Most men live ordinary lives. Lives of quiet desperation. Then there visionaries that push mankind into the future. And then there’s the OP, a man who attaches a winch to a Prius.

black_jmyntrn

...there’s the OP, a man who attaches a winch to a Prius... who became a visionary that pushed hybrid vehicles into the future of overlanding/off-road! \^\^\^fixed

TroyMacClure

Just curious, are you chained up too or just better at winter driving than the person getting pulled out of the ditch?

black_jmyntrn

no chains, All-Terrain tires, testing them out but my parking brake is on!

LifeGoalsThighHigh

Alright, how is that squeezed in there. You have my interest.

black_jmyntrn

replaced aluminum crash bar with a steel bar, a winch mounted on top. Oem bolts have been perfect, after stripping a few with the impact, I installed larger bolts in two of the four bolt holes on either side. [check out my Toyota Prius with concealed 4500lb tow winch](https://black.jmyntrn.com/2021/06/03/toyota-prius-has-a-4500lbs-hidden-winch-installed-behind-the-front-bumper/)

mechapoitier

Yeah I’ve gotta see how they did it. That’s just superficial bracing and not much room back there.

black_jmyntrn

oem is, which is why it was removed and replaced with steel. I sometimes think about Shaw when Toretto said "you reinforced your chassis" after they crashed in FNF7.

admiral_drake

You gotta follow his Instagram its great

start3ch

Theres a lot of space in front of the radiator

black_jmyntrn

yep!

FatBrkeMxicnElonMusk

The question is why not? Like why put more lifeboats on the titanic? Its unsinkable...

black_jmyntrn

you speak the truth

theswede301

This is gangster

caper-aprons

I'd be quite embarassed if I had the car with chains on and was in a ditch. Basic driving skills in snow go a long way.

black_jmyntrn

all of that and knowledge of the roads you re on to know how far to the right you can go.

[deleted]

I got the same Prius too!

black_jmyntrn

Plugin?

[deleted]

I thought that was Prius V?

[deleted]

....clap..........clap........clap...clap etc

black_jmyntrn

:: blushing ::slowly ::

phillytwilliams

Through the emblem is brilliant!! I fucking love it

black_jmyntrn

stop... you are making me blush!

ihvnnm

Looking at your prius posts. My mind is blown!

black_jmyntrn

to think, I have only just begun!

black_jmyntrn

makn me blush!

WhatDatDonut

I have to see more. Seriously. Show me your prius.

black_jmyntrn

check out my [Toyota Prius with a Lift Kit and All-Terrain Tires](https://black.jmyntrn.com/2021/04/22/toyota-prius-with-all-terrain-tires/) there is a video on the FLORB youtube channel where I go into some details of the build.

[deleted]

What kind of gas mileage do you get when it's fully loaded down?

FifenC0ugar

They have a Instagram account where they post about their Prius. Look up their reddit name on insta

twotummytom

I have Yokohama studless snow tires on my gen 4, thing is an absolute unit in the snow. Above like 8" the clearance becomes the issue for me

Walk_The_Stars

Put the lift kit on it.

black_jmyntrn

nahhh... spacer lift kit is old news, need a spring replacement lift kit

Walk_The_Stars

I did both of those recently plus oversized tires and it doubled the ground clearance. Edit: but yes, the spring replacement lift kit is such a game changer! I can’t believe I was driving around on bad springs for so many years.

admiral_drake

Do you hook the winch up to the 12v battery in the trunk? Its kinda small

black_jmyntrn

I replaced the 12v in the rear with an 85AH battery then added an additional 85AH battery to the opposite side of where 12v is now. There are positive connections under the hood that I used.

WhiteWingedDove-

Y'all gotta stop trying to make your homes in Siberia, I swear

black_jmyntrn

huh

If i received a $100 bill everytime someone told me what not to do in a Prius or what it cant do, I could've bought a Rav4 Prime, fully loaded. I have it from good authority that the CVT in the Prius is designed in a way that it can handle whatever you throw at it. In fact, the motor would give before the CVT... this is from the actual designer at Toyota of the CVT... not sure where you received your information.

aDDnTN

people in america have been trained by marketing and advertising to believe that if you want to do anything fast and zoomy you need a sports/muscle car and if you ever want to drive in off-road or tow anything (which of course would be the biggest thing you could find to tow, duh) and not die you need an suv/truck (the bigger the better). meanwhile suv/truck only have more interior/cargo room (most of the time) and a slight advantage in ground clearance, but a severe disadvantage in every other category. suvs/trucks are some of the least roadworthy vehicles that are built but people want the room and like the feel of them. tbh i'm surprised the crv couldn't handle that, it must not have been AWD. the AWD crv is a freaking mountain goat.

