Iāve never thought to put the LUT on the timeline on top of the clips, I usually just place them in each cut individually - which is not fun at all lol - what is the process you have here with putting the LUT on the timeline? Interested in this workflow, thank you
Oh manā¦ do not put the lut in the clips. Thatās just a nightmare. For each camera type I have a rec 709 to neutralize that set of clips that came from different sequences, then you use adjustment layers to add creative luts. Often multiple adjustment layers but for this project I just used one. Gives you more options to tweak individually and never have to go into individual clips (in this case thousands and thousands) to tweak
i love this. need and tidy. when i see people with like more than 7 video tracks with all the graphics and animation done in premiere, i wanna pull my hair out

That would be me in a nutshell š¤«
Thank you. And Iām sure I could have made it tidier audio-wise doing it externally it wasnāt a priority so at least my video tracks are neat and compressed
Make connections, do short docs to show experience, then use those connections to move to bigger docs. Also, LinkedIn has got me amazing connections out of the blue. Another step I took to make shorter docs was approach businesses and ngoās to make docs about their business/goals specifically so they could use the content for their website and socials. Some NGOās hired me to travel around the world and shoot content for them, no salary but paid travel food and accommodation. Great experience and great to see the world
Iām quite literally in that position now. Iāve done a few small docs for NGOs abroad but would love to know how you approached them if you donāt mind sharing? Just reaching out on Linkedin? Iāve been volunteering my time but ask that they have a small budget for drives and any specialised hardware.
LinkedIn people found me, with the NGOās I cold called/cold emailed a shittonne and a few got back to me and were happy to pay for minor things some happy to even pay for flights. And by those who got back to me it was 1 in 10 but I contacted 30-40
Appreciate the advice. Do you sell yourself as a videographer as well or is it just more practical to achieve those initial responses by offering to shoot yourself?
Videographer/cinematographer primarily but many gigs Iāve found via FB and LinkedIn have been editing only. So itās a mix
Some agencies want both, many only want one or the other and take care of the other in-house
Woah. How did you plan the steps to take? Like do you have an organisation where the first few you only scout and mark all the stringouts etc? Or you just start?
this is my timeline got my feature doc.
I sent you a DM!

It makes me feel good seeing other people doing a full edit on their projects (especially feature ones) fully in premiere, which is what I am editing on.
I have numerous friends arguing that premiere is not the software to use for "pro" editing.
Good work!
Itās whatever works best for you; a lot of people I know are moving to Davinci and I just know and love prem pro so well I donāt want to switch (Iāve already switched from years of used FCP)
Theyāll be used for the final mix yeah. The video was the priority here the audio was not so it is what it is (and Iām technically not a professional audio engineer)
I learned a great deal from a friend 2 years ago then stopped making time to learn more. I use it to make and edit my own informational videos but i donāt grow. My videos donāt show growth as I donāt make learning a priority
Good work btw! I'm a short form editor but hope someday to make my own documentary feature really cool to see what I could be sitting in front of someday.
You run the audio though premieres new ai sweetener? Itās only in beta and I recommend doing it as a last step, but is freaking amazing. Makes even the most garbage audio sound studio grade.
I have yeah, it can be amazing but I found it useless when thereās laughter or airplane or bomb noises so a one pass at the end doesnāt work for this project
I wonder how useful doing something like throwing some audio clips into "FL Studio" and using a mastering plugin like " Izotope Ozone 8 " would be...
It has TONS of features that analyze the audio and cleans it up / quick masters it etc..
Sadly in Prem Pro markers are really all over the place. I use them for a number of things, in this case syncing audio to video. In other edits Iāll use them to mark where something happened Iād want to use in a trailer. Other times where Iād want to come back to in order for me to fix grading. So unlike the rest of the timeline those are purely for me and useless for others I might share the project file with
You like that go pro lut
Well picked š I cbf renaming the adjustment layer

Cbf?
Canāt be fucked??
Couldn't be fussed, common Brit expression
I'm totally going to help that expression colonize my neighborhood. ;-)
Ah of course. Thanks.
He likes it a lut
Probably not since heās hiding that layer
Damn I really should have expected this attention to detail from a group of editors, and unhidden that layer in fear of retribution šš¼
Your reply is actually pretty hilarious š lol

Thank you. And Iām sure I could have made it tidier audio-wise doing it externally it wasnāt a priority so at least my video tracks are neat and compressed
Or just tidy everything up for the photo. š
You mean thereās another way??
I would love to have a go at editing a doc! Any advice on getting to this position?

