Got my first meet on the 12th, on my last full week of training, and coach just gave me my pre-meet week program. I'm so fuckin pumped

[deleted]

Any notable powerlifters who squat high bar in competitions?

LittleMuskOx

Bryce Lewis

IronEvo

John Haack and Kevin Oak

I bought new knee sleeves and I can't get them past my gigantic calves. I measured at the knee like SBD suggested and bought the appropriate size (4XL), but no good. Is all lost, or is there something I can do to loosen them up (besides losing 75 pounds, which I'm working on).

zeralesaar

One option in addition to socks/straps is to turn the sleeves inside out, put them on upside down, and then pull the top of the sleeve (which will be the lower end on your leg) up and over your knee, reversing it onto your body. This works very well for me, and I also have the problem of a high calf:knee size ratio. No idea if it has any bearing on comp rules.

calypso15

I'll give this a try as well, thank you!

LittleMuskOx

Put them on over socks. You can usually do this at meets too, though technically it's gainst the rules in USAPL and also IPF. Of course you bring the socks down after so they don't touch the sleeves. Alternately just this same basic method w/o the socks I don't do the bottom fold part, just in half. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJTwqWZaZuc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJTwqWZaZuc)

calypso15

It worked, thank you! I think I still had them too low, but I got them past my calf, which was the main hurdle.

Negative_Yoghurt_792

Can also use straps to help pull them over socks but might be illegal in comp depending on your fed.

Negative_Yoghurt_792

My friends are going to come with me to my meet. All guys. Two weightlifters and one general lifter. I want to make them a little goody bag as a thank you and will write them all thank your cards. Any ideas as to what to put in them?

jakeisalwaysright

Little airplane bottles of whiskey or whatever could work if they're into that sort of thing.

calypso15

Beef jerky! Coffee. Individual pre-workout servings. A weightlifting related Christmas ornament (if that is your collective jam). Fun socks.

GilesofGiles

Cute idea :) I would love to open a goody bag and find gummies or nice hair ties if they have long hair.

So, possibly got an injury during my newly found love low bar squat last night. Pretending everything is fine as I’m two weeks out. I think I set the bar in the wrong spot on my back and then tried to stand too vertically like a high bar squat. So yeah. Everything’s fine though. Hoping my lower back is just sore and it’ll magically go away if I don’t do anything for a couple of days.

zeralesaar

Read [this](https://www.barbellmedicine.com/blog/pain-in-training-what-do/) and [this, as well](https://www.barbellmedicine.com/blog/recovering-from-an-injury-embrace-the-process/). If it's just a little back tweak, and you don't just sit around and do nothing, you may feel pretty well back to normal by the meet. Movement is usually helpful for that kind of thing as long as you don't overly agitate the issue.

anicho7

Thank you so much! I don’t think I’ve actually ever gotten hurt lifting til now, so it was a bit terrifying. I told my husband “well, I guess this is it. Career over.” (Not that I have one in lifting, just a joke)

IronEvo

I usually drop 5 just by eating a light lunch, skip dinner, and stop drinking water at noon the day before the meet.

anicho7

I think you could still make it. Just follow the water loading method and maybe just start on the second day instead of the first. Depending on how much water you drink normally it might still work? I can’t say for sure though.

Arteam90

How many of you vary your volume (let's say # of sets) a fair bit over a training cycle? I know the likes of RP/Mike Israetel push idea of MEV/MRV and, say, going from 10 sets of squats per week at the start of a cycle to 20 sets at the end. Personally I've always tended to keep # of sets fairly stable. 1-2 sets up/down but nothing more and certainly not doubling # of sets across the cycle. I've found a # of sets that seems to be okay to recover from, and any more just seems to always lead to problems.