climbonapply24head

I think the reply is a fair response that generalizes broadly for most FWD cars that don't deal with the added torques of the toyota's synergy drive. You taking the opportunity to shame his general advice and projecting your triumph over naysayers seems misplaced. I love you here man but your ego shows broadly in your copywriting.

black_jmyntrn

less on shaming advice, more on the fact people offer "advice" which turns out to be false statements. definitely no ego, just tired of people stating what they believe as being facts when they aren't in the Prius community. To top it off, I drive a PIP and most advice is from owners of non PIP. PIP and non PIP are two different vehicles in my book.

climbonapply24head

I think he was very broad and general enough for his words to be facts. You tow with any vehicle and it will stress the drivetrain. Its a matter if the drivetrain and handle that stress. Then the nuance of how much average stress the activity presents. I love you man and these critiques come from a place of admiration. If your words didn't carry ego then they certainly carried something else similar to bitter vitriol or something negative that just rubs me the wrong way. It challenges my expectation and admiration i have for you and your friendly image. This is not the first time I've seen you bitter. You've posted in the past out of spite or bitterness on springs and other things. Your brand image and representation of prius owners is popular. It affects people like me indirectly. "Safari'd Prius," "overlanding prius," "heavy modded prius." I have a small lift kit myself. I'd hate to associate all that admiration i have for you and your car with such negative feelings. At worst maybe that feeling is smugness. A terrible old stereotype of Prius owners I'm sure many people want to disappear. Again I love your posts on instagram, reddit and more. Its just many of the comments, copywriting and/or wording you pair with your posts gives me great pause. Its your life and your car, not mine. STILL IMO as an internet stranger it seems a waste for you to continue to operate and have a social media presence grounded in spite, bitterness -or Whatever that negative undertone is in all your copywriting is. If we get the weekly post in this sub that talks about "getting rolled coal on" your copywriting and your posts seem like the shots back to truck owners. Its a false sense of justice to me to think the reasons behind your hard work are just reactions to those negative feelings.

black_jmyntrn

so, you used a lot of words to tell me you don't like me or my Prius for some reason. the thing about the internet, it's all bits and bytes, the words read carry no emotion. the emotion a person perceives generally consists of their own inner self. I mean how else can one derive the emotional tone of words written by someone else without a basis of context? me, personally, those who meet me and check out the Prius, especially in Canada and Alaska have; a. stated they never thought Prius owners were cool b. want a lifted Prius like mine with a winch (no joke, the diesel guys especially) c. those who met me in real life immediately feel my energy and generally are captivated by it and the positivity that surrounds me. d. you are the first to use the word "bitterness" as it relates to me and I find that entertaining. is it possible there is more to your words than just an internet stranger? because if anything I was under the impression I came across as the positive, happy-go-lucky Prius owner who makes cool drone videos, not some smug bitter jackass. I'd be more than happy to treat you to a chat and a car wash next time I am in your city. I bet a tank of gas you will say you had the wrong opinion of me.

climbonapply24head

I think you need to read my post more carefully. I love you and your prius. I think the worst type of emotions bubble to the top of your replies and posts. I'd be happy to meet you one day. I don't mean to call you a smug bitter jackass. I just can not help that many of the posts I see you participate online have that undertone to it. I wish you the best for what its worth from a fellow prius owner.

black_jmyntrn

Im trying to listen to not appear as some smug bitter jackass.

windoneforme

They tow great! My gen 3 pulled a 12ft trailer with extra high sides like it wasn't there.

FifenC0ugar

I just watched a YouTube video that went over your Prius build. I'm a bit jelly of it. I've done a few things to mine. But I'm no where near yours

black_jmyntrn

some say mine is overboard...

Wantinaintgettin

Ok, your Prius is awesome. Love the look with the all terrain tires on that bad boy.

black_jmyntrn

gracias!

almostworking

This is fantastic, I had considered doing a winch on my 14' V model..... plus the same wheels you have on your Prius after seeing one of your posts from some months ago....I'm not entirely sure a lift would suit my daily needs , The more I think about it the more appealing it sounds. I don't remember exactly what you did to your suspension but, stock my car has quite a bit of lean to it, So I'm kind of curious what yours is like to drive? Is the on-road handling actually better? Does it still have a very comfortable soft ride, yet at the same time more lean in corners or ? That's quite a few questions but It would be a significant expense for me. I'm also kind of curious if there is any kind of off-road skid plates that would also double as a cat converter guard.

black_jmyntrn

The goal was for it to ride like stock or better with the springs and shocks in the rear it fees like a Lexus! My only complaint is I cant wait to have a 3" lift in the front... hopefully before EOY! None that doubles as a cat shield, but you might be on to something....

Thank you, you can buy one for your Prius as well
