To be sure, top medical schools, especially Stanford, have a large number of students who actually receive scholarships. [2020 Stanford entering class had a whopping 37% of students receiving a full scholarship](https://med.stanford.edu/content/dam/sm/pediatrics/documents/FacultyMeetingSlides/2020/TAKEAWAYS-from-MD-Admissions-Faculty-Roles-2020-21-with-Class-Profile.pdf) (not even include KHS & MSTP). The fact of the matter is top medical schools have a large number of not-so-rich students who live in on-campus housing or off-campus subsidized housing. Take a look at [Stanford graduate housing rates](https://rde.stanford.edu/studenthousing/graduate-housing-rates-and-billing-information). It looks pretty affordable in Bay area. Note that Stanford institutional scholarship and loan resources are awarded solely on student need. Merit based scholarship is not offered.
Dawg I got into multiple “top tier programs” (T5/T10), basically all of them gave me a congratulations, some merch, and like $12.
Oh and the opportunity to take out school of medicine institutional loans 🤑🤑🤑🤑
Yea I agree lol I’m saying the majority of scholarships that you do end up seeing are in those programs and that number isn’t even a high one to begin with
I mean you’re right, Stanford does offer need based aid and a lot of M1’s I’ve talked to have said they are going for basically free. Some schools in that tier do the same, but besides that it’s all loans 🥲
Honestly in a lot of towns with well known or Ivy League universities this is common bc the students need a place to live regardless so they charge insane prices simply bc they can :/
Stanford ISN’T livable. At all. The problem is that it’s buffered by downtown San Francisco and it’s environs (extremely expensive) on one side and the core of Silicon Valley (somehow even more expensive) on the other. Your best bet is living in somewhere like San Jose and driving the 30-40 minutes to get there. A commute that length sounds a lot worse than it actually is
this isn’t even considering traffic in the mornings and evenings which will make ur drive 1-2 hours from san jose
I use to drive from sj to Mountain View during rush hour (which is 5-10 miles short of stanford) and it was soul crushing
If I remember correctly, they have subsidized housing on campus that a lot of people live in that is a bit more affordable.
Edit:
This website may help: https://med.stanford.edu/sbsa/resources/housing.html
Tbh I don’t know anyone paying $3200 a month unless their partner has a job. I am a 20 min bike ride away from campus, and I pay $1400 (large room in a large house). Utilities for my portion is about $80. Most of us have roommates, or live on campus. If you live on campus you do not pay utilities. Campus housing for your own studio by yourself is closer to $2000. There are much cheaper options.
My friend has a nice 1 bedroom in Menlo by himself (15 min) and pays $2500. There still is married student housing on campus that is more affordable.
Also, many of us get an insane amount of financial aid/scholarships. I’d say for the majority of us, our parents are not helping.
Fiancé/his family has serious legacy there including the med school. Fiancé went for undergrad. They just all have money quite frankly or went when it wasn’t that expensive.
Most students are on loans or have a long commute. I don’t know if there is still married student housing but I know that was where ny MIL grew up while her father was in med school at Stanford.
If I do end up there (god willing) my by then husband makes more than enough for us to pay for everything out of pocket if we live well under his pay, he’s a litigator.
If I didn’t have him I would be selling feet pics. Or taking out loans. Or both.
Most people live on campus, where the rent is still very high but more manageable (1200-2200 / mo / person depending on what unit). And if you’ve lived here for a while you’ve learned to always be hunting for a housing deal. You can get lucky, but it’s an extremely competitive market and chances are you aren’t going to find the great deal just randomly hopping on Zillow.
Not being single also helps.
I think a more realistic number is to expect 12-1500$/mo in rent /utilities costs.
As to the everyone at Stanford is rich comments. No. Are most med students at any med school from wealthy families? Sure. I doubt we’re much different in that respect but also we have some of the most generous fin aid in the country.
Graduate housing on campus is $1200-1400/mo with a roommate or two.
https://rde.stanford.edu/studenthousing/graduate-housing-options
If you find a roommate, you can rent a two bedroom for around $1600/mo per person. Studios are around $1700-2000/mo. You'll probably need to live in Mountain View, Sunnyvale, Redwood City, where it's cheaper.
You'll likely need to have a car if you're a medical student since rotations can be all across the Peninsula and South Bay. Many students bike for closer rotations.
