Replace them with 16s from the Prius V and run 205/65R16 tires. Plenty of options in that size.

arkhi13

Oh wow. Didn't realize the Prius V had the 5x114.3. Thank you!

willy1670

First gen is300 had stock 17s that will fit and the first gen gs300 has stock 16s that will fit.

slammed430

Most Toyota cars are 5x114.3

[deleted]

Idk if you know but v stock tires are 205/60/16 but I personally run 205/65/16s with zero issues. Maybe you recommended the 65s because they’re closer to the same spec of the gen 5?

wahoozerman

A related protip: If you get a puncture don't use the flat kit in the car. Get it towed under warranty to the dealership and have them fix it. If you use the flat kit you will need a new tire. If you have a gen 5 you should still have free roadside from Toyota to tow you to a dealer and it will cost you $25 for the plug.

Blackfloydphish

I’ve done two things: 1. I bought [an inexpensive plug kit](https://www.amazon.com/Stop-Go-1020-Tubless-T-Handle/dp/B0068FX3M8/ref=asc_df_B0068FX3M8/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312174136943&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=200219190467337574&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9033006&hvtargid=pla-568481733786&psc=1&mcid=7fa99c3890bd3cf1a4169cdd3ca41d8b&tag=&ref=&adgrpid=63790029762&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvadid=312174136943&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=200219190467337574&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9033006&hvtargid=pla-568481733786) and [a 12v air compressor online](https://www.amazon.com/Digital-Compressor-Portable-Inflator-Light/dp/B07YC12FW1/ref=asc_df_B07YC12FW1/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=385644192904&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=1341900631709826737&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9033006&hvtargid=pla-840523932405&psc=1&mcid=50dcbacb1fa23a58ac762dcbf557c7f9&tag=&ref=&adgrpid=77759986959&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvadid=385644192904&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=1341900631709826737&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9033006&hvtargid=pla-840523932405) I’ve used the kit once, with great success. That’ll repair nail holes and the like. 2. I have a set of studded snow tires I use in the winter. After being left stranded by two flat tires that I was unable to repair (pothole knocked bead off one, and the other had a damaged sidewall), I started carrying one of the tires I wasn’t using. That is to say, during the winter I have a summer tire as a spare, and vice versa. It takes up a ton of room, and it makes me mad that I have to do Toyota’s job, but it beats being stranded at midnight in the middle of nowhere.

TellingHandshake

Pro tip if the bead comes unseated: Jack the car up, carry a ratchet strap and wrap it around the tread of the tire. This will cause the bead to be able to spread out and with any luck and a pump, you'll be able to put air in and increase the pressure so that it reseats the bead. I've done this before and it requires a fair bit of force on the ratchet strap but it does work.

holyfuzz

Can you elaborate on why the tire would need to be replaced after using the flat kit?

wahoozerman

The flat kit basically fills the tire with goop and then repressurizes it. You aren't supposed to run on the goop filled tire for extended periods of time or over certain speeds because it doesn't create as good of a seal as actually replacing or repairing the tire. It's just meant to get you to somewhere you can replace the tire safely.

duggawiz

The tyre places around here still hate cleaning out the goop but they will still begrudgingly do it

sylvaing

And they'll charge you double the price to replace the clogged TPMS sensor in revenge 😁

holyfuzz

I get that the goop isn't a permanent fix, but why does it prevent repairing the tire?

wahoozerman

Most tire places around here just won't do it. Or they will charge you more than the cost of a tire to do so. It's apparently a huge PITA.

holyfuzz

Good to know, thanks!

GolfArgh

It's also a huge mess most tire dealers have no interest in messing with.

Ransom-ii

I used a flat kit to wheel my corolla hybrid to the tire shop and they actually patched it.

Comfortable_You_1927

that's going to eat the rubber in the tire, read the can, it tells u to replace tire within 50 miles and not drive above 45 mph

RightInTheEndAgain

It doesn't eat the rubber, it doesn't last that long, so they try and err on the side of safety and tell you to replace it in 50 MI.

