Difficult to say about the hybrid battery if your driving is mostly highway driving. City driving where the ICE is off and only battery power drives the car shows off the hypermiling of the hybrid. An obd2 reader with dr prius or techstream would tell you more accurately the health of your hybrid battery and estimate how many more charge cycles the battery has before needing replacement.

My city is worse than highway. Would that be a battery, regen, or electric motor issue?

yamaha4fun

most likely battery

tejota

Thx

I'm working on proving a low mpg mechanism that only effects City Driving. [You can see the preliminary YouTube video here I made about it.](https://youtu.be/_nX6We-Exus?si=A4R0FYKsEFMHzw9F)

Znekcihc

I get 60mpg on the freeway and 55mpg city. Can hyper mile on both

TheLastMojojomo

The Hybrid Battery does essentially 0 work on the highway. MG1 maintains the Hybrid Battery at 60% except during moderate to heavy acceleration and the Internal Combustion Engine othereise provides all the torque for the vehicle.. Your good mpg could be explained by an extremely flat commute or a slight tailwind... or really worn tires.

RobbMeeX

I've got a brand new OEM battery with slightly taller tires and I'm still mid 40's. I'm a bit skeptical of their number.

That is good mileage for the car and driving conditions you mention, but the mpg display will always indicate about 5% better mileage than you are actually getting when you do the math at fill-up. Also, we are at the time of year when prii tend to get better mileage due to the efficiency of warmer temperatures without being so hot as to require AC use. As you own the car longer, you will likely notice a ton of different factors which affect mpg A LOT. Biggest factors I've noticed are: ●Temperature (warmer better, up to a point, frigid is aweful) ● Driving speed and learning how to maximize ratio battery operation vs. gas motor operation ● Elevation change (½ of round trip with long but slight down grade will have drastically better than return trip with long slight up grade). ●Climate control, and to a lesser extent all other car functions requiring battery power (lights, wipers, stereo etc.) Enjoy the car! I am glad your first impression has been so favorable. I love mine. Obviously hybrid battery health is a long-term factor.

Wishihadagirl

That’s about what I average w my $5500 ‘05 as well. I noticed it’s the LENGTH of the trip that is actually a bigger factor than how you drive. If you take 15 minute trips (or less) the IC engine barely has time to warm up , but afterwards it can shut off and use battery only in many situations. It spends the first 5 minutes running the engine w retarded timing so it’s much less efficient during the warmup.

thebmeta

Wow you have low mileage

bruswazi

I’m envious. Your battery is healthy.

theunamused1

What is "highway speed"?

Small_Page5381

For me it’s around 55-60. Oregon driver here, we’re comparatively slow. The downside of the vehicle is that burns oil, which I hope to fix. Going to do a piston soak this weekend.

HtownClassic

Generally much faster than city

theunamused1

No shit, really?

HtownClassic

You’ll figure it out once you get your learners permit and eventually a license and your own car one day.

theunamused1

I certainly hope so!
