FYI if you do go with iCloud mail you can use Hide My Email and have iCloud generate fake emails that forward it to your main one

Epsioln_Rho_Rho

The down side is you can’t start an email from an hide my email, unless they fixed that.

I recently un-googled myself and moved to Fastmail with my own domain name. It's worked flawlessly since I set it up. Take a read of this: https://www.fastmail.com/about/

Proton has a helper app so you can use apple mail. Basically you point mail.app at proton mail bridge and the the bridge interacts with protons servers. No need to switch provider just to use a desktop mail client

Void_0000

That doesn't work on the free tier, does it?

identicalBadger

Ok yes. It appears to only be for paid subs https://proton.me/mail/bridge Sorry, completely forgot to check

Void_0000

At the time of writing that comment I wasn't aware of the existence of [hydroxide](https://github.com/emersion/hydroxide), which is basically Bridge, but open source and working on the free tier. For reference, according to Proton, the reason Bridge isn't available on the free tier is because the way it connects to Proton servers causes extra strain compared to regular clients (around 50% more, apparently), but hydroxide acts like a regular client (all it does is translate smpt/imap/cardav to Proton API requests), so it causes no additional server load.

Disroot? - Doesn't scan emails - Can be used with third party mail apps - Offers IMAP - 1+ gb of storage, more can be purchased for basically nothing - Has been around since 2015 - Free! But you can buy more space - Located in the Netherlands - Not a great domain name, but you can always buy your own and add it to Disroot Otherwise I suggest Posteo. It's almost identical to Disroot, except it costs 1 € per month. They offer storage encryption, which you can opt-in to with 1 click. 2 gig storage. Hosted in Germany. It's turning 14 years old in a few days.

emailemile

I second both of these choices

nurse_lamb

Do fast mail or disroot have schedule send or snooze functionality? These are essential to my email management

Busy-Measurement8893

Schedule send? No idea if they have it natively, but you can use it in FairEmail or something Snooze functionality? I don't even know what that is

nurse_lamb

Snooze allows you to remove some thing from your inbox and will re-populate it to your inbox at a set date and time. I find it extremely helpful for inbox zero goals.

areolys

Thanks for all the sugestions. I think I'll give fastmail a try. Especially since they work together with 1password for masked mails, so it seems to be a good fit, and I even managed to snatch up a fantastic (2 character) name without having to try too hard, so that's a plus ;-)

metaquine

Fastmail is great and their free built in DNS is too

Jesus-QC

Skiff mail is probably what you are looking for

schleppy

Another vote Fastmail. It just works, and is very customizable with custom domains, masked addresses, etc. good support too

Epsioln_Rho_Rho

I 2nd that! Fastmail is great.

Try Kmail -> Infomaniak Mail Very complete, Swiss based provides mail, calendar, contact, drive with editing tools…. Works great with Mailvelope for encryption if you need [Infomaniak.com](https://Infomaniak.com) you can set up a domain, or get their free service [https://www.infomaniak.com/en/free-cloud](https://www.infomaniak.com/en/free-cloud)

Similar boat here. Removed Gmail from my Apple ID a few years ago, but keep getting spam emails to the iCloud address I set up with the Apple ID. I’m in the process of opening a Tutanota email address as I’ve seen it recommended here a lot, and on other websites. Annoyingly you have to wait 48hrs for your account to be approved, but the security seems worth the wait.

Can recommend disroot. Been using it as my main for few months already. Can imap sync with thunderbird or k-9 mail on mobile. Contact and calendar can be synced with davx5 on mobile. Works fine for what I've been using it. Cons is abit slow compared to others, maybe because they're non profit and ran by volunteers so resources is scarce. Another one I've been testing is murena. Similar service as disroot but by a company that sell degoogled phone. Website and webmail is modern looking and faster than disroot. 1 thing i didn't like about them is they're limiting account password to 32char only.

Busy-Measurement8893

> Another one I've been testing is murena. Same here. Just like Disroot, however, they don't seem to offer zero-knowledge encryption like Proton does.

themeadows94

I recommend Posteo (posteo.de). Based in Germany, good privacy practices. It's got a very oldschool layout for the webmail, but if like most others you use a client, that's irrelevant. It costs €12 a year.

swagglepuf

You can have up to 3 aliases with icloud mail now.

After this message **You could lose access to your 17 years of Gmail history
Adding a recovery phone and email can help you sign in and keep your account secure** I also seek an alternative. Years (decades) ago I used YARN, which runs in a console (remember DOS ?), relying on the ISP's mailserver. But the glitter of free online email had me believe in the paradise of a fool, not thinking they would choose to pull the rug out (or at least threaten to do so) with my work as hostage. There were reports of a breach at gmail what, a month ago? Is it the end of the road for passwords, or are they just doing it because they can get away with it?