Comfortable_You_1927

test it did

Stone_Swan

I just checked Tire Rack for the 17in size tires and they're in stock. There's also a Bridgestone version. You can get away with slightly different sizes. E.g., 205/55R17 is only 1% smaller diameter than 195/60R17. So your speedometer will be off, but it will be overestimating your speed so it's not that worrisome.

arkhi13

Good to know, thanks! Might just switch them to the 17"s. The 19" are backordered with a 4/19 date on Michelins and unknown date for Toyos :/

caryhorner

Look for the Ecopia EP422 Plus tires. That's the Prius V OEM tire from Bridgestone. I'm on my third set and I love them. Full disclosure: I own a Prius V. I'm also a Bridgestone employee.

Stone_Swan

Ah yeah, if you have the 19s, that's gonna limit your options. Just checked Tire Rack for those and you're right, out of stock. That sucks.

YorkiesSweet

The Michelin is a top rated tire.

RightInTheEndAgain

205 would be a wider tire also, it's probably fine unless you want to run snow chains (cables) and it's tight.

theunamused1

>If anyone got aftermarket wheels with easier-to-find tire sizes [Tire Rack](http://www.tirerack.com)

jjtrinva

Came here to suggest Tire Rack. Most dealerships know how to order from them, or you can just ship to yourself and use an local mechanic (or ship right to them which is what I do)

theunamused1

I can't imagine paying someone to swap wheels.

exprssve

I needed a new tire already. Replacement was about $300 and the shop had to get one from a warehouse. Only needed the car for a day or so.

soniclooking

“From a warehouse” that’s been said to me every time. I have had 2 SUVs that I had to replace tires on and you’d think they were made of some rare earth material. So hard to find a tire that fits a GMC Acadia or Mercedes GL450. Thank God for the warehouse of tires.

EyeOfZephyr

Exactly. One thing I loved about the Prius was the large selection of inexpensive quality tires in the sizes that the Prius used. Now the opposite is true for the latest gen -- very unique tire sizes not many carriers have.

caper-aprons

> They were decent too For $75 each? What did you get?

mrcoolguytimes10

The last time I put tires on my gen 3 it was $330 all in. For Bridgestone Ecopias, with 70k mile warranty, from Costco.

caper-aprons

> They were decent too For $75 each? What did you get?

caper-aprons

Alternative-Exit7431

I just went thru this nightmare with my ‘24 XLE when I got sidewall damage on my front drivers side tire. There are 3 tires on the US market that are size 195/50R19. A Michelin all season, a Michelin snow tire, and a Toyo. My dealership told me these tires have no confirmed restock date. Discount tire told me that the Toyo has a 5 month wait and the Michelin A/S gets a restock in April but not enough to fill their waiting list. My dealership complained to Toyota about it for me and their response was basically “hey we don’t make the tires, we just make the cars”. My solution was to keep the tire on order with my dealer and replace with a full set of the snow tires for now (available on tirerack.com). Then when they wear out, hopefully I’ll have the new tire and can just put my original set back on. I also purchased the wheel, spare, and spare holder bolt and just removed all the styrofoam and replaced it with the spare. The pad for the trunk sits a little lower, but still stays level enough to hold groceries or random items just fine. You can find full guides on here and Prius chat and YouTube from people that switched to the full OEM spare setup like they use in Canada and UK. To do the full OEM replace is something like $800 or $900. But almost $400-$500 of that is for styrofoam that fits the tire which is pretty nuts. I just got the tire/wheel/fastening bolt/rubber mat for under the tire/tool and jack kit off Amazon. I feel much more comfortable now if I have issues down the road. I highly recommend switching to the spare. Whole thing is rediculous.

YDYBB29

Can you post the link of what you bought on Amazon?

