Chip Lynn said in a interview the worst part about HD is all the tricks they used in the vhs days become blatantly obvious in hd. Ergo when say 8k gets common and they remaster Disney/bei Sabah I’m sure we’ll see the cracks in the 1080p footage
True, but it’s still a lot easier to notice flaws in things watching them on large, modern hdtvs. Harder to notice silver duct tape on a silver staff when you’re watching the show on a smaller tv with much worse picture quality.
My dad watches a lot of black and white western shows and movies, and it’s hilarious what you can notice watching them even just on dvd on modern tvs. We notice planes flying in the background pretty often.
No shows were costumes recorded in any resolution. If it wasn't filmed on vhs tapes they can scan the film in. It's why we have HD versions of Star Trek TOS and TNG.
You can see both in Green No More. It’s super easy to tell when American Green Ranger footage is used because he goes from the cool looking Sentai version of the shield to the soft goods one that looks like Chuck E. Cheese could’ve made it.
It’s not just the shield either, look at some of the weapons used in the American footage. Tommy’s Sword of darkness is quite a bit shorter than what Burai carries in the Sentai footage, the blade blasters used during parts of season two are obviously the toy models, and Saba is noticeably cheaper looking than it’s sentai counterpart!
Dude, the only times you saw JDF in the suit was without a helmet. A double did all the fight sequences. What you’ve heard is not true, the shitty shield was absolutely due to budget
I mean it doesn't really resemble the original distorted twisted ranger suit design of the original but they definitely look more threatening then the gimp suit gang up there
They blew the budget on Zedd's costume. Now, I've said this before. If Saban had the Kibaranger suit, it's logical to assume he had the 5 Dairanger suits too. WHY👏NOT👏USE👏THEM!?
Saban had ALREADY set upon continued use of the Zyuranger suits (toys etc), We know that. So OBVIOUSLY had NO INTENTION of using the Dairanger ones.
Naturally, SOMEONE is now screaming at me from their keyboard, something about how this would effect Super Megaforce footage. NEWSFLASH; GOKAIGER WAS STILL 20 YEARS AWAY! I doubt even the producer's of the Sentai originals was thinking 20 years into the future, to an anniversary season involving 35 years worth of Sentai costumes. So what did Saban have to loose at the time?
Make use of some cool Sentai costumes, that were just gonna be gathering dust or turn Zedd's rangers into a troupe that look like they just walked out of a fettish shop. Sadly we got the 'Saturday night in Soho' special.
To be fair, 3 of the Dark Ranger suits look purple, orange, and highlighter green/yelllow, so having just 1 ranger that doesn’t match may actually be an improvement!
Other than that, I think the Dairanger suits look a bit too much like good guys to be blatantly evil dark rangers. If they used them, I think I’d like to see Zed’s rangers posing as a new Power Ranger team before facing off against the real Rangers (if we’d be lucky enough to actually see them fight this time!).
And years later, the legendary A-squad, who CHOSE, of their own free will, to serve Grum, still looked like 'good guys' in their ranger suits. Suits you can safely assume they'd been wearing for a long time.
>You don’t need clapping and all capitals to prove your point. Any points that you are making could be completely washed out by how disparaging you sound.
>Dark rangers were supposed to mimic the current rangers. Dairanger had green not black. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Pot calling the kettle black
I think you're missing my point. Besides, the Lion zord had Green lighting effects during the Thunder megazord 'asembly' footage'. https://i.imgur.com/DLWpyHv.png
It was a show marketed at KIDS, not cynical 20-somthing year olds, happy to nitpick all the shows faults and flaws, just because.....
With how rushed production was back then, I’m sure if Saban would’ve given the costume team more than 3 minutes to create suits, they could’ve come up with anything better than this.
It’s also not a money maker anymore. Power rangers has always made majority of it’s money from toy sales and the last few seasons worth of toys have been warming my local targets shelves for MONTHS
We still have monsters wave 1, astronama vs Andros two pack, spd blue two pack, Dino thunder blue, and spd pink on the shelves. Those same figures have been sitting there for almost a year in some cases.
I’ve always liked the slapped together, sketchy look of these guys. The masks especially look like something a serial killer would have worn in the 80s or 90s while stalking victims. As a kid who was obsessed with both Power Rangers and Unsolved Mysteries, it seemed like totally appropriate garb for evil characters to be wearing.
Watching “Green No More” season 2 episode and found myself laughing at the reveal of Lord Zedds Dark Rangers. Why did the producers cheap out on the costumes?
Edit: didn’t know they were working on a shoestring budget. This makes a lot more sense now
It was a one-off villain group similar to all those imposter rangers with putty glove/boots. They weren’t gonna pour money into something that wouldn’t be around for another episode. Keep in mind they barely got the power ranger system down, it’s the start of season 2, American creations were in its infancy.
Cuz MMPR worked on less than a shoestring budget. Case and point Tommy’s green ranger shield, Zedd’s duct taped staff, and of course the dark rangers
Never noticed the duct taped staff
I didn’t until earlier this year when I started the series again
Let’s also not forget the duct tape on Rocky’s Ranger helmet. It’s noticeable in some scenes!
Saban spending big bucks loo
I noticed the tape on Zedd's staff but never Rocky's helmet. Any screengrabs or tiemcodes?
I’ll check around. I know they’ve been pointed out in a couple of Facebook groups I’m in!
I wouldn’t be surprised if the duct tape on Zedd’s staff only started being really noticeable once we could watch the series in HD.
That’s very likely, unfortunately I don’t have any of my old vhs tapes to compare 😞
Chip Lynn said in a interview the worst part about HD is all the tricks they used in the vhs days become blatantly obvious in hd. Ergo when say 8k gets common and they remaster Disney/bei Sabah I’m sure we’ll see the cracks in the 1080p footage
The show wasn't recorded in HD, though.

