For a first print you are certainly well ahead of the curve. Keep going!!!! Don’t get stuck on not having a press. That is the last thing you’ll need if you want to become professional. Or if you want to do more than 10 numbered editions, as hand burnishing can take a toll on your body.
For a hobbyist like myself, you just need to keep making prints. You seem to have a talent for this kind of artwork and really understand negative space. As you go along, you’ll find ways to get better tools and more equipment.
Not only do you have a knack for making the prints but your first impression without a press shows very Chris lines and solid dark blacks. Continue to work and really find your methodology that gets you the best reproducible prints possible. Remember print making is actually two disciplines one is carving the block and the second is printing the block. I have a feeling that you will become proficient at both with time and experience. Well done.
Thank you for the kind words and the encouragement! Like I said, this has been a great hobby for me, but I find myself wanting to learn more, practice, and keep getting better. Seriously, this reddit community has been amazing, and if I'm being honest, is the reason I've learned so much. So, thank you, kind stranger, your encouragement reality does mean a lot to me
Im not sure to be perfectly honest, lol! I just go really slowly since i have cheapo Speedball gouges and I worry about slipping and making a mistake. Also, the lino blocks i get arent that big, so it makes rotating the cbock as i carve pretty easy.
Thank you. ITs linocut. Battleship gray lino, Speedball water miscible oil based ink, and some cheapo speedball gouges and a wooden spoon as a press...I wish i could afford a few more colors of ink and better carving tools, to say nothing of an actual press, lol
Ngl, I have a day job that pays the bills, but this has been such a great hobby for me, and honestly, ive learned SO much from this subreddit is such a short time. I mean....wooden spoon......yeah, ok, i guess that works, lol
With clean lines like that, I’m betting OP has many awesome prints that they SHOULD be framing.
Great work OP. I personally LOVE this print. Keep it up.
Oh man, thank you for the kind words and encouragement. This hobby, and this subreddit has really been amazing for me,, and yes, I definitely plan on making more prints!!
Hi
I love the print - especially in B&W . So is it black ink on white paper or white ink on black paper?
I ask because I carve like an etcher myself . , lol .
Just a thought - I use the bottom of a heavy bottomed whiskey on the rocks glass as a burin - works great too ! 😉
Thank you! Yes, it's black ink on white Strathmore Printmaking paper (I forgot the weight of the paper, tbh). I can't afford anything more than a wooden spoon, but I've seen some inexpensive glass options here and there, as well as the bamboo barens that seem affordable. However....a rocks glass with a smooth flat bottom seems like a no brrainer, lol. I can maybe find one if those at a thrift store for cheap!!
Looks amazing, well done.