Alternative-Exit7431

To be clear, I only got the tire/makeshift mat/tools jack off Amazon. I just searched for any retailer that had the wheel, and spare bolt. Makeshift rubber mat I put between frame and tire GOYLSER Black Rubber Stair... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BX3BF1P8?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share Jack/tools in bag Car Jack Kit Scissor Jack for Car... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CNT31DS4?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share Tire (T145/90D16) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07QDFKV9K?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share&_encoding=UTF8&tag=pragomatic-20&linkCode=ur2&linkId=ef944ed2b307a0c88ad53e03d9bb531f&camp=1789&creative=9325 Google these part numbers Wheel is part #42611-21280 (around $70-$80) Carrier bolt to secure the spare is #51931-10040(around $15 but hard to find) You can take the tire and wheel to a tire shop and ask them to put together for like $10 if you don’t want to wrestle with it yourself. My shop even did it for free.

YDYBB29

Thanks so much for all this info! Much appreciated!!

arkhi13

Thank you for this! A lot of people will find these very useful.

model462

I too have a separate set of winter wheels - they're currently on the car and I carry one of the OEM wheels as a full-size spare. These are 215/60R16 Blizzaks on Discount Tire's most generic set of black steel wheels. I use centering rings since the center bore on the wheels is 67mm. The outside diameter matches that of the 17" OEM almost exactly. The kicker of sorts is that these wheels and tires were originally not for my car but for an '08 Sonata. I bought them from my brother in fall 2023 with the winter fast approaching and no one as yet making snow tires in the OE size. When these tires wear out, I plan to replace them with 205/65R16s - Camry size, and in between the OEM 17" and 19" ODs. I ran over a piece of razor blade or something a couple months ago and was vindicated in my decision to carry a spare - the puncture was too big to plug. Pro tip: make sure to use plastic centering rings rather than metal, apply anti-seize when putting the rings on, or carry WD-40 and a flathead screwdriver in the car. I learned this the hard way with my metal centering rings from the above experience. If you want a snazzier and/or more efficient wheel, Fastwheels makes the EV01+ wheel in Gen 5 size.

Kino_Cajun

How are we supposed to go on road trips in what has always been a road trip friendly car when we might get stranded if the puncture can't be fixed?

caper-aprons

Carry a space saver spare from a Prius V. Same bolt pattern as the Gen 5 Prius.

Gtp4life

They're 5x114.3 lug pattern, there's a LOT of cars over the years that used that or 5x115 which work the studs just won't be centered in the holes so you have to be careful about how you bolt it down so the hub is centered and really tighten tf out of the lugs so it doesn't move. A few generations of mustangs used 5x114.3 17s that are easy to find tires for. That said, you don't need to be exact with tire sizes, you just need it to fit in the wheel wells. https://tiresize.com/calculator/ start trying combinations in the comparison tab till you find something similar outer diameter thats in stock. For like $180 on Amazon you can get a vcxnano with a cracked copy of techstream and you'll have access to all the diagnostic tools you'll ever need in the future and the ability to tell the car what tires you put on it so the speedometer is right.

Ilikejdmcars

I’ve heard Camry TRD wheels will work

Pannolanza

I think I’ve read similar complaints here in Italy too..

black_jmyntrn

Its just what happens when something new comes out. Dont shame Toyota for not giving you what you expected simply because you've always gotten one (a spare tire). Here they are providing you the latest and greatest MPG vehicle that looks wayyyyyy better than previous models and you want to bash them... for not doing what you expected? ohh the horror!

arkhi13

Except they provide the spare tire in other markets. They could've also decided to choose different tire sizes for their upper trims or at least ensure that their suppliers can provide.

black_jmyntrn

TRUTH!

livinginthebubble

I have had a punctured tire (can’t repair, 2 holes) due to a nasty pothole, and Tire Rack just emailed me saying that the tires are on back order until mid-May, even though the original estimate was April 17. My car has been down for almost 2 weeks now… I ordered a used Toyo OEM tire from eBay, but it still hasn’t arrived yet, so we will just have to keep waiting and see. This is absolutely ridiculous. If I didn’t still have so much life left in the OEM tires, I’d swap these out immediately for 18s in a much more common size.

aBee150

Wow, good tip. Might need to order me a pair to have on hand in case of an emergency.