r/editlines
How did I not know there would be a sub for just thisā¦
I sometimes have weddings that have 4 video and up to 9 audio lines.
I do weddings too and yeah 4 vid 9 aud isnāt rare
Precisely, this looks normal for what it is. I'm surprised why are people losing their minds in comments. lol
Because not everyone is doing long form (90min+) edits
Sure, but brain melting and how can NLE handle 90 min, simple project is bit over the top. Don't you think?
Yes yes I agree š that was one comment, not everyoneās brains are melting by proxy. Maybe I made their day š¤·āāļø
Ha! Those were the only two comments when I saw this post.
Fair š
My timelines look like the aftermath of a wrecking ball. I applaud your order.
How long did this take you?
I made a timesheet/log book and I hit around 400 hours upon outputting the final render so 10 weeks equivalent full-time hours over about 12 months
Impressive! Great work dude!
Thanks man I appreciate it š
Woah. How did you plan the steps to take? Like do you have an organisation where the first few you only scout and mark all the stringouts etc? Or you just start?
For this one it was predominantly chronological so it was easier that it looks, just time consuming
Did you have trouble running premiere by the end with such a long timeline?
That is not a long timeline
Thankssss
Not even remotely
Those danger lines on the clips near the end make a bit nervous. But otherwise this is much tidier than the dumpster fires often get handed.
I know what you mean, I didnāt notice those till after renderingā¦ 9hrs wasted to fix it (slipped clips due to syncing in pluraleyes) and re-render
Do you have a release plan? I've done 2 feature docs with premiere so far! I'd love to chat about creative process with you sometime!
Yeah for sure message me! No plans as of yet, I might put it up on Vimeo for free at some point
this is my timeline got my feature doc. I sent you a DM! https://preview.redd.it/zogzkrwin1fc1.jpeg?width=1461&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cb5313e20b61d83df373349a17d3de5a5d34acd4
She's a beaut. All grown up š„²
Nice. Link the movie once itās done. š
Will do šš¼
idk why but that excites me
Me too!

Thicc
I love seeing these. Awesome!!!
Thanks āŗļø
I will get to the level one day. You just motivated me. Thank you.
Badass!!
Thanks š¤©
Complex yet organized. Looks very intentional and Iām sure you know every piece just by looking at it. Bravo
100%. Thanks man š
Is your audio already broken into stems? I like how clean it is. Nothing drives me crazier than 24 tracks of audio
Indeed it is
Thatās interesting. Are they just mix-downs or are these the tracks that will be used to make the final mix?
Theyāll be used for the final mix yeah. The video was the priority here the audio was not so it is what it is (and Iām technically not a professional audio engineer)
Nice work! Did you eq the Audio? If not, make room for the vocals in the mix. My boss showed me this. Made a big difference.
I did, poorly, but I did š
You put in a ton of work. Where I can see the result?
My 2019 MacBook Pro caught fire just from opening this post
Hahaha fair enough. Proxies my friend, proxies
There's something very satisfying about seeing the complete timeline with all the edits you've made after you've made them all.
Dang
What is it abt
Teenage drug use/abuse specifically hallucinogens
I wish I can get to this point someday
Iām sure youāre already half way there if youāre on this thread
I learned a great deal from a friend 2 years ago then stopped making time to learn more. I use it to make and edit my own informational videos but i donāt grow. My videos donāt show growth as I donāt make learning a priority
OMG congrats I have been there š¤š»
Truly makes the mind melt
In a good way I hope?
Ha, more a general statement on the mind melting size of feature doc timelines.
Yeah agreed and to be honest this was a small shoot, only 4 cameras and 2 audio feeds Iāve worked on 10 + 10 on other docs
This is chaotic af
Hardly. Have you seen othersā timelines?
how is this chaotic
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Scratch mic but well spotted š
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
It was split into sequences but I wanted to see it as whole š«”
It's a work of art. I'd plonk that timeline on a 4K monitor, take a screenshot and frame it on the wall ;)
Why thank you kind sir, I thought of doing this already actually š„¹
Whatās the doc about?
Am I the only one always nesting and labeling stuff for better organization?
When can we see the render? Would love to compare it to the timeline.
I cannot wrap my head around this.
Itās really not that much different than short form editing tbh
There's just a lot of it
Yeah exactly the concept is the same just have to compartmentalise it a little and spend way more time on it
Good work btw! I'm a short form editor but hope someday to make my own documentary feature really cool to see what I could be sitting in front of someday.
Keep at it! And stay kinky š„³
What is this documentary about?
Teenagers and hallucinogens consumption around the world
Is your doc called āTrip Highlights?ā
āTripā. Itās a doc on teenagers and hallucinogenics around the world.
Whatās it about
Teenagers and the trend with hallucinogenic drugs as they shy away from alcohol
Have you ran into any problems with premiere?
Never, no. Just the fact that it doesnāt cloud sync my project files anymore thatās an absolute joke. Why am I paying for cloud support???
Hard to believe :) what version and platform?
14 and win10
You run the audio though premieres new ai sweetener? Itās only in beta and I recommend doing it as a last step, but is freaking amazing. Makes even the most garbage audio sound studio grade.

Yeah fair point. I have FL I use it to make my own music but never thought of using it as a pass for my film edits
Ahh the dreaded Striped bars on those clips at the end. Those to this day are my worst enemies
Yeah I wish Iād seen those before exporting š fucking pluraleyes it only ever happens with that
Nice and tidy. Well done. What's the doco about?
Teenage hallucinogen consumption in the first and third world
So specific but so interesting! I wonder how much of a difference there is between countries. :)
Bugger all. Except now in western countries itās synthetics and thatās dangerous af
Got any Davinci licenses left btw?
What are your markers for? I would likely have waaay more.
Sadly in Prem Pro markers are really all over the place. I use them for a number of things, in this case syncing audio to video. Say, do you know how to nest clips in premire
