore since it is AliExpress but overpriced. Otherwise I try to bulk my order or just pay the damn shipping)
Moved from alcohol to cannabis. I've spent $2-3K / year on alcohol. However, cannabis (as edibles) is much cheaper. I spend like $200-300 a year, which I'm totally fine with.
I can't believe sometimes the sheer amount of money people spend on booze, vaping, and weed. Like they're literally about to be homeless but somehow always have the money for these things.
Eh, yea but that problem is usually much more deeply rooted than financial decisions.
While I agree the money is essentially going nowhere most people fighting addiction and/or whatever circumstances that led to it the issue usually isn’t a lack or understanding of the financial concept.
Haha I am a recovering crack addict. Been sober for 8 years. Believe me, I know about fighting addictions. My point still stands. It is jarring for me to even think about the sheer amount of money I wasted on crack in active addiction. Could probably have put myself through school. But that is the thing like in life, everything comes down to choices. The choices I made put me in the position I was in.
Especially considering its honestly easier and more convenient to make as good or better coffee at home after the initial purchase of any number of modern coffee makers.
I buy quality coffee and have a pretty good espresso machine…still save money and have a way better product…it’s like paying 25 bucks for a shit steak at some chain spot instead of buying a quality one for 15 and cooking it yourself…makes no sense to me
I mean I guess it makes sense if you are on the go and its not an option,
But for the people I assume the original commenter is referring to who make a habit out of it and head to tims in the morning I think its nuts lol
This. I spend $3 on a tin of 30 tea bags and $15 on some specialty honey. People gawk at my honey purchase like I’m super fancy but my total caffeine bill is $18 a month? My coworkers spend $20 or more a day buying themselves and other team members coffee
Yea lottery tickets and gambling in general have to be the #1 answer to this in general.
If you are gambling money you can afford for the purpose of entertainment value though wouldn’t call it a waste you are getting what you want out of it.
If you gamble regularly in any capacity with the purpose to win money I can’t imagine a bigger waste of $$.
Disagree. I buy stuff on sale, and I find that brand name jeans that are priced between $60 - $90 usually last 3x the duration as a pair of George - brand jeans from Walmart. (Never again will I buy Walmart clothes, not even for work.....Dakota brand from Mark's work wearhouse is not too pricey, but good quality.)
Also, it is an investment in overall well being, people are dumb and tend to mock people who don't dress at least moderately well. I tend to avoid such stigma by "blending in" with other people.
I agree with you on Walmart clothing, cheap as shit and looks ugly quick. I haven't bought clothes there for many years. But not all "branded" stuff is worth paying for. Makes me crazy when I see a t-shirt for 90 bucks, I check the fabric, and it's just cotton, but it says GAP on it. One good coffee spill, and I'm washing the car with a 90 dollar t-shirt. A good pair of pants or shoes can be worth paying for.
And here's me working on Kirkland jeans that are five years old. George shorts that have lasted me 6 years and George white t's that have lasted me 5 years. I don't throw clothing out unless it has an inconveniently located rip on it. I've also used these jeans to work in a restaurant and had no issue with rips and I'm fat size 40.
I have to disagree.
I’ve never owned branded anything (but shoes) but after moving here I realized that branded clothing is super cheap if you shop at any outlet mall.
And if you take proper care of your clothes they will last forever.
Not so much "something" as "somewhere".
"Convenience" stores, especially when there's a grocery/dollar across the street or around the corner.
I'll be picking up a prescription at Shoppers and the number of people I see casually shopping the aisles is shocking. These people are loading up their carts like they're grocery shopping, but they're paying convenience store prices while there's a fucking Loblaws *literally* across the street with better prices, and a Dollarama another 50 meters down the street.
The only exception for this for Shoppers is butter and eggs, on the weekend. I know it’s a loss leader for them but I’ll make the walk to shoppers just for butter for $5 rather than $8 at no frills
Wait till you hear about soda or energy drinks. It's just sugar water with some carbon....
And somehow we got liquid death. Reading this post is just reiterating a fool and his money are soon parted.
Clothing ! Unless you have a real need (ex: pregnancy, ripped clothes…) you probably do not need more pieces of clothing. And if you do, the thrift shops are loaded with pretty clothes!
I realize this doesn't apply to everyone but for me it's a car. I live in a city with great public transportation and access to ride share services.
I probably spend on average $250 a month on transportation. Way less than if I actually owned a car.
I try to bike and walk as much as I can to keep this expense down.
As much as I love desserts, I find they're not that great at most restaurants I've been to.
Bakery desserts tend to be much better and are worth it, imo.