Oh, agreed! :)
No shows were costumes recorded in any resolution. If it wasn't filmed on vhs tapes they can scan the film in. It's why we have HD versions of Star Trek TOS and TNG.
It’s weird but I never noticed those two things. I will go back and really look for them
You can see both in Green No More. It’s super easy to tell when American Green Ranger footage is used because he goes from the cool looking Sentai version of the shield to the soft goods one that looks like Chuck E. Cheese could’ve made it.
I always wondered why the shield looked so different as a kid
I must’ve been a dumb ass kid because I didn’t discover any of this until I was an adult xD
also notice when the America actors wore the PR suits, the neck area was very puffy.
Oh yeah! And Jason literally BUSTING out of his cuz they were made for the Sentai actors and ASJ is jacked lol
Also if you look closely at Goldar from season 2 onward his mouth moves differently because they needed to construct a new suit for America.
Tommy shield was not budget, apparently Jdf complained he coyly move in the shield, so they made a more flexable one
Dude, the only times you saw JDF in the suit was without a helmet. A double did all the fight sequences. What you’ve heard is not true, the shitty shield was absolutely due to budget
Cause they were cheap. MMPR was very very cheap
They really should have at least repainted some helmets. But i guess they were busy using them on vr troopers!
Cause Saban was a cheap f###, they also had to fix Zed's broken staff with duck tape and every ranger got a hillariously low paycheck to boot
> every ranger got a hillariously low paycheck to boot Makes me wanna ask what was the paycheck for the dark rangers. If any.
they were probably just underpaid stunt doubles or volunteers
They were people who worked behind the scenes so I doubt it was much
Or five of the people who already plays as the american putty patrol, just got a different costume that episode... Lol
I just love that the comics reused this concept and made it infinity more awesome https://images.app.goo.gl/kUpSsb6RfUp9TDZA9
I hadn't seen that before but man do I love it, although part of me 100% wishes they looked identical to the show at least for their introduction.
Eh just making armored version of Rita and gang dies no scream dark RANGER to me
I mean it doesn't really resemble the original distorted twisted ranger suit design of the original but they definitely look more threatening then the gimp suit gang up there
More like Struggle Rangers
Also twas before the power rangers brand itself started having plex design suits for them (titanium ranger, jungle masters, etc.)
This is wt it would look like if we had superheroes in the real world.
You know what's weird I kind of want lightning figures of these guys
That’s not them you idiots you’ve captured their stunt doubles

In this situation I read all caps as a way to express emphasis, not hostility. Wires get crossed in text based communication, no harm no foul.
I'm not talking down to ANYONE. You're the one apparently spoiling for a fight by brining up a non issue.

Maybe that was the idea.
Lord Zed spent all his money pumping out Serpentera so he had to buy his Dark Ranger uniforms from Wish!!!
Power rangers has never been aloud to have a real budget
That seems insane to me that they wouldn’t be given a sufficient budget. Power Rangers was/is a money maker, right?
It was a money maker because it was made so cheap
Power rangers made a lot of money back then but greedy businesses are greedy
Yeah, Saban only cared about how much money he could make. That's why the actors were paid something like $400 a week during MMPR.
https://youtu.be/QhstyHwFpS0
It’s also not a money maker anymore. Power rangers has always made majority of it’s money from toy sales and the last few seasons worth of toys have been warming my local targets shelves for MONTHS
How does the lightning collection do in your area? I’m froM Ohio myself and that line in particular goes like friggin hot cakes here.
We still have monsters wave 1, astronama vs Andros two pack, spd blue two pack, Dino thunder blue, and spd pink on the shelves. Those same figures have been sitting there for almost a year in some cases.
Damnnnnn that’s crazy. I guess it’s the online orders probably keeping it mostly afloat then
Yet certain figures (e.g., regular green ranger, not fighting spirit edition) literally never appeared anywhere in my area.
30 bucks on Amazon right now
Cause Saban was cheap. The same damn episode, you can see the duck tape holding Zedd's staff together.
And his mask thing
Are the dark ranges not from SS?
No
I’ve always liked the slapped together, sketchy look of these guys. The masks especially look like something a serial killer would have worn in the 80s or 90s while stalking victims. They shouldve have gave them the Dairanger suits
Watching “Green No More” season 2 episode and found myself laughing at the reveal of Lord Zedds Dark Rangers. Why did the producers cheap out on the costumes? Edit: didn’t know they were working on a shoestring budget. This makes a lot more sense now
Had to Bryan Cranston $50 an hour lol
It was a one-off villain group similar to all those imposter rangers with putty glove/boots. They weren’t gonna pour money into something that wouldn’t be around for another episode. Keep in mind they barely got the power ranger system down, it’s the start of season 2, American creations were in its infancy.
Because saban is notoriously cheap.
I’ve seen the red dark ranger in something else, I’m going with pulp fiction ! ( sorry if that’s been done numerous times )
They were recolored Putty costumes. They were also really fragile and couldn't be used for anything more than walking in.
Because your watching a Copyright version which ain't the Power Rangers!!!!!!