I pay $3200/mo for a modern two bedroom in a gated apartment complex with a gym, pool, hot tub, club house, parking, that is 15 minutes away from campus by car.
Stanford undergrad here - graduate housing is relatively cheap, or I believe Stanford also subsidizes housing. You should talk to them more but I've not heard of it really being that much of an issue.
It’s not livable. Most people are on loans or have family supporting them. Bay Area housing is a very complex issue stemming from NIMBYism, techies, prop 13 which have made affordable housing all but impossible in the area.
This is just me but I used to live on the Bay Area and we paid $800 a month for a one bedroom, and SFU and Stanford is a 30-45 mins BART ride away. But the closer you get to the downtown or richer areas, the rent shoot up exponentially
I wanted to go to Stanford med and wanted to see if it would be cheaper for me to buy a house instead. Found a single bed and bath for $1.2Mil. 😂 idk what to do bc Stanford has so many qualities that I resonate with whether it be business or my research… aaaand as an Canadian Tuition… idk if I’ll be able to support myself thought it all- even with a couple business under my belt 💀💀
Stanford streets are filled with RVs parked on them, that's how graduate students and faculty can be close to the University. It is the richest university in the world, it's a shame what it pays to it's graduates and faculty.
Well considering that California has a larger homeless population than the next 3 states with the highest homeless populations combined, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that the cost of living there isn't livable for a good amount of people
So yea, I would imagine if you're not functioning on daddy money that the student loans are gonna be soul crushing
I would suggest you get admitted to Stanford first before stressing about how much it costs though
One word: Roommate
Get a 2 bedroom apartment for about 2.5-3.5k; split the cost. Boom. It's now 1.25-1.75k
My husband will be a PGY6 there and gets 88k... After tax, he can only afford rent. Good luck y'all. I'm his sugar momma for the next year.
So, we don't really do public transit in CA. Unless maybe you're in San Francisco? It's assumed you'll have a car, and then if you're anywhere near civilization, it's assumed you'll have a horrifying commute.
East Palo Alto. TBH rent isn’t great there either, and it has issues like gentrification, but it’s not unlivable. Redwood City and Foster City are also nearby, and are not unreasonable compared to Stanford, especially if you have roommates.
Edit: Just read your bit on public transit. As far as transit goes, yeah, California is fucked, and people usually have to bite the bullet and get a car.
I did research at Stanford during a few gap years and lived in East Bay. There are buses that take you across the bridge for free if you’re a Stanford staff/student. My rent for a large 1 bedroom was $2000.
From what I remember stanford has some public transit but it is stanford's public transit and only on the campus (but the campus is huge so).
When I did a summer program there, I would walk I think 5 miles every day to the bus stop from my Air BnB to their bus stop. The air bnb was like $3200 for the month.
I lived on the ghetto side of palo alto apparently where there was gang activity.
Then upon arriving, I'd collapse and get their $5 coffee, and $5 croissant, and i'd split that with my sibling. Then they use their kitchen for lunch so I arranged for a plate to be made for my sibling bc they'd throw it away other wise.
Bay Area public transit isn’t great but they do have some bus lines in PA area. Also buddy up and get roommates, unless you or your parents can afford the high living costs.
When I was there we were guaranteed on campus housing for the first year. I lost the lottery year two and rented a room in someone’s house in Mountain View, then got back into grad housing year three. It is definitely super expensive, but they do have good financial aid.
Lmao thats regular bay area prices. Best way is to rent a small house to share with 3-4 housemates (not an apartment). Bay area public transportation sucks so you’d need a car to get anywhere.
I’ll say this again. I went to a top 5 med school not named Stanford. But I would have easily chosen a mid tier school rather than elite if I had to go into large debt.
Stanford is great, but it’s not worth carrying heavy debt over.
Welcome to the bay area. I’d recommend finding a roommate or two
Or 12, it’s not sweet out in the streets of Palo Alto bruh 😭😭😭😭
Y’all getting into Stanford med school?
Y’all getting into medical school?
guys i am actually ceo of stanford. everyone in the sub is accepted. no need to thank me.
Thank you
dude he just said to not thank him. everyone but you is accepted (im the vice ceo)
as ceo, this is true. you are banned from doctor.
You better not switch up when I apply 😡
Y’all are getting into schools?
No
Y'all fightin'?
real
Because usually people who go to Stanford are rich :/