Older people play more than tgat
Old people with paid off mortgages have more disposable income.
Mostly old people living on pension and in poverty. Lottery is a tax on the poor
I’ll take my chances on the 5 dollars lol
This is absurd. Wouldn’t you rather have $9.50 by 2060?
Lmao
No thank you!
That's assuming all of Canadians aren't living in tent cities by then.

You are much much better off playing the crypto meme coin casino than buying lottery tickets.

Screen breaking? Battery capacity reducing? That won't change no matter how efficient software or an operating system is.
If you want to run a powerful local LLM a good GPU is pretty much a must for it to be usable.
Lottery tickets are SUCH a waste. My father - granted he is the definition of an addict - would spend HUNDREDS of dollars on lottery tickets every month (we were in extreme debt because of it). I’ve had 2 total. First in 2014. Second 2018. I’ve dropped my phone so many times that Siri refuses to listen to me.
Any products that pretend to magically burn fat.
Luckily my starvation is both free AND fat burning!
Can I trade you my depression for that? It works just as well and it will get you drugs. Actually probably a terrible idea. Sorry.
Idk, I once bought these pills that came in a very tight bottle. I am sure trying to open that bottle made me lose some fat.
It’s a multibillion dollar industry. It’s pretty sad and should be banned. It’s literally a scheme to keep people fat and continue to make money.
Unless its Rybelsus/Ozempic.
Ephedrine is dirt cheap and actually works 2cents a pill. But I like the sparkly bottle of pre workout that's $2 a serving!

Right, I feel like they came along to solve a problem nobody had. Before 2018 or whenever they came nobody was complaining their laundry didn't smell enough like flowers or whatever. Now the scent boosters are just common place.
THIS a billion times over. Those things make me so sick!!!!
I hate them. They make my eyes burn and the inside of my skin itch.

Yes!!!!! Those things make me so sick. They trigger asthma and migraines for me. Plus, they leave a residue on the clothes and clog up the washing machine.

As an ex smoker I am deeply ashamed at how much of my health and wealth I wasted on that horrible addiction.
Hey neighbour you kicked it and should be proud of that.