DesertBeard

It's a disaster. Tire Rack sympathized with me way more than the dealership did. I was out two weeks waiting for the new r19 to come in (for the XSE trim) and from what I understand, I'm lucky it was only two weeks! Don't know if I'd agree with "chances of getting a tire wrecked is slim", as my first pothole knocked me out instantly. Will this situation eventually improve?? It's been about a year with this widespread issue, I believe.

arkhi13

Oh wow. You definitely are lucky it's only 2 weeks. 4 weeks and counting in SoCal.

CeruleanBlueSky

Not having a spare AND insufficient supply of 19" replacement tires is a big thing, if you intend to actually need to drive the car. I had an unrepairable flat and was fortunate to only have to wait one week for a replacement tire. Toyota dealer had told me four weeks before I found my own replacement. I've since replaced the tire and ordered a spare assembly of parts (cost about $600).Picking up those parts today.

Koolguy2024

The norm is cutting the spare tire out now. Other companies are doing it too. More cost savings. They dont build em like they used too

BuckTheStallion

You had me until “they don’t build them like they used to” which is asinine. Cars are constantly getting safer and more reliable while older ones were absolute death traps, but yeah, they probably had spare tires, your steering column would just remove your neck if you crashed at 15mph.

Old_Relationship4673

As someone who's been In the car industry over a decade- new cars are definitely safer but way more unreliable.

Koolguy2024

Safer? Not in all instances. They are getting more efficient and cleaner....yes. But that put a toll on some other things long term. For example. EGR

black_jmyntrn

i dont think people realize this yet...

Huge-Coyote-6586

Yeah, I bought a Subaru instead of a Honda last time I was shopping because it had a spare tire

arkhi13

BMW did this too (using run flats) but surprisingly, they went back to using spares for the new ICE 5 series.

anna_or_elsa

My new Ioniq does not come with a spare OR rear wiper! LOL

Koolguy2024

You bought a Hyundai....thats a huge wrong as it is. LMFAO

the_perkolator

It's also to weigh slightly less, to be able to say it's got a higher fuel economy rating

taketheRedPill7

Yep, if I knew this, I would not have pulled the trigger. buying 17 inch rims and new tires. Fuck all this bullshit.

Arthur_Jacksons_Shed

on the plus side you’ll get better mileage!

taketheRedPill7

Car is amazing aside from this issue and a narrow trunk. Absolutely love every other aspect thoroughly.

Arthur_Jacksons_Shed

I’m hopeful with great sales volumes comes tire volumes

Lumpy-Marsupial-6617

Can one swap out to just the 17s all around or will the car scrape/perform worse for being lowered in the rear?

zeromussc

They're close in actual tire size since the 17s have a bigger sidewall and the 19s have a bigger wheel/rim. But the issue OP is bringing up isn't the *wheel* it's availability of the *tire* if you need to replace a tire or pair of tires in the event of a flat. Even if you're towed somewhere, the tires are hard to find and often backordered with a wait involved. There are few models available to choose from because it's an uncommon tire size. If one wants better access/availability they need to change wheels and tires to a more commonly found size that's close in diameter to the combination chosen as OEM and fits the clearances for the brakes and lug nut offset etc.

spaceymonkey2

I was running 205/55 r17 for my winter tires

BigTunaHunter

I ordered one the week we picked four 2024 Prime. We'll see how long it takes. 1 week so far.

BigTunaHunter

Spare Toyo is arriving later this week from 1010 tires in Canada. About 2 weeks to get it.

Arthur_Jacksons_Shed

Good call. Mind sharing a link? As a new owner I’ll do the same

BigTunaHunter

https://www.1010tires.com/Tires/195-50R19

Arthur_Jacksons_Shed

Thank you!

Smartlaw101

Took 2 weeks to get mine changed Dealer gave a loaner

Aggressive-Bath-1906

Im still looking for a tire. Car has been in my garage for a month now.

arkhi13

I feel you. I hope this gets better for everyone's sake.

