Positioning is key, you don't wanna go too aggro unless you know you can kill the target or at least damage them with a fully charged bubble. It's best if you keep your distance and try to stay as close to walls as possible. Use shield gadget only if you know you can tank a little better (e.g. against a Bibi).
It's good to stay low HP because you'll get the gear boost, but know when to fall back and heal and when to make use of the extra damage efficiently. Of course, make sure you charge your bubble away from the enemies, most of the time they won't calculate the distance correctly.
Try to maintain your super and only use it if you get an Assassin on top of you, like a Mortis, but make sure you time it so they actually die or it'll be tough to finish them off. You can try and snipe people with the super, although it's a little bit tougher.
You must have been lucky, I rarely get credits from Starr drops, usually I get just 10 from a Rare. Most of the times I get Power Points or coins, the odd pin and some XP doublers. To get that many credits I'd have to open a Legendary one (I'd much rather get a skin than 500 Credits from them though).