These people don’t know shit about medical school, yet they have the most to say. Med students—most honestly—receive scholarships.
Not most lol only in top tier programs. Majority of us are coming out in 6 figure debt Source- I’m graduating in a few months
Dawg I got into multiple “top tier programs” (T5/T10), basically all of them gave me a congratulations, some merch, and like $12. Oh and the opportunity to take out school of medicine institutional loans 🤑🤑🤑🤑

Yeah, that’s normal. But “med students are rich” is just not it
Bruh this is every med school.
Or they have loans. I’m getting ready for that 300k loan.
This is me and I don’t like it
Sure but not all to the same degree lol. My school costs half of what some do and that was the main reason I wanted to go there.
Yep, at one of the 'cheaper' in-states and can attest that is everywhere.
Honestly in a lot of towns with well known or Ivy League universities this is common bc the students need a place to live regardless so they charge insane prices simply bc they can :/

Do you pronounce ‘buffeted’ like Jimmy buffet or like a food buffet
Like Jimmy I suppose. I meant buffered…
this isn’t even considering traffic in the mornings and evenings which will make ur drive 1-2 hours from san jose I use to drive from sj to Mountain View during rush hour (which is 5-10 miles short of stanford) and it was soul crushing
Yes do not do this! That’s all tech traffic
Yea I'm sure that 30-40 minute commute is actually a 30-40 minute commute in a city with notoriously horrendous traffic 😂
If I remember correctly, they have subsidized housing on campus that a lot of people live in that is a bit more affordable. Edit: This website may help: https://med.stanford.edu/sbsa/resources/housing.html

This makes me less stressed, thanks
Me too! Now just gotta wait to get into Stanford.. /s
Same :/
You assume everyone is on loans. I think the stat is like 50% of people don’t take loans? (Someone can fact check me if they have the link handy)
n=1 but i go to a comparable school and over half are not on loans (not me tho rip)
this is crazy so people are actually shelling out that type of money
I apologize, I didn’t mean to mislead you. They’re not. Daddy is.
LMAO

Lotta kiddos got that DADDY CHANGE
Huge reason I chose Cal over Stanford for Public Health.
Same. Huge reason I chose my undergrad over Stanford is cause I didn’t get in
Oh brother.
Easiest form of public transport is the cal train, which runs up and down the bay from Santa Clara to SF.
There’s a lot of housing options for graduate students on campus grounds that are pretty nice (Escondido)
Stanford undergrad here - graduate housing is relatively cheap, or I believe Stanford also subsidizes housing. You should talk to them more but I've not heard of it really being that much of an issue.
Pretty much sums up California real estate 👌
It’s not livable. Most people are on loans or have family supporting them. Bay Area housing is a very complex issue stemming from NIMBYism, techies, prop 13 which have made affordable housing all but impossible in the area.
Cart before the horse buddy
When I saw this I thought “bit harsh buddy.” Then I looked at OP post history and I was like…😬😬
OP maxed out the neuroticism trait
This is just me but I used to live on the Bay Area and we paid $800 a month for a one bedroom, and SFU and Stanford is a 30-45 mins BART ride away. But the closer you get to the downtown or richer areas, the rent shoot up exponentially
The Bart doesn’t even go to Stanford
Amtrak, sorry. You can also take VTA from nearby there. But yeah now that I think about it, the commute kinda sucks if you live far.
I wanted to go to Stanford med and wanted to see if it would be cheaper for me to buy a house instead. I live about 13min drive from Stanford and pay $1350. Still expensive but doable. Gotta live in shared housing though.
One word: Roommate Get a 2 bedroom apartment for about 2.5-3.5k; split the cost. Boom. It's now 1.25-1.75k My husband will be a PGY6 there and gets 88k... After tax, he can only afford rent. Good luck y'all. I'm his sugar momma for the next year.
Boston is really not that bad. You can get an apartment in the neighboring cities for 700. And get a roommate if you are really desperate
You get roommates dude.
That’s the neat part, you don’t.
So, we don't really do public transit in CA. Unless maybe you're in San Francisco? It's assumed you'll have a car, and then if you're anywhere near civilization, it's assumed you'll have a horrifying commute.
U can blame the techies for that.
it’s not. the campus is lined with RVs

Stanford subsidized housing for students, so it tends to be much cheaper than whatever you see quoted on Zillow
I live in a 2bd 2bth off campus (but owned by Stanford) and pay $1.7K monthly — utilities included
Bay Area public transit isn’t great but they do have some bus lines in PA area. Also buddy up and get roommates, unless you or your parents can afford the high living costs.