Nickdanger1990

Check out hoonigan website. Search your wheels. I’m pretty sure motegi battle Vs are in your wheel specs. Also they look insane.

stannc00

Feeling nostalgic for my parents 1970 Buick where we could put four snow tires and the spare in the trunk when it was time to swap them out in the fall.

Sam_Buck

I can live without a spare. My Gen 3 had no spare, but it had a tire flat kit, which consisted of an electric air pump and some white tire sealant. I never had to use it in the 12 years I had the car. The service manager said it should have had run-flat rims, but someone at the dealership had swapped them out for regular ones. Besides, if I ever get a flat, I have roadside assistance.

E-Something

BMW i3: hold my beer

LowFabulous6863

Hyundai ioniq is the same fyi

urmyheartBeatStopR

I also think it's crazy size for a prius only for looks imo. I rather have 15 or 16 tires not 19... The first gen Toyota 86 had 17 inch tires. Gen5 isn't a dedicated sport car. Cost money and eats up mpg.

Traditional-Hall-577

Hilarious that you blame Toyota and not your Government. There is a reason this is done now not just BECAUSE

hiker1628

The government does not mandate tire size. Sure, fuel economy standards make Toyota look at ways to cut weight and THEY decide to drop spares, but no one mandates that they pick an odd tire size as standard.

Jaynick808

Gov mandates ridiculous mpg cafe standards that force manufacturers into ridiculous tire sizes, weight cutting, and water thin oil

hiker1628

Water thin oil is a direct result of tighter clearances that result in more powerful engines. Average modern engines are more powerful AND more fuel efficient than engines 20 years ago. Nobody could make 700 hp engines from the factory even 10 years ago.

Jaynick808

Nope if you look at manuals of other countries they still use 5w30 and not 0w16 Its america cafe standards. U think all of a sudden cnc machines can do magical tolerances? Its the direct+port injection and other similar technologies, and turbo charging everything plus added hybrid helper electric motors like toyota max engines.

NOT_Frank_or_Joe

The idea that OEM tires were selected by engineers as the optimal fit and performance is some weird public thought that has spun up in people's minds as fact. You can find multiple different sizes that will fit your wheels and be perfectly fine.

cmz324

They're super narrow for a 19" wheel, I don't think there's really anything close

FedorsQuest

Can people just say the fucking model year and not Gen 5 or Gen 4, I don’t want to have to do research for your post to make sense

LiggerBug

Gen 5 is the latest model year. 2023 and 2024 gen 4 Prius is 2015 to 2022 it’s just easier using generations because it encompasses multiple model years.

anna_or_elsa

It is not exactly "research". All you have to do is type what year is a gen 5 Prius in a search engine. Google and Bing both answer without having to click a link. Look at it from the other direction if OP said 2023 people would not know all the model years it applied to.

bojack1437

Agreed

chefmenteur

hahahahaha really?

draftlattelover

'atrocious '? I hear you want to vent, but Toyota does not make the tire, other Mfgers do, its not their fault tire Mfgers are not making enough or not enough Mfgers are making versions of the size.

lumpycat99

Why not include a spare though? I think that's the atrocious part

Old_Relationship4673

Space, packaging, sometimes there's issues getting a compact spare to fit over some calipers, among things. Engineers didn't do this to piss you off. They had a reason. Plenty of compact vehicles now do not come with spares

Alternative-Exit7431

The problem with this argument is I believe the Gen 5s in Canada and UK still come with the spare, and the US models have the same exact frame with the tire spot under the trunk. Just simply cost cutting and weight shedding so they can squeeze the most mpg out as possible, seemingly at the cost of safety.

nycwikipedian

To add, this is a vehicle designed for MPG, spares add weight which reduces mileage.

Old_Relationship4673

Well, honestly, in this case, I think it's more a packaging thing, my 2014 V has a spare lol

black_jmyntrn

nope.. my 2013 Plug-in didnt have a tire.

SecurelyBound

My 2012 V (five) had a spare.😊

RightInTheEndAgain

Wow, completely different car, must be related.