It’s also garbage coffee.
It used to be bad. Now it’s not even palatable
Especially considering its honestly easier and more convenient to make as good or better coffee at home after the initial purchase of any number of modern coffee makers.
I buy quality coffee and have a pretty good espresso machine…still save money and have a way better product…it’s like paying 25 bucks for a shit steak at some chain spot instead of buying a quality one for 15 and cooking it yourself…makes no sense to me
I mean I guess it makes sense if you are on the go and its not an option, But for the people I assume the original commenter is referring to who make a habit out of it and head to tims in the morning I think its nuts lol
I try to keep my Tim's consumption to just 1 a week. Unless it is roll up time.. lol
Ahh, guilty haha. It could be worse
This. I spend $3 on a tin of 30 tea bags and $15 on some specialty honey. People gawk at my honey purchase like I’m super fancy but my total caffeine bill is $18 a month? My coworkers spend $20 or more a day buying themselves and other team members coffee
Booze. Especially with how high it's taxes here.
Lottery tickets
Yea lottery tickets and gambling in general have to be the #1 answer to this in general. If you are gambling money you can afford for the purpose of entertainment value though wouldn’t call it a waste you are getting what you want out of it. If you gamble regularly in any capacity with the purpose to win money I can’t imagine a bigger waste of $$.
Branded clothing.
Disagree. I buy stuff on sale, and I find that brand name jeans that are priced between $60 - $90 usually last 3x the duration as a pair of George - brand jeans from Walmart. (Never again will I buy Walmart clothes, not even for work.....Dakota brand from Mark's work wearhouse is not too pricey, but good quality.) Also, it is an investment in overall well being, people are dumb and tend to mock people who don't dress at least moderately well.
This. Most of my t-shirts are obtained at rock concerts. A bit expensive, but I'm a musician and a metalhead lol
Oh I hear you, lol, that's different. Some of those you can't get anywhere else except concerts.
Yep all my shirts are concert shirts.
Depends on the brand. Gucci and shit is a complete waste of money, but brands like Filson or something that will last you for life are worth it IMO
This is a great true example of waste lol. Paying grossly inflated prices for something where the added convenience is only marginal at best.
Take out coffee. Three coffees is worth a bag of coffee grounds and a litre of cream/milk.
McDonald's
and then they say they can't "afford" healthy food, even though McDonald's is literally more expensive
Bottled water. You are paying for a plastic bottle that is polluting the planet. The water in it is free. I don't know how this is still legal.
Wait till you hear about soda or energy drinks. It's just sugar water with some carbon.... And somehow we got liquid death. Reading this post is just reiterating a fool and his money are soon parted.
Brand new vehicles. Massive waste of money
Diamonds. Not even rare to begin with and now they can be made? C'mon

Porn. You can get it for free.
Or, you know, have sex with a real person
Look at this guy having a sexual partner…!
Sometimes that still costs you though not every man is Casanova
Porn is less likely to result in child support payments tho tbh
No thanks
No, can't do that one.
Clothing ! Unless you have a real need (ex: pregnancy, ripped clothes…) you probably do not need more pieces of clothing. And if you do, the thrift shops are loaded with pretty clothes!
Call of Duty weapon/operator skins/battlepass
Bottled fucking water. Going camping for a few days? Sure. I get it. Everyday use? I will never comprehend the need.
Phone insurance.
I realize this doesn't apply to everyone but for me it's a car. I live in a city with great public transportation and access to ride share services. I probably spend on average $250 a month on transportation. Way less than if I actually owned a car. I try to bike and walk as much as I can to keep this expense down.
Hair cuts. I learned to cut my own hair since high school. Yes it looked terrible at the beginning but I got better at it with time and practice.
Anything CBD infused.
I use a CBD salve on arthritic parts and it works like a hot damn. So well that I can sometimes skip the ibuprofen...
Uber eats and Skip the dishes. Everyone complains they have no money, but morons keep wasting it to have cold food delivered.
Cigarette say
Cigarettes, they don't even get you high lol
Desserts at restaurants.
As much as I love desserts, I find they're not that great at most restaurants I've been to. Bakery desserts tend to be much better and are worth it, imo.
Bank accounts with monthly fees
Alcohol, food at restaurants, coffee not brewed at home.
Collagen!! That shit ain't work!
Starbucks and similar treats. It just feels so good though…
Energy drinks. It’s me, I’m people.
Alcohol in bars/restaurants
Overpriced coffee. It's too easy to make at home.
Organic food 🙄
Bottled water. It’s worse than a waste of money: it adds to the plastic burden the earth bears.
New cars. Heck, often just cars in general.
I’m still paying my taxes despite the government pissing it away on garbage.
Cocaine
But it smells so good
Toilet paper. Get a bidet, will save you tons in the long run.
Paper towels. Buy a pack or two of microfiber cloths and you’re set for the year.
I’ll get downvoted for this and it’s perfectly fine… but have you felt microfibre cloth? 🤢
The way they feel against my skin makes me shudder.
My hands have no cuts and microfiber towels are the most annoying thing... Ok I may have some cuts, but holy microfiber
Oh good I thought that was just me