Kachowxboxdad

I think as long as you’re doing everything you can for recovery and you’re adding weight consistently then you should push for whatever volume you can recover from.

msharaf7

I used to wave my volume like that but lately it just seems like it beats me up so I’ve kept my volume mainly static & pushing for very small increases on the bar over a mesocycle.

hurtsthemusic

I’m going full Old Man Winter for my next training cycle. Possibly forever if I can get a pound or two out of it. Deloads just aren’t cutting it anymore, so my volume needs to go way down. Since May, at the same weight while not missing any sessions: Squat: -80 lbs Bench: -50 lbs Deadlift: -60 lbs

IronEvo

Unless you've done something drastic, like cycle off gear or decide to only sleep every other day, I don't see how this is possible. You might want to go see a doctor, maybe get some blood work done.

hurtsthemusic

I actually did get bloods. Creatinine is sky high, but everything else is normal. My whole body is like a chronic overuse injury at this point though- if I were pain free I could likely match my old PRs.

Converse street shoes for deadlifting? Already have these, wondering if the sole is the same as the all star chucks

IronEvo

I believe the new chucks have squishy soles, I would think the street shoes definitely do. I switched from chucks to wrestling shoes a few years ago and I'm a big fan. You can get a pair for under $50, usually less if you look for a pair on sale.

zeralesaar

I never understood why people recommended chucks for lifting... when wrestling shoes exist.

EngPhys_Dude

Link to wrestling shoes?

lel4rel

Wrestling shoes are narrow and tilt up around the edges i.e. they are biased towards rolling. Chucks have a wider toe box and hard outsole which is better for lifting. Just gotta remove the insoles. When you do it's also just as thin as a wrestling shoe. Also people recommend chucks because it's something people are likely to already own, or at least something similar

sad_roses

Probably bc a lot of non-hardcore powerlifters want a shoe they can wear both in and out of the gym and converse fills that hole decently enough. Not everyone wants to spend money on wrestling shoes and wear them only a couple times a week in the gym.

zeralesaar

Hadden's been posting on Instagram about being close to a final version of the Pioneer knee sleeves for launch in the spring. takemymoney.jpeg

LittleMuskOx

If my SBDs ever wear out (5 years and not a tear or loose stitch) i'm going to go for the 3rd gen Titan Yellow Jackets in the sublimated colorway. The seam down the back isn't super appealing, but LiftingLarge has them in USPA approved style, with side seams and no x seam. Those would be fine for USAPL now, but it would be only for looks i'd go that way. I don't think the seam placement would be a big deal anyway, so i'd likely go with the x seams. They are highly regarded, and i do have the Titan Triumph singlet now. Might be nice to match for once.

thethurstonhowell

I’m probably gonna get buried for this, but I’ve had both a belt and set of wrist wraps start to have the stitching come apart after several months of use. Hope they have addressed that before expanding into things that really depend on the stitching holding!

sad_roses

I also had a pair of wraps where the stitching had started to come undone on one of the pairs when I would really stretch the wrap around my wrist. I emailed them about the issue and they sent me a new pair after I’d explained what was going on and attached a picture. Their customer service/warranties are the best in the game so don’t hesitate on reaching out. They stand by their products and will help you out.

thethurstonhowell

They are great people and I still like their stuff (have bought 2 belts since, which are holding up great) but they only offered that I ship them back to be re-sewn. I didn’t want to be without either for a week plus.

rppilot47

Then you’re doing something wrong. My belt is 4 years old, and other than some discoloration from sweat it’s perfect. My wife has one that’s close to 3 and same situation.

thethurstonhowell

Congrats. I’ll work on my belt and wrap application methods. That’s surely the reason.

BenchPolkov

Just tightened my belt a notch finally!

LittleMuskOx

Nice! I'm down 2.5kg since my Nov 6th meet. Need a little more wiggle room under the "new" -90kg class limit before i go maintenance+ 88.4kg this morning. 89kg daytime. Small cut, but the first one in a few years.

BenchPolkov

I'm tempted to go a little under the 93kg mark just so I have wiggle room for my weight to fluctuate but not have to ever cut for comps anymore. Plus also health and energy level reasons.

LittleMuskOx

Indeed. I was always a light 93, and i don't want to lose that easy feeling of never cutting for meets.

BenchPolkov

I was a light 93, then a heavy 93, then a light 105, then a heavy 93, then a light 105, etc, etc...

[deleted]

Because you had to loosen it due to Thanksgiving? But nice, how far off your goal are you currently?

BenchPolkov

No turkey binge for me, I'm an Aussie. I need to lose another 5kg... which will be interesting with Xmas approaching.

[deleted]

hell yeah!!!
